Thanks, gif doesnt do him justice. I mean, his voice is part of the complete Steve Irwin experience.

[–]hawkeyezzz 60 points61 points ago

Agreed! The gif made me smile, but the video made me laugh

[–]sennais1 22 points23 points ago

I loved that "I'll have him subdued any minute". Made me laugh at the positivity this guy radiated.

[–]yerm620 5 points6 points ago

John! Give us a hand, mate.

[–]Locke57[!] 220 points221 points ago

Gifs like this need to just be posted as the video, but then no one would watch it. So in its gif form, it gets people to come to comments for a link to the video, therefore taking MORE time to actually see the video in question then if it had just been posted AS a video.

Aint life grand?

[–]M3nt0R 74 points75 points ago

We've got ourselves a sociologist/anthropologist/social commentator.

In its gif form it also allows for more accessibility to the masses to spread the 'message' or the 'idea' to more people. Then in the comments, those who care to dig deeper can still access the original more fulfilling and more encompassing message/idea.

Usually the top comment is the link to the video anyway (or near the top comment. If not just ctrl+f "Source" or "video" and you'll find it anyway).

It takes you an extra couple of seconds, but more people got 'the message' through the gif. it's a very instant-gratification society we live in, even when clicking funny links. take what you can get, mah man.

[–]Locke57[!] 10 points11 points ago

I was just pointing out the fact that this is the cycle of videos I see on reddit.

Should I feel complimented by the first thing you said or a bit offended, I really can't tell.

Edit: spelling.

[–]M3nt0R 6 points7 points ago

No I appreciate people with an eye for detail, and observation. I did present it in a rather rash manner, though.

[–]Tredinator 11 points12 points ago

That way we get a preview that doesn't carry the risk of being loud.

[–]ansate 526 points527 points ago

I always loved "The safest place to pick up a snake is roight behind its head. You should never grab a snake by the tail, it can turn around and bite you!" <picks snake up by tail>

[–]Catsfosho 325 points326 points ago

I love how you spelled "right" just as he pronounces it. I read that in a killer Steve Irwin voice

[–][deleted] 133 points134 points ago

You can't pronounce "roight" without doing it in a Steve Irwin/Australian accent.

[–]HITMAN616 202 points203 points ago

You also can't pronounce "my cocaine" without saying "Michael Caine" in his own voice.

[–]jsnizz 79 points80 points ago

Thanks to you i've been sitting here saying Michael Caine/my cocaine for the past minute to myself. Time to go outside

[–]DownbeatDinosaur 66 points67 points ago

Hah! Outside. This guy...

[–]Watawkichaw 7 points8 points ago

Found that one out the hard way, did we? Won't be fucking with Michael Caine's cocaine anymore, will ya?

[–]Arpeggi42 19 points20 points ago

Also, "beer can" in a British accent is the same as "bacon" in a Jamaican accent.

[–]xcrunner318 8 points9 points ago

[–]ansate 11 points12 points ago

I'd have loved to type the whole thing like that, but I am not that smooth, and I would be lynched by Aussies for my incorrectness.

[–]Tannon34 38 points39 points ago

He was Steve Irwin, he could do what ever he darn well pleased

[–]KingLiberal 60 points61 points ago

Steve Irwin once wrestled a live Chuck Norris to the ground and de-fanged it before releasing it back into the wild!

[–]druhol 79 points80 points ago

Lies. Steve would never defang a Chuck Norris, as doing so would be detrimental to the beast's ability to survive in the wild.

[–]BMWPaulsen 173 points174 points ago

I just laughed out loud then immediately got really sad.

[–]Rswany 124 points125 points ago

[–]flclreddit 65 points66 points ago

Exactly. If I was a hot blonde chick.

[–]JonathanWarner 6 points7 points ago

Don't be sad that he is gone, be happy because he happened.

[–]3DBeerGoggles 3 points4 points ago

Bittersweet tears.

[–]vengefulpunk 706 points707 points ago

Steve Irwin died on my Birthday, worst surprise party ever

[–]hawkeyezzz 428 points429 points ago

I still remember the night when I found out. I was at my friends house and it was around two in the morning when we found out. We had a short candlelight vigil outside. Then we chased some deer.

