Am I the only one who was constantly thinking Stephen = Uncle Ruckus?

Are you seriously wondering if an Uncle Tom character reminded anyone else of a caricature of an Uncle Tom person? Are you not aware of the phrase Uncle Tom?

Stephen was quite different than Uncle Ruckus though. The scene in the library shows the power Stephen had over Candy, and his assumed importance in the household. Could you imagine Uncle Ruckus sitting in the white man's chair, drinking his Sherry, and calling him a fool for not seeing the con?

The main similarity beyond physical is that of race traitor.

My first comment after seeing the movie was "I love how they brought uncle tom to life like that," but as noted above, one uncle tom is another uncle tom.
