That dragonfly was caught in front of a macro photographer with a spray bottle. There was no dew involved.

[–]hypnoderp 57 points58 points ago

Came here to say the same thing. Feel like this needs to be more widely known outside the photography community.

[–]YOLO_HASHTAG_SWAG 15 points16 points ago

Well consider me newly informed. Can't stop the signal.

[–]AntonChigur 4 points5 points ago

Can't stop or won't stop?

[–]TheHappyRogue 8 points9 points ago

[–]ruraph 1 point2 points ago

I will.

[–]asshatnowhere 4 points5 points ago

i could swear there was another account that has the same name...

[–]YOLO_HASHTAG_SWAG 3 points4 points ago

HASHTAG_YOLOSWAG is an impostor.

[–]coder2 2 points3 points ago

How's your lovebot bride?

[–]YOLO_HASHTAG_SWAG 4 points5 points ago

We're doing well.

[–]whatwasigonnasay 4 points5 points ago

Is there anything more pathetic than copying another redditors username?

[–]Random_Link_Roulette 0 points1 point ago

Cant Stop he said !

[–]uneditablepoly 1 point2 points ago

Unless they kill you with a sword.

[–]root88 18 points19 points ago

If there are two things that every macro photographer loves, it's dead bugs and water drops.

[–]patssle 25 points26 points ago

I took this photo with a macro-lens...it was certainly alive. Just took a little patience slowly moving to get that close.

[–]Its_Not_My_Blood 3 points4 points ago

Did you set it free?

[–]Trevid 6 points7 points ago

No, I let nature take its course. Here is a video of the event. The video has been edited to a shorter length because the majority of the video I took was out of focus.

[–]AceMgy 1 point2 points ago

This is like watching the arachnid version of "The Old Man and the Sea" except he (she?) actually gets the big fish at the end.

So now that I think about it it's not much like that book at all...

I'm not much of a photographer, but I prefer the original. Really beautiful shot.

[–]mattindustries 1 point2 points ago

I replied to the wrong guy, woops.

[–]darkdeus 4 points5 points ago

Nice, I took this with a crappy point and shoot camera then cropped it. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7359476562_883800dfc2_b.jpg

Looks like the same dragonfly!

[–]mattindustries 2 points3 points ago

Made some edits, hope you like them.

[–]derptyherp 0 points1 point ago

Oh neat. The lighter shades of the original bring out a more mystic feel to me, but I do like the darker shades here regardless. Very cool.

[–]Hjortur95 1 point2 points ago

That's nuts

[–]Kontroll 0 points1 point ago

Nice shot. But he's stealing your hardware. SQUISH IT!!!

[–]PuntzJones 0 points1 point ago

What lens were you using?

[–]root88 0 points1 point ago

Great shot. However, you didn't spray it with water while it remained completely still. Your shot is filled with movement.

[–]somekook 10 points11 points ago

taken before sunrise, when the dew covers everything.

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit.

[–]AlpakaWhacker 3 points4 points ago

Even so... its still a beautiful photograph

[–]milordi 0 points1 point ago

[–]Flo_Rida 0 points1 point ago

Torches shall be readied

[–]LionHead25 1 point2 points ago

NO WAY!!!! I thought that this guy just has the greatest timing ever and can sneak up on bugs

[–]diaperbandit 0 points1 point ago

Macro photographer here: A spray bottle will not produce droplets that look like that... But, there are other artificial ways to get that look.

I understood that references, reference.

[–]RelevantFactoid 21 points22 points ago

There are more than 5,000 known species of dragonflies, all of which (along with damselflies) belong to the order Odonata, which means “toothed one” in Greek and refers to the dragonfly’s serrated teeth.

[–]neckbeard_dominance 18 points19 points ago

Original Photo

Good job not linking to it

[–]TheUltimatePoet 15 points16 points ago

Sure it's pretty to look at, but I bet it's really annoying for the poor dragonfly.

[–]root88 15 points16 points ago

It's already dead. That is how the photographer was able to get the photo without it flying off.

[–]jellybonez 13 points14 points ago

You can always count on root88 to suck the joy out of every photo.

"Yeah, that sailor kissing that lady at the harbour? He died 20 years ago."

