[–]piss_artist 52 points53 points ago

I actually run an orphanage in Rwanda, and I find this fucking appalling. What a piece of shit organization that must be if they use those kinds of tactics to ask for donations. These are exactly the sort of things that give good, honest, struggling organizations like ours, who have a really hard time every month raising enough to keep caring for our kids, a really hard time. This is why so many people are turned off to helping vulnerable children in developing countries.

I will say that any organization that is willing to spend the money on this garbage "campaign" must have a ton of money already and I imagine very little of what they raise ends up being used to care for the beneficiaries (the kids). I imagine they have a nicely decorated office in some big city highrise with plenty of nice furniture and cozy salaries for all their staff.

Man, fuck these guys.

[–]everdude 8 points9 points ago

"I find this fucking appalling..."

Says the porn movie editor.

[–]IronymarkJ 2 points3 points ago

I actually thought the same thing and was hoping someone from a REAL charity (like what you do) would speak up.

If they were really that hard up for money and needed help, I'd donate to the place that sent a plain white envelope and a small leaflet explaining their cause, not one with custom typesettings, graphic layouts and pull-on-your-heartstrings slogans.

Although text is not as visually appealing, explanations go a lot farther with people than guilt trips.

Thanks for being the person you are, Especially handling the level of stress you endure for hope of a brighter future for these kids.

[–]Captain_Salmon 3 points4 points ago

You should do an AMA ! edit: Tell them the Captain sent you, they'll know what that means.

[–]orangefoodie 2 points3 points ago

Out of curiosity, what is your organization? I'd like to contribute in some small way!

[–]RepostThatShit 3 points4 points ago

I bet that envelope feels duly sassed now.

[–]ItsTyrrellYo 208 points209 points ago

See, what happens when you get a letter from a charity is you throw it away. When you get a letter from a charity that uses aggressive emotional marketing, you throw it away and think "what a load of cunts".

[–]darklooshkin 38 points39 points ago

That's not being fair on cunts. Cunts are great fun to fuck with. These... people aren't.

[–]ItsTyrrellYo 31 points32 points ago

They're not people, they're marketers.

[–]iamtheowlman 44 points45 points ago

That's inaccurate. They're bad marketers. Good marketers come up with things like the Old Spice ads.

[–]Sub116610 2 points3 points ago

Why? I felt no more inclination to buy it after seeing those ads, I think they're highly ineffective to most viewers

[–]iamtheowlman 20 points21 points ago

You didn't. But if you're male, you're not the target audience.

The wives and girlfriends were the target audience - that's why he's talking to them.

[–]ITworksGuys 6 points7 points ago

But it is in your head. It is going to bounce around there for a long time. It is also a shared experience that people can talk about.

You may come upon a situation that makes you think of those ads. Maybe you see that actor later and think "Hey, that's the Old Spice guy"

Then one day, maybe years later, you will be at the store not even thinking hard about what brand of deodorant to buy, but your hand will drift to the old spice and toss it in the cart. You won't really think of it, you won't know why, but it will happen.

Or your wife will just buy it because she is about 1000x more susceptible to marketing than you.

[–]Classy_Debauchery 2 points3 points ago

As someone in the marketing department, I can verify. We are most definitely not people.

[–]Sub116610 1 point2 points ago

You see what I think you meant to put was "These people...aren't".

[–]darklooshkin 2 points3 points ago

Or "These... People... aren't." Text-based sneering is hard.

[–]Sokonomi 163 points164 points ago

Send back an envelope with your own face on it.

"Take my money, im used to it."

[–]iatecereal 50 points51 points ago

Inside, put in a random drawing of a cat and seal it with your tears.

[–]A_Higher_Porpoise 19 points20 points ago

ahh. the 7 legged spider, probably my favorite internet thing ever.

[–]airmanspaid 6 points7 points ago

Have you read his lost cat poster thing?

