living up to your name, thanks.

We would love it if you cross posted this to r/disney.

Bonus points for the better quality photo here.

Have a magical day!

As a dog, I approve.

Yes, this is dog

I love smart big dogs so much. It's like they have real human thoughts and emotions! My favorite breed is Belgian Malinois, but retrievers and labs are right up there!!

Source: I was in a short film with a Belgian Malinois, and you can almost see him processing thoughs

[–]Purpledrelib 2 points3 points ago

My emotions!!!

[–]SlyIntentions -1 points0 points ago

Look at those eyes! i feel the emotion!

[–]Franz_Kafka 150 points151 points ago

I thought that a guide dog was never supposed to be pet or played with? I could be wrong though.

[–]2peasInaMiniPod 158 points159 points ago

They can be touched/pet with permission from the owner, but in general, you're right.

[–]raging_asshole 41 points42 points ago

And since non-face-characters aren't allowed to speak while in costume, I'm sure Pluto didn't ask. Not verbally, anyway. Though if the guy needs a guide dog, I guess he probably can't read non-verbal cues.

[–]IphtashuFitz 68 points69 points ago

For all we know the person who took the photograph was a relative or friend of the person with the dog and was able to help facilitate any necessary communication. Or another person out of view of the photograph did the same.

[–]Nickk_Jones 47 points48 points ago

Yeah. I highly doubt Pluto just plopped down and started petting a guide dog out of nowhere. And the owners obviously allowed it, judging by the fact that a picture was taken.

[–]shoesh 31 points32 points ago

Also, the costumed characters are always always accompanied by a cast member who can talk for the character.

[–]boredatwork920 23 points24 points ago

What do you do for a living?

I'm Pluto's assistant

[–]PickettsLetharge 18 points19 points ago

iAMA pluto's assistant

[–]jimaug87 4 points5 points ago

I worked at a much, much smaller amusement park. The mascot's "friend" had a real job to do. This would be interesting.

The guy in the suit just had to dance and be silly. I much preferred wearing the suit.

[–]icollectunicorns 0 points1 point ago

Don't you mean you're friends with Pluto?

[–]LNMagic 13 points14 points ago

Doesn't Disney World have escorts for their characters? At Six Flags, the characters talk to their escorts, who can then "translate" for the guests to understand.

[–]DevonWoodcomb 7 points8 points ago

Yeah the character attendant would have spoken.

[–]WhiteHeather 4 points5 points ago

People use assistance dogs for things other than blindness. Just because he has a guide dog doesn't mean he can't read non-verbal cues.

[–]sangriadvx 0 points1 point ago

Hell a while back there was a post about a military vet that had his working dog kicked at an airport.

[–]ReignOfTerror 0 points1 point ago

Hello is Abtar there? This is Kerpal.

[–]ratt_man 0 points1 point ago

Agree, here in aus one of the rules for guide dogs and handlers is they are not be patted with the harness on (handler accepted) That was the first thing I noticed that the guide dog had its harness on.

[–]laureneloise 67 points68 points ago

My sister has a guide dog. You are allowed to pet them with permission. But when they have their harness on, they are considered "on duty" so some may not want you to so as to not distract them from their job. My sister doesn't give two shits though and even lets people give her dog treats.

[–]monacleman 20 points21 points ago

I remember When I was a kid I pet a lady's guide dog in the checkout line at Walmart, when she wasn't looking and she turned around a couple minutes later and asked me if I pet him, I said yes and she said not to do that ever again... I always just thought she was a grumpy bitch. Did the dog tell on me?

Edit: words

[–]Zorca99 5 points6 points ago

not too bad I don't ever again

huh?

[–]monacleman 2 points3 points ago

Fuck me! I used voice text on my iPhone.

[–]burgerofthepast 11 points12 points ago

well maybe next time you should not too bad I don't ever again

[–]monacleman 2 points3 points ago

Yes I learned my lesson.

[–]Lots42 1 point2 points ago

Probably. Those dogs are smart.

[–]orangeh 92 points93 points ago

your sister eats dog treats?

[–]laureneloise 55 points56 points ago

While she's telling assholes to fuck off.

[–]muybuenastardis 13 points14 points ago

I work at my library's accessibility services office and we see guide dogs everyday. One time a blind woman came by with this beautiful golden retriever and this one staff member was carrying dog treats with her. She made the mistake of feeding the dog while it was on duty, which consequently made the dog veer off its path and instead of taking its blind owner to the lecture hall, it would come looking for the staff memeber with the love petting and the treats.

