We have machines to do all theses things because there's no cheaper way to do it, and, well, rubber gloves are pretty cheap...

[–]nextInt 47 points48 points ago

I would be willing to pay significantly more to not be fingered in my butt

[–]nixle 50 points51 points ago

Yet here we are

[–]dalgeek 8 points9 points ago

So, a couple grand for an MRI, or $0.05 for a rubber glove? Guess which one your insurance will cover!

[–]jijbentpasraar 1 point2 points ago

MRI scan is more like 100€.

[–]dalgeek 4 points5 points ago

Not in the United States. Probably a minimum of $1000.

[–]zivarah 2 points3 points ago

Depends on the exact procedure. Some basic MRIs are pretty cheap, but depending on the part of body/use of contrast dyes/some other stuff that I really don't know much about, they can be quite pricey.

Source: Had an MRI, saw the bill, died a little inside.

[–]Chicago31 1 point2 points ago

100€

So yeah, about a couple grand these days.

[–]FlashByNature 9 points10 points ago

Speak for yourself

[–]PaidAmateur 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure some people would say the opposite.

[–]kochipoik 0 points1 point ago

Trust me dude, doctors don't like doing it either.

[–]snowlion18 0 points1 point ago

i was just asking the other day to someone, out of all the branches of medicine, who chooses to be a proctologist?

[–]ageerhead 0 points1 point ago

"Cheaper" probably isn't the best reason not to use modern equipment... I'm pretty sure it's still done manually because there isn't a practical way to do it better yet. I was told by a professor that worked on imaging machines (all sorts, not just x-ray) that the reason they don't use x-ray machines is because the prostate material looks almost identical to the surrounding flesh on an x-ray image, so there's no way to tell if the prostate is abnormal.

[–]trebory6 1 point2 points ago

what about some sort of dye that can be used?

[–]ageerhead 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm... good point. Google says that that's used in some cases. I guess it would just be too impractical/invasive for a yearly checkup sort of thing.

[–]Foolish_mortal_ 0 points1 point ago

CT scans can clearly show enlarged prostates; http://www.sciencephoto.com/media/295905/view

It really is a cost/time efficiency thing, you're not going to refer every man who's worried about his prostate for a CT scan because it's not economical or practical, and you're wasting his and your time. You're also exposing him to unnecessary radiation if you do this multiple times over his lifetime.

You could also use ultrasound imaging: http://www.ultrasound-images.com/prostate.htm

Which would avoid the radiation risk, but is still an inefficient screening test.

You would want to use both of these tests to assess and enlarged prostate, but only once you've already confirmed that there is a problem.

I do feel obliged to point out I am currently studying in the UK so perhaps our priorities are different here but cost effectiveness is an important part of medical practice. That said, prostate exams are still performed digitally even in the US so...

[–]midnitewarrior 81 points82 points ago

You should be relieved to know that this procedure is now done digitally.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rectal_exam

[–]redlinezo6 62 points63 points ago

That was horribly misleading... Butt, accurate.

[–]smurphatron 20 points21 points ago

That's not how you spell "but" . . . I think you just went and made an ass of yourself.

[–]Yarxing 16 points17 points ago

I think you just made a pun, but I just can't put my finger in it.

[–]Imhereforthebooze 12 points13 points ago

This is a pretty shitty attempt at a pun thread.

[–]JavaMoose 8 points9 points ago

You guys are really pulling these puns out of your ass.

[–]Mr_faptastic12 8 points9 points ago

Looks like this thread is ending. What a bummer.

[–]Lanny0 3 points4 points ago

these puns are all hanus

[–]legodarthvader 6 points7 points ago

Now that's just forcing it in.

[–]ReignOfTerror 5 points6 points ago

Don't be so anal about it.

[–]usethekarmaLuke 5 points6 points ago

why?

[–]JediGameFreak 0 points1 point ago

60 seconds!? Jesus why does it take so long?

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 1 point2 points ago

Oh digital as in... with your finger... or a digit.

It took me far too long to figure that out.

[–]NaturalDeity 399 points400 points ago

My friend, it's pretty clear to me that you just scrolled down the the 37th most popular post of all time in /r/funny and resubmitted it with the exact same name. I... I'm at a loss. If karma-whoring is your goal, you simply must know that whoring reposts for karma is literally the most useless thing you can do with yourself. It doesn't gain you love. It doesn't gain you money. It doesn't even give the fake respect of your fellow redditors. You are wasting your life. I come here to laugh, extend my life. You, you come to lessen the meaning of yourself as an original person. Don't ask me to understand, because I just can't. You have no purpose. Go make love. For everyone's sake, just do something useful. I worked all day on a Saturday and partied all night with my friends, you karma-whored. Think about where this will take you. And go the other way.

