I see you've found a flaw in their otherwise rational and educated observation.

[–]mybaby51 14 points15 points ago

You literally stole this from a joke on the front page earlier

[–]ShamanPipeGoesKABLAM 5 points6 points ago

Welcome to reddit.

[–]mybaby51 0 points1 point ago

This is the first time I have seen an outright repost, blows my mind a little

[–]ShamanPipeGoesKABLAM 0 points1 point ago

Better put a cap on when surfing reddit because your mind is going to explode.

[–]Bluish4Youish 28 points29 points ago

this joke is stale

[–]Syprs 5 points6 points ago

I would think it is reasonable to assume astronomy would play a significant part in any end of the world predictions for ancient civilizations. The solstice will be december 21, 11:12 UTC.

Gangnam style might also hit 1B views around the same time...

[–]jenbabekitty 16 points17 points ago

Why the fuck would Mayans consider time zones?

[–]powertyisfromgun 22 points23 points ago

They wouldn't. They would only care about the time it was where they were. Which for us, in this age of time zones, is CST zone (-6)

[–]Hominid77777 10 points11 points ago

The question is, did Mayans consider the day to start and end at midnight? In Judaism, for example, the day starts at sunset.

[–]eferoth 0 points1 point ago

Well, thanks for that little tidbit. Didn't know. Fascinating.

[–]fugwyfe42 6 points7 points ago

Aliens. Ancient civilisation. No other explanation

[–]TheN0zZ13 12 points13 points ago

Why the fuck does any one care the world will not end regardless

[–]iScreme 2 points3 points ago

I'LL REMEMBER YOU!

[–]Japanistan 0 points1 point ago

I WANT TO BELIEVE.

[–]pridetwo 0 points1 point ago

I now have you tagged as "believes the world won't end"

We'll see who has the last laugh!

[–]petrichorprince -1 points0 points ago

i now have you tagged as "nutjob that believes the world will end" we'll see who has the last laugh c:

[–]pridetwo 0 points1 point ago

Okay, if I win then you have to wear a shirt of my choosing for a whole week, and if you win then I'll start wearing pants.

[–]petrichorprince 0 points1 point ago

okay!

[–]ph1012 -1 points0 points ago

Hah. Pretty sure he was just making a joke. 'cause if the world ends, his RES tag won't matter..

[–]absurdlyobfuscated 8 points9 points ago

Why the fuck

Do people think rolling over b'ak'tuns means the apocalypse?

[–]fretsurfer12 1 point2 points ago

Because the Mayans predicted a big event happening at the end of the 13th Baktun.

And that end is tomorrow.

...but idk what the big event is, if there will be one at all

[–]Padillatronator 3 points4 points ago

I know what it must be! A......... New iPod coming out!

[–]mestex 1 point2 points ago

A ceremony of some sort. So said a programme I watched earlier.

[–]midway12 2 points3 points ago

the big event is the return of the Mayans, duh. they're coming back with their alien friends to finish the calendar.

[–]JaedenStormes 0 points1 point ago

Must be a bitch, the world ending on your cake day. Better hurry and get karma now!

[–]alejo699 1 point2 points ago

Why are we even talking about any of this?

[–]occupythekitchen 0 points1 point ago

Well I just saw a serpent come out of the moon, so I still have my finger crossed for the end of times.

[–]hiezenberg1599 0 points1 point ago

Ive been saying this all day!!

[–]SmithBeast 0 points1 point ago

Why would they use yours

[–]sourd20ag 1 point2 points ago

They were I am our time zone faggot!

[–]sherincal -1 points0 points ago

Weren't Mayans in the southern murica? Then it kinda would make sense?

[–]QuasarsRcool 0 points1 point ago

There was a Picard meme like this on the front page literally earlier today. FUCK YOU, OP.

[–]SonOfTK421 1 point2 points ago

It is time to stop now, people.

Tits and cats. What's so fucking hard to understand? Tits and cats. Especially if the world is ending. Now's the time to take stock of the things you value, like tits and cats, not to bitch and moan about losing them.

