Is there a name and artist for this painting?

[–]Mally87 472 points473 points ago

Giovanni Paolo Pannini - Gallery of Views of Modern Rome

The sculpture with the horns to the left of the zoomed in shot is Moses by Michelangelo, it's amazing.

[–]Rustiest_Venture 214 points215 points ago

Hell of a sandwich maker as well as an artist.

[–]LayF 65 points66 points ago

You've been to "Giovannis' Panninies" in south Bronx? Great deli...

[–]Bardlar 76 points77 points ago

Thank you for setting New Yorkers back 5 years in stereotypes.

[–]Everybodys_Mom 55 points56 points ago

As someone who just visited New York recently, it's not really a stereotype when it's true.

[–]AlwaysBeCreating 40 points41 points ago

stereotypes exist for a reason... because they are true

[–]WillSmithsfacialhair 28 points29 points ago

I told that to a girl in my lecture and she literally punched me in the face, freaked out, and dropped out of school. Weird day.

[–]MaximusFSU 68 points69 points ago

Ah, the old "violent insane homesick lecture girl" stereotype. Classic.

[–]fullnovazero[!] 2 points3 points ago

"First time I got punched in the face, I was like 'oh no!', then I was like 'this is a story'."

[–]Rustiest_Venture 11 points12 points ago

Never made it to the Bronx, sounds like a great place though.

[–]hammertime123 75 points76 points ago

You have in fact just confirmed you have never been to the Bronx.

[–]fullofredgoo 71 points72 points ago

Here's a hi res image from Wikipedia for your viewing pleasure.

[–]americnjesus 110 points111 points ago

why is the painting within a painting not in the same location on this one?

[–]JonDum 38 points39 points ago

Woah. wtf is going on here. Which is the real one?!

[–]DarkStar528 23 points24 points ago

Somebody call Nicholas Cage.

[–]red_drop_lollypop 29 points30 points ago

DONT WORRY, there are two very similar paintings, same artist. I believe they are mounted side by side in the Louvre. not a fake

[–]americnjesus 4 points5 points ago

Yes they are similar and yet very different. Why would this guy make this twice? sounds like a total pain in the ass.

[–]red_drop_lollypop 3 points4 points ago

artistic movement, or a period, based around the beauty of views. I guess he just had this one thing he was amazing at... If you upscaled any particular detail I'm sure it'd be a little less impressive

[–]shano83 3 points4 points ago

From the description for the one in the MFA Boston : "This extravagant souvenir was one of four similar paintings commissioned by the Duc de Choiseul to commemorate his stay in Rome as the French ambassador to the Vatican". Basically he got paid.

[–]wolfchimneyrock 10 points11 points ago

They are two pictures by the artist of the same scene, shifted in parallax and hung side by side in the museum so that from the right distance, you do the 'magic eye' thing and you see the scene in 3D, somewhat cool

[–]ueptvoovtpeu 7 points8 points ago

I feel like we've been had here

[–]VANSMACK 5 points6 points ago

this makes no sense

[–]Newtstradamus 3 points4 points ago

This. This times a billion.

[–]kagemucha 16 points17 points ago

Actually both are by Panini. The one above, in Boston, is actually the original painting done in 1749. In 1758-59, Panini painted "Modern Rome" again, OP's copy, for someone else. The second copy is at The Louvre.

Source: http://www.metmuseum.org/collections/search-the-collections/110001693?img=1

[–]ragaboo 10 points11 points ago

Erm ... nope. The two paintings are different. Very, very similar, but different.

[–]shrapnel09 19 points20 points ago

Now think about it as a 5000 piece puzzle. Don't think too hard though: http://www.amazon.com/Ravensburger-Views-Modern-Rome-Puzzle/dp/B00004TQMG/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2

[–]damngurl 5 points6 points ago

ooooooh now I know what I want for Christmas

[–]upwithwhich 7 points8 points ago

There's a flaw in Moses' knee. Story goes: Michelangelo was a nut. He started smashing Moses' knee, testing for reflexes or something crazy like that. Moses was so life-like that Michelangelo tried to get him to wake up.

Take the story I just told with a grain of salt. I don't want to "cheat" by googling, before writing down what I had heard when I was a kid in Italy.