[–]root88 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why, but for some reason, people often care more about how a photo was taken than how it looks. If you are fascinated by the amazing thing the photographer found, this image isn't take interesting. If you are amazed by the great image that the photographer created, it is. Personally, I only ever care about the end result, I don't care how many tricks or how much photoshop is used. I mainly pointed it out because this is a photography thread and someone else may have wanted to recreate the shot.

[–]oxkarthemighty 7 points8 points ago

It's not already dead, it's early in the morning when it's cold. I've taken quite a few photos during this time. Insects don't move, but you can see his multi faceted eye looking directly at the camera. When a dragonfly (or any other insect for that matter dies) the color starts to fade frome the eyes extremely fast. That, and the eyes would lose the directional focal point (that little black pupil-like thing in the center).

[–]oxkarthemighty 1 point2 points ago

Aaaaaaaand....I misspelt from, sheesh.

[–]indenturedsmile 4 points5 points ago

There's an edit button...

[–]oxkarthemighty 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, not on my iPad. At least that I have found at least. I'm kinda new to posting on Reddit. My computer is a lot easier for my new found Reddit addiction.

[–]jkgao 3 points4 points ago

Alien Blue app, probably one of the best apps you'll get, has an edit function.

[–]oxkarthemighty 1 point2 points ago

Just bought it on your recommendation. Seems pretty cool! Thanks!

[–]root88 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough. It's way easier with dead ones and photoshop.

[–]neonsoul 3 points4 points ago

it's natural for many dragonflies. they collect dew overnight and it uses its tongue to lick it up. a easy water supply for arid living dragonflies.

[–]Might_be_a_Geek 2 points3 points ago

I cannot imagine what it would be like to see through a dragonfly's eyes.

[–]Baublehead 4 points5 points ago

I imagine it's harder to imagine seeing through a dragonfly's eyes when they have water drops on them.

[–]Phoenix_Cruz 2 points3 points ago

I think the generic "see hundreds of images at once" stereotype you see on TV all the time is bogus. Sight is determined as by the brain's use of the information as much as(if not more than) the eyes themselves.

[–]uncleawesome 0 points1 point ago

Im sure they see just one big picture. I have two eyes and only see one image. Shouldn't be different no matter how many eyes.

[–]HighVoltageTurtle 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. They'll just be able to see in a nearly 360 degree picture, most likely. Which is still pretty hard to comprehend. Being able to look in front and behind you at the same time? Pah.

[–]RhinoAttack 0 points1 point ago

I felt like this on LSD once.

[–]chigonzo 4 points5 points ago

Oh, look. This old chestnut.

[–]macncheez_ 1 point2 points ago

No credit for the x-post from /r/macroporn?!

[–]Hjortur95 0 points1 point ago

Am I going to find 30+ min star craft videos on that sub?

[–]macncheez_ 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely not. Nothing but amazing high def photography. Enjoy.

On a scale not appreciable by the naked human eye. So much beauty goes unseen and wonders unwondered.

[–]621veggiemonster 0 points1 point ago

Do you know what kind of camera was used..?

[–]somekook 0 points1 point ago

Likely a digital SLR with a lens specially designed for taking close-up shots of small things.

[–]OverflowingAwesome 0 points1 point ago

we must zoom in further

Given how the eyes of a dragonfly work: relevant.

Sprayed or not, this one is actually fucking beautyful. I would not be able to make a picture like this.

[–]CallinInstead 0 points1 point ago

[–]CensoredBlonde 0 points1 point ago

Stunning

[–]ThePeskyWabbit 0 points1 point ago

Does every photographer who takes these think they are original?

[–]MogusMaximus 5 points6 points ago

In my experience, individuals with your attitude tend to be bitter failures.

[–]ThePeskyWabbit -2 points-1 points ago

Im no failure but im bitter as fuck

[–]JavaLSU 2 points3 points ago

Are you bitter because someone stole all your apostrophes?

[–]SJjnr -2 points-1 points ago

I wonder if the dewdrops feel annoying on it's eyes. Maybe it's just like wearing contacts...WHO KNOWS!

[–]gt35built 0 points1 point ago

Those are THC crystals.

Dragonfly:
