Conan with Hunter S. Thompson + some hard liquor & guns http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNEImAIM4L4

[–]MessWithMeOnce 13 points14 points ago

From Wikipedia: In July 2000, he shot his then assistant Deborah Fuller and told reporters she'd been wounded because he had "mistaken her for a bear".

This is the only sentence on the matter.

[–]tiltedsun 2 points3 points ago

There actually was a bear behind her that had been rummaging around his compound. When he shot at it, the buck shot skipped off the gravel and well...she took some by accident.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 2 points3 points ago

He was an excellent shot and was trying to kill the bear. He speaks about it in a lot of sources. I'm thinking Generation of Swine: Tales of Shame and Degradation in the 80's he explains the situation in great detail, and calls it the only mark on his safety record.

[–]EHoffman922 45 points46 points ago

"The safety guy just said move your whiskey before you shoot"

[–]Geotic 12 points13 points ago

I, too, watched the video

[–]DreamWalker64 2 points3 points ago

Cause you know, you've gotta keep the whiskey safe!

[–]whubbard 0 points1 point ago

Smokeless powder in your whiskey sucks.

[–]DreamWalker64 0 points1 point ago

Whenn you're Drunk, Taste doesn't seem to matter as much. But Reallys good point.

Edit* sorry, a little drunk, maybe a really drunk. Right now.

[–]whubbard 0 points1 point ago

Edit* sorry, a little drunk, maybe a really drunk. Right now.

Let's be serious. The only time worth visiting /r/drunk is when you're drunk. It's not nearly as much fun otherwise.

[–]live52 13 points14 points ago

I've seen it before but post it as many times as you want: my heroes. I like that you can hardly understand anything HST says: unh, besshototheday.

[–]thecarolinelinnae 9 points10 points ago

This....I want to live like this.

[–]t_base 2 points3 points ago

At least he didn't want to play "William Tell" or it could have gone this way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Burroughs#Mexico_and_South_America

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 1 point2 points ago

Oh god, Burroughs was never the same after that. The repetition of 'Wake up honey, it's time for our William Tell routine' from Naked Lunch tears me up.

[–]OoRI0T_P0LICEoO 0 points1 point ago

This guy seems like a badass that I would feel privileged to shoot and drink with anyday

[–]DanFrantheMan26 80 points81 points ago

The fact he got to 67 is wonderful.

[–]Drunken_Editor 180 points181 points ago

On a serious note, he got to 67 and decided he was done.

[–]benstillerfaggot69x 7 points8 points ago

Imagine reaching a state in your life in which you just say: "meh, I've lived enough, I don't need anymore"

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 2 points3 points ago

he had been planning on it for a long time.

[–]noNoParts 41 points42 points ago

Died by his own hand, so who knows how long he would have made it.

[–]bearfuckers420 16 points17 points ago

He had some serious health problems because of his alcohol and cocaine habits though. There's multiple theories as to why (or if) he killed himself, but if everything is as it seems he most likely couldn't bear living in the amount of pain he was in.

[–]lizard_king_rebirth 36 points37 points ago

I heard it was Courtney Love.

[–]Donitsu 22 points23 points ago

It's always Courtney Love.

[–]ScottColvin 0 points1 point ago

He had been told he had six months to live since he was around 30. Hence the huge monument. The man had been waiting to die for a long time.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 0 points1 point ago

He had always said he'd be the one to take his own life. With the liver damage from coke and booze, the doctors also said he suffered from chronic dehydration for so long it played hell with his body and mental state. That's an interesting thought.

[–]A_CUNTY_DOG 79 points80 points ago

I noticed he stopped doing coke at 5.45, 15 minutes later he smokes weed, then an hour later eats lunch without any coke inbetween. It said 'to take the edge of' but this is clearly so he can actually eat. Then he eats enough for another 24 hours.

[–]--moot-- 35 points36 points ago

A method to the madness.

[–]dondrizzy 22 points23 points ago

Don't forget about the hot tub Dove Bars and fettuccine alfredo at 6a. You have to have a good base for that 'morning' Chivas.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

Coke wears off pretty quick. An hour is plenty of time, imo.

[–]Anaxan 108 points109 points ago

One of God's own prototypes.

[–]mustCRAFT 97 points98 points ago

Too weird to live, too rare to die.

[–]docblue 5 points6 points ago

not rare enough apparently.

[–]Beeristheanswer 16 points17 points ago

That's actually a quote about Dr. Gonzo, Raoul Dukes lawyer.

[–]drgk 4 points5 points ago

But equally applicable.