[–]Turnuslives 63 points64 points ago

I hope it was snowing and you were in shorts.

[–]busby2 93 points94 points ago

I was playing World of Warcraft farming for Felcloth in Azshara when I heard it over raid chat. WHERE WERE YOUUUU....

[–]TheWeenis 30 points31 points ago

I heard about it on WoW too...same with MJ's death. I don't go on WoW anymore because i'm scared :(

[–]OliveDrabCup 13 points14 points ago

I heard about 2 girls one cup on WoW. I was 11.

I would have to say I'm equally, if not more scarred.

[–]gx61 55 points56 points ago

I heard about it over WoW too...got a pet crocodile on my hunter to commemorate him.

[–]WildZontar 20 points21 points ago

O.o I was in World of Warcraft flying over Azshara when I heard it over raid chat.

[–]REIGNx777 12 points13 points ago

I was in Ironforge :[

[–]HASHTAG_YOLOSWAG 369 points370 points ago

He would've liked that, a fitting ceremony.

[–]Tannon34 105 points106 points ago

They didn't wrestle any crocs or poke venomous snakes with sticks though

[–]eyeoutthere 158 points159 points ago

They did the best they could with the resources available.

[–]hawkeyezzz 26 points27 points ago

Thank you for understanding

[–]I_Think_Alot 40 points41 points ago

So like, firework snakes and mouse traps?

[–]HITMAN616 17 points18 points ago

I tried to tell that to my boss and I still got fired :(.

[–]Jamienra 30 points31 points ago

I was in a coffee shop, running away from home when I heard the news. Our hero, Jecht Steve, gone. Stung by a sting ray! My dad must have been his biggest fan. I knew how sad he'd be. Heck, we all were that day. "Jamienra," I says to myself, "What are you thinking?" I went running straight back home. We sat up talking 'bout Jecht Steve all night. My dad and I never talked so much.

[–]Reckotch 15 points16 points ago

"whoa, sorry. Didn't mean to reminisce, folks!"

[–]sydstap24 28 points29 points ago

I was also at a friends house. I went to the bathroom and cried a few silent tears. He was my biggest idol ever when I was younger because we had just Animal Planet and Cartoon Network and I always picked animal plant. I has made it my goal in life to go an meet him when I was older. :(

[–]justsoldmysoul 24 points25 points ago

I remember the first time I picked an animal plant

[–]frostburner 4 points5 points ago

You could always meet his daughter

[–]Clayh5 16 points17 points ago

I was eating breakfast at my cousin's house. His dad came in and broke the news. I thought it was a joke at first. I cried.

[–]Blanderman 49 points50 points ago

He died while my family and I were in Grand Cayman. We heard the news the day before we went to Stingray City.

[–]amazinraisin1 39 points40 points ago

The stingrays of Stingray City are non-murderous and peace-loving, but they'll photobomb the shit out of you.

[–]CodyWiedenbein 37 points38 points ago

The day he died, I heard people talking about it on IRC, I thought they were joking, then more people started to bring up his death and out of curiosity I finally looked it up and ended up crying for the rest of the night, the dude was my childhood hero.

[–]Tannon34 25 points26 points ago

Happy birthday son, a great man you will never live to match just died

[–]Cocaine4You 17 points18 points ago

He died on the same day as my fathers death. September 5 2006. Loved them both.

[–]ohnothing 15 points16 points ago

I saw it on the news and cried for hours, since meeting him was one of my childhood dreams.

Also, later in the day, the shitty rock radio station I listened to played "Bittersweet Symphony" in his honor, so now I am awkwardly moved to tears by that song every time.

[–]stblack 26 points27 points ago

Steve's obituary in The Economist may be one of the best ever.

http://www.economist.com/node/7879983

[–]georgetownhoya 11 points12 points ago

Strange that the Economist says he "managed to pull the barb out, but not fast enough." Numerous experts think he may have survived if he hadn't torn the barb out at all.

