A day with Hunter S. Thompson (i.imgur.com)

alright im sorry to be that guy, but this is simply not true. this comes from E. Jean Carroll who imo wrote the worst of HST biographies of all time. while hunter totally refused to speak with her she just spoke to associates, friends and acquaintances. and while she was not getting the stuff she was looking for she nvented a hunter who never existed. someone bigger then life who could deliver the stories she was looking for. but nothing of that stuff is true.
i was a long time reader of anita thompson owl farm blog. this entry reminded me, after a long time, to check it out again. sadly i couldnt find it. (im tired and lazy and did a half assed google search only). but that blog was truly great for every fan of hunter.
she would speak very hornestly about him and released small bits of his text, or would hint out great articles or passages of his books. some of the text bits were even unreleased i think.
she also answered a lot of the most frequented questions and one of them ofc was: how high was he during his writing?
and as far as i can recall she said he never wrote high. he sometimes tried. ( and there are hilarious pieces of text about him, writing on mescaline, where he was suprised how well he could spell stuff. all that was on the blog) sometimes he would write high, especially in the early years, but he had to put to much work in it, the day after, because most of the time it was pure horseshit. anita thompson said, he worte his best stuff in the last years of his life and everything was written completly sober.
while he still was a notorious drugfiend and an addict in the time between the deadlines. but also that he had that image pressed onto him if he wanted it or not. he also had sometimes the feeling he had to life up to that image. he was a strange man for sure, but i believe he was so so much more than just the raging addict.
and in all seriousness, its also nothing funny. i joked and glorified his behavior too in my younger years. later i made my own experiences. and years later you will look back and understand that, while its fun at the time, you lose something you will never get back. losing this naivety and gaining this new carving never known before is something most dont speak about. sure you can control and suppress it. but it will never go away again.
tl;dr: dont read that shitty book by that crappy writer or believe anything that comes from her quotes, its all made up. try to get hold of stuff anita thompson wrote about hunter if you really want to get to know him. if you glorify drugs and really want to try them out, prepare yourself for a ride, which will not be what you might expect. prepare yourself for the fact that you will lose more then you will gain.
/edit: thanks a lot for reddit gold, stranger. i always wanted to know what that is about. cheers!
[–]LennyPalmer 191 points192 points193 points 15 days ago*
Yeah, I came here to say this is probably total bullshit. I can imagine he did this one day, in particular, but to pretend this is his regular schedule is just buying into the dumb-ass myth of the legions of "fans" who only ever read Fear and Loathing, or worse, just watched the movie.
Honestly, his drug use is about the least interesting thing about him. He was an excellent journalist. His early sixties foreign correspondence from South America is some of the best shit he ever wrote, and for the most part has absolutely nothing to do with drugs, or was written sober.
Honestly, this kind of Thompson fandom pisses me off. It denigrates the work of a great writer to "he's that guy who did a bunch of drugs and wrote that Las Vegas book about drugs."
Edit: Fucking read 'On the Campaign Trail '72' and 'The Great Shark Hunt', and 'Kingdom of Fear'. He's a genuinely insightful man if you're a fan of literature, rather than rock star personalities. Or if you just want drug-craziness, The Curse of Lono is still pretty good, but you're missing the god damned point.
[–]Eschatos 50 points51 points52 points 15 days ago
Hells Angels is a hell of a read as well.
[–]fishandring 6 points7 points8 points 15 days ago
For some reason, I could never get into that one. I much prefer his editorial compilations, they have so much wit and insight. He could see straight through bullshit.
[–]UrzaJR 2 points3 points4 points 15 days ago
Amen man, one of my favorite books of all time, and IMHO is one of the best works of modern narrative journalism ever produced. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is also a seminal piece of work. Just read his account of the Democratic convention and just try to find similar coverage from the period that matches it.
[–]Pinetarball 16 points17 points18 points 15 days ago
Imagine if Phillip K. Dick and Thompson hung out in the 70's.
[–]MoonDaddy 5 points6 points7 points 15 days ago
Very well put. All of this stuff bugs me too, and takes away from his extremely insightful political commentary.
[–]FirstVape 3 points4 points5 points 15 days ago
Is the curse of lono anywhere near as good as fear and loathing in Vegas? I'd never heard of that one before.
[–]kronicfeld 17 points18 points19 points 15 days ago
I think if you really want to learn about HST, you need to read the collections of his correspondence. That tells you a hundred times more than fictional accounts of his debauchery and hedonism.
[–]BeerNTacos 11 points12 points13 points 15 days ago
I can attest that this is definitely Carroll's writings and she used this in her book, " Hunter The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson."
I think she writes for Elle magazine nowadays.
[–]relaks 142 points143 points144 points 15 days ago*
I was kind of expecting this post to be at the top-
But the fact is I like the Hunter S Thompson invincible drug crusher myth more.
edit It's at the top now. Whoa.

