Great game, started playing it again last week.

[–]HyruleanHero1988 0 points1 point ago

Sup?

[–]WombatDominator 21 points22 points ago

I actually did a geology report on Mt Rainier last week. You guys are up shit creek if that goes off.

[–]Ralphio 24 points25 points ago

I used to go to one of the highschools in closest vecinity to that mountain. A beautiful view almost everyday of my life, but the 'Lahar drills' we had to do were a chilling reminder that one day, if it feels like it, it would bury us all in the blink of an eye and we'd be lucky to even hear the alarm (which sounds like an air raid siren) and kiss our asses goodbye before getting buried by a wall of mud and trees and debri traveling 200mph down the valley we lived in. During the drill everyone was supposed to leave the school, and literally travel on foot to the nearest high ground. We have 'Volcano escape routes' marked all throughout the town I grew up in. Talk about an eerie sound when that alarm went off :/

If it goes off, alot of Western Washington would be fucked.

[–]tobes2us 2 points3 points ago

I lived directly across the street from one of the Lahar sirens in Orting. When it went off on it's monthly drill, it'd wake me up feeling like an air raid was going off. I moved out of Orting and never looked back.

[–]SirBeefy 0 points1 point ago

If I had to guess, I'd say that you probably lived in the Orting/Sumner area.

[–]stanfan114 6 points7 points ago

I see Rainier every morning driving to work. This is such a beautiful place.

So, will Seattle get destroyed too?

[–]hobaggg 6 points7 points ago

No, it's mainly just the towns and cities at the base of the mountain and down the lahar pathways. Check out this map for reference: http://www.geotimes.org/apr04/RainierMap.jpg Seattle is too far away. It may get some ash depending on the wind, and a lot of the ash and debris that floats down the many rivers will end up in the Sound and around Seattle, but nothing dangerous.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 3 points4 points ago

Seattle is too far away.

Yes and no, you need to overlay the population map with that lahar flow map, you'll find that Tacoma is dead center on the yellow lahar where it meets Puget Sound. Puylup and the surrounding cities would be wiped out along with most of Tacoma.

Edit: I've included two images for you to see what I'm talking about (pay attention to the areas in the red circles)

population and lahar map

You'll notice that the area's I've circled in red are geographically identical...meaning Tacoma is fucked and Seattle could be too if Mt.Rainer blows.

[–]refriedbeans16 0 points1 point ago

They have been telling us that it will be worse than St. Helens since I was in 2nd grade. It is supposed to be dormat.

[–]WombatDominator 9 points10 points ago

Rainier? Rainier's the most active volcano in the US. It's well over due if you go by patterns. The thing that's most scary about Rainier is the amount of glaciers on the mountain. I think there's 24, could be wrong, but if it blows all the debris will run into the rivers surrounding it. Lahar warnings are available, but depending how far you are from the mountain there's pretty much no way out quickly. It will be a huge catastrophe.

[–]manbetrayedbyhismind 0 points1 point ago

We also live near a fault-line, could be big cluster fuck if we get hit by a volcanic eruption, earthquake, and a tsunami...They need to make a movie on this, or have they?

[–]BYoungNY 2 points3 points ago

Every time this is posted, this is the inevitable response.

[–]rockincooldude 2 points3 points ago

To be fair this has been a bad year on the mountain death-wise. It's unfortunate.

[–]MAXX1up 4 points5 points ago

Double Death Mountain more like.

[–]remoravox 1 point2 points ago

I came here just to see this comment.

[–]Aviator8989 1 point2 points ago

Considering Ranier is still an active volcano, this is quite accurate.

[–]GhostSniper018 0 points1 point ago

The only reason I came to the comments section was to like this once I found it.

[–]jaheiner 0 points1 point ago

CAme here just for this comment or some king dodongo reference lol, up vote for you!

[–]Styrafoam 0 points1 point ago

Came here to post that. GRRRR

[–]addyrambles 0 points1 point ago

Way to post exactly what I was going to post before I could post what I was going to post.

[–]Crazy_G1raffe 0 points1 point ago

my friend's adopted dad died on this mountain a few years ago.

[–]i_care_about_karma 58 points59 points ago

[–]dagoff 43 points44 points ago

Yeah, total bullshit. It's been rainy and overcast all day here.

[–]snowpony 4 points5 points ago

This was what I came to say haha... Definitely not taken today, though I've seen that same view many times and it is beautiful every time :)

[–]wijet 2 points3 points ago

More like for the last 10 days, and forever-more

[–]Montarded 4 points5 points ago

Yeah it was also the cover to an Infamous String Dusters Album

[–]eduardj 0 points1 point ago

Every top comment has something to do with Death Mountain.

