"Don't tease the animals. Lets go."

[–]ComplainsAboutDvotes 159 points160 points ago

As a kid visiting the zoo, I was near a cage where the sign said "the most dangerous animal in the world." Looking into to the cage all one saw was themselves in a mirror. I thought that was brilliant at the time. Now I think it's kinda trite.

[–]Dark_Green_Blanket 59 points60 points ago

That sign gave me such a sense of power.

[–]kirun 13 points14 points ago

I saw this at a local museum once when a special exhibition was visiting.

I say "saw". What actually happened was it was this little booth, and somebody came out of it loudly exclaiming "A MIRROR". So, yeah, spoilers anybody?

[–]chazzeromus 8 points9 points ago

Wasn't there something like that in a movie in futurama? I have horrible memory.

[–]chwilliam 22 points23 points ago

There was a Scary Door parody of a Twilight Zone episode.

"Turns out it's man."

[–]ungwei 1 point2 points ago

there was, couldnt find a clip

[–]Rubysand 3 points4 points ago

I read that in the book "Life of Pi". There's a movie coming out for it soon.

[–]eatthepinky 3 points4 points ago

great book

[–]Rubysand 1 point2 points ago

It was okay.

The Foundation series from Isaac Asimov remains my favourite read :)

[–]OffInBed 1 point2 points ago

Do they do this at all Zoos? Or was this at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston?

[–]ComplainsAboutDvotes 6 points7 points ago

Antwerp Zoo, Belgium. But I would imagine quite a number zoos do this to educate the Hew-mons.

[–]LOHare 291 points292 points ago

It's interesting how the human kids reacts to the sudden 'adult' presence. The hype dissipates, time to behave, adult is present.

[–]justcallmezach 94 points95 points ago

Yep. Has nothing to do with the "adult" being a 400 pound gorilla inches away from him (glass between or not).

Hell, I'm a grown man and I'd probably instinctively back the fuck up if anything I did got a gorilla's attention, adult figure or not.

[–]ubsr1024 105 points106 points ago

I wouldn't say the kid was scared, he didn't run away crying or anything. I think LOhare is right, look at the boy fold his hands at chest level and stand up straight. I've worked with kids and his body language is very similar to the way he'd behave if a human adult had put an abrupt end to his horseplay. Er, monkey business.

[–]ubsr1024 45 points46 points ago

Another thing I find worth mentioning, notice the way the boy takes a step towards the juvenile primate after initially taking a step back. The young primate nearly mirrors this reaction but is pulled away by the adult pretty quickly.

This is also something you might see when dealing with children. If you break up a fight or some sort of mischief between a couple of young kids, they'll initially have a moment of "oh shit, it wasn't me" where they back away from each other followed by a guilty "stand together while we get scolded" moment where they'll sort of line up in an act of solidarity so they can get chewed out together and say their "I'm sorrys" so this is pretty cool if you ask me.

SOURCE: My family owns and operates a day care center.

Edit: spelling

[–]Choralone 5 points6 points ago

I find monkies are a great way to childproof a situation. I just ask myself "Could a wild chimpanzee child get into it? If yes, so can my kids."

[–]Lanny0 0 points1 point ago

C'mon man, monkies? Not only is it the wrong spelling, gorillas aren't monkeys.

[–]MgrLtCaptCmmdrBalls 0 points1 point ago

That's very interesting, thank you for mentioning all that.

[–]justskidding 40 points41 points ago

I'm 99.9% sure that gorilla is not 400 lbs. It's a rather small female, so maybe 150-200 lbs.

[–]TheTwelfthGate 68 points69 points ago

well in that case I could totally take it on....

[–]justskidding 13 points14 points ago

She has a lot better muscling than you, probably. Chimps are tiny, but they beat humans in a fistfight knuckles down.

[–]boa249 36 points37 points ago

Typically because they bite off your fingers, face, and balls.

[–]justskidding 14 points15 points ago

They also have more efficient arm muscles. Chimps have been known to pull around 800 lbs one handed (cite), humans can't even do 500. It's got to do with different muscle fibers. But fighting dirty certainly doesn't hurt.

[–]samferrara 6 points7 points ago

Don't they have similar musculature, but they can constantly use it like we could when, say, a baby is trapped under a car, while we can constantly restrain it in order to perform precise, delicate tasks like sewing, tying knots, aiming a bow, etc?

[–]true_religion 5 points6 points ago

No, their ligaments are attached to a different spot on their bones than with human beings. This gives them more lever strength as per similar sized muscles, but less fine motor control.

[–]LaptopMobsta 0 points1 point ago

If I remember right it has do do with muscle density. I remember it being the same reason they can't float

[–]Dark_Green_Blanket 5 points6 points ago

My only three weaknesses.

[–]Sinopal 2 points3 points ago

To support you. They may not have more muscle mass, but their muscle may focus more on strength where as ours focuses on fine motor skills.