[–]case9 3 points4 points ago

[–]STEVE_H0LT 2 points3 points ago

[–]UrShiningDesire 2 points3 points ago

STEVE HOLT!

(Obligatory)

[–]patsrule711 148 points149 points ago

My lord that is absolutely insane.

[–]eyememine 36 points37 points ago

I know, how is he able to eat that much after doing that much blow?

[–]anonymous_ex_junkie 34 points35 points ago

Weed.

[–]Forever420 10 points11 points ago

"to take the edge off" ;)

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 2 points3 points ago

The biggest cokehead I ever met was this big ol' guy. He'd put a turkey in the oven at like 5am, go to bed and wake up every couple hours to check on it, then start his day. That guy ate a lot.. and did a lot of blow.

[–]40ozphil 2 points3 points ago

I think I like this guy. Any more stories? Care to elaborate? He sounds like a character.

[–]anonymous_ex_junkie 19 points20 points ago

My days used to be spent pretty much like this. I'm not exaggerating in the least. Except instead of Chivas Regal, my poison was Maker's Mark. And punctuate some of the night writing with staying out playing competitive pool games.

I also used to eat my first meal a little closer to waking up than he did. The fact that he smoked grass before eating was absolutely necessary on top of all that coke, but that combination always gave me intense paranoia, so I just made sure I had something in my stomach before my first line of the day. If not, I wouldn't eat. But I'd still drink heavily the rest of the day while doing more cocaine. I'm sometimes surprised my heart didn't explode through my chest.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 8 points9 points ago

What in the hell did you do for a living?

[–]Syriom 5 points6 points ago

Cocain.

[–]thetebe 1 point2 points ago

What kkind of money are we talking to keep that thing going on a daily basis? To someone like me that hardly drink at all it is facinating to say the least.

[–]iriegypsy 52 points53 points ago

It sounds doable to me. The only problem would be to find a place that sells taco salad, carrot cake, ice cream cheese burgers and onion rings. Other than that it seems like a fun day that would be easy to repeat.
Edit; wtf is a bean fritter?

[–]nopropulsion 23 points24 points ago

I feel like a restaurant like that isn't that hard to find in the US.

You could probably get really close at a Fridays or Chilis I bet.

[–]lizard_king_rebirth 34 points35 points ago

Yeah but they likely would frown on the cocaine.

[–]HasFuckedYourMom 68 points69 points ago

Goddamn conservatives.

[–]iriegypsy 10 points11 points ago

I bet that if you found a smallish pub and asked for these items to be ready for you in advance they would have no problems getting them for you. If you are a regular and spend a bit of money wile tipping well they would be sure help out with odd requests.

[–]thetebe 2 points3 points ago

This is exactly why you should be a nice regular. It opens a world of fun!

[–]GORILLAMAFIA17 2 points3 points ago

Golden corral.

[–]NickWasHere09 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, but then you'd have to go to Golden Corral.

[–]Kage2021 4 points5 points ago

I bet you a thousand dollars you can't do that much high quality cocaine and eat that much food.

You would probably be fighting the urge to puke before you took the first bite.

[–]iriegypsy 4 points5 points ago

A good puke between two parked cars would be a nice refresher.

[–]Tofusteak 2 points3 points ago

Personally I think the only food that would be difficult to find would be the carrot cake. Not an uncommon cake, but rarely seen on the dessert menu. Burgers, onion rings and taco salad are staples of most diners I have been to.

[–]za72 2 points3 points ago

The acid would scare me, other than that seems like a good time :)

[–]KallistiEngel 31 points32 points ago

You and I are different, the acid doesn't scare me, but the cocaine (and the sheer amount of it) does.

But I can understand how acid would be frightening to some folks. It's not for everyone.

[–]studdenfadden 13 points14 points ago

He never stated the amount of cocaine only the number of doses. I worked with a girl that would split a line into 8 bumps, which she would hit once an hour over the course of the 8 hour shift.

[–]KallistiEngel 10 points11 points ago

True, but this is Hunter S. Thompson we're talking about. "Too much" was a phrase that wasn't in his vocabulary.

[–]Askeladden 3 points4 points ago

:O What was her profession?

[–]studdenfadden 16 points17 points ago

We worked as bartenders in a strip club, so i was the only one not high.

[–]MadZane 8 points9 points ago

Definitely not a stripper doing that small of an amount.

[–]g0shua 4 points5 points ago

Why the surprise? It's significantly less than taking, say, an Adderall.

[–]febmo 7 points8 points ago

I like to call Adderall "diet coke"

[–]Jackson3125 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't that depend on the purity of the coke?

