[–]silent66 8 points9 points ago

It's only a hate crime if they bully him BECAUSE he is black. If they just don't like him because he gave one of them a virus then it's just hate on a computer that is black!

[–]silent_p 6 points7 points ago

They'd better convince another black computer to gang up on him too. Just to be careful.

[–]Knightbre 2 points3 points ago

They're going to sue the fuck out of that PC.

[–]derpwadmcstuffykins 0 points1 point ago

The real tragedy here is that OP thinks that macs can bully a PC. Its like a gang of lepers making fun of a man with a six figure salary.

I don't think the actual product bothers us, but the price does. The fact that a laptop that's half the price can be more powerful is a little embarrassing. But I must admit, the battery life and style of those laptops is amazing.

[–]wtfamireadingdotjpg 5 points6 points ago

Despite being a massive Apple hater, I won't hivemind here. So i'll upvote you to 0.

Your point is half true. Hardware-wise yes Apples are horrifically overpriced for what they really are (the same components you'd find in an HP, Dell, Acer, etc), and underpowered as well for their price points. As a product itself, there's nothing wrong with it besides price and how easy it is to chip the anodized aluminum on an iPhone5. They're actually quite beautiful for some.

However the rest of the hatred is geared at the company and their actions/beliefs. The copyright bullying, lying to consumers (how long did they say Macs couldn't get viruses?), the "cult-like" behaviors of some of their fans and how annoying they can be (not ALL of them, but there are quite a few, working across the hallway from an Apple store for a year and half does that), how restricted the operating systems can be, Steve Job's treatment of employees and those under him all whilst being nearly worshiped as a god, flat out copying other's ideas and claiming them as their own (going after Microsoft decades ago for using a GUI in windows claiming Microsoft stole it, and Xerox had to step in showing they were first), etc.

And this doesn't go for all Apple users, but some do exhibit this behavior and thus spawns the generalizations for the hatred, especially on reddit when new about Apple copyright bullying some company into submission hits the front page.

[–]2brun4u 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for saying this, don't forget the practice of making special displays in stores so Apple won't be fairly compared side to side with other devices, and just doing nonsensical stuff like changing to "lightning" port when they could have used microUSB and made the world a better place

[–]rthanu 0 points1 point ago

I used to think all that was why I hated Apple, but I think it boils down to the fact that the image that they market repulses me.

I find it shallow and pretentious and it makes me weep for our culture that it is so enormously successful.

[–]mattindustries -5 points-4 points ago

The fact that a laptop that's half the price can be more powerful is a little embarrassing.

That is a tired (and usually wrong) statement. Find me a 13" laptop for under $600 that has the following.

  • 128+ SSD
  • 4GB RAM
  • At least 1440x900 resolution
  • i5/i7 processor
  • Is under 3lbs
  • 7 hour battery life
  • USB 3

[–]bo87 1 point2 points ago

the weight and battery life can be hard to match. The rest, which matters in most situations, can easily be matched. Does the original macbook have SSD?

[–]mattindustries 1 point2 points ago

I am going off the macbook air. The pros have upped processor, video, and offer ridiculously great displays but without SSD standard. Battery life and weight are very important to a lot of people, myself included. I am a programmer who likes to take a bicycle and bike through a couple states at a time (phone is a hotspot). I like how since people couldn't find a $600 to match, that they decided to just downvote me instead.

Yes, you might be able to save a hundred or two, but having physical stores to bring your machine in and have everything taken care of for you the same day is really nice. This is especially true when you work from your laptop (like I do when traveling). Saying that you can get a laptop for half the cost that performs better is just being obtuse.

[–]SirZugzwang 0 points1 point ago

The only thing that makes it hard to match is the SSD; Apple pretty much has the only laptops that have them at all.

And complaining about the weight difference just seems ridiculous; 2.5 lbs is fine, but everything under 10 lbs cannot be claimed as heavy. I have never picked up a laptop, ever, and thought 'this is heavy'.

I have a new Toshiba, with a i5, 6 GB of RAM, 1366x768 resolution, weighs around 5 pounds, has a 4-5 hour battery life, and 2 USB 3.0 ports. Cost under $500 (it was a Christmas present). If you really want the SSD, you could buy a 120 GB Intel for $100, and have the computer you described for half the price.

I actually also built a desktop on top of this laptop that cost around $800 and had a 64 GB SSD, an i3 (honestly the i5 and i7 would've just been a waste of money when comparing performance), a damn nice GPU (Radeon HD 7850 series), a 2 TB internal HDD, 16 GB of RAM, 3 USB 3.0 ports plus another 5 2.0's in case I have a lot to plug in.

