They're going to be pissed when they realize they forgot Frodo.

[–]You_Mirin 31 points32 points ago

Nope? I'd say hell yes! Look at that view!

[–]kingcropercake -5 points-4 points ago

I find the whole "NOPE" thing really annoying. This dude is doing something truly amazing, and instead of finding that inspiring, people feel the need to claim it is crazy, as if to justify their own pathetic lives. I aspire to live a life like this guy, not a life where everything is safe and planned and boring. Gah, rant over.

[–]thrush77 9 points10 points ago

I've always interpreted the NOPE as in "Thats not for me, I'm scared" ... that's how I feel with spider NOPE's

[–]PurdueJohn 12 points13 points ago

Tell that to the 200 bodies on Everest. People just have different opinions on risk and enjoyment. I think the OP has some respect for those two people, or he wouldn't have posted it.

[–]Kytro 1 point2 points ago

Some people like safe and boring. I wouldn't do that because I don't feel the risk is worth the reward, mostly because it's outside of my capabilities.

[–]lurkity_mclurkington 82 points83 points ago

That... is living. Challenging yourself in so many ways and seeing something in person that pictures would not fully capture. Claiming that victory so that on your deathbed you can say, "I fucking went there. I saw what few people ever will and experienced moments of excitement mixed with fear. I lived, without a regret of never having accomplished an insurmountable feat."

That's my plan, anyway.

[–]HaydenTheFox 10 points11 points ago

While I wouldn't personally climb a mountain, I agree 100%. Get out. Live your life. Do something amazing. Don't just sit there at the keyboard.

[–]Heisenberg67 2 points3 points ago

I'm fucking terrified of heights. Any other fun Ideas. I try to go hike unexplored areas at the lake near my house but I kinda wanna start something else?

[–]HaydenTheFox 3 points4 points ago

Just get out. You don't have to do something "amazing," just live your life. For me? I'm going to college right now. Getting an education is my plan to contribute to the world. I'm planning to travel Europe with some friends in a few years (if money allows). Sure, it's not very spectacular, but that's how I'm going to get out and live my life to the fullest. It's different for everyone. Hell, maybe you could conquer your fears!

[–]lurkity_mclurkington 1 point2 points ago

Totally agree. While you don't have to climb mountains, venture to the black depths of the sea, or face deadly animals, you can go visit a far off land that has beautiful cultures, exotic traditions you don't understand, and a language you may have never heard.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Bicycle touring. Rock climbing (not so scary if when you're in a harness, or you can just boulder). Wilderness survival/back country backpacking.

[–]neoporcupine 0 points1 point ago

Geocaching!

[–]JuggsGotchya 0 points1 point ago

[–]cmsj 0 points1 point ago

you say that while sitting at a keyboard ;)

also what if you like sitting at a keyboard? I like climbing up mountains (although not mental ones like OP's photo), but I also like sitting with friends and I also need to spend time alone so I can think :)

[–]HaydenTheFox 0 points1 point ago

Just because I'm sitting at a keyboard now doesn't mean I don't leave it.

[–]Defender 45 points46 points ago

I say the same thing about video games.

[–]Chii 1 point2 points ago

and its also less dangerous...but for some reason, most people don't buy it.

[–]I_make_things 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, and knowing how often I die due to stupid mistakes in video games makes me a little cautious about the real world.

BTW my video game experience tells me they got up there by jumping

[–]Othy 0 points1 point ago

Nonsense. They took a hardy horse. Straight up the side.

[–]blkdiamondskier 6 points7 points ago

I agree 100%. That is why I climbed and skied this: Tuckerman Ravine.

[–]v3nturetheworld 1 point2 points ago

whats the pitch like on that? as in hop turns to make any sorts of turn and your shoulders are in the snow?

[–]skittle_scandal 2 points3 points ago

Anywhere from 25-50 degree pitch down the headwall depending on that year's snowfall, the wind, and section you descend.

May is a great time to go up there. The snow has settled so the chance of avalanche is greatly reduced. But the thing you need to watch out for are falling ice chunks which thawed to the point of release.

It is a hell of a good time though, just be smart and be safe.

[–]scootyonover 0 points1 point ago

That's a RAVINE???!!??