[–]g0shua 0 points1 point ago

Sure but cocaine gives you the buzz for about 30m and then it tapers off.

Whereas Adderall will keep you going for about 8 hours depending on the strength.

[–]Jackson3125 0 points1 point ago

Right, which is why she took bumps once an hour. Still, though, comparing coke to adderall is completely dependent on the purity of the coke.

[–]randomfunnyword 4 points5 points ago

Limiting cocaine use is pretty simple. Only buy enough cocaine for your purpose.

LPT When doing cocaine, you will do all the cocaine in your possession. Don't have more on hand than you can do in one sitting.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, he used coke in moderation in his later life. He had a tin he carried it around in and would do 'pinches' according to one article of these two kids setting out to find him, then hanging out with him one night.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 4 points5 points ago

Especially after doing blow all day. Only Hunter would enjoy that combo.

[–]Forever420 2 points3 points ago

uh, im sure if i had the tolerance he had, doing a few hits of acid after a day of coke is no big thing.

[–]istartriots 1 point2 points ago

those are two extremely different drugs. I don't understand your thinking at all.

[–]MessWithMeOnce 1 point2 points ago

The place where I work sells all these things, except the bean fritter.

[–]Needbouttreefiddy 6 points7 points ago

The Taco Salad, Cig, Cocaine stand on 8th ave? Great little joint.

[–]MessWithMeOnce 2 points3 points ago

I'm talking about all the food, but I'm sure if you ask nicely, the bartender will sell you an eight ball and you could bum a smoke from anyone who works there. So, yes it is a great joint.

[–]wittynametaken 1 point2 points ago

Woody creek tavern, near aspen Colorado, is a real place and does serve all these random food items.

Went there last year and had a blast. Also there is plenty of Hunter S. Thompson stuff to learn about all his crazy shenanigans.

[–]veni_vidi_defui 1 point2 points ago

Seeing that he ends the day with a benzo and get a good "night" of sleep, it's a rather rational approach to an extreme way of living.

Most tend to lose it due to not eating enough and lack of sleep.

[–]NewAccts 40 points41 points ago

Obviously this is a bit exaggerated. I have a few biographies of HST. People who know him admit that he consumed a lot of drugs, but not everyday routines like the article listed. IIRC, when someone was doing a piece on him, he would ramp up the consumption and craziness to live up to the persona he created.

For anyone interested. I think the biography by Jay Cowan is what seems to be the most realistic to me. He was the caretaker of HST's property in Colorado and knew him for 20-30 years. His biography portrays him as an actual human being, and not a caricature.

[–]new-socks 4 points5 points ago

Jesus fucking Christ, Eric... Jesus fucking Christ!!!!!

[–]thetebe 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for the tip, I need to find that one.

[–]famouslastwords 66 points67 points ago

He makes Ghandi look like a child pornographer.

[–]terdcrapley 115 points116 points ago

Considering his habit of sleeping naked with little girls, Ghandi makes ghandi look like a child pornographer.

[–]TayMac92 30 points31 points ago

BOOM. GOT EM

[–]this_sort_of_thing 4 points5 points ago

Meh, George Washington killed people and owned slaves, but nobody says a thing. What Ghandhi did was wrong, if true, but it's interesting how Reddit gets its panties in a twist over it over this guy any time he's mentioned. Almost every historical person through history had something questionable attached to them, what's different is how people perceive them (or choose to acknowledge them).

[–]Chewy96 12 points13 points ago

[–]soviet1924 1 point2 points ago

is that from the sweedish version of the girl with the dragon tattoo?

[–]thetebe 3 points4 points ago

Yep.

[–]isthataturtle 0 points1 point ago

i've seen that as both an up vote and a down vote.

I like the up vote one better

[–]jesushatesbaldpussy 1 point2 points ago

it all depends on the context.

[–]Cockaroach 0 points1 point ago

to be fair being a paedophile is pretty gross...

[–]lizard_king_rebirth 3 points4 points ago

And suits so fine, he made Sinatra look like a hobo.

[–]jjohn6438 0 points1 point ago

He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr.

Hunter S. was for the children.

[–]ihutch01 7 points8 points ago

WU-TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN!!!

[–]l0ngballs 4 points5 points ago

won't somebody Please wu-tang for the children??

[–]u155282 0 points1 point ago

The children are the future, and Wu-Tang is for the babies.

[–]RedStag86 16 points17 points ago

At least he was getting his vitamins with all that orange juice.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 4 points5 points ago

After Muhammed Ali told him he should eat a grapefruit everyday, thats just what he did.

