I'm not much of a businessman, but I have an inkling that money might have something to do with this decision.

[–]realchompsky 32 points33 points ago

Guys, i think he's onto something.

[–]dacreux 9 points10 points ago

But greed never drove anyone to do anything bad!

[–]Kuxir 4 points5 points ago

Making an online scrabble game is bad?

[–]dacreux 5 points6 points ago

naw it's fine, but creating something identical to it, calling it something different and selling it is unethical in my opinion.

[–]darksyn17 4 points5 points ago

Unless it's the same company making it that owns the original game...

[–]trezoid 1 point2 points ago

Which it is (Hasbro sells both of them)

Edit: Which makes the whole thing even more confusing, really.

[–]TotesJellington 1 point2 points ago

This is not unethical. This is not unethical in the slightest.

[–]bcarle 4 points5 points ago

Whoa whoa whoa, I wanna see some evidence before you start throwing around these kind of wild accusations.

[–]camp_anawanna 0 points1 point ago

[–]Decipher 132 points133 points ago

It's made by Hasbro, who makes Scrabble. The only obvious difference is where the double and triple word/letterscores are on the board. They might as well cash in on people's stupidity since there are bound to be people out there who won't play Scrabble because it's "too old" or "not cool."

[–]george_cantstanya 26 points27 points ago

there also might be, or will be, people too young to know what 'scrabble' is.

[–]DetectiveClownMD 13 points14 points ago

Never understood this, maybe because I was a poor kid. I know about plenty of things decades older than I am. I'm 28 and grew up watching gilligans island, superman, I love lucy, Happy Days, and mash through reruns. May be kids these days have way more cheap entertainment.

[–]iwantagoodusername 7 points8 points ago

My brothers are much younger than you and have the same experiences you did growing up.

[–]george_cantstanya 1 point2 points ago

It's bc they want people to know what the game is right away- name recognition can be extremely important.

[–]guitarmythdestroyer 1 point2 points ago

Yes, everyone between 25 and 35 watched that shit. NICKEL FUCKING ODEON, motherfucker.

[–]SocratesBrotherDave 0 points1 point ago

Im 19 and had the English equivalent, it was pretty normal for people from around my area. Furthermore my parents were way older than average and volunteered at a theatre, so my house was filled with the tech and music 30 years older than was normal. Hell I knew how to change a wireless's valve.

[–]Kuxir -5 points-4 points ago

You don't understand that most kids who grow up watch TV shows and movies that were airing?

[–]DetectiveClownMD 12 points13 points ago

No I dont understand people who use "it came out before I was born" as an excuse of not knowing or experiencing common things that are still around.

[–]FemministFatale 4 points5 points ago

I just saw a commercial for this and laughed my ass off. It's very meta --- a board game based on an app based on a board game. I must say however that Scrabble has needed a visual update for a long time, but why even bother with that when they've established an IP that is much more popular with their younger target audience? No one needs to know Scrabble even existed...Sad but true.

[–]bulletbillx 2 points3 points ago

Only thing I can think of this meta is Street Fighter: The movie: The game.

[–]iceburgh29 3 points4 points ago

Or Battleship: The Movie Board Game.

[–]Chickenstew 1 point2 points ago

Saw a commercial for this the other day.... . But you are absolutely right. It will bring in money since it is a "thing" at the moment.

[–]Landowns 9 points10 points ago

Also the tile distribution and most tiles' point values are different. If you play Scrabble a good bit, playing Words With Friends is nothing like it.

[–]doublestep 56 points57 points ago

I think "nothing like it" is a bit of an exaggeration

[–]krevency 22 points23 points ago

It's apples and golden delicious apples.

[–]porterwomble 13 points14 points ago

No, Apples to Apples is totally different from Scrabble/Words With Friends.

[–]HMPoweredMan 7 points8 points ago

Apples to Apples/Cards Against Humanity isn't though.

[–]IKillGrammarNazis 0 points1 point ago

one is family friendly. One is not.

[–]MunchKing 0 points1 point ago

Putting to games together that aren't like Scrabble/Words With Friends doesn't make either game like Scrabble/Words With Friends.

[–]Prowlerbaseball 2 points3 points ago

Yes it is as good as a games as apples to apples

[–]Sabird1 7 points8 points ago

Like the difference between college and NFL football.

[–]Jesus_In_Drag 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. Another way to describe it would be like Beach Volleyball to Making Alien Contact.

