Here's some fresh(er) data from 2008.:

  • Japan 11
  • UK 32
  • Switzerland 18
  • Canada 200
  • Israel 61
  • Sweden 14
  • Germany 171
  • US 9484

Source: University of Sydney, numbers are total gun homicides.

[–]njndirish 30 points31 points ago

Pulled up the populations in 2008, here are the deaths per capita percentage:

  • 0.0000086320%

  • 0.0052652157%

  • 0.0238263504%

  • 0.0598979202%

  • 0.0949168303%

  • 0.0155020082%

  • 0.0207521763%

  • 0.3149366298%

[–]Eric_Greene 11 points12 points ago

Am I looking at this the wrong way? The US had a population of 305 million in 2008. The death per capita percentage would be 9,484/305,000,000, or 0.0031095082%. Your figure of .3149366298% indicates that there would have been roughly 100 times that many.

[–]Knight_of_Malta 1 point2 points ago

You are correct.

When people compare things like homicide rate, they always fail to control the data for population density, regional variations in income and education as well as other factors which, when included, actually show that the united states has less gun related violent crime than other countries do.

Gun control doesn't work, because criminals don't follow laws. They can make as many laws as they want.

"West Germany", how old is this propaganda poster?

[–]taxikab817 31 points32 points ago

1981, see above comment.

[–]onemoreclick 45 points46 points ago

Hi! Comments can move around depending on lots of things so it's best not to describe comments by location.

Hello

[–]geneusutwerk 1 point2 points ago

How are you doing?

[–]jlt6666 18 points19 points ago

Is it bad that I just want to know where I can get a gun like that?

[–]sarcasmosis[S] 24 points25 points ago

Walmart (obviously)

[–]Waffles81 20 points21 points ago

I never been to the US, but dont you just get one for free if you fill-up your big truck at the local gas station?

[–]amoliski 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, but only if the truck is lifted and has those smoke stacks.

[–]EncasedMeats 0 points1 point ago

Also, truck nuts.

[–]HonorAmongSteves 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, state law actually. They have to give you a gun.

[–]OneBillion 2 points3 points ago

No, only if you are the only person in a lifted SUV, you're white, and that gas station has been bailed out by our brilliant government.

[–]AndyYankee17 -1 points0 points ago

Yes. Businesses here, instead of giving Buy 1 get 1 coupons, or a fixed percentage off, instead give out firearms to attract consumers.

[–]rainbowjarhead 0 points1 point ago

Businesses such as this right-wing website.

[–]njndirish 0 points1 point ago

Only in texas

[–]seltaeb4 17 points18 points ago

ask around in /r/MURICA

[–]JMce89 6 points7 points ago

Buy a revolver, take it to a gunsmith and have him ruin your purchase.

[–]OldTimeGentleman 10 points11 points ago

Ruin ? Obviously you're not MURICAAAAAAAAAAAAN enough, sir !

[–]JMce89 5 points6 points ago

Being the child of immigrants may be my problem.

[–]pumpkincat 12 points13 points ago

Being a child of immigrants makes you the most MURICAAAAAN person possible.

[–]weezer3989 8 points9 points ago

So long as those immigrants were white, protestants from europe. Anything else? Tough luck.

[–]ProudTexan 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking the same thing. Not the feel bad part. Fuck this propaganda. But yeah yiu could probably just buy a revolver and get the metal dura coated and buy custom hand grips.

[–]bigbangbilly 1 point2 points ago

Real guns that look like toys are banned in the US

[–]jlt6666 6 points7 points ago

It looks nothing like a toy. It looks like an instrument of pure freedom that dispenses righteous justice.

[–]bigbangbilly 1 point2 points ago

No, by their definition toy guns includes brightly colored guns.

hun, the US has gone down a little bit.

[–]pumpkincat 6 points7 points ago

Crime in the US has been in decline in general since the eighties, at least the last time I checked.