So for barely above the cost of the 13" Air, you could build a desktop that well outclasses the Air, and a laptop that's almost equivalent to it right off the shelves.

[–]mattindustries -1 points0 points ago

The only thing that makes it hard to match is the SSD; Apple pretty much has the only laptops that have them at all.

Not true. You just have to pay more (rending the false claim of apple being twice as much invalid).

nd complaining about the weight difference just seems ridiculous; 2.5 lbs is fine, but everything under 10 lbs cannot be claimed as heavy. I have never picked up a laptop, ever, and thought 'this is heavy'.

8lb laptops are heavy. Also those heavier laptops take up a lot more space. Take one around for a week everywhere, and do the same for another laptop... you WILL notice the difference.

Please link it then. Also, not all SSDs are created equally, but I will say for ~$120 you can get a good one. Sure, your resolution also seems lower, which is kind of important since sometimes the clients also want a design changes done. Oh yeah, your battery life also is only about 60% of what I listed and the thing weighs more... a lot more.

So for barely above the cost of the 13" Air, you could build a desktop that well outclasses the Air, and a laptop that's almost equivalent to it right off the shelves.

Holy fucking irrelevant fact batman. Comparing desktop prices to laptops...hahahahaha.

[–]SirZugzwang 0 points1 point ago

Is $700 really worth carrying 6 less pounds, having a resolution BARELY below the Apple, and an SSD? 8 pounds is only heavy if you have a serious lack of any muscle.

The simple fact remains that you are massively overpaying for the components in an Apple laptop. It may not be literally twice what a non-Apple laptop would be, but the prices are still excessively high for the hardware components.

Obviously desktops aren't directly relevant, but still. I have a laptop that is less than half the price and only slightly less performance, and a desktop with obviously much better performance, for about the price of the 13' Macbook Air. Are those equivalent amounts of technology? Fuck no, but the price is about the same. You get a lot more bang for your buck if you don't choose Mac.

Another fun example: the new iMacs. Fusion Drive, which adds a 128 GB SSD to the existing 1 TB HDD, for the low low cost of $250. For $250 dollars, you can buy an SSD literally twice that size. There's a separate example of Apple hiking up prices by doubling the cost of the components for the consumer.

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point ago

having a resolution BARELY below the Apple, and an SSD?

Having an extra 132px of vertical space is a lot, and an SSD is WAAAAAAAAY faster than even a 10k rpm drive and is less likely to die from being moved around a lot.

8 pounds is only heavy if you have a serious lack of any muscle.

Try biking even just 60 miles in one day with the 8lb laptop, 2lb charger, and some tools.

The simple fact remains that you are massively overpaying for the components in an Apple laptop.

Yeah, that is why you found a comparable laptop... wait... no... that never happened.

It may not be literally twice what a non-Apple laptop would be, but the prices are still excessively high for the hardware components.

So you agree with my first statement, that the guy was simply wrong.

Every company (Dell, Toshiba, etc) will charge ridiculous prices for upgrades compared to buying it separately. Again, not even a point. At least it wasn't as bad as your "LOLBut I cAn TotallY BuY a DEsKtOP for LEsS than a lApTOP".

It's not under $600, but I think it looks better, and I don't have to deal with osx, it is cheaper than the 13 inch MBA, from this year, the screen will be full 1080p HD, and it has Carbon Fibre, and Carbon Fibre is awesome

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point ago

The laptop you linked to is only 1280x720... not 1080P at all. Also, OSX is pretty awesome as it is based on unix and I use the terminal daily. The laptop you linked to also only matches the or is worse for processor, ram, SSD space.... AND IT $999. So basically you agree that you can't get a laptop for half the cost that is a better performer. Actually, you can only get one for ~15% less that is actually worse (especially in regard to display) than the air.

[–]2brun4u 0 points1 point ago

Like I said- FROM this year, this is still last years model on the website, the 1080p one will come out soon. http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/06/dells-xps-13-getting-a-1080p-screen/

The Asus Zenbook starts at the same price as the XPS, it has 1080p, and you can even upgrade it to have an Nvidia graphics card, and a multitouch display

If you are looking at price, the Ultrabooks/MBA are of equal performance and price (on a 13 inch screen, the resolution doesn't make a huge difference if you have your face at an appropriate distance) but honestly, My favorite Ultrabook is the Lenovo Carbon X1, you can even get the screen in full touch as an option

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point ago

1080p one will come out soon.