I say again, tits and cats.

This post would be more awesome if I were gay and hated cats.

[–]Hayarotle 0 points1 point ago

Same goes for all those "didn't account for leap years" and "the world is gonna end at midnight" comments. It's supposed to happen on winter/summer solstice, and not be the end of the world

[–]BurningKarma 0 points1 point ago

FFS, this was already on the frontpage today.

[–]takenwithapotato 0 points1 point ago

Why the fuck would the Mayans have anything to do with how the world ended?

[–]fatalblur 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't they use their own timezone? so...central? Also, I heard somewhere it's supposed to happen at 6:11 am, not exactly at midnight.

[–]sithlordjake 0 points1 point ago

The time zones we know now didn't exist at the time of the Mayans........ so your point is also flawed

[–]Zooperman 0 points1 point ago

because maybe they are from over here?

[–]ReeseJ7 0 points1 point ago

They didn't even have time zones

[–]SilliusBuns 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact, the people are the Maya, not the Mayans. Mayan is an adjective only.

TheMoreYouKnow

[–]CeiIingCat 0 points1 point ago

...is anyone still out there?

[–]villain717 -3 points-2 points ago

I have already commented on like 5 of the posts you are referring to, the Mayans used GMT so all these people posting about there timezones are fools who apparently don't know how to use google.

[–]mestex 3 points4 points ago

No they didn't. They used the sun rise and sun set from where they lived (Peru?)

[–]Bresdin -2 points-1 points ago

Except... Time zones technically speaking weren't invented yet. That wasn't until faster travel with things like trains.

[–]Ellimis 1 point2 points ago

It's like you're completely missing the point or something

[–]pax27 -3 points-2 points ago

The Mayans didn't even count on the leap years and all those added days. I believe their 21 of December was actually somewhere in September, if you count the days.

[–]pridetwo 2 points3 points ago

They didn't have a 21 of December... Their calendar is not the 12 month gregorian calendar we use today for obvious reasons.

[–]pax27 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty clear to me, but thanks for clearing that up. I guess.

[–]OCTynes413 1 point2 points ago

no. The mayan calander was discovered and converted. They did it day by day, and after converted (after the creation of leap years) it ended on 21/12/12 (aka 12/21/12)

[–]pax27 0 points1 point ago

Ah, I stand corrected. I should have learned by now not to take things I read on the internet as fact. Hey, wait a minute!

In my defence, it won't matter either way in a day or two.

[–]Gerbils74 -2 points-1 points ago

Time zones were not made until the late 1800s to assist train schedules

[–]DemonScytheX -1 points0 points ago

Why the fuck would they use something that wasn't even invented yet....

[–]sooperdavid -3 points-2 points ago

Did time zones even exist in Mayan times?

[–]SadTruth_HappyLies -3 points-2 points ago

Neither did leap years. The end of the Mayan calendar happened long before Dec 21.

[–]recourse9 3 points4 points ago

No sir, that is not correct. The long count calendar counts - days. Leap years keep our calender matched up to the season. The Mayan calender it doesn't matter. Here is a blog post for you.

http://jameswatt.me/2012/03/07/mayan-calendar-and-the-gregorian-leap-year/

[–]SadTruth_HappyLies 0 points1 point ago

You might be correct. I don't care enough to research it.

So, the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world this year just like our calendar predicts the end of the world on December 31st, 9999?

[–]JtheNinja 1 point2 points ago

More or less, yes.

[–]SadTruth_HappyLies 1 point2 points ago

Thanks. I'll enter that in my phone, so I don't forget.

[–]recourse9 0 points1 point ago

No, The mayans never predicted any world ending thing. Just that their calendar changed over today. It was new age white folk that thought up the mayan end of the world crap.

[–]sooperdavid 0 points1 point ago

aye, i knew about the leap years. i just wasnt sure about the time zone things.

fuck all you guys down voting me for asking a question :)
