Original sin was the opposite of ignorance. It was in fact becoming aware of sin.

My proof? The very first thing Adam and Eve did once they ate the Fruit of Knowledge was to cover their nudity (feel shame), and hide from God (feel unworthy).

There is a lot more the Bible later says on the topic of sin. But IMHO, the damage was done and people were already incapable of looking past how simple and profound those first two sinful actions were. All of the later Bible goes on to say is; look you now have conscious minds that allow you to question your own behavior in an abstract way. You weren't ready for it, but you need to learn how to live with it without killing yourself and others and develop psychosis because of it. So, all those things your doing that make you feel unnaturally guilty, angry, happy or other extreme emotions; stop feeling that way and just live.

The point of it all to me is to point out humanities journey from having the psychology of an animal (what other animals think of their actions in terms of sin - denying their instincts) to one with a mind that can recognize their own actions are driven by a sort of automatic programming and struggle to still find their own control (free will). I think this problem would arise for any animal (or even AI) that developed our cognizant abilities.
