The people that make these automated accounts that are capable of things like this amaze me

[–]DrewJQ 5 points6 points ago

For real. I don't know how they do it.

[–]armchairist 7 points8 points ago

http://services.tineye.com/TinEyeAPI probably using something like this.

[–]JohnnyCamel 29 points30 points ago

and a bit of this

[–]EvilHom3r 2 points3 points ago

He probably uses Google's reverse image search. Tineye's results aren't nearly as good.

[–]2buffet2soda 0 points1 point ago

Shit yea, it's about time we started living in the future.

[–]lisabadcat 395 points396 points ago

And here we see a typical Jaguar in it's normal habitat - in pieces in the mechanic's garage.

[–]grizzgreen 133 points134 points ago

i can confirm it is not currently working as it is not leaking oil

[–]hamtoucher 26 points27 points ago

Looks as though the Lucas Electrics "magic smoke" might have escaped too

[–]grizzgreen 11 points12 points ago

don't worry, the magic smoke returns once every other blue moon just to let you know it's watching, and waiting...

[–]Arttherapist 1 point2 points ago

Must be black magic, Joseph Lucas' nick name is "The Prince of Darkness".

[–]asshatnowhere 19 points20 points ago

why did the british never get into making electronics? because they couldn't find a way to make them leak oil

[–]grizzgreen 6 points7 points ago

why do the british drink warm beer? because they have refrigerators with lucas electronics.

[–]Aavagadrro 9 points10 points ago

If it isnt leaking, it is out of oil. Just like if you see a Dodge Caravan built before 2004 that isnt smoking, it too is out of oil.

[–]Muskwatch 3 points4 points ago

wait, this isn't a model??

[–]el_pinata 1 point2 points ago

Showed this comment to my dad (an old mechanic) and he enthusiastically agrees.

[–]EINSTIEN420 2 points3 points ago

this is what you have to do to change the clutch.

[–]lunchbox006 0 points1 point ago

I think that might be a Ferrari 250 GT California. Very similar front end to the original Jaguar E Type.

[–]scuby22 56 points57 points ago

This reminds me of Todd McLellan's Disassembled Typewriter http://i.imgur.com/4fxH9.jpg

[–]moneymucker 20 points21 points ago

That disassembles typewriter actually looks more complicated than the engine, which blows my mind.

[–]seniorobvious 28 points29 points ago

The number of gaskets and pieces of hardware that are omitted far out number the parts shown. If everything was there it would look quite different.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points ago

Agree. There are no valves, spark plugs, etc. It's a v-12, even if you threw in JUST the valves and spark plugs that's another 60 parts, let alone all the other small parts necessary such as gaskets, springs, and more. Also not included here are all peripheral parts needed to make the car run; oil cooler, radiator, A/C, and many others.

Here is a breakdown of VW Golf 4 cylinder, that's 1/3 the cylinders/engine parts, all the parts from the front tires to the right are engine parts

Here's a video of a v8 being assembled in solidworks, lotsssss of tiny parts

Lastly, here is a BMW v8 engine with more of the little parts included. First time I have seen this actually, pretty awesome

This is fun, here is a 2013 Ford Mustand Supercharged v8

Ford Taurus SHO v6

Corvette LS9

Solidworks assembly of the Corvette LS9

[–]imClot 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. You deserve more upvotes. The v8 assembly video in solidworks was actually pretty fascinating!

[–]serri 1 point2 points ago

These still look easier to assemble than a typewriter, if only because of the scale and repetition of fairly separate sections. I would probably never be able to get that typewriter together.

[–]nickolove11xk 0 points1 point ago

For that BMW.... Where are the last 16 valves if their not next to the springs like the first 16?

Nevermind lol. I guess they were lazy

[–]dat_distraction 0 points1 point ago

FWIW, GM doesn't use SolidWorks (though Ford does), they use UGS NX. It's a bastard of a program. Exceedingly powerful, yet the most un-intuitive program I've ever had the displeasure to learn.

[–]Dstanding 3 points4 points ago

Small parts scare me. Engines are big parts.

[–]Pamander 24 points25 points ago

Jesus fucking Christ!

That is all.

[–]BigLlamasHouse 5 points6 points ago

Don't push your religion on me.

[–]Barbarossa_5 4 points5 points ago

Fucking Christianity is the best form of Christianity. Love thy neighbor and all that.

[–]dirice87 6 points7 points ago

i don't know who could argue that machines aren't elegant and beautiful

[–]firebadmattgood 1 point2 points ago

Typically, a mechanical system is called elegant or beautiful when it's been reduced to the minimum number of components. I don't think either the v12 motor or the typewriter really fits this criteria.