[–]teh_booth_gawd 15 points16 points ago

By including Switzerland, is it suggesting we all have military grade rifles in our homes instead of handguns?? O_o

[–]Zorkamork 21 points22 points ago

Sure, since in the Swiss system every single gun is tightly controlled and watched by the state and if you're ever taking it out of your home it's in a locked secure case to a shooting event because their justice system brings the almighty hammer down on gun crime. Also the only way to get them is to have served in the military and been well trained in them.

[–]Das_Mime 10 points11 points ago

Also you have to account for ammo.

[–]Zorkamork 2 points3 points ago

Yea I have zero issue with the Swiss system. You may, if you want, own a gun, but only if you have a good month or so of solid training, submit it to heavy government oversight, and understand if you ever take it out of your home not in a secure case you're going have police tackling you before you can say 'what the shit'.

Of course, the Swiss system mainly works due to it being a very small, mostly affluent, nation.

[–]Calimhero 0 points1 point ago

And also, the Swiss are more reasonable. More than ten thousand service weapons are missing: some are lost, a good amount may have been sold on the black market, but no-one had the urge to go on a school rampage.

[–]Eilinen 8 points9 points ago

Problems with handguns is that they are easy to conceal, as opposed to shotguns and rifles. You carry a rifle if you know you're going to need it (going to practice or to hunt). The weapon is also likely stored in a hard-to-access metal box etc. due to only being needed so often (you don't leave it lying next to umbrella when you get home!).

Handguns are carried around for protection, so you have one with you always; that already increases the the amount of potential accident situations exponentially. If you only keep it in the house for security, it's likely situated in a place where you can get it fast if you notice something unusual (this increases accident-situations with kids and also leads to lost handguns with robberies - meaning there are more illegal guns on the market, meaning it's cheap to get one).

In my country, Finland (which has 1/3 of the guns USA has, of which most are rifles and shotguns) the death count according to the updates poster is only 1/10th of USA per capita.

[–]Calimhero 0 points1 point ago

Here in France, the only weapons you can have are rifles, with a hunting licence. Said licence takes months to obtain, you have to take classes, etc.

Even though double barrel shotguns are still used to shoot spouses or noisy neighbors from time to time, but it's impossible to shoot so many people.

[–]Mack488 20 points21 points ago

Israel is void, they literally have missles coming through the roof.

[–]sarcasmosis[S] 16 points17 points ago

Oh definitely. It's over 30 years old (link below).

[–]unimaginative_ID 26 points27 points ago

I think the reference to West Germany is a dead giveaway.

[–]seltaeb4 6 points7 points ago

Gedammt! Und ve almoscht got avay mit it . . .

[–]LuxNocte 1 point2 points ago

I thought I understood German there for a second.

[–]rawveggies 17 points18 points ago

Ad Week says it is from 1981 and that it was released shortly after John Lennon was murdered.

The Brady Campaign have an updated one on their website.

[–]sarcasmosis[S] 1 point2 points ago

Excellent. Thank you.

[–]kapy53 4 points5 points ago

Also Mexico isn't on this list.

[–]Calimhero 10 points11 points ago

The term "gun control" is used in comedy clubs in Mexico.

[–]lsqDrunkenMaster 1 point2 points ago

Because they rather use machetes.

[–]AndyYankee17 1 point2 points ago

Well all their guns come from the US anyways, including all the RPGs, machine guns, M-16's and kevlar vests. Didn't you know that?

[–][deleted] ago

[–]sarcasmosis[S] 0 points1 point ago

Because you didn't watch enough of my youtube show about eating (that had a mall miniseries).

[–]cbmuser 6 points7 points ago

Because missiles are owned by civilians?

[–]anarchistica 0 points1 point ago

That's 5,3 deaths per year. So 11,5 times less than gun homicides. ಠ_ಠ

[–]lsqDrunkenMaster 5 points6 points ago

I guess the documentary "The Killing of America" from 1982 is pretty relevand at this point. NSFW and NSFL. Contains graphic unstaged material.

EDIT: It was cowritten by Leonard Schrader (The Yakuza, Mishima - A Life in four chapters)

[–]TheFreestOfTheFree 0 points1 point ago

FUCK THAT COMMIE SHIT. IF I WANT A GUN I'LL HAVE ONE.

