I would think it is reasonable to assume astronomy would play a significant part in any end of the world predictions for ancient civilizations. The solstice will be december 21, 11:12 UTC.

The Mayans didn't even count on the leap years and all those added days. I believe their 21 of December was actually somewhere in September, if you count the days.

no. The mayan calander was discovered and converted. They did it day by day, and after converted (after the creation of leap years) it ended on 21/12/12 (aka 12/21/12)

No sir, that is not correct. The long count calendar counts - days. Leap years keep our calender matched up to the season. The Mayan calender it doesn't matter. Here is a blog post for you.