[–]Cehrazad 9 points10 points ago

Only when it's harness is off, and with the user's permission. The dogs are trained so that when the harness is on, the dog is working--ideally, that means no eating, no peeing/pooping, sniffing around, etc. The owner is responsible for making sure the dog has time with the harness off to just be a dog (and eat, etc.). You can get big safety problems when people start petting/feeding the dog, since the dog may start to associate being in a certain area with treats/playtime, and guide a person there instead of the intended destination.

It's also important to remember that most (to all) of the time, the user doesn't actually own the dog--they have 10-11 year contracts, after which point the dog is adopted out. If the dog becomes unsafe (see above), it will need to be sent back. If this happens more than once, the guide dog school can refuse to work with the user again.

tl;dr Don't pet or feed a guide dog without asking permission, and don't be pouty when they say no.

[–]TelNeuro 11 points12 points ago

Guide dogs are trained to play on command. Usually from the time they are puppies that they can only play, or say 'hi' in public after they are told to sit and then their release command is given (Usually along the line of 'ok').

[–]Benassi 0 points1 point ago

Only during obedience training. When they get in the hands of an actual owner it's totally up to them. Plus they're technically done training at that point, so they're smart enough to have fun now without it ruining any training.

But sometimes during training they have their fun breaks and can play too; just not with any conventional toys like balls or frisbees. For if they learn to play with them it's a possibility they will see one while working with a blind person and run off/ make bad decisions for the person.

Source: My father and I have trained 4 guide dogs for obedience.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

As long as the owner says it's cool.

[–]IntoxicatedGiraffe 88 points89 points ago

How does a blind person enjoy Disneyland? Every ride is just Space Mountain.

[–]lazerwhale 147 points148 points ago

Disney is probably the best in the world for providing services for guests with disabilities. My dad has worked for them in Safety and Accessibility for nearly 20 years, and the things they offer are just awesome. They have hand-held captioning devices that give text descriptions of the sounds, atmosphere and surroundings for people with hearing disabilities, as well as audio captioning description through earpieces for the visually-impaired. And it's all triggered by sensors all over the parks. Plus the availability of Braille maps makes Disney the most universally enjoyable place on Earth, IMO.

[–]dorfydorf 44 points45 points ago

They have great services for everybody, disability or not. I love that place.

[–]hayashirice911 6 points7 points ago

They love your money you too.

[–]mouseknuckle 34 points35 points ago

For my money, they offer a quality product. I'm ok with that.

[–]YouCantBeSeirous -3 points-2 points ago

-Said MOUSEknuckle

I'm on to you!

[–]tikitessie 8 points9 points ago

As a former cast member and current passholder I want to be grumpy and indignant, but you're totally right.

[–]clownparade 8 points9 points ago

who cares if all they love is the money, if they are the best at what they are doing and provide an exceptional experience, they get all the money, and everyone is happy.

[–]dorfydorf 1 point2 points ago

Hey, I don't care. They make money, I get massive amounts of enjoyment. Besides, I'll like to think they are not like every other corporate machine out there.

[–]Fleshgod 1 point2 points ago

You mean, Disney, a corporation, is only providing their services to make money?

[–]Pollo_Bueno 13 points14 points ago

would be 100x as awesome than it already is if Morgan Freeman narrated all of it

[–]Lots42 22 points23 points ago

"This is the bathroom. Pull out your penis here."

[–]oogietron 16 points17 points ago

I said that in Morgan Freeman's voice, it was spine chilling.

[–]Lots42 4 points5 points ago

Giggity.

[–]KateEW 18 points19 points ago

With Disney's budget I'm sure that's not impossible.

[–]imnottouchingyou 3 points4 points ago

I found Universal to be more accommodating when we took my disabled sister down. Disney let us put her ahead on rides, but Universal gave the entire family passes so she didn't have to wait for us on the non-accessible rides. Most of their rides have a wheelchair car-- they let her stay on rides for as long as she wanted (usually about 5 rotations). Disney more often than not made us transfer rather than using the accessible cars (which we had a list of rides that used them).

[–]NeedsToShutUp 14 points15 points ago

You say that like it's a bad thing...

[–]never_knows_best 10 points11 points ago

Major plus, Space Mountain is the best ride there.

