I think NFL rules require that you cross the touchdown line.

Touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent’s goal line, provided it is not a touchback.

Then how does a pass into the end zone work? When the ball is in the air it is not in anyone's possession.

Well, you're not totally wrong. The ball still needs to cross the line, and you need possession of it in the endzone subsequently. So the ball crossing the line is still relevant.

Maybe they consider a passed ball still in possession of the quarterback until it either is caught, is intercepted, or hits the ground. Just guessing.

although, with the weight and speed of the ball, he'd probably break his fingers a lot if he tried to catch by just using his adhesive touch.