Just as a general lesson: When you're stabbed with anything - a pencil, a knife, even a poisonous barb - it's often a good idea not to rip it back out. Go to the emergency room. Otherwise you will almost certainly damage things more than they were before. When that's your heart, it's game over.

[–]racamonkey 4 points5 points ago

wow, I can't believe that was 6 years ago.

[–]Bones_17 7 points8 points ago

What did you wish for when you blew out your candles...

[–]iToadstool 3 points4 points ago

I was out on a school field-trip. I was in grade six at the time.

We were on the bus coming home from the Melbourne Zoo. The bus driver was listening to the radio and we were all singing along. That is, until the music was interrupted by the news of Steve's death.

The rest of the bus ride was silent.

[–]mr_dragon 1289 points1290 points ago

As an Aussie, I never liked him. He was always this over the top wanker who made us Aussies look like idiots. That is until years after his death, I was sitting in a hotel room and ACTUALLY watched one of his shows for the first time because there was nothing better to watch. All it took was 30mins to make me realise how fucking ignorant I had been. I had just jumped on the hateful bandwagon because it was "cool" (see Beiber, Nickelback etc.) He was one of the most genuine blokes out there who just fucking loved what he did. He loved every animal and the environment in general. Just a top bloke who is now sorely missed. Love ya Steve.

[–]hawkeyezzz 506 points507 points ago

I never really thought more or less of any Aussie because of Steve, I just always thought that he was one cool bloke.

[–]Roboticide 157 points158 points ago

Hell, if anything I thought more of Australians because of him. I mean, I know you can't really judge a country by how its celebrities act, but you can judge a country by who its celebrities are.

America has some good ones, sure, but we also have people like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, famous for no fucking reason and making our country look like shit. Then you have Australia, and sure, you have Hugh Jackman and all, but then their most famous is undoubtedly this outgoing, brave-as-balls conservationist that just wants to show how awesome his home country is, and later the rest of the world.

He was a terrific person and I think Australia lost a great spokesperson and representative that day.

[–]HotDogOpera 118 points119 points ago

"Famous for no fucking reason"...? Famous for exactly fucking reasons.

[–]MF_Kitten 20 points21 points ago

Meh, Paris was famous looong before the sex tape and stuff.

[–]ThrowtheDeepBall 2 points3 points ago

She was known among people who kept up with NYC's socialite world, but beyond that she really wasn't famous. For someone who reads things like TMZ 24/7 maybe, but the average American didn't have a clue who she was until her sex tape was released.

[–]MF_Kitten 28 points29 points ago

What's wrong with hugh jackman?!

[–]Thedarb 14 points15 points ago

I think he means we have massive Hollywood celebrities like Hugh Jackman, but but the celebrity most associated with Australia was Steve.

[–]Electrifired 17 points18 points ago

No one mention russel crowe..

[–]NeverfearforIishere 37 points38 points ago

Crowe is a kiwi...

[–]Anderz 12 points13 points ago

He doesn't look like a Hobbit to me...

[–]ElyseOreo 49 points50 points ago

When I was younger I always associated him to the Raise Reptiles near my home, I couldn't figure out why he was never the host of my birthday parties.

[–]MisterMasterIV 95 points96 points ago

I have never heard this said about him, it actually caught me a little off-guard. Is this a common sentiment to Aussies? I've never heard the word "idiot" even hinted at about Steve by anyone in the states, he makes the rest of the world WISH they were Australian.

[–]TooSubtle 72 points73 points ago

We don't have as many celebrities, or media showing our culture to the world.

Imagine if Hulk Hogan was the only internationally known American celebrity, and people associated that character with your culture/people. It wouldn't matter what the actual man was like, or his ambitions/goals/politics, it would probably still be a little irksome knowing the world thinks of you in that light.

[–]MisterMasterIV 16 points17 points ago

I definitely agree that would bother me, but I guess that's what I was looking for is a comparison. Like, I don't have any respect for Hulk Hogan as a man, I think his character is abrasive and as a person he annoys me. I just never saw any of that in Steve looking from the outside in, he seemed like someone you would want to be.

It's true that not many of your celebrities make it here. I do enjoy Sick Puppies though.

