Actually, it probably looks like that because of the fuel he is using. Kerosene, or some form of camping fuel. Nasty and dangerous. Paraffin lamp oil works best imho.

I've been using Jet A1 for decades and it's kerosene, (because it's free :-) Never had any safety problems, though the flame front often ends up less than a foot from my face on a big burn.

What is better about paraffin? I might give it a try.

Well there are a couple reasons why I prefer Paraffin. It is tasteless, nearly odorless, easier to control, and burns at a lower temperature.

Also, if you accidentally ingest some, the side effects on your body will be much less sever than with kerosene.

The control part is what I really like about it. Most often, I can bring the flame to within an inch or two of my lips, and hold it there. It's burn travels at a slower rate, increasing you ability to keep it under control in a prolonged blast.

Here are a couple of pics of me allowing it to chase almost completely to my lips with paraffin.
