I think Tropic Thunder represents the single most effective use of black-face in history

Suck an eggggggg

[–]Zories 10 points11 points ago

Just finished Season 7 on Netflix; damn that show is funny.

[–]ShawnGupta 4 points5 points ago

huh?

[–]Zories 12 points13 points ago

Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia...

[–]TylerDurdenisreal 4 points5 points ago

look up Lethal Weapon 5 on youtube

[–]underwatr_cheestrain 148 points149 points ago

The fact that Robert Downey Jr. didn't receive an Oscar for his performance in this movie is a travesty.

[–]BasicDesignAdvice 50 points51 points ago

the real travesty is that their isn't an Oscar for "Best Performance in a Comedy."

[–]Dildo_Dan 13 points14 points ago

I agree I've had this discussion before with some folks. Its harder to make someone laugh than it is to make them cry

[–]denizenKRIM 4 points5 points ago

Eh? I've laughed a shit ton more at actors, than I have cried.

Not to discount the talent of comedy of course, but laughter is definitely far more of a commonality than full-on tearful crying.

[–]DeltaBurnt 0 points1 point ago

Though it's fair to say that it's about as hard to make me cry from laughter than it is to make me cry from a sad thought.

[–]eksekseksg3 3 points4 points ago

Never thought about that, but it's damn true.

[–]brawr 72 points73 points ago

Well he was going up against Health Ledger for TDK.

Any other year but that one, I'd agree with you.

[–]Goodwell 23 points24 points ago

Health Ledger

Intentional?

[–]Big_h3aD 2 points3 points ago

You gave me a feel...

[–]Pr0PipeLayer -1 points0 points ago

Otherwise the reddit police will get you.

[–]PissingontheCarpet 167 points168 points ago

Man. I'm still laughing at this. I've thought it so many times. Closing apps, dimming brightness, using as little of the precious life it has....

[–]DaColonelSanders 88 points89 points ago

And you know at that point, turning it off is out of the question... The mere energy to turn it back on would drain the rest of the precious battery life you have left!

[–]Masculinum 49 points50 points ago

Haha, that reminds me of Kramer driving on reserve fuel

[–]PissingontheCarpet 1 point2 points ago

Haha. When he is driving with the car salesman. But he is enjoying the last bits of life in the car, while I fear the last 1% turning into a rotating circle of death.

[–]shoffobroff 32 points33 points ago

TURN OFF THE 3G!!

[–]BombTheFuckers 14 points15 points ago

Dude has a point. GPRS uses a lot less power than 4G, 3G or WiFi.

[–]lovelycapybara 4 points5 points ago

Isn't GPRS the same as 3G? I've always been a bit confused over that. And is there a way to control which type of mobile data you use? I keep data on constantly just for instant message apps, I'd love to have a data mode that uses less power (and speeds are irrelevant with IM).

[–]BombTheFuckers 9 points10 points ago

  • GPRS = 2G = slooooooooowwwww (but enough for IM and email)
  • UMTS = 3G = ~40kb/s
  • HSDPA = 3.5G (I hink) = ~7Mbit

[–]lovelycapybara 2 points3 points ago

Ah, I see. So is there a way to force your connection down to 2G?

[–]Cleanup_crew 2 points3 points ago

Don't know about other phones, but on Android, widgets like power control allow you to add a control for enabling/disabling 4G, 3G, etc.

[–]shoffobroff 0 points1 point ago

Even in the Network settings in Android you can force 2g

[–]BeezAweez 1 point2 points ago

LTE~50 Mbps

[–]OmegaVesko 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget HSPA+. HSPA 42 has a theoretical limit of 42Mbps.

[–]BeezAweez 1 point2 points ago

Keyword: theoretical. I've never seen H+ past 12 Mbps

[–]OmegaVesko 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough. Note though, not all HSPA+ networks are HSPA 42. Many are HSPA 21.

[–]carsontl 0 points1 point ago

"your mileage may vary"

[–]Shadow647 1 point2 points ago

LTE's max. speed is theoretical, too.

