And in that smoke is diamond dust. Seriously, look it up. Mind explosion

[–]spacebootsohno 36 points37 points ago

Not just diamonds, but all four known types of carbon.

Unfortunately the diamond particles are burned away in the process, and converted into carbon dioxide, but this will change the way we view a candle flame forever.

These 4 forms are only ALL present in the flame itself. The process still yields what you would expect from a combustion reaction.

This image depicts a candle after it has been blown out, which allows pre-combustion compounds to smolder and be aerosolized at sub-flashpoint temperatures. The particles that are suspended in candle smoke (AKA aerosol) are probably a wide variety of hydrocarbons along with amorphous carbon.

I understand some of those words.

What ones didn't you get? I could help you with them.

The big words were my favorite.

Technically, the diamond dust is in the flame. By the time it leaves the flame, it's been broken down to CO2. What you see in this picture is actually wax vapor, which is the fuel that actually burns in a candle. The wick is just there to heat the wax to the point of vaporizing, because solid/liquid wax does not burn. This is why you can light the smoke trail coming off of a snuffed out candle to re-light it.

Funnily enough, that gif also came from /r/woahdude.

That looked like it was a simple film with a black background, not high speed or anything.

[–]edjumication 2 points3 points ago

is that what we are seeing? are those tiny particles pictured diamond?

This is what the entire universe is like. Tiny particles making up a larger pattern which is repeated over and over and over again in slightly different variations, all of which come together to form an even larger pattern which itself is repeated.

[–]piuch 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure that's a lizard in disguise.

It's like a little dragonette...a snake being charmed out of a basket...a parrot...a parrot...a parrot being sketched in water colour...the spray from a waterfall...a star glalaxy...surgar coming out of a magical star. [7.44] [8.66666666666676777777777774] yes my precious. And now to the cheese.