[–]verynayce 7 points8 points ago

The cultural cringe in Australia is particularly strong and combined with tall poppy syndrome, Steve was/is seen as somewhat of a drawback to our image. The majority though, myself included, love Steve and his message.

[–]Mister_Slick 35 points36 points ago

It was more common than you would think. He seemed to really cement the Australian stereotype and it grinded some gears, it really seemed like he was playing the stereotype up. It actually took me until his death to actually realise all the work he did to protect wildlife and how completely genuine he really was. I felt bad, and now I miss that crazy bastard.

[–]fornicationist 17 points18 points ago

Anyone else notice how many Mr.'s there are in this thread?

[–]funshinebear13 16 points17 points ago

yes...very common. I didn't mind him but I thought his over the top use of Aussie slang was really just there to make Americans like him. Hell I have lived here my whole life and have heard the term crickey used twice in real life in general conversation. All the other times people said it was to make fun of Steve Irwin.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points ago

He made me think ALL Aussies were bad asses. Everytime I talked to an Aussie I quietly said to myself, "I bet this guy wrestles some crocodiles...". Take it as a negative or a positive, but that guy sparked my interest in dangerous wildlife and life in general.

[–]JRSTIN 150 points151 points ago

Yeah....that being said, I still need some solid convincing to get me off the Bieber/Nickelback hate-train.

[–]coleosis1414 186 points187 points ago

Maybe not the most solid convincing in the world, but...

I don't know what reason there is to hate Nickelback. I'm not gonna go so far as to say they're GOOD, but the best way to describe Nickelback is aggressively average. To me, they're no better or worse than silence.

[–]Damaband41 72 points73 points ago

I've heard it said they are hated because they are good, but not good enough for their music to be loved by anyone, and not good enough to justify their massive success.

[–]SuperDestructo 99 points100 points ago

Welcome to 98% of Top 40 Music.

[–]jhphoto 14 points15 points ago

Also their lead singer is one of the most notorious cunts in the world.

[–]SlasherPunk 37 points38 points ago

Elaborate.

[–]KnifeFed 17 points18 points ago

Examples?

[–]securicorscares 14 points15 points ago

Average. That's the key word. I always hated them because they were average. Along with all that other crap back then like Saliva. I've always liked really heavy music but as I got older I learned to like different types of really good music. Nickleback is neither of those. It's almost like they try to be bland enough to be liked by everybody and that's what I hated so much about them.

[–]ebbomega 9 points10 points ago

Let me explain it this way:

There are two types of music I like:

  • Really really good music, because it's really really good.
  • Really really bad music, because it's fucking hilarious to make fun of.

What I DESPISE is mediocre, derivative, same-as-everybody-else music. Nickelback falls exactly into this category. And to top it off, it's played EVERYWHERE here in Canada. At first I was willing to blame it on the CRTC (who promotes mediocre stale sub-par music like Bryan Adams and Matthew Good through Canadian Content laws), but then I went to India, and I swear to his holy noodliness, when I went to my first restaurant in Bangalore, I heard Nickelback three fucking times in one sitting.

Their production value is great, which says to me that they have a lot of professionals working on their music. But it's sad because they just use so many simple power chords and Pachabel's-Canon-inspired progressions, and these become the ambassadors of Canadian music. It's sad when brilliant artists like Death From Above 1979 or Caribou get glossed over so easily internationally, whereas Nickelback and Deadmau5 are considered the best of Canada.

[–]crazyhorse45 30 points31 points ago

I think he made the Aussies look cooler if anything

EDIT: Spelling

[–]OldHickory 5 points6 points ago

He's my second favorite favorite Australian, right after Les "Bushtucker Man" Hiddins

[–]DoingTreeScience 132 points133 points ago

He's one of my childhood heros and the reason I'm becoming an ecologist. I remember watching his show when I was little and being so excited. RIP Steve. You were one of the good ones. I have high hopes for your daughter. She reminds me so much of you.