The only reason I thought it wasn't factual was that there was no mention of random gunfire.

There's a certain acronym popularized last year regarding the number of times a person typically lives. Are you familiar with it?
I think it's agreed we all hate it. Yet sometimes it really, really applies...
[–]docjesus 26 points27 points28 points 15 days ago
Thanks for taking the time to write this. I read the list and was more than a little incredulous. I know there's such a thing as tolerance, but come on. If it's even possible to consume that many drugs on a daily basis, there's no way you could sustain a career as a journalist while doing so.
And yeah, the glorification of how many drugs he supposedly took weirds me out too. I can only assume it's by people who've never had a friend who went too far down that road.
[–]OIP 36 points37 points38 points 15 days ago

It is true. Rolling Stone's oral history (GONZO: The Life of Hunter S Thompson) basically included everyone that ever knew him in his life as an intimate suggesting that his drug and booze intake was inconceivable and he did it day in and day out. Hunter's own doctor is quoted that he had no liver damage. After a lifetime of booze so heavy he nearly died having surgery from detoxing. He called him a physiological freak that had some super-human tolerance for nearly everything.
He was a hardcore alcoholic and coke head that couldn't travel without shipping massive quantities of coke across the country to feed his habit, and had to be detoxed from booze after his surgeries in the hospital.
Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone's editors had to try to "manage" his addictions to get any work out of him, keep him "balanced" just perfectly to write. A lot of Hunter's writing was heavily reliant on editors because he couldn't concentrate with that much shit in his system to do it himself.
This is obviously a bit exaggerated because Hunter would "show off" to reporters like this to create the legend, but he definitely didn't write sober all the time, if ever, and this gels with the basic routine that about 10 intimate friends described.
Anita Thompson knew him for a few years at the end when he was an old man. This was Thompson in his prime.
[–]voyaging 17 points18 points19 points 15 days ago
I'll assume you're using "prime" liberally.
Also, of course he was an alcoholic and coke addict. Nobody's saying he wasn't. But I'd be willing to bet a very large sum of money he didn't take LSD every night at 10 P.M. or eat a dinner as large as that article claims after snorting massive amounts of cocaine all day.
[–]BakedGood 5 points6 points7 points 15 days ago
His own son attested that his father did eat like this and even he could scarcely believe it. He binged on everything he ever did. He only ate about one meal every 24 hours, but it was a massive meal.
[–]courage_wolf 1 point2 points3 points 15 days ago
I can see him writing mostly on speed, but not mescaline or LSD. He probably had periods where he went nuts, especially when he was in his 20s and 30s but he pretty much consistently produced lucid stuff, which is borderline impossible for someone who does coke for weeks on end. Speed yes, coke no. And I'm sure he played up the myth to a certain extent as well. The truth as always is probably in the middle somewhere.