But one thing's for sure: Michelangelo's sculptures are unbelievably alive. If you've never visited Moses or la Pietá, do it. You would swear they're moving. You would swear the cloth is swaying in the breeze.

[–]citizen_reddit 4 points5 points ago

For those curious - I recently saw the Moses statue where it now resides in the San Pietro in Vincoli [St. Peter in Chains] Cathedral of Rome.

The cathedral is built around two sets of chains, both of which are believed to have been used to imprison St. Peter - the story goes that when the chains were brought together they fused and joined.

EDIT: Fixed link and wording.

[–]Young_Link13 2 points3 points ago

I can remember even at 12 years old, I liked this more than the Pieta. Maybe it was the fact there wasn't hundreds of feet between us, but as an artist I am still in awe of how amazing these statues are. ESPECIALLY because of their age.

[–]TheAncient 8 points9 points ago

And to the left stands David by Bernini, also amazing. Those a little farther back might be Pluto and Prosipina by Bernini and Apollo and Daphne, also by Bernini

And then there's Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Colonna, Santa Maria Maggiore, Saint Peter's Basilica and so much more. This painting really is amazing.

[–]yogi89 998 points999 points ago

yes

[–]SilentOneEye 527 points528 points ago

Oh OK. Good to know.

[–]cobra_2109 42 points43 points ago

You can probably find the artist here.

[–]Dragon_yum 3 points4 points ago

Found him, thank you.

[–]Mystery_Hours 61 points62 points ago

Knew it.

[–]pez319 12 points13 points ago

The painting is located in the MFA in Boston

[–]CertifiedPublicAss 3 points4 points ago

This is correct. One of my favorite paintings there. Saw this painting again two weeks ago when seeing the new Mario Testino exhibit (which I highly recommend!)

[–]BaroqueFixIt 38 points39 points ago

Actually, he made two! This painting is in the Louvre, but there's a similar copy made about two years earlier with a bit less red drapery that's at the MFA Boston. If you're interested, there's even another painting he did with the same immensity and detail, also at the Louvre by the same name here!

Source: I do archiving.

[–]kagemucha 6 points7 points ago

That's not actually right. The painting above is actually called "Ancient Rome", while OP's is called "Modern Rome".

[–]crwcomposer 47 points48 points ago

Hey, I've been to that place in the mini-painting! It's the Piazza del Popolo in Rome!

Sorry, I haven't visited many historical places, so that was briefly exciting for me.

[–]TheAncient 14 points15 points ago

Actually, all those painting show places in Rome. So it's even more exciting!

[–]EuropeanLady 5 points6 points ago

Yes! The painting right above the enlarged painting is of Castel Sant'Angelo and the bridge with the angle statues leading to it over the Tevere.

[–]TheAncient 2 points3 points ago

Oh, but there's so much more! I can see almost all the main sights of Rome. Saint Peter's, Santa Maria Maggiore, Piazza Navona, Piazza Colonna, Quirinale, Capitoline Hill, Fontana Paola, Spanish Steps and more and more and more. God I love Rome.

The only thing that seems the be missing is the ancient stuff, like the Colosseum. I don't even see the Pantheon!

[–]shiiiitniggaaa 5 points6 points ago

This is why.

[–]TheAncient 2 points3 points ago

I will cherish this gift forever.

[–]OnlyTwoPlanks 20 points21 points ago

What is this? A painting for ANTS?

sorry. just sick of buttholewhiteknights

[–]bk404 3 points4 points ago

This is the first time I've actually seen the post and not just "[deleted]", and the guy has the decency to warn us beforehand just in case we're at work. So I don't get it either.

[–]shlack 3 points4 points ago

There is only a warning sometimes.

[–]Astraea_M 0 points1 point ago

Because warning people about obnoxious shit is nice? I appreciate knowing not to click. People do read reddit in public, or on a work computer, and would prefer not to have that shit on their computer.

Did you just steal a comment and cite the source?

[–]cunninglinguist81 122 points123 points ago

Posts relevant pic of him standing in real location for reference - reddit criticizes his footwear.

Oh internet anonymity...

[–]edubation 39 points40 points ago

I would totally rip on his socks IRL too.

