Dont start your shopping until Dec24th. The black friday type panicked crowds will help you shop with clarity and efficiency.

[–]Zawndi 7 points8 points ago

Maybe the OP is Scandinavian and in wich case celebrates christmas on the 24th!

At that point, it's pretty much whatever's left that's not horrible

[–]shiny_fsh 1 point2 points ago

Never try to drive anywhere on Christmas eve D: Even a few days before is pretty bad.

[–]PubeSchool 52 points53 points ago

But seriously what do I get the females in my life? (gf, sister, mom)

[–]3lvy 24 points25 points ago

Lava lamps.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 31 points32 points ago

Bitches love lava lamps.

[–]Whoopah 0 points1 point ago

That place is just full of desperate people begging for help and no helpers.

Trust me, I am one of those desperate people.

[–]Elon-Musk 0 points1 point ago

You haven't posted anything ಠ_ಠ

You lied to me...

[–]Whoopah 0 points1 point ago

I'm desperate, but I'm not begging for help. I agree that it was a bit misleading. I've been to the subreddit tons of times to see if anyone was giving out good advice.

[–]YourJ 9 points10 points ago

Female here. I suggest books, handbags, clothing, something for the bedroom, something for the car, accessories, home appliances, homemade photo albums (mothers freaking love this!), cosmetics set and/or hair styling products (sister?). If worse comes to worse you can get them a voucher for some spa treatment.

[–]Ranger_X 3 points4 points ago

I can imagine. "Here. I got you this coffee pot. Enjoy."

[–]enterfunnynamehere 0 points1 point ago

Or "Here, accept these cleaning supplies. I know you love to clean."

[–]hihelloneighboroonie 5 points6 points ago

I disagree. Every time I've ever gotten clothes from someone that wasn't something that I specifically pointed out, it either didn't fit or was completely not in my taste. Don't give clothes other than cozy pjs.

[–]YourJ 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that applies to all women. I don't personally know the guys relatives but figured I may as well give him the idea.

[–]BigSugarJohnson 2 points3 points ago

I have no idea how to pick more than half the things on this list.

[–]YourJ 0 points1 point ago

Google. Plus most of the time sales clerks are likely to be helpful and may even suggest a few things. In regards to shops, well they're pretty self explanatory, just go down to your local mall or shopping center.

[–]hbdgas 0 points1 point ago

Surely I would not be able to pick out handbags, clothing, or cosmetics/hair products. But I don't even know what some of the other stuff would be. "Something for the bedroom"? "Accessories"?

[–]YourJ 0 points1 point ago

Something for the bedroom = Ikea

Accessories = Jewellery

Why wouldn't you be able to pick out handbags, clothing, or cosmetics/hair products?

[–]hbdgas 1 point2 points ago

Because I don't know what's "good"/"stylish" in any of those categories.

[–]Jaded_Jackalope 11 points12 points ago

The best gift I ever gave a girlfriend, in terms of the sheer awesomeness of her reaction, was seasons 1 & 2 of HBO's Rome.

[–]MarcvsAgrippa 5 points6 points ago

Are there any shows like Rome? I've been itching for one.

[–]achemicaldream 8 points9 points ago

Game of Thrones

[–]KimJong-FUN 7 points8 points ago

3 months, 10 days, man.

[–]Detry 0 points1 point ago

That's all? I was expecting a longer wait, this is good news.

[–]FlyingPasta -3 points-2 points ago

Jesus dies.

[–]Jaded_Jackalope 1 point2 points ago

I've yet to see a period piece show like that actually be as accurate in terms of everyday details.

Deadwood might come close, but I know a lot less about the post-Civil War western frontier than I do about 1st century Rome.

[–]IncidentOn57thStreet 0 points1 point ago

Second Deadwood

[–]Jaded_Jackalope 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. Regardless of historical accuracy, Deadwood is a fantastic show.

[–]MarcvsAgrippa 0 points1 point ago

Didn't Deadwood end somewhat abruptly?

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 0 points1 point ago

Have you seen The Tudors or Spartacus?