How the hell could he be up for almost two whole hours before having a cup of coffee? Now that's a freak.
[–]DevilsCandyCane 179 points180 points181 points 15 days ago
Personally I'm surprised he bothers with coffee when he possesses ample cocaine...
[–]cornbread_tp 171 points172 points173 points 15 days ago
He had transcended the condition of drinking coffee for the caffeine kick. He was in it for the taste.
[–]RollerRagerMD[] 101 points102 points103 points 15 days ago
Is drinking for the taste really that rare? A good cafe con leche always satisfies my taste buds. Especially when I'm blazed.
[–]cornbread_tp 216 points217 points218 points 15 days ago
Hell if I know. I was just writin shit
[–]RollerRagerMD[] 45 points46 points47 points 15 days ago
just writin shit
Just as Mr. Thompson would have!
[–]Vorokar 18 points19 points20 points 15 days ago
Apparently. People look at me funny when I say anything to the effect of "I really don't care about the caffeine. I drink it because it tastes goddamn amazing."
[–]LongLiveThe_King 9 points10 points11 points 15 days ago
People are always calling me a liar because I say that coffee and energy drinks or pop don't really affect me, I don't know if its because I have a high tolerance or because my body is wired a bit different or maybe my extremely high metabolism (probably this one) yet I drink coffee every morning and I enjoy it for the taste and warmth because it is cold here.
One thing that does wake me though is water, every morning I wake up and drink a bit of water and it gives that little kick to get me going.
[–]Vorokar 5 points6 points7 points 15 days ago
Same. Most of my family get twitchy and bounce off the goddamn walls after consuming anything with caffeine in it. It doesn't wake me up, doesn't really keep me awake, and I get physically twitchy only after drinking ridiculous amounts of the stuff.
Coffee tastes great. It's hot, rich and not like anything else I've ever had or heard of.
[–]DevilsCandyCane 13 points14 points15 points 15 days ago
Dear god! He was hardcore!
I like coffee, but I consider it something I 'take' rather than something I 'drink'. Rocket Fuel all the way!
[–]BelugaTaquito 40 points41 points42 points 15 days ago
I've passed the point of consuming it for the kick. I consume it because it is, and will probably continue to be, the only constant thing in my life. I want a mug of coffee etched into my tombstone instead of a cross.
[–]DevilsCandyCane 3 points4 points5 points 15 days ago
I had a weird reaction to quitting harder stimulants a few years back - became ridiculously hypersensitive to all stims, including caffeine. 1/2 a teaspoon has me twitching, if Starbucks fuck up my order and give me fullstrength I'm sweating and shaking and overwhelmed by the simultaneous desires to SHOUT NONSENSE, and to vomit profusely. At low doses though, it's very effective, so overall a win!
[–]CantHearYou 16 points17 points18 points 15 days ago
Give it time, that will change.
[–]codechris 0 points1 point2 points 15 days ago
I do love coffee, but then to be fair, that's probably down to slight caffine addiction and it being in my routine
[–]Eversooner 11 points12 points13 points 15 days ago
He doesn't like cocaine. He just likes the way it smells.
[–]woopthat 6 points7 points8 points 15 days ago
The energy from coffee feels a lot different from cocaine.
[–]betterthanthou 3 points4 points5 points 15 days ago

This reminds me of a text file I've had sitting on my desktop for the longest time, titled "Breakfast with Hunter S. Thompson"...
Breakfast is the only meal of the day that I tend to view with the same kind of traditionalized reverence that most people associate with Lunch and Dinner. I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty-four hours, and mine is breakfast. In Hong Kong, Dallas or at home — and regardless of whether or not I have been to bed — breakfast is a personal ritual that can only be properly observed alone, and in a spirit of genuine excess. The food factor should always be massive: four Bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of coffee, Rangoon crepes, a half-pound of either sausage, bacon, or corned beef hash with diced chiles, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and something like a slice of Key lime pie, two margaritas, and six lines of the best cocaine for dessert... Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty-four hours and at least one source of good music… All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of a hot sun, and preferably stone naked.
[–]Bcron 12 points13 points14 points 15 days ago
12pm - Rise
12:02- First cup of coffee, room temperature
12:03- Back in bed
12:15- Rise; 2nd attempt
12:20- 2nd cup of coffee, room temperature