[–]nicearthur32 1 point2 points ago

This gave me an anxiety attack...

[–]CountVonTroll 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of this stop-motion animation of a telephone assembling itself.

[–]LuridTeaParty 1 point2 points ago

[–]ClassicLightbulbs 34 points35 points ago

crazy- so then you just pour gasoline on it and it moves or whatever?

[–]syslog2000 9 points10 points ago

Yes

[–]blue_strat 1 point2 points ago

Charge the battery, then yes.

[–]Secret_StoopKid 7 points8 points ago

amateur porn FTW

[–]Noel_S_Jytemotiv 0 points1 point ago

Spare time and square footage porn.

[–]mhyquel 0 points1 point ago

how astute and well timed. have an upvote sir. you have won this day's internets.

[–]briankauf 0 points1 point ago

Straight 6? I only see one head...

[–]pablothe 15 points16 points ago

[–]Badgermeister 5 points6 points ago

Am I the only one who thinks it's dumb to have a network of "safe for work" subreddits with the word porn in the fucking url?

[–]loluguys 0 points1 point ago

This is cool... but there needs to be a 'disassembled' subreddit.

[–]gallonoffuel 11 points12 points ago

Anyone know if there exists a similar picture for a small block Chevrolet?

Edit: Found this for the LS9. Would love one for a Gen1 small block though.

[–]dwhite21787 2 points3 points ago

Dammit, kids, I've got to be at work in 40 minutes!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]onowahoo 14 points15 points ago

Some people see something like this and know what's going on. I look at this and it might as well be Chinese.

[–]omnipotent87 7 points8 points ago

This is a great picture to show all the components of an engine, they are all laid out in a positioning that show where they sit in the engine. This doesn't show the little things like gaskets and bolts but none the less i find this a beautiful picture.

[–]SchlapHappy 16 points17 points ago

Gaskets, bolts, hoses, clamps, lines, wires, radiator, brackets, belts or battery, hell, there are way more parts not shown than shown. Still a striking bit of photography though.

[–]firebadmattgood 4 points5 points ago

The freaking carburetors are still bolted to the manifolds...

[–]Thunder_Bastard 2 points3 points ago

I hate that current generation are being brought up in such a disposable world.

Like you were saying, I look at that and see a rather simple assortment of parts that could be assembled in about 2 hours (far less if I was the one that took it apart in the first place). So many people under about 25 these days have no clue how to do anything like this and there are so few people willing to teach them.

I love fixing my own stuff. There is an incredible feeling of reward.

[–]Megawatts19 0 points1 point ago

I understand how the completed product and how to troubleshoot it for errors, but fuck me if I had to assemble the whole thing from scratch.

[–]saustin66 0 points1 point ago

I see art.

[–]Petrarch1603 0 points1 point ago

真的嗎?

[–]routari 3 points4 points ago

God damn it 5, not again!

[–]astroNerf 0 points1 point ago

My thought too. Here's the clip from Short Circuit.

[–]Viper_H 0 points1 point ago

Frankie, you broke the unwritten law! You ratted on your friends. When you do that, Frankie, your enemies don't respect ya. You got no friends no more. You got NOBODY, Frankie.

[–]elezeta 6 points7 points ago

[–]syslog2000 0 points1 point ago

That was pretty incredible. Good call. Have an upvote.

[–]Loushius 0 points1 point ago

Damn. Now I want one.

[–]MUSTY_BALLSACK 5 points6 points ago

I don't think this would be a very effective engine

[–]rocknerd 13 points14 points ago

It's a jaguar E-Type v-12. Beautiful car, engine was notoriously unreliable. My dad told me that you had to have 2 jags, one to drive while the other was being fixed. So you are technically correct, this was not an overy effective engine.

If you want to split hair though, the engine wasn't horrible, it was the lucas electrical system that allowed this engine to run. Absolutely terrible system. If I am not mistaken the entire car had 4 fuses, just to give you an idea of the atrocious design.

[–]spankratchet 7 points8 points ago

I used to own a Triumph Spitfire, which has a rather elongated nose like the E-type but is nowhere near as powerful or glamourous.

That had 3 fuses.

The fuse connected to the headlights also powered the emergency lights, as I discovered when it blew in the middle of the night on a twisty country lane.

"Oh dear, no headlights. Never mind, I'll put the emergency lights on while I see what's wrong, in the hope that I don't die in a horrible accident. Oh dear, no emergency lights."