[–]Tannon34 61 points62 points ago

Steve Irwin, along with Pokemon, and Barney is all I remember from my first five years of life

[–]sleuth_hound 8 points9 points ago

I used to until I saw she was sucking the tit of 15 minutes. Terri Irwin has what's left of my heart after Steve died :( I thought I was going to cry when people actually started making jokes about him. I used to race off the school bus so I could turn on Animal Planet just to watch him... or Jeff Corwin.. mmm.

[–]69ingchipmunks07 375 points376 points ago

I’ve got to be careful. So, what I’m gonna do is sneak up on it and jam my thumb in its butthole.

[–]IamSnuggie[S] 155 points156 points ago

That wasn't his thumb...

[–]TheKingofPanclark 39 points40 points ago

As a UF student, I love this commercial. And as a human being, i also love this commercial

Why is it these things always point out people who post to pony subreddits?

[–]gaelicsteak 49 points50 points ago

Better yet, why are pony subreddits so successful?

[–]stferago 12 points13 points ago

I still can't figure out if people seriously enjoy My Little Pony or if it's just a huge joke.

[–]Commod0re 11 points12 points ago

Have you seen it? I was rather skeptical at first, but it's actually quite good. Disturbingly so, even.

[–]RafTheKillJoy 7 points8 points ago

Because My Little Pony: FiM

[–]stferago 29 points30 points ago

I don't even post to any of those... I think he just made all that up.

Gods damn you for making me laugh!

[–]You_Dont_Party 30 points31 points ago

I remember watching this a few months ago and thought 'Damn, he really did just seem like a good guy, who was really excited about what he did'.

[–]jasmus 57 points58 points ago

He was. I worked for him at Australia Zoo (before and after his death). Before I started working there I thought it was at least a bit of an act for the camera. The few times I spoke to him, he was no different to what I had seen on TV. Steve was crazy passionate about wildlife, and I'll never forget the day I was at work and read on Digg that my boss had died, then walking outside and seeing some of our staff in tears answering the tourist's questions.

[–]You_Dont_Party 6 points7 points ago

I'm really, really happy to hear this about him. He seemed like the type who legitimately loved what he does, and knew the antics were mostly just to garner viewers, but I'm glad that he was that way from those around him.

[–]bowieinu1 14 points15 points ago

I was in a kids hospital the nurses turned off all the TVA so kids don't see the news alert

[–]bobvideo 13 points14 points ago

A couple of days ago, I was sitting in the United Red Carpet SFO club. There was a mom with two kids sitting next to me. Her son kept showing her dinosaurs on his computer. She was excited with every one of them. Her daughter was talking about a business they needed to be involved with. The young boy was wearing little Blunies. Then I realized, it was the Irwin's. She is the most incredible mother I have ever seen. I told them this and Bindi said "yes, we have the best mother there is". It brought tears to my eyes.

[–]dingermv09 39 points40 points ago

This girl I went to high school was without a doubt Steve Irwin's number one fan. Her license plate said Crikey, and when Steve passed away she missed school for 2 days then threw a chair in the lunchroom the first day back when someone made fun of her.

[–]genjutsu01 20 points21 points ago

This is something that really pisses me off.

This man showed no fear in the face of nature, which is the most powerful force on the planet, this man was nature incarnate.

The largest crocodile, the most deadly tarantula or snake, this guy would walk on over and pick that motherfucker up and show that shit to us.

In all of the perilous situations he has been in, bites, falls, limb breaks, even getting bit in the face on camera by a snake, what is it that finally does him in? An animal you can pet at fucking seaworld.

That is the equivalent of Evil Kneivel dying because he choked on a peanut.

Steve deserved better.

[–]Rivtron89 8 points9 points ago

We all deserve death and it can happen at any time. He was lucky enough to die doing what he loved.

[–]BradleyGT 20 points21 points ago

I'm 31 years old and I still wear a Wildlife Warriors nylon bracelet that they made right after his death to support his foundation. I've probably had my wedding ring off more times than I have this bracelet.

My wife and I actually sent he and his family a wedding invitation (we live in Texas btw) hoping that maybe we'd get the surprise of a lifetime. Didn't happen, but I ain't even mad.

This guy was a true hero. I wish I could contribute even half of what he did to helping this planet.

