Ahh, thanks. I thought it might've been this one over Wisconsin from 2010. Was fortunate enough to be on a bike riding towards the section of sky where it appeared and got a front-row view. Couldn't believe what I was seeing. Easily one of the coolest moments of my life.

I like how at 0:19 they circle it in red as if you can only just make out the object five times brighter than the moon streaking across the night sky at 14km/s.

I would have been shitting bricks. At first, because OH FUCK IM GONNA DIE, then because that was the coolest thing I've ever seen!

It's a good thing they circled the meteor in that video, I don't think I would have seen it otherwise.

Why did it flash at the end?

[–]Tjoeller 16 points17 points ago

Probably the meteorite breaking apart giving it a larger surface area to burn from heat generated by the air being compressed in front of it. Aparently they found over 1000 pieces of it afterwards.

Edit: Changed "friction" to "...heat generated by the air being compressed in front of it"

[–]Conquerd 4 points5 points ago

I thought that was caused by the compression of the air in front of it, not friction...

[–]Tjoeller 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I was misremembering.

[–]sweetgreggo 7 points8 points ago

Blowed up!

[–]kernco -2 points-1 points ago

It reached a denser layer of the atmosphere, so it flared for a second from the increased friction before it was slowed down.

I got to see this meteorite in person. I was in central alberta and it was extremely bright. The meteorite pieces were found in saskatchewan. Edit: Yay, cakeday!

It's amazing to me that just for a frame there, it's like day time. As if it was always day time, you just couldn't see it because it was night time. I know that's silly...

[–]crazyfool92 0 points1 point ago

Yea it was that bright it turned the sky blue.

So, what super powers did you get? Something useful I hope.

[–]GrouchyMcSurly 28 points29 points ago

He has become Gryphonlord, with power to rule and command over all gryphons, big and small. Unfortunately no gryphons exist.

[–]CrazyEddie041 22 points23 points ago

Still better than Aquaman.

[–]Corey24 7 points8 points ago

You'd think so until Aquaman rides out of the ocean on Cthulhu

[–]alonweiss -2 points-1 points ago

I hate when that happens!

[–]gryphonlord[S] 1 point2 points ago

Sadly I never saw this, someone on r/wtf posted it and I though you guys would love it

[–]Fir3start3r -1 points0 points ago

...magnetic rectum...

[–]Morass 0 points1 point ago

I saw the best one Ive ever seen a few nights ago, not quite that bright, but it clearly broke into two large pieces and was really impressive.

Beautiful bolide. Old, but beautiful.

[–]theRube 0 points1 point ago

I saw something like this just recently in Massachusetts, but about half the size and a way shorter flash at the end. My first thought was that it was a bomb

[–]pon_de_rring -1 points0 points ago

that's no meteor....that's goku finally landing on earth

[–]therandomizer 0 points1 point ago

Despite what they say in r/wtf, I would have loved to have seen this in person.

[–]Scott-IM 0 points1 point ago

I hope whoever recorded that went to the crash site and took a look.

[–]anonpurpose 0 points1 point ago

did you find it and sleep on it and become vandall savage? no?...opportunity wasted.

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point ago

Awesome. I saw one like that while driving across northern Nevada a few years ago... It's 2 or 3 am in the middle of nowhere, completely pitch black around us, and then the sky just completely lights up everything like its daylight for a second. A bit confused and tired from driving across multiple states, I turn to my friend and say "uhh, did that just happen?"

[–]mcdavie 0 points1 point ago

It was as bright as the sun for split second there!