[–]criminolelawyer 12 points13 points ago

given his lack of capris, he most likely is.

[–]TheJackalMan 9 points10 points ago

At least they're not with sandals.

[–]digitalcriminal 10 points11 points ago

Only Germans do that.

[–]housepoints4me 2 points3 points ago

HAHAHA. Thank you for this.

[–]TheRedComet 6 points7 points ago

For some reason I expected this to be you in the museum in front of this painting. (It's in the Louvre, I think? I saw this in person)

[–]toothball 4 points5 points ago

[–]brocode101 88 points89 points ago

Relevent . Zoom in to the kids playing in the background, see the details...Blew my mind..

[–]Half_Time_Show 145 points146 points ago

Zoomed in on the swimmer. DAT ASS.

[–]BaconCat 82 points83 points ago

Don't ever change, Internet.

[–]nwsreddit 24 points25 points ago

Also relevant, here's OP's picture in the google art project:

http://g.co/artproject/scvg

[–]chapusin 10 points11 points ago

Not the same one, but why is it so similar? did the artist pain two versions of it?

[–]poesian 3 points4 points ago

Very cool, but not the same painting. Weirdly. The image locations don't match up.

[–]Batmaners 24 points25 points ago

I noticed a LOT of cracks in the painting when you zoomed in. I took it upon myself to fix it, and now I think it looks better

[–]straighten 63 points64 points ago

[–]DeathWalrus 34 points35 points ago

Holy crap, that's Dark Helmet Man from Space Wars.

[–]TheRedComet 2 points3 points ago

GREAT SCOTT!

[–]Kodix 4 points5 points ago

Holy hell. If paintings used to be like this then I can finally understand the trope of the art critic analyzing paintings closely.

(Because that trope is just so absurd when today's "art" is sometimes a splotch of black and red with a name like "Abandonment")

[–]tofagerl 51 points52 points ago

Where's shitty watercolor when we need him?

[–]eamantite 42 points43 points ago

I'm not sure how he'd go about this one.

[–]kurtozan251 25 points26 points ago

Shittely.

EDIT: I have no idea what the adverb version of shitty is or how to spell it.

[–]misterraider 34 points35 points ago

Shittily.

[–]kurtozan251 4 points5 points ago

Thanks! I'm a music major and therefor, not too bright.

[–]jefferytaylor 69 points70 points ago

Not too sharp

[–]eetsumkaus 18 points19 points ago

nice try, but the delivery was a little flat

[–]Assmeat 17 points18 points ago

Enhance, renaissance style

[–]Vitalstatistix 25 points26 points ago

This painting is from 1757; long after the Renaissance ended.

[–]Schmoo823 6 points7 points ago

Artists did gallery paintings like these to essentially advertise their skill as artists. They painted famous works to show that they could do just as well as that guy and that guy and that guy.

[–]Dreuu 3 points4 points ago

Yo dawg, I heard you like paintings so I painted you a painting in your painting

[–]yogi89 86 points87 points ago

Yo Dawg, I heard you like paintings...

[–]afterm 68 points69 points ago

[–]me_on_a_couch 18 points19 points ago

I don't really understand why that part of the painting is so special. Can someone please explain it to me?

[–]segonyosoftendo 53 points54 points ago

I think it is because that is a very small portion of the whole painting and it has another incredible painting within it.

[–]me_on_a_couch 22 points23 points ago

Thank you

[–]Stratocaster89 26 points27 points ago

No body actually grasps the scale of the painting, they think its minute detail. That's why they think its that impressive

[–]me_on_a_couch 13 points14 points ago

Thank you

[–]HubblyCaterpillar 9 points10 points ago

Thank you

[–]thelawenforcer 7 points8 points ago

Look at the details considering its a tiny part of the painting as a whole.

[–]me_on_a_couch 12 points13 points ago

Thank you

[–]Cuznatch 4 points5 points ago

*Relatively tiny part; the actual painting is about 2 meters wide I think.

[–]Circlejerk_Conductor 53 points54 points ago

Waiting for the reddit art major brigade to come and tell me that this is shit.

[–]SpruceCaboose 70 points71 points ago

Well, this is a classic painting and is highly revered. I don't expect you to get many people claiming it sucks.