Lucas electrics are rightly vilified.

[–]rocknerd 11 points12 points ago

You know why the British drink warm beer?

All their fridges used Lucas electrics.

[–]SamTheGeek 9 points10 points ago

  • The beautiful car.

| "The most beautiful car ever made." - Enzo Ferrari

[–]MrF33 24 points25 points ago

I don't know about that one, Enzo didn't live to see the Pontiac Aztec, so he probably would have changed his opinion.

What a beauty

[–]wtfOP 10 points11 points ago

Looks so good it cured my cancer.

[–]SamTheGeek 0 points1 point ago

Upvotes for you sir.

[–]Dawn_Of_The_Dave 3 points4 points ago

Jeremy Clarkson described the Eagle Speedster (base on the E-type) "The most beautiful car in the world". I can't help but agree. I wish they made more.

[–]not_a_monster 2 points3 points ago

Hmm the block seems way too short. Like it's missing the bottom half where the crankshaft goes.

[–]JimKB 1 point2 points ago

well see there's your problem

[–]shady_mcgee 1 point2 points ago

What vehicle is this, because I need to add it to my dream list

[–]10secflat 5 points6 points ago

Jaguar E-type.

[–]mlw72z 7 points8 points ago

More specifically a Series 3 (1971–1974) E-Type since it has the V-12 engine.

[–]Pamander 3 points4 points ago

Can you tell that from looking at those disassembled pieces or am I missing something? If so.. That's amazing

[–]garethashenden 5 points6 points ago

As usual with pictures of Jaguars we have people who have never owned or worked on them commenting on their reliability.

[–]rapax 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Beautiful bit of engineering to power one of the most beautiful machines ever built. Nice pic, too.

[–]rocknerd 3 points4 points ago

Only if you got rid of the horrible electrical system.

[–]goshfyde 2 points3 points ago

If it were any other jag you could get away with the insult, but the e-type is hailed as one of the most beautiful cars of all time so we car enthusiasts aren't having it.

[–]rocknerd 1 point2 points ago

I am saying it is beautiful vehicle, the body work and the aluminum engine are fantastic, however, the electrical system was extremely poorly designed.

[–]akmjolnir -1 points0 points ago

My auto-shop teaching in HS has that same car. We used to gawk at it every day.

[–]ufamizm 0 points1 point ago

"How hard could it be?"

[–]panzerschrekk 1 point2 points ago

radiator/s? btw: they didn't have A/C?

[–]superskier1 1 point2 points ago

If I am not mistaken that is a Jaguar E-Type, if it is that is truly an amazing car and in my opinion on of the most beautiful cars every made. You are a luck man to own such a fine piece of automotive engineering.

[–]kesekimofo 1 point2 points ago

Hope that floor is immaculate or that clutch isn't going to be installed.

[–]Paulk501 1 point2 points ago

Where do you buy something like this?

[–]SchlapHappy 2 points3 points ago

A car?

[–]wsfarrell 0 points1 point ago

Nice flywheel.

[–]Enelli23 -1 points0 points ago

Dat Jag..

[–]Toxcity 0 points1 point ago

Stunning!

[–]cj7jeep 1 point2 points ago

This is my favorite picture I've seen on reddit, it is an excellent way to show people how a motor works, thanks to whoever took the time to clean up and layout the parts, it was worth the effort

[–]SonOfTK421 0 points1 point ago

I fixed it. I think you meant OCD.

[–]Chewzer 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of this one.

[–]sixstringthing 0 points1 point ago

Ikea got another fucking bright idea.

[–]ch0keArtist 1 point2 points ago

Are we missing some bolts?

[–]Slidewolf 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, that is almost everything...

[–]Cemetary 0 points1 point ago

That is beautiful!

[–]faceinthegrass -1 points0 points ago

Is this like a small model car or what? It's really hard to tell. And yes, I know what car it is but I'm not sure whether it's the actual thing, or just a small model of it.

[–]damnBcanilive 0 points1 point ago

I don't think your car's gonna run like that bro.

[–]TheManWhoisBlake -1 points0 points ago

I work with marine diesel engines and all I can say is "Aww isn't that cute." The connecting rods for the engines I see are igger than the block for this engine.

[–]TK503 0 points1 point ago

Well there's your problem..your engine isn't put together the right way

[–]tarantulus 1 point2 points ago

DAT SYMMETRY

[–]JohnMcGurk 0 points1 point ago

That's not where that goes.

[–]travisthefairy 0 points1 point ago

That looks beautiful!

[–]mclarenisawesome 0 points1 point ago

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO AN E-TYPE?