[–]FriendllyGuy 3 points4 points ago

If you haven't seen Spartacus, just watched the first season!

[–]carnifex2005 2 points3 points ago

Season One of Spartacus was great but the first 2 episodes were crap. It was easily the best example of a series getting better by each episode as it went along until one of the greatest season finales in TV I've ever seen.

[–]JesusRollerBlading 1 point2 points ago

I watch it for the plot. Just wrapped Season 2, as well as the Prequel.

My description: Spartacus is 40% graphic violence, 40% gratuitous nudity, and 20% history. I highly recommend it.

[–]FriendllyGuy 0 points1 point ago

I like the prequel but season 2 just wants the same:( I think it was the actor change.

[–]JesusRollerBlading 0 points1 point ago

I thought Liam did a nice job subbing for the late Andy, but the writing for S2 largely sucked. It was a nice payoff in the end though, but I will miss a certain princess all the same. :(

[–]MarcvsAgrippa 1 point2 points ago

The Tudors, yes. But after the first 2 seasons I just lost the will to watch, which is disappointing. I'll try Spartacus next. As an aside, I kept thinking of Isaac in Dexter as Pullo and it was distracting.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 0 points1 point ago

Spartacus isn't totally historically accurate but it's a ton of fun.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 0 points1 point ago

I think most women wouldn't think this is a fantastic gift.

[–]hihelloneighboroonie 4 points5 points ago

Except I bet the reason it was a fantastic gift was because he listened to her and took into account her interests and put thought into it and got something that she actually wanted. Which does make for a fantastic gift.

[–]hihelloneighboroonie -1 points0 points ago

And yet gets all the pussy. Funny thing, that

[–]Not_Dennis_Quaid 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand the downvotes, he's right, it doesn't make it a good gift for most women.

[–]Jaded_Jackalope 1 point2 points ago

I suppose it's simpler when you're a history major shopping for a history major.

[–]Very_High_Templar 1 point2 points ago

How accurate is Rome? I want to believe I learned some things about Roman culture

[–]Jaded_Jackalope 1 point2 points ago

A lot of little things. The costumes were typically fairly accurate. The prevalence of graffiti. The religious rituals. The announcer at the forum.

Mind you, this is all 'as far as we know.' And despite my interest in it, first century Rome was not my area of focus.

[–]charliewarner 1 point2 points ago

It was incredibly accurate as far as you know.

[–]No_Source_Provided 1 point2 points ago

History Major here- Rome actually blew my mind with how much of it reflected what we get taught and how well they managed to keep it entertaining.

In terms of the politics and what you see of the city of Rome, pretty much everything is backed up by history.

[–]Pweaches 1 point2 points ago

The ones in my life tell me exactly what to get them.

[–]chickencluck 2 points3 points ago

It depends entirely on what they are into. I was looking at those lists that websites like to post, "Best Gifts that She Really Wants" or "Top Gifts for Her this Season." They are all shit...in my opinion anyway. Those people should be fired.

[–]The_Landlady 4 points5 points ago

Every woman loves to get a manicure/pedicure. Why not get them a gift certificate to a local place?

[–]graduality 4 points5 points ago

Bath soaps, tea, candles, chocolates, gift cards to their favorite clothing stores... and so on. Maybe lingerie for your gf.

Edit:

Gentlemen, I have been informed of a general dislike of gifted candles or bath soaps. Those items should only be given when specific wishes for such have been expressed.

[–]ras344 4 points5 points ago

Maybe lingerie for your gf.

Also for your mom and sister.

[–]upsilon905 1 point2 points ago

We were just wrestling i swear

[–]imnotabus 1 point2 points ago

Say "hi" to your mother for me

[–]metrognome64 5 points6 points ago

No! No Candles! You know what giving a candle says? It says, "I have no idea what to get you, so I bought you this stupid candle." NO CANDLES!

[–]SirNoName 1 point2 points ago

Me, my sister, and my mom just spent a half hour buying candles for people today.
Whoops.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Whoopah 0 points1 point ago

He's an idiot, you say, and then make a sweeping generalization.