[–]Whoreadswhoreads 26 points27 points ago

I could've done that.

[–]SpruceCaboose 10 points11 points ago

I could've watched it be done.

[–]carlotta4th 11 points12 points ago

Art brigade here. It's pretty darn cool detail and technical skill. I had the pleasure to see it in person in New York.

EDIT: Apparently this particular piece is in the Louvre, not New York. I mistook it for a similar painting by the same artist... still incredible to see in person.

[–]ohandre 20 points21 points ago

have they shown up yet....

the grammar trolls will come shortly after for the scraps.

[–]Mystery_Hours 21 points22 points ago

And then finally the butthole guy.

[–]MayMT 6 points7 points ago

He's already here!

[–]ShinyTile 4 points5 points ago

Design major brigade reporting in:

I wouldn't hang it in my house (assuming it wasn't worth what it is, etc) but it's amazing technical ability. That, and neo-classicism is definitely regarded as a valid art style by pretty much everyone.

[–]link_yourself_smart 0 points1 point ago

I'm waiting for the reddit not-even-an-art-major-literally-just-wikipedia'd-it brigade to come tell us how much they know about and adore fine art like this and how philistine everyone else is harumph harumph.

[–]Delicious_Nipples 3 points4 points ago

kinda reminds me of the school of Athens, the first painting with all the ninja turtles in it.

[–]Wargall 8 points9 points ago

Who the fuck speaks like this?

[–]Stratocaster89 8 points9 points ago

I guess most of you are like "whoa, the detail is so tiny!" For reference, the last image is about the size of a human head. So it'd not actually all that incredible.

[–]mozetti 8 points9 points ago

The incredible part isn't the size, it's the level of detail in creating a painting of a gallery full of paintings, with each being a piece of art in it's own right.

Not to mention, that kind of detail in something the size of a human head is still incredible.

[–]dubdubdubdot 0 points1 point ago

HD paint.

[–]Huffsterification 2 points3 points ago

Enhance... Enhance... Enhance.

[–]lifesnotperfect 2 points3 points ago

I thought this was meant to be funny because the artist painted a guy piggy backing another guy, like an Easter egg.

Guess I missed the point completely...

[–]Xephik 2 points3 points ago

Truly a repost, I say.

[–]stopherjj 3 points4 points ago

Take it about 3 levels deeper and then my artistic ability is reached.

[–]TubesockWrangler 1 point2 points ago

Yo, dawg...

[–]st-augustine 4 points5 points ago

Wait... uh... I don't understand.

We can just post a picture of a world-renowned masterpiece - and give our opinion that it is..in fact... a masterpiece, and get karma?

Should I post a picture of the Venus de Milo or the Pieta with the title "This is really amazing sculpture, I say" and get karma?

Okay. Sounds awesome. I would love to see Reddit filled with masterful works of art and brilliant pieces of music and great poetry and classic literature. Please, let's pull together, and make Reddit known worldwide as an amazing repository of human achievement and amazing works of art.

(fewer memes, fewer clouds-that-look-like-penises, and fewer links of pictures of overweight people in awkward clothing.)

This is a paradise I can get behind.

[–]rb3333rb3333 -2 points-1 points ago

May the Inception comments begin!

[–]Ferg8 0 points1 point ago

What's the name of that painting?

[–]liveryowl 11 points12 points ago

Joey. I know the name doesnt realy fit.

[–]Ferg8 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure? I don't find anything on Google (only car shops and war horse) and on Wiki.

[–]carlotta4th 5 points6 points ago

He was joking. Check near the top of the comments to find the artist and name.

[–]FuzzyToaster 0 points1 point ago

This was possibly my favourite painting when I visited the Louvre.

[–]SilverApples 0 points1 point ago

Also just massive.

[–]EuropeanLady 0 points1 point ago

It really is an incredible piece of exquisite art. The painting right above the one which is enlarged is of Castel Sant'Angelo and the bridge with the angel statues leading to it.

[–]ptgunit 0 points1 point ago

Panini at the met, right? I took a picture of that. It's my background on my phone.

[–]theKman24 1 point2 points ago

I can't believe some of the stuff humans can do. I could never in a million years complete anything like this.