[–]lordeirias 45 points46 points ago

How dare you accuse OP of taking the 37th most popular post and resubmitting it with the same name.....

OP removed that useless period. They "Medical advances" not "Medical advances." which makes all the difference in the world.

[–]spinky342 11 points12 points ago

OP was tagged as reposting cunt. Makes sense.

[–]Thameus 11 points12 points ago

Well if you're gonna berate the guy, can you save us a couple of page loads and link to the original while you're doing it? Edit: or we can wait for karmadecay...

I told a joke to 5 people the other day. One of them said "That's an old joke", while the others, who hadn't heard it before, thought it was pretty funny.

I made some people smile, which is never a useless thing.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago

But if you persistently re-told jokes every day then everyone would have eventually heard the joke.

[–]Eternity42Immensity 25 points26 points ago

The problem here is when he tells a joke to 5 people who all say "we've heard it" there are about 10,000 people behind them who chuckle and give a thumbs up and say nothing more.

This happens every time he tells the joke.

[–]BunsTown 3 points4 points ago

I do that IRL. Re-tell the same bad jokes over and over. It's part of the joke.

[–]sir_perderder 5 points6 points ago

I literally never pass up the opportunity to respond to "did you get a haircut" with "no I got them all cut". That shit is just too funny.

[–]Erosion010 0 points1 point ago

What time is it?

TIME FOR YOU TO GET A WATCH. It gets funnier the louder you scream it.

[–]harrywhite1 0 points1 point ago

Shit I honestly never heard that before.

[–]Captainpatch 1 point2 points ago

And... That's a good thing?

[–]1m0a1L -3 points-2 points ago

Unfortunately that is completely impossible to gauge as new people come here everyday, and its not a constant stream of the same people... So there will always be the potential of no one seeing it.

[–]knightwhosaysSi 0 points1 point ago

This again. Reddit is not a compilation of jokes of all times (not supposed to be at least). It's a community, whose purpose is to provide new content and links to it's users. You are relatively new here? That's cool. Go to top/all time and have a good laugh at things other people enjoyed year or two ago - nothing bad about it. I suppose anyone can handle this neat trick - no need to post same links again and again. Shit like this really degrades value of certain subreddits, /r/funny at most, and thereby community as a whole.

[–]alienelement 7 points8 points ago

37? In a row?

/r/funny

[–]Spliffa 2 points3 points ago

His posting history is a very sad read. Poor soul, lost in karma whoring.

[–]pyramidbread 3 points4 points ago

To me, it looks like you care more about karma than OP, just saying.

[–]redlinezo6 7 points8 points ago

Nay, fellow redditor...

Its not about the karma... Its about the content...

Much like a politician, some people try to tell us what we want to hear. Many indulge them, so we end up hearing the same thing over and over. What we really want, is a new story, a new plan, something to change us, change the world...

Instead... We see the same gif of a cat sitting like a human, looking depressed...

[–]1m0a1L -4 points-3 points ago

We yes, but the fresh reddit hatchlings maybe not... the genius of the thumbnail is that you will know its a repost you can see, rather than wasting time bitching about it and being a sassy sally just on to the next post, you waste more time accomplishing nothing by bitching about lack of OC than you do enjoying the site.

Edit: Capitalization and * being

[–]MWozz 0 points1 point ago

Sucks that /r/funny doesn't have thumbnails

[–]drinkalone 0 points1 point ago

Relax, Ive been on this site for a long time, never saw this before, made me actually laugh out loud. Get over it. Its going to happen.

[–]userSNOTWY -1 points0 points ago

Look man, there are hundreds of thousands of people that use reddit, reposts are bound to happen...If then that thing makes it to the front page, it can only mean that enough people found it funny. What's the problem with re-seeing something if you know that a lot of other people enjoyed it. If you get so angry over the idea of karma whoring it means that you yourself think karma is important...You must look beyond that, and appreciate the fact that the majority of viewers either enjoyed it, didn't care or were indifferent to the fact it was a repost... [sorry about the rant]

[–]jlow56 1 point2 points ago

I understand where you are coming from, but he reposts his own links about 2-4 times within the same week! These aren't accidents.