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 11 points12 points13 points 15 days ago
So glad it was you to make this post.
[–]DevilsCandyCane 55 points56 points57 points 15 days ago
Tell me about it - I just finished watching Scarface, now I'm reading this, and I'm tired as shit. If I had some coke, I could spend the rest of the night writing rambling manic genius, instead of going to bed like a boring sober bastard!
[–]Overt_Narcissist 50 points51 points52 points 15 days ago
Coke's only impressive when you have a lot of it. And the shit ain't cheap.
[–]DevilsCandyCane 89 points90 points91 points 15 days ago
But one always feels that one is impressive, whilst on coke. Every single fucking word of my whiskey and cocaine fueled verbal diarrhea is the most fucking impressive thing you'll ever fucking hear! You'd better appreciate my goddamn company, think I haven't got better places to be? God I hate you all! You're all beneath me! sniff
[–]Ermagerdalerker 32 points33 points34 points 15 days ago
This person has used cocaine. My friend calls that verbal diarrhea "cowboy poetry".
[–]outyourblowhole 12 points13 points14 points 15 days ago
I don't know man, I tried it a few times (you can't just do it once!) and I only felt two things: 1) A bitter taste in the back of my mouth 2) A desire to have a pantry full of the stuff
[–]DevilsCandyCane 9 points10 points11 points 15 days ago
Apt username! I wasn't a fan initially, after E it seemed a bit unmagical, but once I discovered whiskey, cocaine, and poker games with Johnny Cash playing in the background, ridiculous coked up banter, I was totally sold. I also enjoyed doing a line before going out (anywhere really, it's never a bad time) and driving into town singing along raucously to Hound Dog. And being a bastard online, that never gets old!
Sadly I made the grave error of moving up to intravenous coke, and that, overall, is a ghastly heartattack of an experience, yet incredibly moreish. Ruined coke for me, no longer do it. Annoying!
[–]space_monster 28 points29 points30 points 15 days ago
try living in Australia. $250 - $300 / gram.
yeah... sucks.
[–]saggy_balls 10 points11 points12 points 15 days ago
Holy shit. And I always bitched about paying $60.
[–]deesmutts88 15 points16 points17 points 15 days ago
I'd like to thank my lucky stars right now that I live in Australia. If coke was $60 a gram a couple of years ago when I went though that stage, I probably would not be alive right now.
[–]Martizzle1 9 points10 points11 points 15 days ago
10 bucks a gram down here in Costa Rica. Too bad I don't enjoy coke and stopped using it. Or maybe that's a good thing...
[–]Inquisitor1 16 points17 points18 points 15 days ago
Holy shit, for that money it better have some gold flakes in it. And the australian dollar is bigger than the american. And australians complain about expensive videogames...
[–]guyNcognito 24 points25 points26 points 15 days ago
It had god damned well better not have any gold flakes in it. At that price, the coke is far more expensive than gold. They could cut that shit with gold to make it cheaper.
[–]iNoScopedRFK 148 points149 points150 points 15 days ago
Holy hell...how can someone eat that much while coked out? That's got to be harder than the cinnamon challenge.
[–]MShasta 85 points86 points87 points 15 days ago

[–]pillowpal 99 points100 points101 points 15 days ago
Benzo's.

It's not hard to sleep after a pile of coke if you're drunk. Of course it's probably gonna be at 8 am, but that's usually a planned situation.

[–]__PIERCE__ 54 points55 points56 points 15 days ago
Hunter wrote that about his lawyer, Oscar Acosta.

I thought so (only actually seen the movie fear and loathing) but the more I've read about Thompson the more I thought it applied to him too.

True! Although, I write some very questionable stuff after 4am. ;-)
[–]wrongrrabbit 31 points32 points33 points 15 days ago
I think its more that 2 hours in, the acids really starting to take hold.
[–]woopthat 43 points44 points45 points 15 days ago
I'm assuming you've never taken acid. Unless you take some heroically large amount, you would be entirely capable of sitting at a typewriter and writing.
It's not as if you're transported to some completely immersive dream state like many tv/movie depictions would have you believe.
[–]groovinit 11 points12 points13 points 15 days ago
"heroically large"? Doesn't sound like you've taken a normal amount. My definition of a normal amount is: unable to write.
[–]ZeroThreshold 94 points95 points96 points 15 days ago
Totally makes sense when you read his works. My hero!
[–]selectedagainst2 104 points105 points106 points 15 days ago
One lesser known one I like was "Fear and Loathing: on the Campaign Trail" when he worked on McGovern's campaign against Nixon in the 72 election. One thing's for sure, Thompson hated Nixon with a passion. It's a great bathroom read for sure.
[–]verticaljeff 179 points180 points181 points 15 days ago*
Thompson hated Nixon with a passion.
Yep. His Nixon obituary stands as a monument to fearless testimony in political commentary.
[–]OIP 38 points39 points40 points 15 days ago
Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal.
hah!
[–]HankMcCoy7410 23 points24 points25 points 15 days ago
Thanks for posting that. That was a great read.
[–]hartofeugene 14 points15 points16 points 15 days ago
Great read. Heres a great comment from the article.
Always nice to reread. AV Club led me here most recently, this post specifically:
I knew a man years ago who was drinking buddies with HST, and he once brought a new girlfriend, who REVERED Thompson, to meet The Great Man -- sometime in the early 80s, I think. Thompson spent some time being a drunk, condescending, self-pitying blowhard to this young woman, talking about how he'd seen everything and done everything, and she would never comprehend any of it, and he should just go end it all now, 'cause his best work was behind him and what did he have to live for anyway, right? After some time of this, and one more reiteration of "what do I have to live for?" the young woman looked him in the eye and said,
"To write Richard Nixon's obituary."
My friend said that HST sat back in the barroom booth like he'd been punched, with the wind knocked out of him, and it was the only time he'd seen the man speechless. Then he smiled and had another drink and stopped being a maudlin blowhard.
I was told this before either RMN or HST were dead, and it gave me great pleasure to see the young woman's prophecy, or whatever, fulfilled when it was.

I've read some Thompson in my time, but I had never read that obit before. Thanks for the link. That was a scathing and fucking cathartic read. How I miss the good doctor!

Notice it says he was "ready to write," and he probably was, but when he sat down at the typewriter all he could do was stare at it. Five minutes later he's drinking and smoking again.
I know Hunter was a monster, but anything he wrote after that day would have been gibberish. I'd take this list with a grain of cocaine and a jigger of Chivas.
[–]crowbarhamlincoln 4 points5 points6 points 15 days ago
You've either never tried to write on 6 hours of poly drug abuse, or you haven't read a lot of his serious journalist work. Cause, damn - on all accounts.

I wish I was Johnny Depp. Not because of his riches and A-list status, but because he was best friends with this fucking legend of a man!

He goes to sleep at 8:20 AM and wakes up at 3PM. So that's 6 hours and 40 minutes of sleep. That's a lot for someone who seems to snort in a day what Lindsay Lohan snorts in a day and half.

[–]aekitten 22 points23 points24 points 15 days ago
I did a doubletake at the sleep until I saw that too. Ten hours after dropping acid is usually the part of the night where I'm not seeing anything interesting anymore, chewing gum because my jaw keeps clenching, and wishing to high heaven I could get to sleep, but can't.
[–]JasonGD1982 8 points9 points10 points 15 days ago
LPT. When you drop acid have some benzodiazepines around. They can help take the edge off the whole trip and when you're done with tripping just take a few more. It's the only way I can trip now.
[–]boxerej22 7 points8 points9 points 15 days ago
I don't want to fuck with benzos because you seriously cannot kick an addiction to those things
[–]JasonGD1982 9 points10 points11 points 15 days ago
Oh yeah absolutely. Fuck them but I only trip maybe once a year. So if I take benzos once a year to enjoy my trip I'm okay with that. LPT: don't abuse benzos. They are actually one of the only drugs you can die from withdrawal symptoms.