[–]v3nturetheworld 4 points5 points ago

That mixed feeling of fear and adrenalin is indescribable...It's almost impossible to explain the feeling of staring potential death of a 1000ft plummet right in the eye. I climbed a slope as steam as this, but it was with a small sloped edge about as steep as above, and with a huge crevasse lurking a slip away below my feet (roped in of course). After that I had to cross a 'plug' over that same cravasse. Another extreme is free climbing. I went white water rafting in the grand canyon a few years back and I got a friend and I guide and we freeclimbed about 500 or 600ft up pretty steep, at some points vertical, sand stone (very very loose) lined material. One slip and...well...death. You think to yourself 'I am in total control of me being alive or dead right now, anything that happens is human error here, so don't fuck up', basically a very very powerful feeling. TL;DR Just look at the picture :)

[–]HerpDeeDurr 1 point2 points ago

That is inspiring.

[–]Scadilla 0 points1 point ago

[–]6p7jQcVV -1 points0 points ago

Unfortunately, that is also a very short way away from becoming "That... is dying." There are ways to prove your worth to yourself and others without serious risk of death or injury.

[–]eire1228 -1 points0 points ago

sits down with cuppa in front of roaring fire and reads a book about crazy people who hang off of mountain tops.

[–]aspbergerinparadise 17 points18 points ago

if you fall (and don't have an axe handy):

  • Face the slope (slide on your belly)
  • keep your head above your body, (dig in a hand to one side to spin your body if needed)
  • bring your arms in front of you and use your elbows to dig into the snow, hopefully arresting your fall.

[–]falafax 7 points8 points ago

[–]SuperSluttySadSluts 0 points1 point ago

I like when this guy is used flawlessly as a response, it enabled an audible chuckle to escape my lips :)

[–]JoeCroqueta 2 points3 points ago

When you say face the slope, you mean "look way down" or "look way up"?

Seriously, I did not understand that :)

BTW OP: How can you say NOPE? Than must be a great experience!!

[–]aspbergerinparadise 2 points3 points ago

when I say "face the slope" i mean you should be sliding on your belly, not your back.

[–]JoeCroqueta 1 point2 points ago

Ah ok, I imagined that part, and what about the direction?

What goes in the direction of the fall, head or feet?

I'm guessing feet would be better.

[–]aspbergerinparadise 3 points4 points ago

yeah, feet first, otherwise your elbows will be pointing the wrong direction.

[–]JoeCroqueta 1 point2 points ago

Thanks!, I hope to remember everything the next time I'm falling down a snow covered mountain :)

[–]TheRider1 2 points3 points ago

I went on a Winter Skill's course through my work last year and part of the course was learning ice axe arrests. We did this in a variety of different manners - basically learning how to correct ourselves from sliding down backwards head first, backwards face first, forwards face first, and so on. A lot of fun doing it on a slope without an actual drop ahead! I'm not sure I'd manage to co-ordinate myself with fear pumping through my veins though.

Still, it's an invaluable skill that's essential to know if you were to even consider doing winter walking in the hills/mountains.

[–]bk553 1 point2 points ago

But really, your buddy should be bracing himself on either on the opposite side of the crest or with an axe in the 4 seconds it takes to hit the end of that 25 ft. tether he's carrying.

That's why you climb with someone you trust.

[–]ThePurpleCloud -3 points-2 points ago

When you self arrest you slide on your butt

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Not on a slope as intense as that?

[–]ThePurpleCloud 0 points1 point ago

If you go down facing the hill you have a much better chance of getting your feet stuck in the snow and flipping over plus the chance of you stabbing yourself in the belly is much higher

[–]rocketsocks 0 points1 point ago

That's why you practice doing it right.

[–]THEsleepyPOTATO 4 points5 points ago

imagine tripping on your own foot up there shudders

[–]T-Luv 9 points10 points ago

Don't worry. If you fall, you'll land on nothing but soft, virgin snow.

[–]falafax 10 points11 points ago

Albeit at terminal velocity.

Your user name is SimilarImage... But all these images are the exact same freaking image!!!!! -_-

[–]SilentWolfjh 1 point2 points ago

similarity does not exclude exact copies, just means it's 100% similar.

[–]dangerfieldxx 2 points3 points ago

I 100% like the way you think.

[–]dayvieee 5 points6 points ago

Imagine snowboarding or skiing of that! HOW EPIC WOULD THAT BEEEEEEEEEEE

[–]belfastphil 0 points1 point ago

Yep!