[–]zants 1 point2 points ago

Is that 50 Mbps for every cellphone? That's insane. What's it in "real" numbers (given the amount of packet loss)?

[–]JinMarui 0 points1 point ago

I thought GPRS was to GSM phones as 1xRTT is to CDMA.

Lolz acronyms. In other words, I think it's 2G. I have Verizon though, so I get bumped down to 1x when I shut off LTE and EVDO.

[–]OmegaVesko 0 points1 point ago

Nope! GPRS/EDGE is 2G. 3G uses more power. 4G (LTE or HSPA+) uses the most.

[–]jackshazam 9 points10 points ago

Reminds me of savoring my car's last bit of gas on the way to a gas station. I remember specifically one instance where my dash read "36 miles until empty" when I left my parent's house and by the time I reached the gas station next to my house on campus the dash had been reading "1 mile until empty" for about 3 miles (it takes roughly 45 minutes to get to university). During the the time when the dash read about 10 miles until empty and when I knew that I was still about 20 minutes away I was so worried about running out of gas that I had turned off the air conditioning and for every down hill slope I put my car in neutral. I was trying to use as little of the gas I had left to try and survive until a gas station.

[–]StalinsLastStand 0 points1 point ago

In neutral? Did you turn it off too? I'm pretty sure that taking your foot off the gas and idling is the same regardless of the gear.

[–]Shadow647 3 points4 points ago

Fun fact: there also are non-automatic transmission cars, in which, taking your foot off the gas induces engine braking.

[–]StalinsLastStand 1 point2 points ago

Then that's not any different than driving down a hill in a manual anyway, since you'll always pop it into neutral down a hill there is no reason to act like it's a special occasion when you're low on gas.

[–]forceez 2 points3 points ago

I was thoroughly confused for a second when I read that as 'cat'

[–]jackshazam 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately, my cat never runs out of gas...

[–]Tenshik 5 points6 points ago

What does it fucking matter if it's going to die? You're headed home, you aren't going to cease to exist in the ten minute window it takes you to wedge your way into your house to plug it in. Holy fuck you people are freaks. Taking the whole tied to your phone trope to a whole new level.

[–]Moonsocks 2 points3 points ago

My understanding is letting it die hurts the battery life permanently. Laugh at the joke or move on. With at attitude like that people are going to want you to disappear for a lot more than ten minutes.

[–]Shadow647 5 points6 points ago

That understanding is quite wrong, though. Being closer to 0% is healthier for a Li-Ion battery than being closer to 100%.

[–]Moonsocks 0 points1 point ago

By letting it die meant the device no longer turning on. Does that mean it has no harmful effect? If that's the case I won't be freaking out about my phones battery at all anymore.

[–]Shadow647 1 point2 points ago

It'll only die if you'll leave it completely discharged for a really long period of time (I'm talking few weeks here). Few hours (or whatever you realistically may need until reaching the charger) in fully discharged state won't hurt your battery.

[–]astrobotanical 0 points1 point ago

Except if you need your phone for an emergency.

[–]Ephaliate 6 points7 points ago

So close to a perfect loop.....

[–]popsickletits 0 points1 point ago

[–]so269 0 points1 point ago

I hate it when I have to put my phone into Apollo 13 mode.

[–]griffdog14 0 points1 point ago

hahaha that's what I call it too when I go all power-saving on my phone

[–]proud_to_be_a_merkin 0 points1 point ago

It's like how your body stops sending blood to your extremities in order to preserve your core where all your important organs are.

[–]Murderpeg 18 points19 points ago

Go full recharge.

[–]HMS_Pathicus 9 points10 points ago

You never go full recharge.

[–]sgrodgers10 10 points11 points ago

...car charger?

