*Winner of the National Geographic Photo Contest. I submitted two photos myself, but there was tough competition obviously. My submission

[–]peeksvillain 3 points4 points ago

Your picture is beautiful. Where is your other submission?

[–]eenieooniewanna 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! My other submission is not quite a good. But here it is.

[–]cleffyowns 2 points3 points ago

That's an awesome picture

[–]OneOfDozens 1 point2 points ago

that's really cool, dragonfly/butterfly

[–]pandame 0 points1 point ago

Virginia represent!

Lovely photo, by the way.

[–]bpoag 1 point2 points ago

I would have honestly chosen this over the tiger.

[–]drum_playing_twig 17 points18 points ago

Isn't that a bit too derpy for NG?

[–]wigg1es 10 points11 points ago

NG, when it comes to wildlife and people, have always tended to favor shots that capture specific moments in time which convey action and emotion over perfect portraits.

I think it has depth. It sorta reminded me of the beauty of chaos in nature

Right, but is a garden hose a part of nature?

[–]chopsaver 0 points1 point ago

Is a zoo?

[–]happywaffle 1 point2 points ago

Its. Off its coat. (Also how is this not action?)

[–]cefriano 5 points6 points ago

[–]ecudorian 9 points10 points ago

why..?

[–]chriszimort 5 points6 points ago

I didn't think it was that good...

The lens he uses in this picture is 70mm-200mm. I have a lower end equivilant of this variety of lens (70-300mm) and at full extension at 300m, the lens alone measures roughly six inches long.

His lens though is probably much better in quality and range, and probably can shoot at high shutter speeds and a broader aperture (both elements that affect how much light is let into the camera).

To say the very least, this photographer was probably waiting in the grass for minutes, if not hours to get the right picture. Back to what I said earlier, depending on how far he zoomed in on the tiger, he could be steadying that in his hands for a long time, provided he doesn't have a tripod.

Also, he probably has the camera set at a higher shutter speed to catch all the water particles in motion, so (apart from possibly calibrating other camera settings to compensate his high shutter speed) when he's shooting this picture, he probably has multiple pictures of this one second that he has to sort through and determine which is best. Usually from a shoot like this, the amount of pictures in your workflow can number hundreds or even thousands.

So, as a tl;dr: This guy put a lot of time and effort into this picture, and it's pretty damn good, especially compared to those dinky little point and shoot cameras everybody has. Screw your opinion for thinking this is a sub-par picture.

*this photographer was probably waiting in the grass for minutes, if not hours to get the right picture.

this photographer was probably waiting, while drinking a coke and eating a churro, at the zoo, to get the right picture.

  • Stop being a gear jockeying wannabe know-it-all.
  • This photo was shot in a fucking zoo.
  • Did you even look at the other submissions that got honorable mentions?
  • No really, shut up, you sound like an ignorant twat.

[–]TL10 0 points1 point ago

Bad day?

[–]joebbowers 0 points1 point ago

Yeah.. shot in a zoo. Zero effort or skill here.

[–]btxtsf 0 points1 point ago

yeah it looks ridiculously overprocessed. as in the highlights and shadows have been majorly expanded. horrible looking contrast in that photo.

Background for the Picture:

Photo and caption by Ashley Vincent

"The subject's name is Busaba, a well cared for Indochinese Tigress whose home is at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Thailand. I had taken many portraits of Busaba previously and it was becoming more and more difficult to come up with an image that appeared any different to the others. Which is why I took to observing her more carefully during my visits in the hope of capturing something of a behavioural shot. The opportunity finally presented itself while watching Busaba enjoying her private pool then shaking herself dry. In all humility I have to say that Mother Nature smiled favourably on me that day!"

[–]gtsomething 26 points27 points ago

Does anyone else feel...weird that the the grand prize photo and nature winning photo for National Geographic was taken from a zoo...?

[–]_sevennine_ 12 points13 points ago

Yeah, there's a few people that are pissed about that and it's turning into a mild debate in some forums.

[–]sourguhwapes 11 points12 points ago

As it should, there are photographers that go to ridiculous lengths in the wild to get certain shots.