Oh, so you can't actually buy it then. Awesome.

The Asus Zenbook starts at the same price as the XPS, it has 1080p, and you can even upgrade it to have an Nvidia graphics card, and a multitouch display

The zenbook isn't less than $600 last time I looked, was missing USB 3, had a crappy keyboard, and a lousy display.

If you are looking at price, the Ultrabooks/MBA are of equal performance and price (on a 13 inch screen, the resolution doesn't make a huge difference if you have your face at an appropriate distance)

Well, that is a lie. So here we are... still no laptops for half the price that are more powerful. I guess that statement was wrong, just like I said.

[–]2brun4u 0 points1 point ago

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/21/asus-zenbook-ux31-review/

The Zenbook even has a better battery benchmark. The Zenbook has 1600x900 (Sorry, not 1080p, but it is higher than 1440x900) you may think they are lousy, but that's your opinion. I think that the the colours in Mac screens are over-saturated, and I don't like that, It also has USB 3, look at the first picture on the website

As a lie? not really. Yes Retina display is beautiful (MBA doesn't have it) but Apple understands the closeness of a screen to your face makes a difference, an iPhone is 326ppi, an iPad is 264ppi, and the MBA is 220ppi. what I'm saying is that the approximately 2 feet I am from my Laptop screen means I can't see the individual pixels, and mine is 720p (mine is also 13 inches, incidentally 125ppi) , yes Higher is good, but at these screen sizes, it only makes a slight difference

So here we are... still no laptops for half the price that are more powerful. I guess that statement was wrong, just like I said.

Okay, Challenge accepted, $650, 1TB Hard drive, 8GB RAM, and an intel i5 http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-15r-5521/pd.aspx?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs It is what you wanted, right? half the price, and more powerful

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point ago

what I'm saying is that the approximately 2 feet I am from my Laptop screen means I can't see the individual pixels, and mine is 720p

You can notice a difference in resolution without making out the individual pixels. When I go from my air to a retina display I can notice the difference really easily, and the air is 13" and 1440x900.

Okay, Challenge accepted, $650

  • Not SSD
  • TWICE THE WEIGHT
  • Abysmal battery life
  • Worse resolution

It is what you wanted, right? half the price, and more powerful

$1,200/2 = $600... not $650. Close enough though. As far as performance, the processor is an i5, but lower boost (2.6 vs 2.8) and the 5400rpm drive (SLOOOOOOOW) kills the performance. Throw ~$200 at it and you have a decent SSD though. So... ~$850 with terrible battery life, display, and weight... but it has more ram, so that is nice.

[–]2brun4u 0 points1 point ago

The point is, the first person stated that you can get a PC that is twice as powerful for half the price, that was a comparative statement (It does have twice the RAM, the slightly lower speed of the processor is offset by the much higher RAM. in practice, the computer will be faster. Of course you can't beat the speed of a SSD, but for a regular home user, this speed is more than enough

still no laptops for half the price that are more powerful

That is what you asked for and I that is what I gave you.

When I go from my air to a retina display I can notice the difference really easily, and the air is 13" and 1440x900

Of course you can tell the difference, again, for the average user, this doesn't matter. The Asus Zenbook is still 1600 x 900 for a 13" display. that is a higher resolution than 1440 x 900. It also seems that the viewing angles are better than the MBA (Yes, If my Laptop had a 1080p display it would be perfect, but it's not a huge difference, if you're curious, it is a ThinkPad x230t, so instead of 1080p, I have full multitouch, and a built in Wacom digitizer with pen- altogether more useful than a 1080p display, although that would be nice)

  • The Asus has a longer battery life (See the testing on Engadget link)
  • It is $200 cheaper (If you wait for a sale, getting it for $900 is possible making it $300 cheaper than the equivalent MBA which is $1200.
  • It is 0.6 pounds lighter than the MBA
  • it comes with VGA and Ethernet adapters and the packaging doubles as a case, for a MBA, you will have to pay extra for all these things (the adapters are $34 each, and lets say $15 for the case, that's roughly $70 in extras you get already)
  • it also has mini HDMI and mini VGA, both widely used formats for sharing media. Thunderbolt is still rare
  • This review is from 2011, the Keyboard was back-lit and the track pad much improved as of last year (friend has it, the track-pad is very good now)
  • Speakers are engineered by Bang and Olufsen- still sounds like Laptop speakers, but warmer than most, but it gets pretty loud, and sounds good (Don't know how it sounds vs an MBA)
  • Performance wise they are almost equal, here is a quote from Engadget: "If benchmarks are any indication, the UX31 matches -- and sometimes bests -- the Air's performance. In PCMark Vantage, for instance, it managed an impressive score of 10,218, compared with 9,484 for the Air. In 3DMark06 it notched 4,171, while the Air landed a similar score of 4,223."

