West Germany? How old is this?

[–]Brainfilteresin 0 points1 point ago

And a snail mail address to write to. How quaint.

Guns don't kill people. the don't walk up to people and kill them. stupid people kill people. if i stabbed you with a knife, would you be crying about knife control. everybody the movement has started. BAN ALL KITCHEN KNIVES!!!

[–]emarmite 2 points3 points ago

Every adult male in Switzerland has to keep a weapon at home until their national service ends at 45, and Israel has an almost similar level of gun ownership. Yet the incidence of death through firearms in the US is 50% higher than Israel and 300% higher than in Switzerland

Why is this?

If we had the same discrepancy in traffic deaths we'd be looking at how to improve safety in drivers, roads and cars (too late, that's already happened) but when it comes to firearms the debate seems to always get stuck at "ban all guns!"/"no changes to gun laws!".

How do we get to a place where we can have a discussion about a few basic changes that might get our death rate closer to other OECD countries that have similar levels of gun ownership? For instance, if you felt one of these gunmen might be a risk before he attacked would you even know what to do?

As a gun owner and a father of three small children these comments like "eliminating gun ownership is the answer!" or "people kill people, not guns!" make want to bitch slap folks.

Now any chance we can get on with the real discussion: how to reduce the killing?

Just to be precise: In Switzerland the mandatory military service regulations changes drastically in the past 10 years. The number of adult male owning a assault rifle dropped at least of the 38%.

[–]phoenixrises 0 points1 point ago

And your point? Emarmite is right. other countries around the world allow their people to have a weapon. some make it mandatory. the point is Americans don't know how to use in moderation or self restraint. that is why Americans are fat that is why there are so many car accidents here and that is why people are being shot. selfish irresponsible people thinking that they are better than anybody else or the law. then stupid people in large groups try to find something to blame to solve their issues only to find out later on that it wasn't the issue

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people" It's an old saying, but it's true.

[–]Oldschool64bus 2 points3 points ago

Cause ya know that hunk of metal just magically grew a pair of legs so it can run around killing all on its own! And and and the spoon made me fat! Yeah.... Dont forget the needles that make people do drugs and every thing we can place blame on instead of the asshole that decided to do something with it.

[–]f22afguy 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, the spoon that made you fat...

This isn't the point the picture is trying to make. It's asking you to explain the huge gap in numbers between our country and the others. You're right, guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people - but why so much more often here than anywhere else?

[–]Oldschool64bus 2 points3 points ago

Good question, id like to know why is it when somebody goes out drinking for the night, gets in their car and kills somebody they get a dui like they should, but nobody blames the car, it was the drunken idiot behind the wheel. Why is it when something bad happens with a gun, they blame the gun and not the person pulling the trigger? Theres something wrong with the people in our country. Maybe its the fact violence is so gloryfied in everything? I really like what Marylin Manson had to say in Rolling Stone after the Columbine shooting. http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/columbine-whose-fault-is-it-19990624?stop_mobi=yes

[–]f22afguy 1 point2 points ago

You're absolutely right...and I had no idea Marylin Manson was so well-written!

Stricter gun control won't fix the underlying problem, but in the meantime it will make it harder for those twisted individuals to get their hands on deadly weapons.

Because the USA is monumentally bigger than all of those other places and guns are too easy to get without a mental health screening?

[–]teh1337one 0 points1 point ago

According to the DSM, if you are going in to have a mental illness it's because you 100% of the time have one. If they can't find a disease that fits you in the book, well there is a disease for that!

Which would lead to a lot of issues of people trying to get firearms as well as totally fucking up our health care system with false reports of mental illness.

My friend was going to school to be a psychiatrist but gave it up and basically learning that doctors attempt to help patients by giving them prescription after prescription until they get it right, the patient kills themselves, kills other people, etc.

I honestly don't believe a mental screening will do jack shit though. It's really easy to go down the street and buy a gun illegally. I've been offered many times by people at work to buy or be given their old guns they don't use anymore. People in the National Guard are known for selling military weapons to civilians as well. A guy I work with caught a couple guys who were selling M16s, M4s, and a few pistols to a gang. They sold nearly 2500 firearms before they caught them, the guys who were doing it were selling it to a gang located several states away. Of course after he caught them, they fixed the flaw in security and he was told to cover up the story so the military didn't look like a bunch of dipshits.

32,788 traffic fatalities in 2010 in the US. That's actually the lowest level in 61 years. Cars are a menace. Stop them now.

[–]Oldschool64bus 0 points1 point ago

Damn cars making people drink, text and drive!

[–]CharlieMay -1 points0 points ago

And look where things like alcohol and obesity are in this list and tell me why we're not doing something about that.

Yeah, the part missing is the part about the actual gun control laws.

[–]malakistiri[S] 0 points1 point ago

We (you) have to do both! Regulation and Education!

[–]tsotha 0 points1 point ago

Shrug. An incident like yesterday's is the price of freedom.

[–]Pasaris 1 point2 points ago

USA! USA! USA! We're #1!!

[–]legthief -1 points0 points ago

The picture inadvertently sums up one of the age old reasons why kids love guns; They're just so damn pretty!

[–]malakistiri[S] -2 points-1 points ago

I can believe the blind stupidity of those who don't understand the problem. 1+1=2 More gun accessibility=more deaths

Also for the stupid ass is making the point about cars... Funny enough it's much harder to get a car than a gun. Plus a car is not build with the sole purpose to kill people: this might a reason, too. Idiot.

[–]Oldschool64bus -1 points0 points ago

Harder to get a car than a gun? Are you serious? Call up an ad on craigslist, heres my money now I have a car! Or since we are talking about people that dont obey the law, rock + window + hotwired = I have a car. Pretty much any object you pick up can be used to kill, doesnt matter if thats what it was built to do or not.

[–]malakistiri[S] 0 points1 point ago

We really live on parallel worlds.

[–]Oldschool64bus 0 points1 point ago

apparently you live in a fantasy land if you think making it harder for law abiding citizens to buy a gun will do a damn thing to CRIMINALS. Guns come into the country illegally every day just like drugs and illegal aliens.

[–]malakistiri[S] 1 point2 points ago

We are not talking about criminals here. I strongly believe that if this kid (that was not a criminal) had less access to guns this tragedy would have been avoided. I am not trying to solve the all gun issue. I am trying to say that the access creates the opportunity.

[–]Oldschool64bus -1 points0 points ago

And what im saying is if you are fucked up in the head enough that you just decide one day "hey, I think i'll go kill my mom and a bunch of kids!" Not being able to get your hands on some guns isnt going to stop you. Whos to say he wouldnt look up how to make pipe bombs and strap them on? Scumbag killed himself anyways.

[–]malakistiri[S] 1 point2 points ago

I agree that if you are fucked up in your head nothing stops you, but... I don't think he would be able to systematically kill 28 people as easy as with guns and rifles. Any obstacles encountered postpones your goal, so if he had to research and go out shopping for material to build bombs etc..., maybe it would have prevented it. The problem is that he just had to open a drawer, put the guns in a bag, and go...