[–]medicinalkfc -1 points0 points ago

No one gives a shit if he karma whores. How about you stop wasting your own and everyone else's time by pointing out that OP is a faggot.

[–]barnosaur 1 point2 points ago

I have OP tagged as 'reposting cunt,' so the pattern fits your characterization

[–]Polyether 1 point2 points ago

This user is only a few notches below /u/pepsi_next when it comes to reposting content. The two of them are vastly contributing to the downfall of reddit, you should tag them both and downvote every single thing they submit, preferably in new before it gets to the front and it's too late.

[–]Kr0nos -1 points0 points ago

What about writing extensive paragraphs bitching about reposts for 'karma'? Does it literally get you love? Literally?

[–]TheSaddestGrape -2 points-1 points ago

PR companies will pay people to set up credible accounts on social networking sites. Then these accounts can post headlines like "look what company X did for me and how awesome it is" and the account will look fairly normal to both the spam filters and the users.

[–]IByrdl 2 points3 points ago

How is this relevant at all?

[–]DougMelvin 0 points1 point ago

That's what the Karma is for. To little Karma, too few posts and folks assume it's just a PR monkey. 6 months, thousands of Karma AND a story about what the nice company did for them and folks will eat it up.

Also; too little karma and you can't post/comment very often without getting that red "you are doing that too much" message

[–]thehollowman84 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't say it's the most useless thing you can do. Writing posts about how useless karma is, seems more useless.

[–]OriginalityPolice -3 points-2 points ago

That was beautiful.

Honestly you sound like a bitter old man, I have seen this before many many times, and sure it's a repost I even upvoted your comment but really it seems like you have less of a life than OP by doing background research to call him out on a useless post. I am sick and tiered of reposts but i am even more sick and tiered of people like you who go around shitting on someone about the repost, I have probably done it myself as you are probably going to look at my history and get all butt hurt but i also realize it accomplishes nothing and for OP maybe it is OC.

[–]Skilol -2 points-1 points ago

I understand when you complain about reposts when OP makes it look like it was original/their own content. I also understand when you point out that something is a repost without complaining about it.

But what you do here, crying about a repost that never stated it was selfmade, is not only annoying but also against the rediquette.

[–]lopzag -3 points-2 points ago

Not everyone has seen every post submitted to reddit ever you know, OP may have simply stumbled upon it him/herself and just wanted to share.

[–]sturg1dj 2 points3 points ago

I see you are new to reddit. If you look at darkreef2 's posts you will see they are nearly all reposts and he/she admits to it.

edit: You have apparently been here as long as me...so I guess you just haven't noticed.

[–]Sc2RuinedMyLife 12 points13 points ago

it's not pleasant for the doctor too

i've had guys hit on me before i do a prostate exam, and also make unnecessarily sexual noises

i'm a dude

i've also had straight guys get boners then apologize repeatedly and emphasize that they're not gay

[–]kycube 4 points5 points ago

I'm gay and I don't like prostate exams. Who finds that kind of weirdness enjoyable?

[–]snowlion18 0 points1 point ago

because gay guys like things being up their asshole

[–]noseparade 3 points4 points ago

and yet here we are

[–]snowlion18 0 points1 point ago

are you a proctologist or a general doctor?

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points ago

I have you tagged as "Serial Reposter." You're living up to your tag quite well.

[–]free4all87 3 points4 points ago

Hey, me too! This guy does not disappoint.

[–]Ehns0mnyak 7 points8 points ago

Dear science, please correct this before I'm 40. Thanks.

[–]Flopsey 9 points10 points ago

Yup, can't complain about the rising costs of medicine AND complain there isn't a machine to do something that can be accomplished with a single finger.

[–]Joliet_Jake_Blues 18 points19 points ago

When it says 2011 in it, that means it is old. If it is old, it's probably been posted here a bunch of times.

[–]Todd_the_Wraith 5 points6 points ago

37th most popular post on /r/funny

[–]jlow56 5 points6 points ago

Down vote everything from darkreef2. He reposts almost EVERYTHING he submits.

[–]evelyncanarvon 6 points7 points ago

You can get an MRI if that's what you prefer and you have an extra $3000 lying around.

[–]DrScottyB 10 points11 points ago

I'm thinking about reposting this tomorrow.

