Dont keep an Irish wolf hound in an apartment. They are freakin immense. You need a house. People I've talked to say a breeder wont even sell you one unless you have like a sprawling estate.

Indeed and I would never pass them up because of that, but I seem to take their loss harder than others seem to, so it at least is a consideration (if a somewhat small one). I still very much dealing with my Dog that passed just over three years ago.

Big Dogs are best Dogs and it's so unfair how comparatively short their lives are.

thanks for the advice. i'm hoping i'll be able to afford a house within the next five years, but the much more likely option is me convincing my soon to retire parents to get one when they inevitably succumb completely to empty-nest syndrome

I've always heard (and read) that wolfhounds are really calm, almost docile. They're fine living in an apartment as long as you give them plenty of exercise. I think that's true of most breeds, though.
