This is misleading because it doesn't give numbers per capita and seems to be really old since it refers to "West Germany"

[–]snachodog 8 points9 points ago

This is misleading because it insinuates that inanimate objects can take action.

I fucking hate the "guns don't kill people, people kill people!" argument. Sure, but guns make it a hell of a lot easier for those people to kill.

I actually agree with "guns don't kill people, people kill people," but pundits always focus on the "guns don't kill people part" too much, not enough on the people FUCKING KILL people. We need to help the individuals disturbed enough to go on these sprees, but it's easier to ban guns than actually be kind to our fellow man.

So to fertilizer and fuel bombs, cars, knives, baseball bats, plastic bags, poisons . . .

If anything, this is just proof that it's american gun culture that's the problem, not gun law - Switzerland has incredibly lax gun laws.

[–]Butthole_Scientist -2 points-1 points ago

When you think of American Gun culture, what is the image that you are painting in your head? A bunch of white guys sitting in a tree, hunting? A bunch of people at a gun show? Some people having fun shooting at a range? People that have a gun for home defense?

Or do you think of black teenagers shooting other black teenagers in Chicago and Washington DC?

The ghetto black culture is the problem, not gun culture.

White men have a homicide rate of around 4 per 100,000. Black men have a homicide rate of over 30 per 100,000.

In deaths per million citizens

  • USA - 34.07
  • Israel - 7.34
  • Switzerland - 4.25
  • Sweden - 2.21
  • Canada - 1.48
  • Germany - 0.51
  • Japan - 0.37
  • UK - 0.12

While I don't want this to turn into another gun debate, I just thought I'd mention that the ad (obviously) only lists a small subset of countries. The US is not the worst country by far when it comes to gun related fatalities.

Honduras takes the top spot for that, with 5201 fatal shootings in 2010, or 684 per million citizens.

I'll appreciate the list may mislead people into believing that the United States is the number one, but Honduras is the 106th nation by HDI and has a GDP per capita 1/12 of America, ignoring any other conflicts there I don't think it's a valid comparison. The small subset of countries listed by Caneb are all in the top 20 nations by HDI except for the UK and the top 22 nations by GDP except for Israel, I feel like it's a more suitable list.

Came here for this comment. Thanks.

Also, fun (or not so much) fact: there are 88.8 guns per 100 people in the USA. If we counted guns as people, our population would nearly double,

[–]mesohungry 11 points12 points ago

If we counted rice as people, our population would easily be in the quadrillions.

[–]shadoworc01 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I know it's a silly way of phrasing it. I just think people can connect to it better than the numbers alone.

[–]xPye 0 points1 point ago

If we counted grains of sand as people, we'd have a lot of people.

[–]My_fifth_account 13 points14 points ago

Turning this sub into a mass shooting circlejerk as well. Great.

Reddit will have forgotten about it within a week don't you worry. Although I don't know how that's a good thing, just because we forget doesn't mean it's not still an important issue.

Accessibility.

[–]Modus_Pwninz[!] 6 points7 points ago

Meth is about illegal as illegal gets, but I can make a few calls and get a whole bunch of meth. And I'm not even in the drug scene. Likewise, I could also make a few calls and get a full-auto assault weapon, even though they're largely illegal AND owning one legally is a very hard process.

The issue is that getting illegal things, or making them, is pretty easy. Humans are crafty.

Instead of chopping the heads off of weeds, lets say we get to the root. Mental health issues for gun violence, and treatment for drugs. Both are infinitely better options than BAN BAN BAN!

The weird thing is that a lot of anti-gun folks are also anti-drug war. Cognitive dissonance, anyone?

Fine to post this, but your title feels distasteful.

West Germany

[–]Faenah 1 point2 points ago

I think this ad is really old - I can tell by the fonts and the overall look. I'd say mid 80's.

But I really like the art direction.

[–]RaCaS123 1 point2 points ago

As a Brit I just can't believe we only had 8 gun-related deaths in 1 year.

[–]Butthole_Scientist 0 points1 point ago

You didn't. Last year you had about 55.

[–]Zombiewaffles42 0 points1 point ago

Criminals will get guns regardless if there are laws against it or not, that is why they are criminals, they break laws. If lawful citizens are allowed to have guns they will be more able to defend themselves from criminals with guns, hence, less innocent people will be killed by guns.

[–]iffraz -5 points-4 points ago

Pretty sure we have a bigger population and more crime due to our multitude of ridiculous laws.