You should just count yourself lucky if you don't have a vagina. There are much worst things to be done at a doctor than a simple finger in the ass.

[–]SeskaLien 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, and guys don't have to worry about this until they hit 40. We ladies get the pleasure of getting "manual" exams and instruments shoved inside us yearly once we're teenagers or so.

[–]Stormdancer 1 point2 points ago

Getting this test done by the machines would cost thousands of dollars.

The bum down on the corner will do it for $5.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Down vote this reposting faggot that is op.

[–]pumpmar 0 points1 point ago

that doesnt sound nearly as bad as what a pap smear is

[–]KalashNicoff 0 points1 point ago

Don't care if it was a repost. I've never seen it before and it made me laugh.

[–]phoenixrawr 1 point2 points ago

  1. Open http://www.reddit.com/r/funny

  2. Select the top tab (here's a screenshot if you can't find it)

  3. Peruse a few links at your convenience. Now you've seen it and we can move on with our lives.

But what if I don't spend all my time on Reddit?, you may be asking.

No fear! These links rarely change. You can come back any time you like and find them in nearly the exact same order you left them. This fantastic mechanism allows you to see the content that /r/funny has found truly worthy in the past without requiring it to be reposted all the time!

[–]KennyKivail 1 point2 points ago

Please stop reposting this. I know it's against reddiquette to complain, but seriously. Stahp.

[–]Dekar173 1 point2 points ago

Within the picture itself it tells you the picture is old. Fuck I hate you.

[–]SmartJ1337 0 points1 point ago

Like when Lasik tells me that they can't fix my vision because my eyes has nystagmus. Science can't stop an eye from shaking five seconds?

[–]kartoffeln514 0 points1 point ago

It costs a lot less money to put on a rubber glove than it does to run a huge machine that costs tens of thousands of dollars to purchase.

[–]910freeze 1 point2 points ago

It's 2012

[–]lambs0623 0 points1 point ago

I like this, but it's a repost.

[–]Pykoh 0 points1 point ago

Would you rather have tube that wriggles around to feel the approximate size of your prostate?

[–]onetimertony 1 point2 points ago

Why does the Pringles man have his finger up my ass?

[–]Jarl_Mason_The_Sly 0 points1 point ago

I wouldnt mind if it was a girl doing it. If your gonna have to get it checked at least have a woman do it instead of a man.

[–]claudesoph 0 points1 point ago

Now I have an erection...

[–]tricky3737 -3 points-2 points ago

That awkward feeling when you realize the doctor has his hands on your shoulders during your prostate exam.

[–]Ctrl_Alt_Delete_ 1 point2 points ago

I feel accomplished down voting all of his posts.

[–]oldtomfoolery 1 point2 points ago

Medical advances should be made to make medical advances. Not for your comfort. Spending millions to do something a finger can do in a few seconds is unnecessary.

[–]SeskaLien -1 points0 points ago

Making procedures like these more comfortable/less awkward for the patient will encourage more people to have them done, which could lead to things like earlier detection of cancer.

[–]KungFuHamster -1 points0 points ago

A doctor could have sex with a woman whose husband is infertile too, and yet they spend thousands of dollars for artificial insemination from random donors.

[–]northernwinds 1 point2 points ago

As a man nearing the dreaded Finger of Doom... I am surely going to ask around and see if any of them offer the ultrasound option :)

[–]GodEmperor 0 points1 point ago

If they do then they're quacks. Also, sorry to say but it would be a trans-rectal ultrasound.

[–]tpott 0 points1 point ago

Cheap, quick and safe. Besides, you know you like it, even if it's just a little...

[–]rprebel -1 points0 points ago

I can't fucking stand it. Had it done once in the ER, never again.

[–]ArthurMercer -1 points0 points ago

Why is the Pringles man sticking his fingers up people's asses?

[–]JerkoffJack -1 points0 points ago

That part where he says "roughly" and "approximate" in the same sentence makes me cringe every time I see this reposted.

[–]blabberingblab -1 points0 points ago

Really? The doctor had to have a mustache?

[–]Vincent_LeRoux -1 points0 points ago

It isn't that we don't have the machines, you could get an transrectal ultrasound.

[–]GodEmperor 0 points1 point ago

TRUS is a poor test for detection of prostate cancer. So is the rectal exam, but physical exam will always be at the heart of quality medical practice.

[–]iKickComputers 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the Cyanide and Happiness comic strips.
