First time I've seen tilt-shift used on a landscape scene! This is gorgeous!

[–]Peregrine7 11 points12 points ago

It's a false tiltshift, but it looks so damn good!

Thats very odd, I didn't even realize it was TS'd before you mentioned it, I simply thought "Damn, it's pretty far away." I suppose actually knowing the scale of the thing helps, as well as seeing it.

Please, what is "tilt shift"?

[–]Disco_Tardis 2 points3 points ago

This isn't the most technical definition, but it gives the subject of a photograph the appearance of being almost miniature or toylike as if it were a piece in a diorama.

Thanks. That tells me what it does, but not what it is. But that's okay; my curiosity is piqued -- I'll look it up.

Its the use of blur effects on any image to give the illusion that the subject matter of a certain photo is/are miniaturized. Its usually used on single small things like cars or buildings, sometimes whole cityscapes.

Usually you blur everything but the subject of the photo and it gives that feeling that you're looking at a pictures of miniature toys or something instead of actual real objects. I have never seen it used on a natural landscape before, but it clearly looks incredible.

Thanks, this is really helpful!

Google is rather useful.

[–]brandnewtothegame 3 points4 points ago

I know. But it's not as friendly as you!

[–]Disco_Tardis 0 points1 point ago

Haha, but it does have those delightful animations!

A great review of what tilt - shift lenses offer to the photographer can be found here

[–]brandnewtothegame 1 point2 points ago

Thank you -- will definitely take a look.

Tilt shift is a style of photography that uses certain techniques (I'm not fully aware of them) that makes objects look like miniatures or fakes. For examples, see: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/11/16/beautiful-examples-of-tilt-shift-photography/

All of those were real photographs of real full sized places and things, but they look like movie sets and toys.

Thanks, this is terrific!

Clearly gives the impression that some stars are further away than others, which they are, by orders of magnitude.

[–]Berrulium 7 points8 points ago

One of the best uses of this technique I've seen.

For those that wanted to use it as a background like me...

ridiculously photogenic mountain

[–]bluegrm 7 points8 points ago

would love to see the original photograph as I'm sure it was amazing.. just not that keen on the tilt-shift type of effect that's been added

[–]jsims281 -1 points0 points ago

It might have been taken with a tilt shift lens, rather than added in photoshop.

[–]getspent 2 points3 points ago

wooaahhh, gorgeous!!

edit: def my background, thank you very much for sharing!

[–]novastorm17 2 points3 points ago

Wow. That is beautiful

[–]FaerieStories 2 points3 points ago

God I want to go back there, the area around the Matterhorn on the Swiss side is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

[–]IcarusByNight 0 points1 point ago

Mmmm and the food

[–]LostinMHJ 4 points5 points ago

I love how this photo uses the sky to make the Matterhorn look small.

[–]mjk182 2 points3 points ago

Is it not the greatest mountain on Earth?

[–]g0dspeed0ne 2 points3 points ago

i dreamed of this picture 4 years ago, thank you for posting

[–]KindaSilent 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that is seriously breathtaking.

[–]hondrich 0 points1 point ago

This looks so unreal. I wonder how many hours of editing on the computer was involved.

[–]NiceGuyMike 0 points1 point ago

Gorgeous pic, but the stars in the foreground/background don't look right and is freaking me out a tad. Can someone explain this technique?

[–]paul2520 0 points1 point ago

Is that where Lorenzo von Matterhorn hails from?

[–]delaboots 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that the Paramount Pictures mountain?

[–]Canaan-Aus 0 points1 point ago

The paramount mountain is fictional

[–]delaboots 1 point2 points ago

Dammit.

[–]jasonracey 0 points1 point ago