[–]Sabird1 1 point2 points ago

Either you don't understand my comment or are trying to be very sarcastic. I don't know which.

[–]Jesus_In_Drag 4 points5 points ago

Or, I'm full of turkey and wine. I bet it's that one. That comment I made makes no sense. Your comment is better.

[–]Sabird1 1 point2 points ago

Too much turkey really screws with your mind

[–]FrankNStein 3 points4 points ago

Triptophan...not even once.

[–]DUMB_DUMB -2 points-1 points ago

Me wish I could downvote you 6 million times.

[–]llBradll -2 points-1 points ago

True, but different bonus arrangements can have a huge effect on the game. The scrabble we grew up with is more focused on making good long words, while the Wordfeud variant is all about combining multipliers and strategic placement of words than the words themselves.

I could win most games of Wordfeud with words composed of 3 or less letters, while scrabble is more about extending further to the multipliers.

[–]midgetkiller 7 points8 points ago

There is a big difference between "nothing like it" and "the point system is kinda different, but the game is the same concept."

[–]StinkinFinger 0 points1 point ago

I've played a jillion games of both and Yahoo's version. It's a better layout.

[–]dat_face 15 points16 points ago

More like:

WHY THE FUCK
ARE PEOPLE USING THE SMALL
VERSION OF THIS MEME AGAIN

[–]SarahPalinisaMuslim 0 points1 point ago

Or this meme at all. Seriously, fuck this and "Am I the only one around here...?"

[–]chattereddit 1 point2 points ago

I need to see you to believe it's you.

[–]MikWin 20 points21 points ago

Well scrabble may have words, but it lacks FRIENDS. Clearly the only solution was to take the words from scrabble, and spice it up, by adding friends.

[–]QuaereVerumm 6 points7 points ago

It was more like Words with Enemies when I played.

[–]bcarle 3 points4 points ago

I started playing scrabble and lost ALL my friends. Will this new game bring them back?

[–]ChemicalShenanigans 2 points3 points ago

Monopoly with Friends.

I call 40% of all profits.

[–]Decipher -1 points0 points ago

Because it's TOTALLY possible to play single player Scrabble! /s

[–]nartlebee 9 points10 points ago

I've done this before :(

[–]skimsmilk 2 points3 points ago

Now if you'll excuse me I have a solitaire tournament to get to.

[–]motoroats 26 points27 points ago

That's like Draw Something. It's called Pictionary, people. Shit.

[–]Decipher 19 points20 points ago

Again, both made by Hasbro.

[–]kellogn2 16 points17 points ago

You sure know your board game companies.

[–]PulpFact 12 points13 points ago

No, this topic has just been well discussed on Reddit for some weeks now.

[–]rebeljew 2 points3 points ago

I bet he's amazing at pub quizzes.

[–]Quaytsar 2 points3 points ago

Pretty much everything is either Hasbro or Milton Bradley.

[–]bulletbillx 2 points3 points ago

Is parker brothers still around?

[–]trouble_brewing 0 points1 point ago

Parker Brothers is owned by Hasbro.

[–]trouble_brewing 0 points1 point ago

Milton Bradley is owned by Habro.

[–]Decipher 2 points3 points ago

I saw the logos on the boxes. ;)

[–]kellogn2 1 point2 points ago

You clever bastard.

[–]webchimp32 4 points5 points ago

Can't wait for them to make a boardgames from that Battleships film.

[–]Midgetmunky13 2 points3 points ago

They already did. It's the board game based on a movie that's based on a board game!

[–]kctopus 3 points4 points ago

Ever heard of money?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]renstarx 1 point2 points ago

Money can be exchanged for goods and services

[–]PostPostPostIronic 0 points1 point ago

Woohoo!

[–]lastweekshamsandwich 3 points4 points ago

Hasbro and Zynga have a licensing deal together. Hasbro is just milking the cow and capitalizing on the popularity of Zynga games...All the power to them. Heres a list of them - http://www.hasbro.com/games/en_US/zynga/

...they even made a Hungry Hungry Hippos "Farmville" version.

[–]bartacc 3 points4 points ago

Because money.

[–]Verblocity 8 points9 points ago

You know, so you can play with your friends without having to look at your phone all the time. It seems like a pretty obvious idea, really.

EDIT: OK, I guess I should have put an /s on this.