[–]quirkelchomp 4 points5 points ago

Well someone has got to appease to Volvagia...

[–]Time_and_Temp 4 points5 points ago

Oh no! Fooled again. Pretty, though.

[–]MonicledOctopus 2 points3 points ago

I thought I've seen this picture before.

And isn't it raining today? I suppose it doesn't have to be raining at the mountain though...

[–]Colie1388 23 points24 points ago

Bluegrass band called the infamous Stringdusters have this as one of their album covers. Not sure if anyone else out there recognizes it. A great band and great guys.

[–]Kaiuk 5 points6 points ago

Love me some stringdusters. Silver Sky is quality

[–]SrDigbyChickenCaesar 3 points4 points ago

First thing I thought of, too. Link to the album: http://music.thestringdusters.com/album/silver-sky

[–]im_at_home_now 2 points3 points ago

Can't wait for that show.

[–]MrFalcon 2 points3 points ago

Rocket to the silver sky...

[–]DrBenPhD 3 points4 points ago

Came here to say this, great band, great photo.

[–]kingebeneezer 0 points1 point ago

Oooh yes. Recognized that in a heartbeat. I got excited thinking I'd be the only one to notice. Then I just laughed to myself and said it's the friggin Stringduster's, SOMEBODY else definitely recognizes this too. Quick Ctrl+f proved right.

[–]SpookyAlmond 9 points10 points ago

Orographic lifting if anyone is interested.

[–]OhHaiMarc 2 points3 points ago

I'm interested, but what does that mean exactly?

[–]TroubadourCeol 27 points28 points ago

Getting pretty sick of this being posted literally every week.

[–]Watts_Minor 12 points13 points ago

Ah the Pacific Northwest, where even the mountains are rainier.

[–]ChuckCharles420 7 points8 points ago

"Double lenticular cloud all the way!"

[–]dannykboy 7 points8 points ago

[–]dannykboy 3 points4 points ago

[–]seethruyou 6 points7 points ago

This wasn't taken any time in the last month, that's for sure.

Hey, that reminds me of the classic Seattle joke:

If you can see Mt. Rainier, it's going to rain. If you can't see Mt. Rainier, it is raining.

[–]EnragedFetus 21 points22 points ago

That was not today . . . Proof!

On second thought: its only 4 pm, how did you get a picture of the sunset?

[–]SamVegas 11 points12 points ago

Damn time travelers

[–]rydrid 1 point2 points ago

If youre on the west side of the mountain, thats how it looks like in the morning. I loved going on runs at dawn to see the sun catching the mountain on fire.

[–]Shane_the_P 2 points3 points ago

I know that sure as shit wasn't today. It's been rainy and cloudy all day.

[–]Allokit 10 points11 points ago

This was NOT taken today. Today sucked with rain and wind and 48 degrees.

[–]Ken_Mcnutt 2 points3 points ago

god i wish i got that view from here in Seattle. -___-

[–]Slnt666 4 points5 points ago

Lest anyone think this happened recently, we haven't seen the sun in two months here. It been Raining for at least 3 weeks straight

[–]Waffleman75 2 points3 points ago

It's been raining longer than that

[–]Phelnoth 3 points4 points ago

Look, it's the kind of clouds that people call UFOs.

[–]okiedawg 2 points3 points ago

I grew up within view of Mt. Rainier and my grandmother repeatedly told me that those clouds were aliens watching us. She also claims to have seen bigfoot.

[–]jfawcett 12 points13 points ago

Washington state is a shithole. You definitely should never even consider moving here. Seriously it sucks and you would hate it.

[–]Marauder777 14 points15 points ago

As a resident of the Pacific NW, I concur. Please do not ever consider moving here. Unless you are really hot.

[–]seethruyou 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, stay away. Please.

[–]CaspianCobalt 0 points1 point ago

But I like it here...

[–]jfawcett 5 points6 points ago

Quiet you.

[–]frotorious 3 points4 points ago

Hey! Listen! There's something strange about that cloud over Death Mountain.

[–]Silversteinburg 1 point2 points ago

Looks like the first half of Zelda OOT, or was it the second half?

[–]atfarley 1 point2 points ago

This is not how it looked today in the NW!

[–]trd2000gt 1 point2 points ago

false it rained today

[–]StacksOfBudahhh 1 point2 points ago

Chief! Truth is heading through The Ark!

[–]aveydey 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful shot of Rainier.

[–]joshykins 0 points1 point ago

When I was importing/exporting cars across the border from the Vancouver area to Seattle, Enumclaw and Puyallup, that Mt. Rainier was always my favorite sight.

[–]Ralphio 1 point2 points ago

The best view of that mountain is from farther away, just after you crest the hill at the top of Highway 410 in Bonney Lake :) In reality, this shot doesn't even do this mountain justice.