[–]IntoxicatedGiraffe 5 points6 points ago

If it's not broken down

[–]mouseknuckle 2 points3 points ago

Personally, I'm more of a Haunted Mansion man.

[–]dangerRAMEN 1 point2 points ago

I got stuck inside Haunted Mansion for 30 minutes or so next to the door that bends in and out and screams. It sucked just a little.

[–]dradam168 0 points1 point ago

And Space Mountain is the best, so I guess it's a bonus to be blind.

[–]WhiteHeather 0 points1 point ago

Just because he has an assistance dog doesn't mean he's blind. Dogs are trained to help people with a variety of disabilities.

[–]Golden-Calf 1 point2 points ago

This particular dog is definitely a Seeing Eye dog though, I recognize the harness style (I raise Seeing Eye dogs).

[–]kebzb8 22 points23 points ago

He looks like he just got reunited with his papa!

[–]RAGING__LONER 26 points27 points ago

I wonder what this dog is thinking. I wonder if dogs think they'll grow up to be human. So perhaps this dog thinks the "pluto" costume is a dog in transition to the human stage.

[–]ObidiahWTFJerwalk 29 points30 points ago

Dogs "see" the world mainly through their nose, so it's more like, sniff sniff "It's a human. But it's got weird clothes. But I don't really understand clothes, so I'll just wag my tail."

[–]RAGING__LONER 16 points17 points ago

I don't know. I've worn masks before, and my dogs won't recognize me. Or if the mask looks like a scary animal (like a wolf), they'll get nervous and bark defensively. There's a non-negligable percent of visual information being used by the dog to analyze its surroundings.

[–]ObidiahWTFJerwalk 9 points10 points ago

True, dogs will freak out at a mask, but usually if you let them sniff you, they'll calm down. "You look funny, but you smell right."

[–]YourDad 10 points11 points ago

Does it work the other way too? If you rip a stinky fart are they all like "Oh noes, a demon from the very depths of hell has just manifested in the room!", then they turn and see it's just you and calm down.

[–]Vyder 2 points3 points ago

I guess they don't freak out because your fart probably has a distinct smell your dog knows by now. You know what, we need a new kind of biometric scanners! The future is now!

[–]farmererin 1 point2 points ago

My dog's freaked out by her OWN farts, I'm not sure that your theory holds up.

[–]crimson_nova 2 points3 points ago

Same with mine. She'll fart and then turn her head and stare at her butt.

[–]strig 0 points1 point ago

They probably just think something like "oh, master has been eating beans and beef again"

[–]step1 2 points3 points ago

My dog was definitely weirded out by my horse mask.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]CookiesandCandy 1 point2 points ago

Don't think so; it looks like it's wagging.

[–]CapnScumbone 1 point2 points ago

The dog previously had seen Goofy...presumably another dog...standing upright and wearing clothes while interacting sociably with other characters. The dog contrasts that with the behavior of the nude and animalistic Pluto....and assumes that within the Disney paradigm...Pluto is either retarded or some manner of gimp/slave kept for Mickey's sadistic pleasure. This is why the dog seems bemused.

[–]dclowd9901 -3 points-2 points ago

Me and my gf make this same observation. Except we also speak for our dogs as they inquire us verbally when they'll become human like us. Our puppy is already planning for it and wants to get her ears pierced.

Yeah, we're weird.

PS We told her we'd pierce her ears when she turned human.

[–]negative_discourse 1 point2 points ago

What a nice imaginary life you have created for yourself, keep the fiction coming.

[–]dcaking 14 points15 points ago

You know what I never got, Goofy is a dog who talks and is friends with Mickey who is a mouse that talks. Mickey also has a dog, Pluto, that's really just a dog. I wonder how those two interact?

I read this somewhere and this picture reminded me of this so yup, repost.

[–]swiftysam 0 points1 point ago

And then I watched Shia on Ellen explaining his bar fight. Not such a bad guy really.

[–]dcaking 1 point2 points ago

This is the absolute best response I could've received.

[–]mouseknuckle 3 points4 points ago

Ok, I'm a human, which means I'm a greater ape. Now, imagine I have a pet monkey. See? No problem.

[–]Xer0day 0 points1 point ago

bo burnham?

[–]I_am_Fred_Astaire 9 points10 points ago

If I remember correctly, placing your chin on top of the dogs snout shows dominance over the dog. So your friend is now that dogs bitch.

