You can tell he's guilty by the way he scoffs at the option of truth. Therefore, he couldn't do what you suggest because he'd be breaking the sacred rules of truth or dare. Dare was his only option, he just got beaten by a complicated bit of legalese. That's what they pay lawyers so much for, after all: knowing the right dares for the right case.

This one isn't very hard. It means you can't just lie without consequences - you're then guilty of perjury, regardless of anything else that has occurred. Obviously this isn't very significant for a murder case, but it may stop people wasting the court's time in smaller cases and disincentivises witnesses giving false testimony.

Note that it's the oath rather than the bible that is important here - that was historically important when people might have feared divine consequences too.

Using their bandwidth to download the image linked from another site doesn't benefit the author (assuming the image is linked directly, which it should be because otherwise nobody will click it), and can potentially destroy their site (and has in the past).

"Traffic" isn't just using their bandwidth - it's people actually going to the site and loading ads, which gives them ad revenue. People who liked the comic here and want to see more will go to the comments to look up the authors site.

"Rehost and link in comments" is the preferred way to post web comics.

I'm quite sure that "link the page (ads and all, not linking the image as you're assuming) and rehost in the comments" is, in fact, the preferred way to post webcomics. It's /r/comics policy after several posts from actual webcomic artists complaining about people doing it wrong.

Why the hell "nobody will click it" if it links to the page? Is /r/funny full of assholes? I am, in fact, talking about linking to the specific comic page in the archive, not the front page of the webcomic, so it'd have the same thumbnail and everything.

People won't click text links to images because of RES and Hoverzoom. With one of those you just have to mouse over a link to an image for the image to display without having to open a new tab or window. Also, if there are other thumbnails on the comic website (and there always are) it might use those as thumbnail images.

Even then, assuming nobody uses RES or Hoverzoom and everyone who would otherwise look at the images still clicks the link (neither is true), you bring the problem of the dreaded "accidental Reddit DDoS", which is the worst we can do for the artist - and yes, artists have complained about this before. It's less of a problem on /r/comics because of the smaller community, and thus smaller amounts of traffic generated, hence the different "rules".

I could swear this used to be in the sidebar of /r/comics; two self-posts from actual webcomic artists about this saying that rehosting is actually worse for them than the "accidental Reddit DDoS". I can't find the post now because all the keywords that would be in such a thing are on every page due to the sidebar (which doesn't link to the posts anymore, assuming it ever did and I'm not just thinking of a comment that linked to them)