[–]drgradus 14 points15 points ago

[–]Parrotshake 5 points6 points ago

I was working at a newspaper in Brisbane when he died and was sitting eating lunch in the cafeteria when a colleage came marching over and just blurted out 'Steve Irwin is dead'. Quite the shock. Then they explained the details they had been given so far, that it was a stingray barb through the heart, and I was sure we had been given some bad information. I mean, how implausible is that? Everybody sitting around the office for the next 45 mins or so hoping it was a hoax or a bad source until we got some confirmation. That was a pretty crummy day.

[–]Tannon34 11 points12 points ago

In one episode he finds this snake and says "this snake is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world" he then proceeds to mess with until it bites him, he reacts by saying, "it's okay I've never had reaction to this snakes venom before" You here that? He's been bit by one of those before, as in more than once!

[–]yourgirlsrealbf 1 point2 points ago

It still hurts to see his beautiful face

[–]Nomadpeninsula 2 points3 points ago

Oh, the bitter irony. Steve was a wild spirit who centered his life around interacting with wild reptiles as if they were his own children. His death by a stingray seems like an inadequate death for Steve. If he had to go out, he should've gone out...IN STYLE!

I love Steve Irwin. I remember he rescued this poor crocodile out of this awful pool of rubbish and gave him a nice new home. Gone too soon.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DOWNVOTES?

[–]Aeras4109 2 points3 points ago

The only man I will ever accept to wear short shorts like that.

RIP Steve. We miss ya, mate.

Go Gators!

[–]freezway 6 points7 points ago

I too saw the Steve Irwin thread.

[–]Germankipp 10 points11 points ago

What makes this better is not only the fact that I love and grew up with Steve Irwin, but I am now a student at the University of Florida

[–]dreadnaughtfla 14 points15 points ago

Go gators!

[–]modern_warfare_1 5 points6 points ago

R.I.P. Steve. Much, much love.

Has it really been six years?

I've seen this way too often on here but I miss him too much to downvote

When i was a young lad, I'd go around barefoot in our backyard, catching snakes, frogs, and the occasional snapping turtle. This man was my childhood. I feel bad for our current generation.

the only time I have ever been truly saddened by a celebrity's death.

[–]Submariner688 2 points3 points ago

This made me smile when I don't want to smile. Thanks for posting.

Without clicking, I instantly thought of him.

+1 for my uncle being billy Donovan and go gators

[–]1thenumber 2 points3 points ago

I've never seen a group of men cry, until the night my friends and I found out Steve Irwin passed. The fact that he exuded love and respect for all living things, and was able to transfer that love to common people across a television signal was a true gift.

[–]justsick825 1 point2 points ago

Steve was my first childhood hero. He was always so enthusiastic and his love for nature and what he did came through in a way that inspired people everywhere, including myself. May he rest in peace. I could only dream of impacting the world in a way as beautiful as he did.

My childhood hero!

[–]xavirodz 1 point2 points ago

This man was my hero as a kid. He made me fall in love with nature and wildlife and now I'm currently getting my Biology degree. I think it's safe to say that he highly influenced my field of study. I remember watching his shows every morning on the weekends as a child in the living room of my grandparents' run down trailer house, in my underwear because we didn't have air conditioning and we lived in south Texas. I don't think I've ever felt so emotional over someone's death more than this guys. That's sad to say. I still miss him

[–]qwerty_fan 2 points3 points ago

Interesting fact is that Philippe Cousteau Jr, grandson of Jacques Cousteau, was on the boat when Steve got stung and tried to revive him for an hour

[–]smocciola 2 points3 points ago

Watching this made me sad.

[–]ThaDers 2 points3 points ago

its strange but his death affected more than any other celebrity death has by a factor of 1000

Edit: i love those espn commercials

[–]GabbiKat 2 points3 points ago

Sad that I miss him so much now that this was posted. Even more sad that so many people down voted.

[–]eselpi 2 points3 points ago

My family made a trip to Australia back in 2000 that was inspired by this guy. Went to the Australia zoo among many other places. Amazing experience. He is very sorely missed.