I idolized Hunter S Thompson in High School but I also know that the person who wrote this had to get paid too and they probably didn't care that for every 1 person who becomes a great writer, this diet creates 1000 dead, diseased, or desolate persons. I'm not "the man," I still smoke weed almost every day, but I wish I could tell High School kids that this isn't reality.
[–]BakedGood 4 points5 points6 points 15 days ago
Have you read anything he wrote? Thompson didn't idolize this at all. He still lived it though.
One of his primary messages in Vegas was that there were no existential answers to be had for $5/hit and the hippie generation was a failure that led to a bunch of burn outs.
He glorified the freedom to act like this, not the behavior itself.
[–]Colonel_Oscopy 19 points20 points21 points 15 days ago
Woah. Woody Creek Tavern is a 25-35 minute drive from Aspen Colorado, in Pitkin County, where Hunter ran for sheriff (he lost). I would not say Woody Creek Tavern is in the middle of nowhere, however, it sure as hell isn't an easy drive, even when you are sober. It is about 10 or 15 minutes off the highway, down some windy mountain roads. I can't imagine making that drive as fucked up as Hunter used to make it. Doing it sober can be scary for city folk during the night time hours.
Also, they have Hunter S. Thompson For Sheriff stickers hanging all over that restaurant. And the margaritas are great.

The top comment of this thread suggesting this is all lies, and that the best source for information on Hunter S Thompson is his trophy wife he married in his 60s that never knew him in his prime and has been cashing in his on legacy ever since is the real "lie" and it's pissing me off beyond belief.
Hunter S Thompson's drug use was prolific and unbelievable, so says everyone that ever knew him closely, and it's the reason that he was a cult hero and not maybe one of the greater writers ever. His wife, Jann Wenner his main publisher, many of his editors, all described a life of incredible excess where Thompson dedicated most of his best years to living up to Roaul Duke persona rather than being the best writer he could be.
To dispel the shitty myth of this top comment here are some quotes from Rolling Stones oral history:
Jann Wenner: He was a drug addict. He loved drugs. He took massive amounts of them. And if you were with him, you took them. He enjoyed drugs, all kinds of them, day and night, really with no break for years on end.
Ed Bradely It was Hunter's Life. He'd been doing it most of his life, and I didn't feel that I was going to be the one to change him, because I don't think he wanted to change. Hunter was an alcoholic, a serious alcoholic. He got up and drank for breakfast, he drank all day, he drank all night. And he was a drug addict - he started with drugs in the morning, he used drugs all day, he used drugs all night, and sometimes he'd stay up for two or three days straight on drugs. He was a serious addict.
George Stranahan A lot of us who knew him well were concerned about the excess and the self-destructive behavior.
William Kennedy In the later years, when his substance intake got more intense, it was hard to get serious with him.
Tim Cahill I didn't have to work directly with Hunter. I'd spend one night out with him and then spend two days recuperating - but when I'd run into him two days later, he'd still be going from the last time I saw him.
Sandy Thompson (his 1st wife for 10 times as long as Anita) At Owl Farm, you did a lot of cocaine, and at times you did too much. That's not a problem. You just take something else. If you're really bad, you take quaaludes. If you were not so bad, then you just smoked a good strong joint. But you could always go up. And you could always come down. There were so many options.
Joe Esterhas I was a real heavy drinker and knew how to enjoy drugs, but I was nothing compared to this guy. We would have breakfast at eleven in the morning, and it would consist of five or six Bloody Marys and twelve or fourteen lines of coke. By the middle of the day I was nearly passed out sitting at my desk, but he could do that all day.
Tobias Perse He Fed-Exed me cocaine before the trip, and the phone there was that strange code or etiquette of drug suers. It took me years of later experience to really recognize how much cocaine he was sending, but one day I got a package containing a thick pile of National Geographics with a hole cut out inside - like the way you'd cut out the inside of a Bible to put a gun in it. And it was sealed with tape on every side and sprayed with Right Guard. This was three hundred, four hundred grams in two zip-locked bags (this was for a couple weeks he sent this).
How the fuck is the #1 comment on HST saying his drug use was overblown and this is a "lie" and "Anita Thompson knew him best." Does this sound like a man who was putting on a front?
Shame on you reddit, shame. Hunter S Thompson lived the craziest life of excess he could, for your entertainment, to his own detriment and to the detriment of his writing, and his family, and you're not even going to give him that? Make up shit like "it was all a myth?" Fuck reddit, I thought you were better than this. He really did live like this. Really. Every day. It's not what made him great but he got trapped into thinking it was. He could have been 10 times as great if it had been a myth, but it wasn't.
[–]interreddit 6 points7 points8 points 15 days ago
Sigh, yes. Thread has become how??
Easy...wake up, need coke...need to change that buzz, too...booze, whiskey, single malt please..ouch...a spliff would do nicely thank you...more coke, gotta stay alert...