[–]Sprengstoff 0 points1 point ago

Im about to be really brave.

I don't like the E-Type. I don't think it looks good.

[–]oakback 0 points1 point ago

Great pic! I'd love to see a similar one with a rotary engine.

[–]pieprz 1 point2 points ago

The angle of the wheels is ruining it for me. I've been on things organized neatly for too long.

[–]MaxCutterow 0 points1 point ago

It's wireless! How cool is that?

[–]BgBootyBtches 0 points1 point ago

I don't know anything about cars, but that is beautiful

[–]rasmus9311 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't look as bad I thought it would.

[–]tallpoke 0 points1 point ago

Simply glorious!

[–]accountnotfound2 0 points1 point ago

Parts.

[–]Funk_Munki 0 points1 point ago

Where's all the bolts?

[–]notseanmcbride 0 points1 point ago

Worst thing you can hear as a father... "DAD! I CLEANED IT FOR YOU!"

Good thing my son isn't a super genius.

[–]SouthernYankeeOK 0 points1 point ago

Thought this was an elaborate model car at first.

[–]jbond66 0 points1 point ago

How this is perfectly laid out has a very calming effect on me.

[–]ryangaston88 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that's actually a meth lab disguised as a jag...

You're not fooling anyone Mr Heisenburg!

[–]the_last_carfighter 0 points1 point ago

yup, it's all there

[–]captainfluffybunny 1 point2 points ago

I did that once with my first Volkswagon beetle when I was putting a new engine in.

I had extra bolts leftover when I put the new engine in, and never quite figured out what the bolts went to. It was disturbing.

[–]symustafa1996 0 points1 point ago

Isn't this, the Series 3, if compared to the previous models, the worst E-Type?

[–]syosm 0 points1 point ago

Dat V12.

[–]bthekid 1 point2 points ago

Can someone label the parts on this picture. I would love to see that

[–]nobody_cares__really 0 points1 point ago

isn't it a no-no to lay the crankshaft and camshaft on their side like that due to warpage?

[–]idontknowanythinggg 1 point2 points ago

It should have machine guns. I see no machine guns. This must be fixed.

[–]klobster 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to show this picture to an OCD person and see if it incites them to take their car apart.

[–]MacNamedDre 1 point2 points ago

Its missing the block and the clutch, while mounted to the flywheel, isn't what I would consider to be part of the engine.

[–]CountMalachi 0 points1 point ago

Where is the resolution quality enforcer when we need him?

Edit: found it

[–]PooPooCaCaChips 0 points1 point ago

It's like looking at a pile of legos. I just want to put it back together!

[–]quincy_taylor -1 points0 points ago

It's missing a flywheel

[–]poochydogbreath 1 point2 points ago

If you could just go ahead and label all these parts, that'd be great.

[–]asgeorge 0 points1 point ago

Where are the 87,000 nuts, bolts and washers that go along with that nice and tidy picture?? Lost, that's where they are.

[–]Srolio 0 points1 point ago

All cars should come in kits similar to this. I want to assemble my own car from a box.

[–]gammaburn 0 points1 point ago

Without (of course) every bolt, washer, circlip and seal known to man.

[–]fe3o4 0 points1 point ago

Let me guess.. you bought a car and the fine print said "hardware not included"

[–]effse7en 0 points1 point ago

Dat e-type.

fapfapfapfap

[–]jaspeh 0 points1 point ago

"Coolest model ever!" oh wait

[–]flattop100 0 points1 point ago

Am I missing something, or the timing chain not in the shot?

[–]Fudgefactor7 0 points1 point ago

It looks so deceptively simple.

[–]nrml 0 points1 point ago

Sans rubber and electronics.

[–]doktor_wankenstein 0 points1 point ago

Now, you've got a car, minus an engine, in the garage. Take me to it.

[–]notquiteamop 1 point2 points ago

this is the sort of thing that would give James May that fizzing sensation.

[–]M_R_Big 0 points1 point ago

You're missing some bolts.

[–]Bigshellbeachbum 0 points1 point ago

Sorry first thing I thought was OCD i can relate.

[–]jugglemank 1 point2 points ago

This looks like something Austin over at Things Organized Neatly would love!

It's a pretty rad site. thingsorganizedneatly.tumblr.com

[–]ITboredom 0 points1 point ago

Now put it back together.

[–]SargentMcGreger 0 points1 point ago

As someone going into mechanical engineering, I find this pic very interesting

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

Damn. This kind of makes me feel like Bender looking at a schematic...