[–]MrFluffykins 3 points4 points ago

Just because picture didn't require you to hang from a cliff using a rope tied around your ankle doesn't mean it cannot be comparably as good.

[–]sourguhwapes 5 points6 points ago

While you might be right, I'm still not seeing what's all that special about this particular photo. Especially in comparison to the honorable mentions in the same category if it was shot in a zoo.

[–]_sevennine_ 1 point2 points ago

I agree, but at least they didn't hide the fact that they admit it from the start. Unlike the wolf photo from last year.

[–]inakarmacoma 0 points1 point ago

oh no, i hate mild debates

[–]_sevennine_ 0 points1 point ago

They're the worst! Either you're pissed or your not, you can't be kinda pissed.

[–]smegmabolus 4 points5 points ago

Yeah this is complete bullshit. Not only was it taken in a zoo but there is nothing remotely special about this photo. I hate it. Downvote me to hell. Don't care.

[–]bpoag 1 point2 points ago

Have an upvote. I agree.

[–]OneOfDozens 2 points3 points ago

downvoted for requesting

[–]Sven2774 -1 points0 points ago

Idk, it's an open zoo... still a little weird.

[–]bpoag 0 points1 point ago

If it has walls, its not open.

[–]Brutuss 0 points1 point ago

If it makes you feel any better, really sounds more like a National Park or nature preserve than a zoo

"8,000 animals of more than 300 types on the area of over 5,000 rais in the Kao Kheow – Kao Chom Poo Wildlife Conservation Area in Cholburi Province."

What should have won:

http://publicintelligence.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/expedition-29-7.jpg

View from the ISS, above the continental US, looking toward Chicago. A good 4-5 million people when viewing this picture can see the glob of light they grew up in. What makes this picture special is not just that it's cool looking....but that it shows what we, as an organism, do. How we build. Where we build. How we connect with eachother. What impact we have on our surroundings. And we see it through the eyes of the technology we make, from a friggin' machine we have in orbit, no less. Powered by the sun. AND there's an aurora on the horizon! AND it shows some nebulae in the night sky. Things so close, things so recognizable juxtaposed with things so far away that go unnoticed...WTF more do you want?

Oh, that's right. A tiger in a zoo shaking water off.

I spent half my teenage life searching for naked tribal tits in National Geographic and now that I'm old enough and wise enough to find internet porn, boom, wet pussy is picture of the year.

[–]Aphex117 1 point2 points ago

Pretty slow year...

[–]glass_daggers 1 point2 points ago

I love National Geographic, it is always filled with the most fantastic imagery, which leads me to ask:

Why the hell is a derpy cat taking a bath at a zoo the picture of the year? Is there something to this I am not seeing?

[–]bpoag 1 point2 points ago

No.

The choice sucked.

[–]joebbowers 1 point2 points ago

I wonder who she slept with to win.

[–]bpoag 1 point2 points ago

Hey, NatGeo?

Of all the things on earth, of all the natural beauty, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, for an entire year.... of all the seasons and eclipses that happened, all the erupting volcanoes, all the thunderstorms, sunrises, sunsets, moonlit oceans, auroras, bioluminescence, camoflauge, caves, valleys, cliffs and plains....for every bit of nature, from a worm to a whale...

..you chose a partially out-of-focus tiger (edit: in a zoo!) with a dumb look on its face, shaking water off?

...really?

[–]thatsxelant 0 points1 point ago

That eye makes it look soooo wild and out of control... I love it!!

[–]badwolf99 0 points1 point ago

Oh silly tiger, you're so adorable .

[–]joebbowers 0 points1 point ago

Taken at a zoo, from safely outside the tiger cage, with days and days to come back and get the shot right. This is an insult to real National Geographic photographers.

[–]superstoreman 2 points3 points ago

Look at the majesty of that creature. Great photo, even in still form you can see its power and grace.

[–]pillowpants80 0 points1 point ago

..from behind the bars at the zoo.

(The fact that it is in captivity has cause some discussion about it being a winner for National Geographic)

[–]demedial 1 point2 points ago

Looking through the winners gallery I have noticed one thing, regardless of location, they are all great shots.

[–]bigmouth_strikes 0 points1 point ago