That's part of it. He did a lot of shit that society says will destroy you. It didn't destroy him, it allowed him to be one of the greatest journalists of all time. The only thing that was allowed to kill Thompson was himself.

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
Hunter S. Thompson
[–]vincentrevelations 49 points50 points51 points 15 days ago
Thompson was rich and disciplined/motivated enough to stay healthy. Your everyday addict is poor and focused on their addiction. That's a totally different life, and in those cases society is mostly right.
[–]mozza5 3 points4 points5 points 15 days ago
I wouldn't say rich, he certainly wasn't broke but he wasn't wildly rich either. There's a good bit on youtube about his finances
[–]Dokterrock 5 points6 points7 points 15 days ago
I think that's a common misconception about anybody who is a celebrity. Not that it isn't true in many cases, but HST was certainly not rich.
[–]eric22vhs 4 points5 points6 points 15 days ago*
Agreed. Most addicts live the highlife for a short bit, maybe some a little longer than others, until the shit hits the fan, then they go to rehab or whatever, some get clean, some have minor relapses throughout the rest of their life, others don't and wind up doing dirtier and cheeper drugs until they're basically an insane homeless person.
Thompson managed to keep it going for way way longer than most.
[–]Colorado_Dubstep 16 points17 points18 points 15 days ago
Ummm, as someone who used to live for years pretty much exactly the way described in the article I have no idea how Thompson did it as long as he did. After about three years of that shit I was so strung out, run down, and depressed it's hard to believe. If you don't think that lifestyle is what eventually led to his suicide you're crazy. Do that shit long enough and heavily enough and it will just leave you hollow and miserable and the fun will be long gone, I promise you that.
[–]wevcss 9 points10 points11 points 15 days ago
He was lucky enough to have his shit seen and eventually become rich and famous. A person can be just as creative as him and have the same drug habits but it will destroy them if they arent as fortunate as Thompson to get his work seen. edit: and the coke wasn't what was making him creative.

Depp paid for his entire funeral in fact and for his ashes to be "...fired from a cannon to the tune of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" and Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." That's from wikipedia, but i'm also just about to finish The Strange and Terrible Saga of HST by Paul Perry which is a great read and gives some good insight as to how editors dealt with his antics.

[–]laurencew37 4 points5 points6 points 15 days ago*
I'm a big fan of Hunter, but i find this a bit dubious. Even the preface admits it may be apocryphal. It seems just a bit of a romanticised piece (e.g. "Midnight - Hunter ready to write"). It probably was just a composite of how Hunter lived in general, as opposed to being his consistent daily routine.
[–]iwanderasiwonder 16 points17 points18 points 15 days ago*
hate to interrupt the circle jerk but some reminders are in order I feel.
Thompson's "activities" tend to overshadow his writing, which is tragic as Hunter's work was first and foremost an absolutely outstanding example of American literature, and until some young punk challenges his throne Thompson may be considered the most recent influential writer of the 1900's. His work is comparable to that of Hemingway's and Faulkner's in this regard and under no circumstance should the shitty movies cause us to forget this. The great tragedy of his extracurricular behavior being so legendary is that the public tends to associate him only with extreme drug use and not with truly fantastic and innovative writing that left us all wanting more while Hunter was busy driving himself towards an early self-imposed grave.
Nobody else gets to be Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.
Thompson's tale is one of both triumph and tragedy, an American artist and icon uplifted into infamy among counter-culture youths ironically by the exact same vices that took him from us too early, too soon.
When the going gets weird, the weird read Great Shark Hunt for the fiftieth fucking time and dream of a Rum Diaries adaptation that didn't completely blow as well as for a public that will appreciate the genius of the last rebel with a cause. '37-'05 R.I.P

"Breakfast is the only meal of the day that I tend to view with the same kind of traditionalized reverence that most people associate with Lunch and Dinner. Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty-four hours and at least one source of good music… All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of a hot sun, and preferably stone naked."
-Hunter S. Thompson
