There are two ways these amethyst/agate masses form, one is by way of a vug, a gas bubble cavity in solidified lava. Superheated very high pressure water enters and dissolved silica precipitates out lining the cavity. As the solution cools/becomes less saturated crystals nucleate and grow. Geodes form in pearlite, they actually grow as a spherulite and some form a cavity inside in which the same silica precipitation/crystallization process takes place. I'm of the opinion this is from a vug.

I work at the Smithsonian Natural History museum and met the anthropologist that studied the crystal skulls that were apparently "pre-columbian" artifacts.

I would be interested in knowing what ethnicity this and other skulls where designed after, or which ethnicity the most resemble.

Now that I think about it, its probably like taxidermy where they just use a generic model rather than going that much into the finer details.