[–]grahambfmv 13 points14 points ago

If that man sneezed it would look like Lapland

[–]clown_pants 11 points12 points ago

I love everything about that man.

Just remember this isn't for everyone

I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me -HST

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 13 points14 points ago

I'm pretty sure "violence" is in that quote too.

[–]Duck_Puncher 20 points21 points ago

Actually I fucked up the whole thing

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

I was once able to quote all of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", both the book and the movie. I guess this is a good sign that I should go back to it.

[–]hotsauceholocaust 1 point2 points ago

I have thought of this quote often now that he has killed himself. It adds an extra dimension to the words.

[–]yusomad90 9 points10 points ago

I don't like cocaine, I just like the smell of it.

[–]wyldezombie 23 points24 points ago

He is among them, but i realized the other day that most, if not all, of my heroes/idols are either alcoholics or dead alcoholics.

[–]Drunken_Editor 33 points34 points ago

To be fair, being drunk facilitates writing by lowering inhibitions and letting the words flow. There's an article somewhere that looks at writers who gave up drinking and how their work suffered for it. Lesson: if you wanna make it in the big leagues, kid, start chugging.

Source: username.

[–]Mr_Hank_Scorpio 26 points27 points ago

Great I'm half way there! Now I just need to be a writer!

[–]live52 3 points4 points ago

Alcohol is one way to deal with life and also writing.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 14 points15 points ago

Write drunk, edit sober. - Ernest Hemingway

Just look at any facebook post at 4am.

Gerald Olin: "You do drink don't you?" Mike Enslin: "Of course. I just said I was a writer."

[–]MadZane 8 points9 points ago

I need 6 heinekens and 6 margaritas

But Sir, there are only 3 of you at the table

I don't give a good god damn if there are 33 at the table, I need 6 heinekens and 6 margaritas!

[–]I_knowa_guy 13 points14 points ago

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Do you know the story behind it? I googled, and just found repositings of the image but no story about it.

Seems fake to me, like a set up, as in he wrote the check and took a photo of it, but never actually did anything with it.

[–]18-24-61-B-17-17-4 2 points3 points ago

Check #101 as well so it's the first one on that account.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 1 point2 points ago

I think it was Charlie Chaplain who always used checks because he knew no one would ever cash something with his signature on it.

[–]I_knowa_guy 0 points1 point ago

Better question, if it is true how long would that last him?

[–]zenlogick 2 points3 points ago

a gram of cocaine in the 70s was about 230 dollars. so thats roughly 9000 grams of cocaine, or about 8.6 kilos of cocaine. Thats roughly 18 pounds of cocaine.

Dude lived it up.

[–]I_knowa_guy 0 points1 point ago

That's one hell of a year's worth or your final month's worth

[–]Berlusconi 3 points4 points ago

I'm sure /r/drugs approves of this as well.

[–]tnuts420 8 points9 points ago

it was posted there yesterday. i actually came to say i'm glad to see i'm not the only one both /r/drunk and on /r/drugs

[–]fastbreak 0 points1 point ago

[–]massivecoiler 1 point2 points ago

as does /r/gonzo

[–]WhiteRi0T 3 points4 points ago

Cocaine, cocaine, and more cocaine

[–]live52 2 points3 points ago

At least he was consistent.

[–]WhiteRi0T 2 points3 points ago

The fact that he lived to be 67 is incredible

[–]PolishDude 9 points10 points ago

He could have lived longer if he didn't blow his brains out. No pun intended.

[–]grodykody 2 points3 points ago

Buy the ticket take the ride

[–]vwrusso 2 points3 points ago

It never got weird enough for me.

[–]TyrannosaurusMatt 5 points6 points ago

I'm never saying "My tolerance is sooo high, you guys." ever again.

[–]MacDaddyA-Weezy 0 points1 point ago

wow. my new idol.

[–]thetebe 0 points1 point ago

Don't like him for his fucked up habits, LOVE HIM for his fantastic work. Look up his books, Very well spent time reading those. He had a razor sharp eye for things, something that came out quite well in "On the Campaign Trail 72'" and in "Kingdom of fear". Just read the guy.

[–]jesushatesbaldpussy 0 points1 point ago

It's kind of amazing what he accomplished, either because of or in spite of that regimen.

[–]thetebe 0 points1 point ago

I think I would say that he did it along side of the drugs and booze. The behaviour and reckless thirst for life and truth shone through in the letter collection of him jumping on a boat and traveling through South America. Dang, I want to go home, make a nice cup of tea and read straight through a HST book now.

[–]bdemented 2 points3 points ago

Time to step my game up.

