      To disagree is one thing, but what they do is so condescending and abusing to other people. Somehow they can still be considered a "church", not to mention their actions result in victims.       You really don't understand free speech do you? Free speech gives people a right to say things that most would find atrocious. It doesn't only give people the right to say things that you approve of.

      To me the necessity for people to have the right to say anything they want is self evident. But I am getting a lot of replies from people who claim to be supporting America yet seem to be adamantly opposed to the first amendment.

      So here is my best explanation for why free speech is necessary. First of all, if you want to consider your country free people should be able to say what they want without repercussion. If you are limiting what people are allowed to say that is clearly taking away one of the most basic of freedoms. But moreover, if the government picks and chooses what is allowed to be said what if tomorrow they decide that people aren't allowed to show their opposition towards the war? Or they aren't allowed to say anything negative regarding politicians? The whole system falls apart. If people can't say what they want then the voters are only allowed to hear one point of view and democracy seizes to exist. So we let the WBC go say their arguments and guess what, almost not a single person has agreed with them or joined them.

          Here is another lawsuit, although it doesn't say who sued who.

          Every court rules in favor of WBC because of the First Amendment. If they ruled against them, it would set a precedent for denying Freedom of Speech, or more likely be brought to the Supreme Court of the United States.

          Edit: Here is one case where they lost a legal battle, but that was due to a Missouri law that bans protests within 300 feet of a funeral.

              I hate to sound stereotypical, but the proper way to "fight" this would be to go to these funerals where they are protesting and give support to the families there. Show them that you care for them and their lost one. Resorting to the same level of hate doesn't do anything to stop them. By supporting the families, you nullify their effects.

              You, me or anyone outside the family's circle are absolute strangers on that day. They are in a total state of shock. Random people walking up to them and saying, "we are with you" would mean literally nothing to them.

              Just similarly, WB assholes are absolute strangers. However, in light of the gravity of the situation, their negative views will only serve to compound the family's grief. Really, at that point it'll only spiral downwards.

              IMO the only way to fight them is to incapacitate them and ensure that they cannot even make it to the funeral in the first place. I like that idea of how they had slashed tires/parked cars around their van so that they could not get out/etc. more than some feel-good hypothetical group hug one would want to give to the family.

                Well, that's bullshit. It's like giving them ammunition. They are saying that homosexuality is an abomination, and your suggestion is to send them pictures that are basically underlining their claims. Doesn't make any sense.

                I'm sure a lot of you have seen that picture when those Christians in (I think it was) Egypt surrounded and protected praying muslims. Why not do something like that. You know, get together and block those idiots from getting to the funeral site...

                We need to find an item that is inexpensive to ship, is legal, and costs a fortune to dispose of, relative to its size. Lead paint chips and asbestos are probably illegal, but there is probably something out there that meets these specifications.
