If /r/reactiongifs is where the gif perfectly fits the description, the shitty version should just be the incorrect reaction to the title. I subscribed after I saw the breaking bad "doctor tells me I have an STD: you're god damn right!" gif. The reaction ought to be shitty, not the gif itself.

There's no need to get too specific. It could work in a few different ways.

r/reactiongifs does deal with potential suitable reactions in given situations, so here would be a place for inappropriate reactions.

r/reactiongifs seldom provides literal or actual reactions to things. They are, of course, almost always exaggerated, himourous, silly etc. That's why I think here you can also flip that on its head by choosing gifs and making the situations/descriptions ridiculous and/or literal instead. It's a different kind of opposite.

Well said. It's pretty silly, a little sad, and frankly ironic for people to get so up-in-arms over what is or is not a "good" shitty reaction gif.

I'd like to point out that this sub was created by NigWantsKFC and who better to define what the sub was made for? Here, here, and here are the first submissions with which he seeded it. Seems to me that if those were submitted today, a lot of the newer subscribers who think they have the perfect conception of what the content here should be would downvote them and complain that they're too literal. But that's kind of the point. /r/shittyreactiongifs surely spawned as an ironic reaction to some of the terrible submissions in /r/reactiongifs . One thing that makes a /r/reactiongifs post shitty is when the title is too literal. So here, sometimes the over-literalness is the joke. Exhibit A. Gonna tell me that's not funny? Check out its upvote/downvote ratio.

Well put.

Those original ones are funny. I feel the over-literal explanation is funnier than an inappropriate response anyway. Not that it should matter.

I've always taken r/shittyreactiongifs to be gifs that make absolutely no sense in regards to the given description unless you make a really out-there connection.

It's both:

shitty reaction gifs

shitty reaction gifs

I upvote if either of those criteria are met. Or if it's funny. Actually, I just upvote if it's funny.

tldr - I am the cancer destroying shittyreactiongifs

This post captures the essence of what the shitty reaction gif should be. It's not a description of a ridiculous gif or a gif that makes no sense in context. It's a GIF that makes just enough sense to be relevant, but still shouldn't be used to describe the reaction. Hence shitty reaction gif.

Can we not have something like that in the sidebar? I feel like the lack of any sort of explanation there would be a big contributor to the number of bad submissions.

Good on you, mate.

OP is a shiny red ball.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

No, OP is the dog. His effort at bringing the ball under submission is ineffective and results in unmitigated failure that may be humorous to onlookers.

Thus OP's gif is not a shitty reaction gif, and I must downvote.

Maybe he was... flipping out.

Puns are shitty. Therefore the gif belongs here.

The way I've always viewed it was, I would look at a normal reaction gif, and find an alternate joke in it somewhere. The gif itself wouldn't be shitty, but the set of circumstances surrounding it would be. And either way, if the title and gif are paired well and cause a laugh, I think they've done a good job.

These posts are always so annoying:

"Everyone's posting and enjoying gifs while I'm sitting here really understanding the deep nature of /r/shittyreactiongifs."

Every restaurant should just sell hamburgers, because hamburgers are good