[–]L-G-C 0 points1 point ago

I see you are enjoying the works within the Louvre!

[–]OldClockMan 0 points1 point ago

Was this in The Louvre? I remember seeing something just like this when I was there. Still more people at the Mona Lisa :/

[–]Bigmbrennan 0 points1 point ago

Theres actually a painting just a couple down from that one (you're in the Louvre if i'm not mistaken) that's really cool, has like a floating skull theater and the detail in it is amazing.

[–]SilentTheTyrant 0 points1 point ago

My guess its that the original is much larger and this is a smaller replication.

[–]warm_cocoa 0 points1 point ago

There is a painting similar to this at the MFA Boston

[–]Hinxsey 0 points1 point ago

[–]Surdistaja 0 points1 point ago

Made in one night

[–]savitz91 -1 points0 points ago

I have this hanging in my bedroom. $5, Hospice Store.

[–]syflox 0 points1 point ago

If you look really close, you can see a painting.

[–]a_modest_proposal 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of Marius, from Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles, describing his own artwork.

[–]bmbp 1 point2 points ago

Here's the companion piece, which makes it twice as impressive.

[–]ShrimpScampie 1 point2 points ago

This is the painting equivalent of video games that are made of a bunch of mini-games.

[–]CompanionCubicle 0 points1 point ago

My husband got me a 5,000-piece puzzle of this painting. It is impossible.

[–]kidbuu42 -1 points0 points ago

this is like photoshop before photoshop

[–]jakeryan72 0 points1 point ago

some people have too much talent

[–]timothypjr -1 points0 points ago

I concur! Some of the smallest paintings are in perspective. Wow. Just. Wow.

[–]ginja_ninja -1 points0 points ago

I wonder what resolution he painted that at.

[–]Joysome 0 points1 point ago

At my work, we have a replica of this painting. I love looking at it. There is always something new to spot.

[–]Surullian 0 points1 point ago

Proof positive that some of the respected old masters were show-offs. "I heard you like paintings in your paintings..."

[–]Sunnyside711 0 points1 point ago

am i suppose to believe that the 'main' painting isnt a painting in a painting?

[–]doodledude9001 1 point2 points ago

ENHANCE

[–]asimons613 0 points1 point ago

is there a subreddit for cool classical paintings?

[–]Fucking_Mcfuck -1 points0 points ago

This is what should be praised - not people taking a shit on a canvas and writing an essay about why it's deep

[–]imakechems 0 points1 point ago

Holy buhjeezus thats insane.

[–]XSerenity -2 points-1 points ago

[–]primer343 1 point2 points ago

Now where is the clue to a piece of Eden.....

[–]bakinsoda 0 points1 point ago

I actually just finished putting this puzzle together! I love it. I am only looking for some classy frame -- sadly they are all too pricey --

[–]toadysherp 0 points1 point ago

not comparing pannini and coleman really, but joe coleman has some interesting stuff http://www.joecoleman.com/sites/all/keys/viewer.html

[–]RichterSkala 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact: Because some already not-in-such-good shape, antique sculptures (or rather copies of those) got wrongly repaired by renaissance artists or even lost along the centuries, paintings like these allow us to reconstruct, what they originally looked like

[–]squirrelDefender -2 points-1 points ago

This, to me, is the true definition of art - if I ever become wealthy enough to afford such great, timeless pieces of our world's history, I'll invest without hesitation. After I make an indoor water slide, of course. A man needs priorities.

[–]nafoozie 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing this for the 1st time in person. Awe struck is the only way I could describe my reaction.

[–]Birdunit -1 points0 points ago

Someone explain to me how this witchcraft works. This is incredible!

[–]jmanmd -1 points0 points ago

It's crazy how that's just one of the many paintings in the background

[–]McLol_ 0 points1 point ago

Am I insane or do I see very well-dressed hobbits in the bottom left corner?

[–]Hingle_McCringlebury 0 points1 point ago

Can someone please explain to me why OP zoomed in on that painting?

I feel like there's something I'm supposed to get, that just isnt happening

[–]Rhomth 0 points1 point ago

One should really diversify their art collection... All those paintings are from the same guy.

[–]arcticursa 0 points1 point ago