[–]ducky6 0 points1 point ago

Today they did the monthly Lahar test here in Puyallup. We're far enough up the hill that we'll be ok if it blows, but wow will that be exciting.

[–]Gorilla6391 1 point2 points ago

This is a pretty good attempt to get people to come to the NW. But I know that you really just need sacrifices for your Sasquachian overlords...

[–]IrrelephantInTheRoom -1 points0 points ago

Looks like Goku is charging up again

[–]bystandling 0 points1 point ago

AAAAH. I'm only across the state and I miss my view :'(

[–]theeightfoldwrath 1 point2 points ago

I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.

[–]3danimator 0 points1 point ago

I've seen lots of pictures of these clouds and t hey are all amazing, but i would REALLY like to see one taken from the summit when these clouds are overhead....That could be interesting

[–]b3b456de 0 points1 point ago

CL: Do you think the humans noticed us?

DL: No, my brother, I don't think they did.

[–]atfarley 1 point2 points ago

...and, this looks like you're from Tacoma. If so, there hasn't been a beautiful day in Tacoma... EVER.

[–]ohpeeum 0 points1 point ago

[–]MrDoofus 0 points1 point ago

funny, I had the strange compulsion to build this mountain out of mashed potatoes yesterday. Maybe I'l give it a visit.

[–]tamnoswal 0 points1 point ago

I tried to put on a contact lens without noticing that it had a single grain of sand on it. It felt like this picture looks.

[–]Olibra 0 points1 point ago

[–]scshadow -1 points0 points ago

[–]Milkman219 0 points1 point ago

They kind of look like those little toys you used to turn inside out and set on the floor or table and then they would "pop" like 10 feet in up the air.

[–]Hobo_Knife 0 points1 point ago

<3 My backyard.

[–]xAppleofEden -1 points0 points ago

This picture is complete BS. Its been on Google images for years.

[–]kelsofb 1 point2 points ago

I grew up in Olympia and I remember the Native American tribes would come and speak to us in grade school and they said that when the mountain has clouds like that above it's going to rain within 24 hours. I always thought about that fact when I saw those kinds of clouds but I don't think it ever proved true. Did it rain today?

[–]Wampa_On3 0 points1 point ago

Yo dawg, I heard you like clouds.

[–]NolanMcCoy 1 point2 points ago

Repost, repost, repost...

[–]jschubart 0 points1 point ago

Wish I looked out the window a few hours ago to see this. I see nothing but darkness now. :(

[–]jconway2002 1 point2 points ago

Lenticular clouds...

I recently learned about these while studying for my private pilot certificate. Living in Southern California I didn't think any of that damn weather material they made me study would ever benefit me...I guess I was wrong. (...as i get down voted)

[–]southpaw75 0 points1 point ago

Its pictures like that that make me miss Seattle. Anyone need an IT guy?

[–]mdwvt 0 points1 point ago

One of the most stunning mountains I've ever seen. I've been at the bottom of Queen Anne Ave several times and seen Mt. Rainier and it was always so breathtaking. The view of it from Kerry Park was pretty effing spectacular too.

[–]D3FEATER 0 points1 point ago

Once you slay the dragon that goes away.

I miss seeing this everyday in Enumclaw

[–]ActionBoomTown 0 points1 point ago

[–]HAsash -1 points0 points ago

it's nice that you didn't pile ten more clouds on top on the photoshop.

[–]trojancell 1 point2 points ago

that's pretty cool. I learned about this when i started flying. They are known as lenticular clouds and obviously the wave length of red light causes the red colour. That's amazing for flying

[–]mapkinase 0 points1 point ago

One day you will hear the last Chopper Dave's report... because of this mountain of years.

[–]Spants23 0 points1 point ago

[–]trippyelephants 0 points1 point ago

The earth is under attack!!! i knew aliens existed!!

[–]Snowdart -1 points0 points ago

That sure wasn't taken today.

[–]lukeod 1 point2 points ago

Glider pilot here.

Lenticular cloud, caused by a standing wave called a "Lee wave".

Glider pilots who fly in the mountains love to see these lennies, as they indicate that a Lee wave has formed and shows where it is. If you are able to contact the wave, there is typically large, strong areas of lift (5-10 knots vertical) that extend up to 50,000 feet.

These types of Lee waves are how altitude records are set In gliders, with the current record being over 50,000 feet.

[–]CaptCollier 0 points1 point ago

I did not know the Cascades were Jewish?

[–]Arkanist 0 points1 point ago

Us locals consider this a prophecy of rain to come in the next day. Of course it is sort of a self fulfilling prophecy, considering the state.

[–]alBROgge 0 points1 point ago

[–]GAU8Avenger 0 points1 point ago