[–]fondots 0 points1 point ago

I used to drive around in my parents old Buick before I got my own car. I loved that car and mechanically there isn't a damn thing wrong with it to this day despite being 21 years old, but the weirdest things are broke on it. Like the fuse blew for the cigarette lighter and the light for the heat/AC Controls. That's an easy enough fix except that the fuse box is in the glove compartment which has been stuck closed for about 7 years which means car-chargers are a no-go.

[–]southofaustin 35 points36 points ago

upvote cause this happened to me last night. I left my charger at work and it lasted all night with 1%. I woke up and it was still alive... I smiled and thought to myself "what a champ"

[–]Pulse99 24 points25 points ago

Too bad it's saturday.

[–]BombTheFuckers 11 points12 points ago

So? I've worked many Saturdays last year.

[–]Lurk4r 26 points27 points ago

This isn't about you!

[–]BombTheFuckers 5 points6 points ago

[–]OmegaVesko 1 point2 points ago

True, though he may not have another MicroUSB cable.

[–]bakabakablah 0 points1 point ago

Everyone should do themselves a favor and stock up on a few of these. There should be no excuse for "not having another MicroUSB cable" when there are great websites like MonoPrice to buy them from... especially since a 10ft cable (linked above) is less than $1.50 each.

[–]Haz3rd 15 points16 points ago

ITT: buzzkills

[–]procrastinating_atm 41 points42 points ago

If you're already on your way home, then what's the problem? Can you not live without your cell phone for 10-30 minutes?

[–]Poonslayer7 17 points18 points ago

What if there's an emergency like hitting a deer or something?

[–]alexeve77 7 points8 points ago

or a moose?

[–]redandblack555 24 points25 points ago

A moose bit my sister once.

[–]TheAubz 7 points8 points ago

Careful, you may get sacked for that comment.

[–]yangar 4 points5 points ago

And you have to Instagram it? What then?!

[–]procrastinating_atm 4 points5 points ago

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, help (or a phone) is never far away. If you consider having a working cell phone 100% of the time a top priority, then get a goddamn charger that you can plug into the cigarette lighter in your car.

[–]gamertager 0 points1 point ago

Then it makes more sense to turn off your phone, and save the last little bit of battery power. That way if a deer or some other emergency were to occur, you would still have a little battery left to turn your phone on and take a picture for that sweet sweet karma.

[–]CoCo26 10 points11 points ago

It takes more power to turn your phone on and off than it does to keep it on

[–]StalinsLastStand 1 point2 points ago

That sounds like it should be true, but I've never seen any indication that it is. Has someone tested that?

[–]MrMono1 -1 points0 points ago

I haven't tested it per se, but I've witnessed it many times.

[–]StalinsLastStand 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure I'm willing to accept that. Witnessed it under what circumstances? What sort of readings and comparisons were you able to make? Did you use percentage on turn-off v. percentage on boot-up and compare to percentage change over the same period of time with the phone on?

There has to be a point where the time in-between becomes the determining factor. It's exactly like whether it takes more gas to turn your car on and off or to idle. The time spent idling is what determines whether it is efficient, the time spent on but not in use would be determinative here.

It's just a joke people, don't overthink it.

[–]dvallej 15 points16 points ago

why the last 1% of my battery last longuer that the first 10%?

[–]BombTheFuckers 22 points23 points ago

Because the shown percentage is a lie. It always is, with every phone.

[–]dvallej 0 points1 point ago

why?

[–]BombTheFuckers 2 points3 points ago

Batteries are usually only charged up to 90 percent. That's supposed to give the battery more reload cycles before it has to be replaced.

To stop technologically challenged customers from returning their "broken" batteries, the OS will just lie to you.

[–]dvallej -1 points0 points ago

that explains it for the first 10%, but the second or 3rd 10% still last less than the last 1%

[–]meeps114 0 points1 point ago

Why does 90% give the battery more reload cycles?

[–]blackhawk465 5 points6 points ago

When a battery level sits at 100% it somehow damages the battery's charge and it won't hold as well so it fluxuates between 90% and 100% even though it says 100% charged.