[–]graduality 0 points1 point ago

What exactly is wrong with giving someone a gift even when you have no idea what that person actually wished for?

[–]birchesaintshit 0 points1 point ago

I like candles..

[–]DIYnoob 1 point2 points ago

On behalf of all women... NO candles or soap!!! Unless there is a very specific one that you know she wanted, please avoid these. We spend out entire lives receiving and either storing or regifting them. Thank you.

[–]cnostrand 6 points7 points ago

Gift cards. I had a friend complain that I had gotten her a gift card instead of a real gift, to which I responded "Well you didn't tell me anything you actually wanted, so this is just a ballpark gift."

Shut her the hell up.

[–]WanderingStoner 5 points6 points ago

Giving gift cards is like giving cash to a lot of people, including everyone in my family. It's not acceptable.

[–]Misentro 38 points39 points ago

Giving gift cards is like giving cash

I totally agree, that why they're so usefu-

It's not acceptable.

wait what

[–]WanderingStoner 15 points16 points ago

I'm totally with you on this one! cash > gift cards > stuff I don't want

but it's not about me, it's about the person receiving the gift.

[–]03Titanium 8 points9 points ago

It's so odd because it's the time of year for gift giving. You give a gift to make someone happy. If someone is happy when you give them cash then what makes it any different. If you think cash is unacceptable are you putting yourself before the recipient. When did Christmas become giving people your shipping lists. Why am I typing this. When am I going to go buy those gifts for my parents.

[–]SirReginaldPennycorn 4 points5 points ago

Why are you forgetting question marks.

[–]Whoopah 1 point2 points ago

Do you think that's the worst grammar mistake anyone can make.

[–]SirReginaldPennycorn 1 point2 points ago

I dont know do you

[–]cortexstack 6 points7 points ago

I totally agree, and I'd feel bad doing it myself, but every time someone's given me a gift card I've ended up with something awesome.

[–]kraw 6 points7 points ago

If I don't know the person well enough I get a gift card. If someone doesn't know me well and gives me a gift card I don't mind because I genuinely know they didn't have a clue what to get me. If someone I knew very well got me a gift card I didn't ask for, I would be sad.

[–]Styvorama 2 points3 points ago

I think it depends on the situation. My wife and I love putting thought into our gifts, but this year we got my sister and her gf visa gift cards because they just got a new place and need stuff.

[–]shiny_fsh 1 point2 points ago

I like it when couples are the same gender because then you don't have to worry about pronouns. It's just "her girlfriend" both ways around instead of worry about messing up the genders in "his girlfriend" and "her boyfriend".

Edit: I know your comment was mostly about gifts but I was thinking about this after reading the replies below.

[–]Suzy_Sweetheart 2 points3 points ago

I got my parents a 125 dollar gift card to a nice steakhouse, cuz they could really use a night out somewhere fancy. Aint nuthin wrong with gift cards!!!!

[–]tyrghast 2 points3 points ago

I make it known that unless you know what you want, you're getting a gift card. I ain't got time to play games.

[–]_Particle_Man_ 2 points3 points ago

Cash is the BEST gift because you got the person exactly what they wanted when they spend it.

[–]ILiveInNYC 3 points4 points ago

Cats.

[–]Jioo 1 point2 points ago

I asked a female friend earlier for the same reason.

Apparently you can't go wrong with parfume/candles/scarves.

edit: Now I have to think about what to gift my friend as thanks for the advice..

[–]Ultimatelegs 0 points1 point ago

For years I received candles as gifts and they sat unused and under appreciated. Now I live in a rental with no bathroom fan and have used up almost all of my gift candles. Looking back - I'm glad to have gotten them.

[–]Ohang -1 points0 points ago

Ew. I hate candles and perfume. They smell yuck.