[–]Compani0ncube 4 points5 points ago

Damn it.. What did they do to you? Downvoted.. like a monster.

[–]lolroflqwerty 1 point2 points ago

I think the point of the post is that the game is pointless when Scrabble is the same game and has been around far longer. It's just a matter of capitalizing on the success of these mobile games.

[–]Verblocity 1 point2 points ago

Hence the sarcasm.

[–]lolroflqwerty 5 points6 points ago

Oh, I apologize. It seemed like you were serious. Haha.

[–]ReggieKUSH 2 points3 points ago

Is there an official words with friends dictionary? Because that game is fucking bullshit about some words. Non english words, proper nouns....

[–]poopsinshoe 0 points1 point ago

This is a troll right? It's like saying vinyl records were invented because iPods became popular. Scrabble was invented in 1938.

[–]stuttgart911 2 points3 points ago

Nobody gets pissed off at the hundreds or special edition monopoly games out there... Or angry birds gummies.

[–]NicelyNicelyJohnson 1 point2 points ago

It appears we've come full circle.

[–]Mr_Luke_Skywalker 1 point2 points ago

uh lets see here... MONEY

[–]Impissed 1 point2 points ago

What am i missing here?

[–]nancynaturally 1 point2 points ago

I said the same damn thing when I saw it at the store.

[–]sqdnleader -1 points0 points ago

Law Suit!

[–]gibartnick 1 point2 points ago

Here, Have some money to make your app into a board game. Isn't it already a game called Scrabble? So, you're saying that you don't want all this money?

[–]theinvisiblenobody 1 point2 points ago

$$

[–]userjoe9066 1 point2 points ago

Because money.

[–]hpclone25 1 point2 points ago

A 15 year old try to tell me scrabble was copying words with friends. I kinda wanted to stab him but for some reason killing ignorance is frowned upon.

[–]treefinger1235 1 point2 points ago

because stupid people will buy it.

[–]bds0688 0 points1 point ago

Words With Friends is made by Zynga. Words With Friends can't make shit since it's a fucking board game. Hasbro makes both because Hasbro likes money. Stop bitching, you cunt.

[–]skyhimonkey 1 point2 points ago

You guys hear of FarmVille's new game "Hungry Hungry Herd"? It's Hungry Hungry Hippos with farm animals. We need James Cameron to raise the bar again.

[–]Sango12592 0 points1 point ago

Cuz how else was Zynga going to profit more on that game?

[–]FullMoon1108 0 points1 point ago

Because facebook

[–]Quinn3333 0 points1 point ago

Profit.

[–]Redknight69 0 points1 point ago

£££££££s

[–]MunchKing 0 points1 point ago

Because Hasbro which makes both board games realized that they could sell Scrabble to people that might be more familiar with the name Words With Friends. Just a guess here.

[–]BrownGhost10 0 points1 point ago

Also a monopoly game board game, a farmville game and even a game similar to hungry hungry hippos.

[–]goggimoggi 0 points1 point ago

I don't get why this keeps popping up on Reddit. Why do we have Words with Friends? Oh, I dunno, because it sells? You don't have to prefer it, but the market decides value holistically, not you. They don't care about you specifically for good reason.

[–]LordLoss2 0 points1 point ago

Words With Friends is Scrabble god dammit!!

[–]gkx 0 points1 point ago

My favorite thing about the TV commercial (besides the fact that there's a TV commercial for it) is that it says "Words with Friends just got more social!" which just has so many wrong things with it.

[–]egaudigtbaer 0 points1 point ago

And the irony comes with the fact that the Scrabble and Words with Friends board games are made by the same company, Hasbro.

[–]Djgdan 0 points1 point ago

What's wrong with a board game of an internet game of a board game?

[–]meTroll2012 1 point2 points ago

Because of market, risk, cost and profit assessments made by management.

[–]weatherbot_five 2 points3 points ago

I can't wait for the release of the "words with friends boardgame" app.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Fuck any company that encourages young people to play educational family games together.

[–]liderudell 1 point2 points ago

Money.

You do realize they are going to make millions of dollars off of that. So what's your great idea?

[–]StrukkStar -1 points0 points ago

Money motherfucker, do you understand it?

[–]precisi0n86 -4 points-3 points ago

Why the fuck did Apple make an operating system?

[–]ChickinSammich -4 points-3 points ago

There's a Draw Something board game too.

IT'S CALLED FUCKING PICTIONARY