[–]PPOKEZ 5 points6 points ago

The geometry is also different. The muscles are attached to the bone in a more powerful "triangle" while ours are set up for speed.

[–]justskidding 0 points1 point ago

Having much longer muscle fibers doesn't hurt, either. Chimps can pull around 800 lbs of force with one hand.

But when you watch apes using sign language or tools, it's pretty obvious they suck at fine motor control.

[–]Choralone 0 points1 point ago

They don't care, if we want to show off, they can just rip our arms and legs off without breaking a sweat.

[–]Fisheatsbear 0 points1 point ago

This is usually because humans don't fight animals that way. If we fought as dirty and as much intent to harm as animals do, then we'd win. Most people just fight defensively and try to preserve the animal and self.

[–]Lying_Cake 4 points5 points ago

They don't even lift.

[–]MySickMailboxKitten -1 points0 points ago

Fight! Fight! Fight!

[–]insomniasystems 0 points1 point ago

I'm 6'2"- 165lbs and skinny as fuck. I think it weighs a little more than that, considering muscle weighs a lot.

[–]axl456 0 points1 point ago

get out of here with your facts and numbers, we dont need them..

[–]LOHare 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, yes, that could be a possibility as well. It didn't occur to me at first because the kid's reaction seemed more sobering rather than scared to me. But now that you point it out, I guess he could just as well be petrified at the sight of the huge gorilla.

[–]nemed 0 points1 point ago

The child is not afraid of adults. He stops playing and calm instead.

You should fear. Not the kid.

[–]gneumatic 4 points5 points ago

Gorilla parent 1 - Human parent 0

[–]naimgood 792 points793 points ago

At least the gorillas know how to control their kids.

[–]Haszan 54 points55 points ago

Cause they dont have cameras to film it.

[–]brentose 47 points48 points ago

Gorillas don't have facebook

[–]SkidmarkInMyUndies 24 points25 points ago

[–]ManMadeHuman 41 points42 points ago

[–]Zuesalmighty 2 points3 points ago

Why are we bringing monkeys into this we're all apes here.

[–]boa249 5 points6 points ago

But they do have Nintendo.

[–]creasetoeball 1 point2 points ago

Judging by this and OP's video, gorillas are very responsible parents. This must be the reason the term "gorilla-ing around" never caught on as a way to describe goofing off...

I bet monkeys totally suck at parenting

[–]ORIGINAL_MAMMOTH 6 points7 points ago

On the internet, nobody knows you're a gorilla.

[–]Jsiw1017 152 points153 points ago

I was thinking the same thing. Funny how the gorilla had the good sense to stop its child from acting out, rather than glorify it.

[–]ragnaROCKER 266 points267 points ago

acting out? looked like playing to me.......

[–]iamriot 35 points36 points ago

Looked like racism to me. A "three horns do not play with long necks" kinda deal.

[–]AtomikRadio 50 points51 points ago

If the parents want to let the kid bang on their windows at home that's fine but I'm pretty sure the big rule at the zoo is don't bang on the glass/cages or disturb the animals.

[–]Jsiw1017 3 points4 points ago

I think the first thing they tell you (besides not jumping in cages) is not to tap on the glass. It was meant more as a joke.

[–]deltib 0 points1 point ago

The lines running through my head for this were "Don't play with him, filthy little creatures. You don't know what deseases it could have."

[–]JohnMcGurk 21 points22 points ago

It had a pageant to go to. They're filming Simians and Sashes.

[–]Stompedyourhousewith 5 points6 points ago

I saw it more like the parent didn't want its child associating with the white hairless monkey...
am I projecting?

[–]Atrosityy 2 points3 points ago

The Gorilla knows how to act more human than the human. Shit.

[–]Oltima 0 points1 point ago

Ditto

[–]gooddaysir 0 points1 point ago

It didn't look like she was keeping her kid from acting out to me. The way she looked over her shoulder while walking away sort of looked like she had more dignity than the person with the camera. Sheikhs be put on display, but she doesn't have to be laughed at. (I'm guessing the people watching we're all smiling or laughing.)

[–]mabelsureisfine 2 points3 points ago

Came here to say this. At least she had enough sense to stop her kid when he was doing something rude haha

[–]irotsoma 4 points5 points ago

It's interesting from a sociological standpoint that it was the gorilla rather than the human that got her kid under control first. I didn't really think about it before, but apes do seem to have socially acceptable behavior standards. I wonder if the mother gorilla felt embarrassed like the human mother or father should have.

[–]imClot 5 points6 points ago

Do you know why did the monkey(?) do that?

[–]bricardo 36 points37 points ago

It's amazing how similar they are to us in the most fundamental things.

In the same way cats without fur look weird, do we look weird to gorillas?

