For me it's not empathy, I guess I just like a joke when it's more classically constructed. 'Look at this funny thing that happens' I just don't find very funny. But a true 'joke' in terms of the build up, twist and a punchline to end it, I often do find funny.

In this case, it isn't really the subject matter that makes it unfunny for me, it's the construction.

If a man falls down a well, it's a little bit amusing. But if a man steals candy from a child, laughs remorselessly, and falls down a well, it's funny. If he's laughing so hard he can't see where he's going and the kid doesn't stop him from walking into the well, it's even funnier.
