The clouds make it look like the mountainside is on fire. Really cool, just in time for the end of the world album.

[–]pumpkindog 7 points8 points ago

Mr Everest is on fire

your argument is invalid

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

This mountain doesn't really look like Everest at all. It has been a few year since I was REALLY obsessed with Chomolungma and it could be a new angle that I have never seen, but I would bet it isn't Everest.

[–]kepleronlyknows 4 points5 points ago

OP's photo is of Annapurna, another 8,000 meter peak and in fact the deadliest of all the 8,000 meter peaks. I posted this over in /r/alpinism and they confirmed Annapurna.

[–]kruckles 1 point2 points ago

Annapurna is a section of peaks. Annapurna I has the highest fatality ratio, however the peak in this picture is Annapurna South.

[–]nrbtall 1 point2 points ago

You're a Chomolungma.

[–]Cirrus001 7 points8 points ago

There are over 200 corpses upon this mountain. Can you find them?

Mt Everest Meets Battlefield 3

[–]OddBones 12 points13 points ago

Just the way I like it.

[–]Ted_Dangus 0 points1 point ago

I was hoping someone would do this. Thank you.

DUN DUN DUN DA DUN. DUN DUN DUN DA DUN.

[–]Stillbornchild 27 points28 points ago

That isn't Everest

I should know, I climbed the fucking thing in 2002

[–]nrbtall 5 points6 points ago

I'm proud of you.

[–]ewok_bukkake 3 points4 points ago

How hard is it? I'm 22 and have no experience but have always wanted to. Don't even know where I'd start though

[–]FartingBob 10 points11 points ago

At the bottom is the general accepted start point.

[–]Stillbornchild 3 points4 points ago

In terms of climbing ability it's not very taxing, you obviously need some rock (and ice) climbing experience but beyond the hillary step there's not a whole lot to it (unless you're coming up the north face). The biggest challenge is coping with the altitude and your own ego, most of the people who have died on the mountain did so because they didn't have the sense to turn back in time.

But anyway, if you're looking for a place to start I'd suggest googling around for mountianeering clubs near where you live, and if you're in the US I'd suggest Mt Rainier as a goal before you think about Everest.

Never climbed it, but agreed, definitely not Everest. Trying to figure out if it's even an 8,000er.

[–]lefixx 0 points1 point ago

Well if a stillborn can do it, why can't I?

[–]Stillbornchild 2 points3 points ago

All you need is a sherpa to pull you up and rich parents bro

[–]acdsa 11 points12 points ago

This is not mount everest

[–]edweirdo 1 point2 points ago

Which mountain is it?

[–]acdsa -5 points-4 points ago

Gasherbrum I from the side.

[–]edweirdo 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm...I see some dis-similarities between the two. I've also seen some images of Everest that would seem to validate OP, but the different angles make it hard to tell.

Tough to be sure.

[–]NotYetBuddha -1 points0 points ago

Corrected: It is not Everest, its Annapurna.
Thanks to /u/kepleronlyknows

[–]kepleronlyknows 11 points12 points ago

Your pic is everest, but that's not the same mountain as OPs photo at all. Think about it from a geological perspective- Everest has those prominent diagonal bands that form the broad flat spot on the left ridge in your photo. Those are completely absent from OP's photo.

They're similar mountains, but OP's is also much steeper than Everest.

Edit: Copied from my comment further up: OP's photo is of Annapurna, another 8,000 meter peak and in fact the deadliest of all the 8,000 meter peaks. I posted this over in /r/alpinism and they confirmed Annapurna.

[–]AzonZen 0 points1 point ago

I would give gold for this comment if I wasn't broke. All this Everest and other mountain talk makes me cringe.

[–]NotYetBuddha 0 points1 point ago

I agree. Both look similar.
Thank you

[–]aranasyn 3 points4 points ago

More like Mount Doom.

Cool pic.

[–]grubas 1 point2 points ago

This is clearly part of the Misty Mountains, Mount Doom had a big floating eye near it.

[–]PBnJames 3 points4 points ago

I suddenly understand why people want to climb that thing.

[–]imasunbear 2 points3 points ago

Is there any video from the top of mount everest on a clear, high visibility day? I wonder how far you could see...

[–]imasunbear 1 point2 points ago

Damn.

[–]edweirdo 2 points3 points ago

You could probably see all the way around the world and get a glimpse of the back some guy on top of a mountain with a video camera.

[–]imasunbear 1 point2 points ago

Then we just need a high enough resolution camera to see what that camera is recording.

And then...

[–]gogler8 1 point2 points ago

Top right shadow looks like a puppies face.

[–]xxhoixx 1 point2 points ago

Makes me want to climb it and pointlessly freeze to death on it.

[–]babambam 1 point2 points ago

Pretty Magnificent. Love the fire in the sunrise.

[–]tek9 1 point2 points ago

Perspective is amazing, looks like I could climb it in a few hours

[–]goodwolf 1 point2 points ago

Fun fact. George Everest, after whom the peak was named, pronounced his name "eev-rest".

[–]goodwolf 0 points1 point ago

Always.

[–]buckyball_60 0 points1 point ago

Cause he was Bri'ish?

[–]goodwolf 2 points3 points ago

Having never heard a Brit call the mount that, I'm pretty sure it was a peculiarity of his family.

[–]SoulsArentStone 0 points1 point ago

Relevant for finals week.

[–]lamjordan 0 points1 point ago

I have always dreamed of climbing Everest, and this will remain my background til i succeed.

Prolly after as well

[–]freedomweasel 0 points1 point ago

Just a heads up, you'll end up on the wrong mountain if you follow this photo, because it's of Annapurna South.

[–]lamjordan 0 points1 point ago

well... dam. thanks for the info

[–]JohnnysLanPartyHat 0 points1 point ago

That light makes it look like on fire

[–]TaxidermyRobot 0 points1 point ago

Is there a size comparison of Mt Everest next to other mountains from around the world?

[–]Sneerglaw 0 points1 point ago

What r/wallpapers made it to the front page? What is this!

[–]MrCrashdummy[S] 0 points1 point ago

I made it to the front page? Sweet! Guess people like wallpapers eh!

[–]starcitysecrets 0 points1 point ago

This is Annapurna South in the Himalya's

[–]boatsnshows 0 points1 point ago

is that the north face?

[–]ligersarereal66 0 points1 point ago

that is one beautiful Toblerone

[–]thatguyinyourkitchen 0 points1 point ago

It looks like Mt.Everest is running for president

[–]ez617 0 points1 point ago

Look closely, maybe you'll spot a dead body.

[–]Bethyi -1 points0 points ago

pffft. Doesn't look so big. I bet I could do that on a slow afternoon.

[–]thebootlegsaint 3 points4 points ago

pffft. I'm posting from the summit right now.

[–]edweirdo 0 points1 point ago

I think this may just be perhaps the top half of it. Isn't that lumpy mass closest to the camera another mountaintop?

[–]doobie_stooba -2 points-1 points ago

K2

[–]boob 1 point2 points ago

Is it safe to assume that's the south face?