[–]xkontemplatex 24 points25 points ago

[–]roboticinsides 43 points44 points ago

Yo Snoop Lion, go play with Simba.

[–]Dregon 2 points3 points ago

Thought he was biting it there for a second.

[–]Bennyboy1337 2 points3 points ago

His tail is wagging too :)

[–]ElfBingley 2 points3 points ago

If Pluto was a real dog, he would have showed his affection by sniffing the butt of the guide dog.

[–]wjeconsultant 2 points3 points ago

A few months ago I was in the subway (Metro) and encountered a blind young women with an OLD golden guide dog, the woman had a seat and the dog lied on the floor and in a few moments was snoring with his tongue handing on the floor. (He was just tired) When the women stood up (she was probably counting the stations) the dog awoke with a very worried look (where are we? Wait I got it) but instantly returned to his “on duty” state of mind. That girl is going to miss that old dog when he goes…..

[–]xrelaht 2 points3 points ago

Sweet jebus that's adorable!

[–]Kale_n_bacon 0 points1 point ago

I used to raise guide dogs! What's his name/Do you know where he was raised?

[–]cucumbers 3 points4 points ago

Don't wait for a response, this is not OP's picture.

[–]adyslexiczombie 1 point2 points ago

my father has several pictures of his service dogs with the Disney characters!! JJ loves it and so do the characters well some of them. my dads dog is not tiny by any means. One characters handler freaked out once it was so funny.

[–]iiredsoxii 1 point2 points ago

This is an awesome photo.

[–]GoldenWaffles 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought he was trying to bite Pluto.

[–]CtotheW 1 point2 points ago

[–]darahen2004 0 points1 point ago

[–]ianmk 1 point2 points ago

[–]this_AZN 1 point2 points ago

That's adorable. Dogs are so damn awesome!

[–]DaveBeCrazy 0 points1 point ago

I bet the dog's owner didn't see that coming.

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

There is a canine companion facility here in my town owned by Anheuser-Bush. The trainers take the dogs to the theme parks so they can learn to be around people and noise.

[–]RotPit 0 points1 point ago

Of all the shit that I downvote on r/aww. This is the one thing I'd up vote.

[–]JoshXinYourAss 1 point2 points ago

Poor owner never saw it coming.

[–]darkpaladin 1 point2 points ago

I wonder what it's like to be blind at Disney World? I bet it 10 times less fun but also 10 times less tacky so I suppose it balances out.

[–]skunkassbitch 1 point2 points ago

My lord, we have been awaiting your coming. Shall we begin the revolution?

[–]akr8683 1 point2 points ago

that's pretty meta

Hes trying to smell the guy inside through the eye holes

[–]snowlion18 0 points1 point ago

thats a good guide dog. to have a dog that will walk up to a funny smelling giant dog on two legs and even rest its head on the snout? shows hes pretty acclimated

[–]mrs_eats_pies 0 points1 point ago

This melts my heart.

[–]Doctor_Qui 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't have been as cute if Pluto was hugging a 400 pound wall-e-esque individual, self-handicapped, taking up the entire walkway, and running over little children. South Park got it right on a recent episode.

[–]Eddicus 0 points1 point ago

Aren't you not supposed to pet those dogs when they're on the job?

[–]DJG513 -2 points-1 points ago

Ok who else thought the dog was biting goofy at first?! Went from vicious to cute in a blink.

[–]SPEMason 13 points14 points ago

This is Pluto.

[–]DJG513 16 points17 points ago

I suck.

[–]CptObvious2 0 points1 point ago

It isn't ok to pet a guiding dog without the owners permission

[–]5il3nc3r 0 points1 point ago

It shouldn't be ok to pet it even with the owner's permission. The only thing that matters is that the dog shouldn't be pet or generally interacted with while it has its harness on, as that's supposed to tell it to stay serious and "work".

Too much petting with the harness on will confuse it and it will eventually be confused as to when it's supposed to work and when it's okay to socialize. The owner giving permission means nothing to the dog.

[–]orangeh 0 points1 point ago

later a kid breaks out into hives from the real dog hair on pluto. That child will believe pluto is a real dog for years to come.

[–]ArchGuru 1 point2 points ago

The dog is probably smelling years of child urine.

[–]redfroggy 1 point2 points ago

No.

[–]speedkillsdj 0 points1 point ago