Literally "Exactly double the power for exactly half the price", is a metaphor that you can get a machine much more suited for your uses for less than what Apple has. In fact an i3 may be too powerful for many users, realistically, you don't even need an i7 unless you edit video, game a lot, or use CAD. The fact is, If I were to buy an Ultrabook, I would choose the Asus, It's just better, and cheaper, and I can run Windows or Linux on it (I can't stand OSX, the easiness to use becomes frustrating when you have to do something slightly technical, and you can't)

EDIT: The Dell XPS 12 (not 13) has full multitouch, and a 1080p screen for the same price as an MBA, you can even get 8GB RAM, only draw back, it is 12 inches.... not a huge difference, but for this argument...

[–]Thotaz -1 points0 points ago

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro The cheapest mac with those specs is 1399$ so the price should be 700$ or less.

[–]Dragoryu3000 18 points19 points ago

I have a Mac, and I go to an engineering college. Here, it's the other way around...

[–]Pythosblaze 18 points19 points ago

And here at art school, everyone has either a Mac or an Alienware. I've seen maybe two different laptops.

[–]Abezilla116 6 points7 points ago

I'm a game art student, I use computers for modeling, animating, and drawing/painting and I don't really like macs because of their (in my opinion) wonky OS. I have nothing against them but I prefer PC probably because I grew up with them and I'm also quite a bit of a gamer. I did use a mac for about 4 years but I just never got attached to it. I know there are reasons why people in our majors would prefer them but I honestly don;t really know much about that.

[–]Pythosblaze 7 points8 points ago

Just saying what I see.

I personally prefer Mac, but that's likely because I'm used to it. I don't see either OS X or Windows as superior, really. More a matter of choice.

[–]Abezilla116 3 points4 points ago

That pretty much. Its preference, but they do different things better such as gaming on PC.

[–]AtTheLeftThere 9 points10 points ago

I went to school for EE, and nobody used macs except a few of the software guys. Everyone used a PC because of the software we use- MATLAB, AutoCAD, MultiSim, various other simulators and graphing software, etc.

I honestly do not know anyone personally who used a Mac in engineering. The only people that used them on campus in my other classes were girls who wore North Face jackets, Uggs, yoga pants, and generally had sorority purses. You know, the type who buys any product Apple shits out just because they care about image.

[–]Dragoryu3000 3 points4 points ago

Perhaps I should specify, because I realize my choice of words was misleading. I go to a university that concerns itself primarily with its engineering program. I myself am not a STEM major. I can assure you that I'm not a girl, and I don't wear North Face jackets, Uggs, or yoga pants. I didn't buy the Mac for its image. It was a gift, in fact, and I quite appreciate it.

[–]bluebooby 2 points3 points ago

Hm. I see plenty of engineers with Macs at my university. Definitely not as prominent as humanity courses, but still plenty.

[–]factory81 0 points1 point ago

I just love seeing people using a Mac and booting in to Windows fucking 7.

I see it at least once a week in my life. It is like what the fuck are you even doing? It just shows you that people would still rather use Apple hardware........and run a Microsoft OS.

[–]sictransitgary 6 points7 points ago

I would assume that most of these people run and prefer OS X and dual boot out of necessity. Virtualization isnt something most basic users understand, but dual booting is fairly idiot proof. It doesnt seem terribly idiotic to me though.

[–]sneakersokeefe 1 point2 points ago

They may be required to use specific windows software for certain classes.

[–]Arkanta 1 point2 points ago

I use windows for windows-only software, but I love my Mac's hardware. The aluminium, etc ... I don't see why I should be stuck in a Mac OS X only universe.

[–]2brun4u 0 points1 point ago

[–]fizzy_lifting_drank 1 point2 points ago

cubase

[–]elebrin 1 point2 points ago

You are correct. ProTools also has a Windows version but I have never worked with that one. It is a bit on the spendy side.

[–]fizzy_lifting_drank 1 point2 points ago

Protools is a pain in the ass no matter the os. I tend to think its more stable on osx but its not saying that much.