[–]a7rcana 1 point2 points ago

Giftcards. Good women places are Forever21, Sephora, Victoria's Secret. Also generic itunes works. Mani/Pedi giftcard. Massage/spa. For stocking stuffers chocolates, cookies, tea, wine, cool glassware, a cute decoration for her shelf (I got my sister-in-law a cute elephant decoration). An album she's meaning to buy or a movie she loves is also good.

[–]u83rmensch 0 points1 point ago

picture frames.

bitches love picture frames.

good idea to put something of value in those frames too

[–]Suzy_Sweetheart 0 points1 point ago

Jewelry, gift card, gift card

[–]mobymoes 1 point2 points ago

For the love of God, just ask them. If they can't think of anything concrete, ask them where they like to shop and get them a gift card to those places. Don't assume they just want perfume, bath stuff, or any specific piece of media--there's no guarantee that they would like what you picked out, any more than you would like it if they bought you bath stuff, cologne or a particular movie or game.

And don't buy something you want, under the guise of giving it to them and then using it all the time yourself. Buying something you want is almost as bad as not buying anything and claiming you ran out of time or couldn't think of anything.

If you really can't think of a "thing", then buy a gift card to a restaurant you both like or always wanted to try, and take them out. Quality time together is also a good gift.

[–]Jacosion -1 points0 points ago

You can't go wrong with jewelry. Walmart has pretty good stuff in birth stones.

[–]dvsbastard 0 points1 point ago

I know it is easier said than done as it requires some forethought, but pay attention on a previous shopping outing and you will end up with a lot of ideas. Also a tactic that I have used in the past is to engage in conversation while they are reading any of their favourite magazines, as they may point out something they like in their too.

To be fair, I still use the cash / giftcard approach sometimes with a printed "One ticket to go shopping!" because sometimes just the act of shopping for something is just as enjoyable as actually owning something (for some women at least) - and I always add a small something thoughtful (even if it is a novelty gift), because everyone likes to unwrap things! :P

[–]brodie21 1 point2 points ago

Ask your sister what to get for your mom and your mom what to get for your sister.

Get your GF a pearl necklace.

[–]tangelophile 0 points1 point ago

Girls are easy to buy for. Jewelry, perfume, or gift vouchers for clothes stores, hair or nail salons. Easy :)

[–]kraw 0 points1 point ago

That's lazy though. Think about what they like and put that into amazon. Browse. Find gift, done.

[–]tangelophile 0 points1 point ago

Yeh I know. I make my own gift for my family, but not everyone is comfortable with that suggestion.

Why not finding nice family photos and putting them on canvas or a really nice frame ?? I know it may seem lazy, but there isn't much time left :)

[–]kraw 0 points1 point ago

I wish I'd had the time to do something like that!

[–]tangelophile 0 points1 point ago

Seriously It takes me ages. At least a few months for make something for everyone, but that's just me. Doesn't have to take that long. It's the thought that counts, and the effort you put into it always makes the best gifts.

[–]Very_High_Templar 0 points1 point ago

You forgot the part where you have to have already done that weeks ago to get it shipped reasonably soon for Christmas..

[–]Malaryush 0 points1 point ago

Depends on their age too though.

[–]DulceLady 4 points5 points ago

Girls between 10 and death want these gifts.

[–]Malaryush 0 points1 point ago

As a 24 year old girl I would not like these...nor would all the other woman I am associated with. It depends completely on the woman and her interests. The only one that is a maybe is gift vouchers for clothes stores.

[–]berrywelcome 0 points1 point ago

You and no one you associate with like to smell or look nice?

[–]Malaryush -2 points-1 points ago

Most women already have an abundant supply of perfume which mostly goes unused. Jewelry is nice but people can be really picky. Hair & nail salon vouchers? No thanks, not girly enough. There are probably 1000 others things I would prefer like movie ticket vouchers instead. Clothing store vouchers- sure. Like I said, depends on the woman.

[–]MstrKief -3 points-2 points ago

Candles. Can't go wrong with a candle. Unless you're smell-blind and can't pick a good scent.

[–]Krickette 4 points5 points ago

no. do not do this. I have so many candles and bathwash and lotion and all that other generic girl gift crap. It's pretty lame. I'd rather get a fancy cupcake, or a pedicure, or a massage, or jewelry, or...anything.