[–]imazero 1 point2 points ago

Where's the block?

[–]huntruder38 0 points1 point ago

Now just to link everything in grey plastic bars, package it and sell it as a model.

[–]brandnew1984 0 points1 point ago

Looks like you lost a bolt, good luck putting it back together.

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

That's what a bipolar person would do in an "up". And then he wouldn't know how to put it back together again.

[–]Szos 0 points1 point ago

That's so sick. Its like model-building, but for grown-ups.

[–]tbnist03 0 points1 point ago

Where can I find a model like that?

[–]hamster_sword 0 points1 point ago

Theres your problem right there!

[–]Blitzwire 0 points1 point ago

This picture made the ocd in me squeal with joy

[–]rottdog 1 point2 points ago

The next exciting episode of James May's garage he explains the function and name of every single part shown here and the tools needed to remove them.

[–]combatsauce 0 points1 point ago

thanks for the post. I am interested in working on engines so I figure I'm gonna start small and look into the inner workings of a lawn mower engine. This was really cool to look at though.

[–]greatunknownpub 0 points1 point ago

Bravo. Now put it back together and I'll be impressed.

[–]datfeels 0 points1 point ago

engines r dum

[–]g-nerd1 0 points1 point ago

now all i have to do is figure out how it all goes together... :/

[–]Bluebird_North 0 points1 point ago

Thought it was one of those scale models.

[–]abbadon420 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to buy some blue meth from you, please

[–]jrwperformance 0 points1 point ago

Wow...that's cool. I just did a clutch on an e type this summer. You have to pull the whole engine and tranny as a unit to do it. Was pretty fun.

[–]white_star_32 0 points1 point ago

mechanic is a gifted person...when I take shit apart things get...scattered.

[–]dncomo 0 points1 point ago

I'm jealous of the floor, I can't imagine how I'd feel if I could see the rest of the garage!

[–]omgsus 0 points1 point ago

There are at least 40 moving parts in a "modern" reciprocating piston engine (OP pictured).

Compare that to 3 to 5 moving parts in a rotary engine.

[–]TheSciNerd 0 points1 point ago

Neat. Now put it back together, we are going to be late.

[–]Xysten 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of those little plastic models I used to put together as a child. Where all of the plastic parts are attached to that little grid thing. Imagine if your car came like this. It would probably be substantially cheaper.

[–]CockIsMyCopilot 0 points1 point ago

What are those things between the pistons and the rods? A cylinder sleeve? What’s the logic behind that? Not trying to be a smart-ass, I’m sure there’s a good enough reason.

[–]swiftb3 0 points1 point ago

Man, I can't get a handle on the perspective. I seriously thought it was a ridiculously detailed model and those were normal floor tiles.

[–]cheesehead904 0 points1 point ago

No engine block?

[–]juxtachamp 0 points1 point ago

Not sure what kind of mechanic this guy is, but he can organize like a MF.

[–]mattypatty88 0 points1 point ago

I thought the E-type was a v8... :D

[–]hi_kthxbai 0 points1 point ago

TIL there are 2 clarinets in every engine.

[–]THE_GR8_MIKE 0 points1 point ago

V12?

[–]Faided 0 points1 point ago

Join us over at r/MachinePorn

[–]Spankh0us3 0 points1 point ago

Ok, so growing up I had a neighbor who always kept one garage door closed. . .after several years, I finally saw the garage door open and could see an XKE hardtop inside.

I asked, "Hey, you have a Jag, why not drive it?" He responded, "It has a broken U-joint."

I said, "But, that is like a $12 part, why not fix it?"

He said, "Right now, it only has a busted U-joint but if I fix it and start to drive it, something else will go wrong and it will cost me more than $12 to fix it."

[–]Vemnox 0 points1 point ago

The OCD me loves this

[–]MostlyUselessFacts 0 points1 point ago

I know nothing about cars but my OCD has this raging need to throw everything back together and put it back in the hood. NOW.

[–]Jaybleezie 0 points1 point ago

I have never seen a v12 before. Thank you:)

[–]CndConnection 0 points1 point ago

The weird thing about engines is....

They're actually not complicated at all and it would be very simple for an adult to read up on it enough to fully understand how they work, and perhaps even do basic repairs.

It's just that no one (the vast majority of drivers) fucking cares anymore....can't be bothered, whatever.

Including me! I know a tiny bit about them and name most parts/know what they do but I couldn't fix my own motorcycle....at least I'm working on it.

[–]penguinhomey 0 points1 point ago

E-type Jag! Lovely car

[–]emqz 0 points1 point ago