Source: None. Read somewhere on reddit.

[–]Tailend22 1 point2 points ago

In laymans terms, I believe it works like this: when electrons flow through the battery, deposits build up on the battery that make it harder for new electrons to flow through. This means that the higher the battery charges, the more of these harmful deposits build up. So charging to 90% is better. Please note I have been drinking, do not have any useful qualifications and I am typing on my phone.

[–]builderb 2 points3 points ago

lithium polymer batteries do not like to be fully charged or fully discharged, it ruins the cycle-life.

[–]meeps114 0 points1 point ago

So is it also built in to not run completely out of power?

[–]ianamatic 1 point2 points ago

Id say yes. Because when mine dies i can turn it back on and it will start up again then die again.

[–]builderb 0 points1 point ago

Yes there are usually low voltage cut off circuits that keep the battery from being fully discharged. Totally discharging the cell can actually kill it.

[–]BombTheFuckers -1 points0 points ago

Beats me.

[–]Pr0PipeLayer 0 points1 point ago

Leave that to Chris Brown

[–]Fhwqhgads 0 points1 point ago

Even weirder, my ipod will be at like 1% and so I turn it off, come back and it's up to 40%.

[–]patooo 0 points1 point ago

When you discharge cell continuously, it reaches cut-off voltage. After rest, voltage goes up a bit, giving few minutes of runtime. But 40%, that is really high :) It depends on how fast were you discharging that cell and how actually that device reads and interprets voltage from cell. And of course what battery type is used.

[–]Fhwqhgads 0 points1 point ago

Playing games does it. Takes more processing power and drains it faster. It's even shut itself off before and came back after a few minutes.

[–]patooo 1 point2 points ago

Discharge curve of Li-ion or Li-pol cell maybe helps too. Drop from full charge (usually 4,10-4,2V) down to (for example) 4,0V is very fast compared to how cell holds capacity before it reaches cut-off voltage.

[–]redandblack555 4 points5 points ago

cough cough car charger cough cough

[–]Robbo7108 2 points3 points ago

Love this gif so much.

[–]fernvz 3 points4 points ago

There weren't no cell phones in '69 man I'm head to toe legitimate.

[–]The_Classy_Narwhal 2 points3 points ago

I't even worse when you don't know how to get back home. Once I was lost in the outskirts of a small town outside of Boston and I was trying to find the train back into the city and my phone was was at around 4%. Since I was using my phone's GPS, my battery was quickly diminishing. Also, it was sunset and the last train for the night was arriving soon and I had no idea where the station was. At least you were on your way home. I was close to not making it home at all and being stranded outside the city with no place to stay and no phone.

[–]gaylordsforce 2 points3 points ago

cover me, limp dick fuckers!!!!

[–]iampinkninja 1 point2 points ago

Pro tip: if you need that extra little bit of power so you can send a text (or whatever you use your phone for), take your battery out of your phone and put it in a warm place, like in a pocket next to your body or btn your leg and seat. Batteries store chemical potential energy in the chemical bonds of the battery's chemicals, NOT electric potential energy. The warmth will increase the rate of the chemical reaction the battery uses to produce a voltage, and your battery will charge itself, but only a little.

I had to do this today for about 5 min because I didn't have enough juice to send send a text saying my battery was dead. Otherwise it'd seem that I was being rude and didn't want to reply.

TLDR: warm up your battery for some emergency power, because of science.

[–]Shyyyster 3 points4 points ago

Am I the only person who has a car charger?

[–]Shadow647 5 points6 points ago

No, but you're the only person who can't imagine being on a way home on your feet, on a bike, on a bus, on a train, etc.

[–]Adios_numero_two 4 points5 points ago

Just charge it when you get home, if you're on your way home.

[–]Jcrash 1 point2 points ago

Time to feel old: this movie came out over four years ago.

[–]KyoTe44 9 points10 points ago

Yea. Feel old if you're like 12, shit. I was still fully legal to drink when this movie came out.