[–]imbehindyou2 1 point2 points ago

dude if it was just a snow ramp that goes all the way to the ground with no sharp or rocky surprises at the end and just a fluffy bed cushion i would totally go there

[–]changethepage 0 points1 point ago

Imagine doing that as a career...!

[–]feor1300 0 points1 point ago

"don't sneeze, don't sneeze, don't sneeze..."

[–]Kujo_A2 1 point2 points ago

Pshh, that's what the ice axe is for.

[–]TumorPizza 0 points1 point ago

I could do this. The one that gets me is sleeping on the vertical wall.

[–]Groller -1 points0 points ago

I think i may be crazy. First thing i thought was "i would so sled that"

[–]MikeSardina 0 points1 point ago

I'll just leave this here...

The thing that stops me from doing things like this (i mean besides the cash costs that keep me college locked) is coming back down. I have trouble figuring out how people can come back down the mountain. I know has to be possible but it still just terrifies me.

I guess what i'm saying is that going up would be exciting and amazing, but coming back down would be terrifying.

[–]Hyper1on 0 points1 point ago

Or you could just do this.

What mountain is this? The view is incredible!

[–]Retanaru 1 point2 points ago

I hate snow covered peaks like this. You have no idea where the real peak edge is. They could be 5 feet above actual solid ground and 3 feet off the cliff without even knowing. Fuck no.

[–]naypalm 1 point2 points ago

NOPE? You mean YES?

[–]scottchman1 0 points1 point ago

SLOPE

[–]blasticinc 0 points1 point ago

More like "hell yeah"

[–]tha_dude_29 0 points1 point ago

I think I speak for us all in saying that I will be very disappointed if he never rolled a snowball down the side, which would gain momentum and mass until it started to pick up cars and such.

[–]Spam-Monkey 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know what peak that is? Also, I think it looks like fun. -sm

Sledding hill; Challenge. Fucking. Accepted.

[–]whatisitdragons 0 points1 point ago

I would absolutely love to do something like this one day. I'm no athlete so I wouldn't be climbing Everest, however I would love to climb a mountain some day.

[–]satan_loves_you -1 points0 points ago

I need a Valium just to look at this picture, thanks..

[–]thinkerofstuff 1 point2 points ago

This may seem like a stupid question, but if you trip, won't you tumble down the side of that mountain?

[–]rocketsocks 4 points5 points ago

There are several layers of techniques and tools at your disposal to keep you from dying in such a situation. First, if you fall you should "self-arrest" which means turning over so you are upright (falling feet first) and facing the ground. Then you can use your ice ax in a standard maneuver with one hand on the back of the head held near your shoulder and the other hand on the end of the handle held near your belly, you then dig the head of the ax into the ice or snow and pull up on the handle so the ax bites into the snow/ice deeper and harder, until you stop. This is all one move and you practice doing it repeatedly from different orientations so it becomes second nature. Depending on your proclivities you may have your ice ax tethered to your hand, so no matter how you fall you can recover it and make use of it, though this can be somewhat dangerous if you lose control of an object with lots of pointy bits and go tumbling down a hill with it guaranteed to be in close proximity to you, so it's a bit of a judgment call. Anywho, if you manage to lose your ax then you can always dig into the snow with your knees and elbows, although this obviously doesn't work so well on hard ice.

Your major other line of defense is your team/partner. If you fall you should yell "FALLING!" and that will trigger everyone in your team to immediately go into an arrest position in the time it takes for the coils of rope to run out. In this case the other climbers will be in a similar position as the self-arrest position with the exception of digging their feet very strongly into the snow/ice as well. This is something that you can do while stationary but not something you want to try while wearing crampons and falling because you'll probably just flip your entire body and/or break your foot. The rope is "dynamic" meaning that it is somewhat elastic, which will moderate the jerking motion of the rope as it becomes taught, which prevents injury to the falling climber but also reduces the force on the anchors (in this case the other climbers). Additionally, when climbing on a cornice like this it might make more sense for the other climber to simply jump to the other side of the ridge line.

If you were climbing over thick ice or right above a steep dropoff with a short runout then it's likely you'd use some form of "protection" gear such as setting an anchor and belaying across or such-like.

[–]Squirrel_Whisperer 0 points1 point ago

You have an axe to help arrest your fall.

[–]finalcloud33 0 points1 point ago

I am getting sick of this Nope garbage.... This looks amazing.
