Assuming the infection never touches the island, yes. However, if you had any zombies running through that dense jungle and over the mountains into the bowl-shaped valley, I'd say that's the perfect place for the undead to completely annihilate the population, simply by cornering them, or through sheer surprise offered by the dense foliage.

it's when you go to a major population center (remember how bad atlanta was?) that they overpower you.

According to the topological map I got to through the wikipedia article it has a ferry from Tokyo. It's the southern-most island that has ferry access from Tokyo if you go through the same link (the link takes you to the center of Tokyo and not to the island, you have to zoom out and go due south to the last island that has a ferry connection).