[–]rawveggies 2 points3 points ago

Looks like /r/MURICA sprung a leek, better go send a patriot to patch 'er up.

[–]TheYellowBastard 3 points4 points ago

The only logic I can take from this poster is that it is Americans you need to be warey of, not hand guns, loads of countries have similar gun laws or even lesser gun laws than america, Switzerland force you to own a gun, guns don't kill people, Americans do.

[–]BrooksWasHere1 3 points4 points ago

Guns don't kill people. I kill people. Not really.

[–]CL33 2 points3 points ago

There is no end to this debate. The real statistic is how many of the shootings was the weapon not registered of illegal? Because per capita of course the US looks like a gang of pistol wielding psychopaths. Propaganda only fuels fear.

[–]Calimhero 7 points8 points ago

the US looks like a gang of pistol wielding psychopaths.

That's pretty much how America looks to the rest of the world.

[–]rawveggies 0 points1 point ago

Propaganda only fuels fear.

Creating fear is possible with propaganda, but I don't think that is the most common reason it is used. There are much more effective and reliable ways to influence people than frightening them.

[–]student_mammal 1 point2 points ago

Technically homicide is any person killing another regardless of motive. Murder is a different story.

[–]JamieBevvers 0 points1 point ago

8? Fuck yeah.

[–]moshes 0 points1 point ago

Comparing small countries to big ones? You can get the same pposter with sharks

[–]veeas 0 points1 point ago

bravo, bravo great use of the gun control theme spun unto the 20th century movie poster.

[–]tiberis1221 1 point2 points ago

Japan? how come, guns are banned for almost every citizen...

[–]blueberries 10 points11 points ago

Yeah I think that's kind of the point...our extremely lax gun laws lead to much higher rates of gun crimes than countries with stricter gun laws.

[–]iPatjo -1 points0 points ago

I wonder if 21 is a high number for Sweden, sounds kinda high anyways. Also this feels relevant with the school-shooting that happened yesterday.

[–]jakethesnakebakecake 1 point2 points ago

Anyone have the number of shootings leading to death in which the handgun is not legally owned? From what I've read, generally the people who abide by the law and get their weapon with state permits aren't shooting very many people with them. From NY, close friend went through a year and a half of paperwork so he could get his conceal/carry permit for a handgun (He wants to be a PI or get a security job)

[–]ericbraun8 -1 points0 points ago

Post the assault rifle numbers, plus explosives.

You want to use just homicide rates? Okay. Let's compare America to some other prominent developed nations, shall we?

Intentional homicide rates per 100,000

United States: 4.2
South Korea 2.6
Israel: 2.1
Canada: 1.6
United Kingdom: 1.2
Ireland: 1.2
France: 1.1
Netherlands: 1.1
Sweden: 1.0
China: 1.0
Australia: 1.0
Denmark 0.9
Italy 0.9
New Zealand: 0.9
Germany: 0.8
Spain: 0.8
Japan: 0.3
Hong Kong: 0.2

Out of interest, a few of the nations currently in conflict:
Yemen: 4.2
Palestine: 4.1
Afghanistan: 2.4
Lebanon: 2.2
Iraq: 2.0
Egypt: 1.2

You're no Honduras or El Salvador, but you can't compare yourselves socially, culturally or economically to them. But of the top 10 countries on the HDI index, you've got the highest homicide rate by far. And when you look at it, America has more people (per 100,000) murdered just by guns (3.1) than are murdered in any way in Australia, Canada and Japan combined. It isn't just guns that are the problem - Canada has a rate of gun ownership that doesn't lag too far behind, but they have less than half the homicides the US does and only a 0.5 per 100,000 firearm homicide rate . I believe (as do many here, it seems) that it's down to a mixture of poor gun regulation, a culture that glorifies guns and violence, and a lack of mental health support.

Why do all the uppity gun clenchers RANDOMLY TYPE IN CAPITALS as if it illustrates a point?