[–]DrDragun 31 points32 points ago

They wear the twisted skins of dead plants to coddle them from cold and shame. They are not a proud race...

[–]MamaGrr 15 points16 points ago

I've honestly never thought about before and..wow.. I bet we look just nasty to them!

[–]AbusedGoat 2 points3 points ago

I don't think so.

A hairless gorilla would still look weird to you and I. Just because it's hairless doesn't mean it's weird, what makes it weird is that it's different than normal.

They would probably think that a very, VERY hairy human looks weird, because most aren't. They're not dumb to the point that they think humans are just hairless versions of themselves. They see us as a different animal.

[–]I-prod-spiders 17 points18 points ago

I dunno, I kinda like it. Instead of some kid who values Karma for some weird reason, it's just a bot reposting it and giving credit and a link to the original. It provides what is likely to be the funniest or most interesting comment from previous threads. I don't really see the downside.

[–]Predditor_drone 7 points8 points ago

I like it because it not only tells everyone that the post is a repost, but how many other times it was submitted. I'd rather a bot inform me, than have that one guy going "REPOST. REPOST. IT"S A FUCKIN REPOST. I SAW IT POSTED B4."

[–]ABentSp00n 5 points6 points ago

I like it a hell of a lot more than that "anyone seeking more info can also check here" bullshit. Nobody is seeking more info. Stop that.

[–]PrometheusGodDude 17 points18 points ago

Everyone seems to be pointing out how cute or funny it is, but I'll add what was my initial thought was. It is much how any human mother would react if she was held captive. The children are ignorantly enjoying themselves, not able to understand the circumstances they have met and will grow up in (picture master and slave child). For the human mother, it means nothing, but for the guerrilla mother, it is rather embarrassing and saddening for her child to be so fooled into continuing a friendly relationship with someone who keeps you in a cage.

I'm sure there is a better way of putting it, but I think the idea gets across.

[–]Endurlay 14 points15 points ago

Hehe;

"...guerrilla mother..."

I loled.

[–]frankThePlank 3 points4 points ago

This was my initial thought, too.

Damn seeing such a human like mother/child interaction like that makes it seem so inappropriate that it's happening in a cage.

[–]dmellang04 1 point2 points ago

the gorilla has better parenting than the humans

[–]Viperbunny 0 points1 point ago

The sad thing is the Gorilla mom was the better parent.

[–]savario1990 0 points1 point ago

Notice how the human parent just films this.... Yet more proof that gorillas are better parents than most humans.

[–]eatmebeatme 7 points8 points ago

It always skeeves me out that we anthropomorphize these animals to the degree that we do while holding them in cages.

Cute though.

[–]bricardo 13 points14 points ago

Many of these animals wouldn't survive in the wild. Many of these animals don't have a wild to return to.

[–]Vanabrus 6 points7 points ago

The thing is though... we descended from great apes... so I wouldn't call this anthropomorphizing. These similarities aren't what we just project on 'them', in this case.

Edit: My mistake, we had a common ancestor (see KIRW7). However, I think my point still stands.

[–]KIRW7 4 points5 points ago

The thing is though... we descended from great apes

That's not true. Humans and great apes share a common ancestor which probably lived 5 to 11 million years ago. That common ancestor gave rise to two distinct lineages, one resulting in hominids -- humanlike species -- and the other resulting in the great ape species.

[–]Vanabrus 0 points1 point ago

Okay, I've edited my comment to reflect that. However, I think my point still stands; considering we both came from a common ancestor, it's not really anthropomorphization.

[–]creasetoeball 1 point2 points ago

Seeing this:

The thing is though... we descended from great apes

followed by this:

That's not true.

had me anticipating a much different argument than this:

Humans and great apes share a common ancestor which probably lived 5 to 11 million years ago.

well done, up vote for the both of you!

[–]butterscotchripple 0 points1 point ago

I would enjoy watching a gorilla tear your limbs from your torso, and beating whats left of you with them.

[–]BigfishLittlefish 5 points6 points ago

'more evolved'

no one species is more evolved than another. Evolution is not a race, it is simply adaptation that allows species to best live in it's current environment at that moment in time.

[–]UTC_Hellgate 5 points6 points ago

'Evolution is not a race'

that sounds exactly like what someone losing the Evolution race would say.

[–]theoriginalaks 4 points5 points ago

Want to know how I know you don't understand evolution?

[–]Sweatervest42 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, just copying the article title. I fully understand that any species is more "evolved" than another. I should rather say " More beneficial adaptations to suit to their environment."

[–]MrsMoose7911 10 points11 points ago

You think the fact that their kid was so badly behaved that a gorilla didn't want her kid playing with theirs will be a wake up call for that little boys parents?

[–]Jinxy_Minx 27 points28 points ago

That's badly behaved to you? Someone has never worked retail.

[–]ishkabibbel2000 3 points4 points ago