[–]elebrin 1 point2 points ago

Yeah the studio I work for uses Cubase these days, and he only recently switched from his old system. It is amazing how small the equipment is these days... the 16 track board and the laptop he bought to run the software all fit on a single cart, which replaces an entire bench of crap.

[–]djKaktus 8 points9 points ago

Are you kidding? Saying that PCs can't do sound and video editing is like saying a Lambo can't go fast because it isn't a race car.

[–]gsfgf 4 points5 points ago

Just like any other computer, that's largely dependent on the graphics card. My 5 year old Mac Pro with a decent graphics card plays any game I throw at it. Obviously, a laptop with integrated graphics won't do so hot.

[–]joshemory 5 points6 points ago

My macbook pro is a dual boot OSX/windows 7. I have no problem playing anything on the windows partition.

[–]sayrith 1 point2 points ago

funny because the Mac Pros are designed to do exactly that.

[–]Nick_Lastname 1 point2 points ago

Tell me that after you have a 14 hour render time on a 7 minute 720p h.264 video

[–]Frenchy-LaFleur 32 points33 points ago

*at half the price

[–]_AktionT4_ -1 points0 points ago

[–]seanbanks 4 points5 points ago

Pretty sure that's a cyber hate crime.

[–]Ranikins -1 points0 points ago

The shot is like a super hero movie. The bad macs guys surround the PC and then the PC takes them all down with the assistance of bullet time and rock music.

[–]ohchristworld 0 points1 point ago

It's like the Klan. Poor little black computer.

[–]myriadic -3 points-2 points ago

Plot twist: windows computer has Linux dual boot...MACs all get their asses kicked.

[–]phormality 16 points17 points ago

OS X is a UNIX at its core. It can also triple boot OS X, Linux, and Windows.

[–]gsfgf 11 points12 points ago

Not only that, you have a full GNU environment under the hood, and it can run MS Office. All at once.

[–]dxrebirth 16 points17 points ago

Ignorance is bliss. Mac is a unix based system that can easily dual boot Linux as well as Windows. Can Windows run OS X?

[–]Pythosblaze -1 points0 points ago

Yep. I partitioned my dad's MacBook Pro so I could play video games on it. It's not perfect, but it's great for the most part. Some things (Terraria, I'm looking at you) still don't work.

[–]Havershim 4 points5 points ago

Dual with Ubuntu!

[–]myriadic 2 points3 points ago

Would dueling with dual boot be unfair?! (haha...ha....ha......)

[–]4Sci 2 points3 points ago

You just cranked the nerd-dial up to 11. I wholeheartedly approve.

[–]sneakersokeefe 26 points27 points ago

[–]welfaretrain -1 points0 points ago

The Apples are just upset that the windows laptop is twice as powerful at 3/4 of the price.

I smell jealousy.

[–]coffeeINJECTION -5 points-4 points ago

Fuck those mean Macs

[–]basec0m -1 points0 points ago

That table has a huge markup...

[–]leftystrat -1 points0 points ago

This is me at work. Linux in a sea of Win and superior Mac fanboys.

[–]4Sci 2 points3 points ago

I wish more people understood the awesomeness of Linux.

[–]LenovoDoneFuckedUp 1 point2 points ago

I really really really really wish I could use linux on a thinkpad, but thanks to nvidia's stupidity, I can't. Had a beast Thinkpad W520, had to sell it and buy a retina Macbook to get a stable/portable unix based system.

I HATE YOU NVIDIA.

[–]kinetophone 0 points1 point ago

Just fixed (another client's) XP laptop with it- sadly, with a 1/2 g of RAM, I may as well just leave XP on it. It had a reboot loop- F8 to select STOP RESTARTING (WHY is this default for boot FAIL?). Now able to see error/ faulty file. Linux thumb booted it and replaced the file with a copy off my PC. (I was booted to Ubuntu anyway- just mounted my XP boot drive and copied it off). Fixed. Run chkdsk and update. DONE. So easy. Thumb drives are handy.

[–]leftystrat -1 points0 points ago

I gave my wife a linux laptop 2 years ago. She hasn't asked me a single question in that time - she just uses it. XP before that. So much for linux being difficult to use.

[–]4Sci 2 points3 points ago

I did something similar for my Aunt. She uses Hotmail, Youtube, and Skype. We give her our previous desktop whenever we purchase a new computer. Windows XP was chugging on the old hardware, especially running any modern browser.

I swapped Linux Mint, setup her icons and folders identically, and she's been perfectly fine with the transition! The computer is significantly faster too.