[–]SellinThings 3 points4 points ago

Beast Mode.

[–]treetrouble 0 points1 point ago

Probably not true, but hilarious

[–]aestus 4 points5 points ago

This is Hunter S we're talking about. It might be a little exaggerated but probably not by much. The man had an appetite I can not fathom.

[–]the_dayman 0 points1 point ago

I want to go there.

[–]mehster432 1 point2 points ago

I know this is the obvious comment...but holy SHIT that's a lot of cocaine.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't say how much he did. It's kind of a mandatory every 20-30min kinda thing if you are going to do it at all.

[–]fillymandee 3 points4 points ago

It wouldn't be a 20-30 min kinda thing if we could find some decent goddamned cocaine in this country.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 0 points1 point ago

Eh, it kinda would anyway, that's just how long the peak of it lasts. Longer if you're drinking though.

[–]HugeDouche 0 points1 point ago

this is write drunk edit sober taken to a whole new level

[–]18-24-61-B-17-17-4 1 point2 points ago

That benzo to end the day is the real kicker.

[–]M0T0BACKhand 0 points1 point ago

Why

[–]fastbreak -1 points0 points ago

to take the edge off coming down from a lot of blow

[–]sanchogomez 1 point2 points ago

How he could consistently get to sleep after a dose of acid is beyond me.

[–]KallistiEngel 0 points1 point ago

Probably why he took the benzo in the first place.

Sometimes you have to force sleep or a comedown. Friends of mine used to use Seroquel for that.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 0 points1 point ago

That's what the benzo is for.

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 0 points1 point ago

I don't imagine he does everyday. And if he did, mushrooms and acid build up in your system so fast you have to take double the next day to come close. Actually I'm not sure if that applies to acid as much as shrooms, but you get the point.

[–]tiltedsun 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if the good doctor ever got to know the walrus (ambien)?

[–]sgtpartydawg 0 points1 point ago

livin the dream! I wish i could afford his daily expenses....

[–]GrandMoffJed 0 points1 point ago

I don't know how someone does cocaine all morning then has a lunch that could feed 4 people.

[–]--moot-- 3 points4 points ago

Marijuana.

[–]worsewithcomputer 1 point2 points ago

I wonder how accurate that is. I would imagine he did more cocaine.

[–]typecrime 1 point2 points ago

Well, this only lists the frequency of cocaine use. No mention of how much per go. I'm imagining big fat gator tails.

[–]SiNiquity 0 points1 point ago

I too enjoy a 6 am dip in the hot tub with fettuccine Alfredo

[–]fastbreak 0 points1 point ago

how he can eat all that food while doing so much blow is beyond me

[–]KallistiEngel 1 point2 points ago

That's what the weed was for.

[–]typecrime 1 point2 points ago

Jeezustittyfuckingchrist.

[–]edtehgar 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit? Dove bars and Fettuccine Alfredo? Sign me up!

[–]KallistiEngel 1 point2 points ago

Whether this is true or not, whiskey snow cones are awesome. I've only had them a couple times, at speakeasy parties. But they are pretty delicious. Give it a try sometime!

Also, unrelated, whiskey milkshakes. You only use a couple measures of whiskey for flavor. Surprisingly good.

[–]hmd27 0 points1 point ago

I never understood how people like him or Keith Richards could live as long as they do (did). I've rarely seen something as insane as what I just read.

[–]jesticle 0 points1 point ago

That's some crazy munchies.

[–]reginaphallangy 0 points1 point ago

Can the human body physically even handle that much cocaine? Damn...

[–]long_dong 0 points1 point ago

[–]CHIEF_HANDS_IN_PANTS 2 points3 points ago

Oh you haven't even started reading his books yet! this man was bonkers.

I'm perplexed by his desire for a grapefruit between 12 and 6am.

[–]tiltedsun 8 points9 points ago

He was big on grapefruit and Vitamin C, especially with Chivas.

“Breakfast is the only meal of the day that I tend to view with the same kind of traditionalized reverence that most people associate with Lunch and Dinner. I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty-four hours, and mine is breakfast. In Hong Kong, Dallas or at home — and regardless of whether or not I have been to bed — breakfast is a personal ritual that can only be properly observed alone, and in a spirit of genuine excess.

The food factor should always be massive: four Bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of coffee, Rangoon crepes, a half-pound of either sausage, bacon, or corned beef hash with diced chiles, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and something like a slice of Key lime pie, two margaritas, and six lines of the best cocaine for dessert…

Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty-four hours and at least one source of good music… All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of a hot sun, and preferably stone naked.”

― Hunter S. Thompson