[–]MstrKief -1 points0 points ago

Well you suck then. My mom and sister love candles, and not in the sense that they're saying they love them, they burn them all the time.

[–]chobi83 0 points1 point ago

So...a gift card to a spa would be a good idea?

[–]Krickette 0 points1 point ago

Yup! I mean it's always nice to get something more personal, but if you're cluelews on what to get to the point of buying something generic, can't go wrong with a spa day!

[–]Arronwy 0 points1 point ago

A puppy.

[–]Khasidon1 15 points16 points ago

I have a cousin who, on Christmas Eve night, asked me in confidence if the gas station was open.

You're ahead of the curve there, kid.

[–]Tameee 6 points7 points ago

Am I the only prepared for this?

[–]FlyingPasta 2 points3 points ago

You are the Santa this world needs.

[–]Navevan 0 points1 point ago

Nope, all of my gifts are just waiting to be wrapped.

[–]lululaplap 7 points8 points ago

I thought I had another week till Christmas... nope, 5 days to get the whole family gifts.

[–]jimminyjojo 51 points52 points ago

You should get the hole family a ladder so they can get out.

Lol....hole.

[–]sgtkcourt 5 points6 points ago

[–]wcgaming 5 points6 points ago

That's what Saturday Monday is for.

[–]sgtkcourt 1 point2 points ago

Haha I have to work Monday but yes, lunch time will most likely be spent buying the final gifts.

[–]i-rawr123 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. That's when I'm going.

[–]GoodGuyAlex 0 points1 point ago

That's my plan. However, that massive snowstorm is supposed to be heading here, and Erie, PA drivers are retarded when it comes to driving in the snow. I like to think I'm a perfectly good driver; it's the other people that are dangerous.

[–]rhythmsticks 3 points4 points ago

had this conversation with my dad last night

Here's some candies, batteries (maybe... do kids still use batteries?), and video games kids.

Merry best xmas ever.

Kids are usually easy the easiest to shop for because they'll tell you exactly what they want.

[–]shiny_fsh 0 points1 point ago

The only thing I use batteries for is xbox controllers. But they are rechargeable so I won't need more. My advice is only to buy batteries if the toys you are giving need them.

[–]DulceLady 2 points3 points ago

I'll help you. The key to a good/safe holiday gift is one that comes in a variety pack/gift set. If you have an Ulta or Sephora in your area, get a gift set of something that might suit her. They have holiday sets of nail polishes, eye sets, lip glosses, perfume, etc. They vary in all price ranges. Victoria Secret also has really amazing perfume gift sets. Women love these! But make sure the set matches something she is already into. If she has a ton of old lip glosses lying around, she would probably love a new set. There's also a little slide of heaven called Lush. They are found in some Macy's if you don't have a stand alone store near you. They have gift sets of specialty bath items. My husband loves when I use these and I secretly know he uses them in the shower, too. He can't fool me. Bath and Body Works is also safe. Between candles and lotions and sprays.. you can't go wrong. B&BW will also trade in their products for other scents no questions asked so if you got a scent she doesn't love she can exchange guilt-free. Gift sets can be bad or cheesy. But if they contain a variety of high quality brand name products at a good price, it's a win for both of you. Fail-proof gift is a picture of you two in a nice frame. Kohl's and Michael's always have sales on nice frames. Go home and send a photo that fits the frame to an 1 hour photo place. (CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, Costco, etc.) Hide a cute note behind the picture so years from now she'll discover it and you'll be rewarded now and later. ;) I, of course, am covering the last minute gifts for the girly women in your life.. If you're dating a nerdy girl you should already know what she wants. Good luck men!

My boyfriend has been super stressed out with work recently and he looked so sad when he told me he felt bad because I got a bunch of gifts for him but he hardly got anything for me.

I told him that one, it didn't matter and two, if he had planned to get me something and ran out of time, he could just print out a picture of it and buy it later.