[–]Jcrash 4 points5 points ago

Ha, okay yeah, same here. I just meant I was surprised because it didn't feel like four years had passed.

[–]classy_stegasaurus 0 points1 point ago

No, feeling old is when you realize nobody understands why things were cool when you were a kid. This is feeling young

[–]dhcrazy333 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand... You are on your way home, what's the problem?

[–]UnfortunatelyMacabre 7 points8 points ago

If his phone shut off while driving home, he'd have to wait 1 minute for it to power on after reconnecting it to the charger.

[–]yuruku 1 point2 points ago

Unless he hit something or went off the road...

[–]DeathbatMaggot 5 points6 points ago

It's a joke.

[–]Rich73 0 points1 point ago

Does your phone have a power saving mode? It's good to use when in this situation, at least that's been my experience with Android.

You'd be surprised how much longer the battery can last if you don't mind background data being disabled until you can get to a charger, but even without background data you can still send / receive texts / mms & browse the web.. of course browsing isn't ideal when trying to conserve battery life though.

[–]mexicanStaringFrog 1 point2 points ago

Also when playing CS and there is only 1 player left on my team.

[–]Darierl 1 point2 points ago

that gif just keeps on giving

[–]bastardsnow 1 point2 points ago

[–]Drawtaru -1 points0 points ago

I don't have this problem. Mostly because I never use my phone.

I wish I had friends. ;_;

[–]SKREAM 0 points1 point ago

My iPhone shuts down when it says 2%

It's just lying to me.

[–]Lore86 1 point2 points ago

Happened today to me, battery was at 10% and I needed to go to another town but I was very lost: turn on 3G, turn on GPS, open Google navigator... estimated time 30 minutes... I was like: damn, I'm not gonna make it. During the route I really felt like this GIF.

[–]serrasponda -1 points0 points ago

Dat feel.

[–]shorty6049 0 points1 point ago

I feel like this is more of a problem these days than it used to be...

I feel like I used to be able to plug my phone in, even if it was completely dead, and turn it on immediately.

These days, If my phone dies, I have to leave it plugged in for at least 10 minutes or so before it'll even power back up, even with the charging cable plugged in.

Fuckin micro USB 5 volt bullshit!!

[–]gsogirl 0 points1 point ago

Yep my Kindle Fire takes a good 10-15 minutes to decide it's not too dead to come back on when I put it on the charger. My phone only takes about 5.

[–]shorty6049 1 point2 points ago

that happened with my nexus 7 last night. It was dead. I knew that because I hadn't used it in a few days.

Plugged it in, and instead of the usual charging symbol coming up on the screen, it went black with faint white static all over the screen like a broken TV or something. Finally tried turning it on this morning and it worked fine. Scared me a bit though

[–]gsogirl 0 points1 point ago

Hm weird, the Kindle will tell me it needs to charge for a "few minutes" before powering on. If I keep trying, even that screen won't come on.

[–]mike_x360a 0 points1 point ago

Even when it turns off I'll keep pressing the power button. :(

[–]quantumripple 0 points1 point ago

What happens when your phone runs out of battery?

[–]QuickSand1000 1 point2 points ago

[–]iampinkninja 1 point2 points ago

[–]GoMrJoe -5 points-4 points ago

Why can nobody live without their phone for ten god damned minutes? On the shitter, going home -- Am I the only person who just uses a phone as a fucking phone?

[–]roionsteroids 1 point2 points ago

But what if your 700 facebook friends cant chat with you for 10 minutes? Outrageous.

[–]GoMrJoe 0 points1 point ago

Heh. I actually have a 13 year old cousin on Facebook who has over 2,000 Facebook friends. Apparently she has a large social circle in asia.

Personally, I only add people I might actually want to talk to at some point. I have ~80 friends, when someone who I barely know posts annoying shit I defriend them. It's something I'd recommend doing since it makes browsing Facebook A LOT less tedious.

[–]TheSexyWaffle35 1 point2 points ago