[–]ComixSE 14 points15 points ago

[–]Borbottio 2 points3 points ago

Well, getting emotionally pushed to donate some of your beer money to save someone's life isn't the same as dying because people don't want to give away some of their beer money.

[–]toddlersnake 296 points297 points ago

He`s probably dead by now. You can throw it away.

[–]redemit 137 points138 points ago

They have been using that same kid for at least 6 years.

[–]mystikarts 244 points245 points ago

He's a Nigerian prince now and needs your help.

[–]DerelictDiety 56 points57 points ago

He has much funds, but are tied up in bank because of tax problem?

[–]shitdick_mcaidsface 28 points29 points ago

No, he tried to trickle his money out of the country in these mailings, but everyone threw them away.

[–]KeyDeMexico 11 points12 points ago

What a twist!

[–]elshroom 6 points7 points ago

Plot twist: His country eats pennies.

[–]copyandpasta 6 points7 points ago

Ass pennies.

[–]Sonris 20 points21 points ago

Hey pictures are expensive.

[–]CarlFromAccounting 10 points11 points ago

I just love how they think by being honest and saying "70 cents of every dollar goes towards helping the kids," is going to help. So, you're basically taking a 30% transaction fee from starving children. Nice.

[–]NeonDisease 10 points11 points ago

You're right there with a camera crew! Why don't you just give him some food?

[–]CarlFromAccounting 2 points3 points ago

And some seeds for planting cocaine!

[–]Internet_Gentleman 3 points4 points ago

Ha! 70%. I guess it's technically helping kids when you're being paid to supervise people sending out envelopes.

It's maddening how much of the money gets tied up in "administrative fees". I can't remember off the top of my head, weren't the the pink ribbon people shown to be spending less than 20% of their proceeds on actual research?

[–]ckingdom 3 points4 points ago

I did!

(Context: this is my hand and driveway, and OP is an appropriately-named reposter.)

[–]Teotwawki69 62 points63 points ago

Right in the shredder...

[–]aifv 32 points33 points ago

I'm pretty sure I've seen posts about similar letters with nickels inside of them. Right in the garbage for me.

I won't ever give to one of these charities anyways after seeing how one of them treated my grandmother. She sponsored the same girl since she was like 6 and when she was 18, my gram sent her extra stuff for her birthday like a new pair of shoes. I guess the company was some sort of middle man and these kinds of things didn't go directly from my gram to the girl, but they intercepted the package and gave everything to someone else. My gram never gave them another dime.

[–]batquux 3 points4 points ago

You mean the girl existed? That's quite a twist.

[–]TonySki 48 points49 points ago

No way. I recycle that shit.

[–]h0lla 48 points49 points ago

more like, emotional blackmail in the mail. this is the type of shit codependent, immature, inappropriate and invasive people pull.

[–]iamadogforreal 37 points38 points ago

The worst is I'll give like 20 or 30 bucks to a random charity. Then they send me stuff every week for the next few years. I did the math, and those mailings exceed my donation. Then I realized all these non-profits exist to do their best to hook some guilty feeling rich person who can give 5 or 6 digits. So all small donors are essentially bait and make up the advertising budget to get these few rich people.

Now I give to charities that give directly like "buy a goat for this family" type stuff. A goat gets shipped out to a family. Done and done.

/I used to work in a major national charity. Major donors are all that mattered.

[–]gumpythegreat 5 points6 points ago

Hehe blackmail. He's black...and in the mail.

[–]YouPickMyName 17 points18 points ago

Out of all the commodities needed in 3rd world countries, I wasn't aware paper was amongst them.

[–]itsme_timd 12 points13 points ago

They need something to write snarky comments on to mail to the 1st world.

[–]MaximusTheDog 2 points3 points ago

Now you make me wonder with what do they wipe their ass?

[–]poo-poo 3 points4 points ago

They don't eat much so they don't poop much so they don't have to wipe their asses.

[–]reddiculon 2 points3 points ago

Pointless waste of resources when so many in need may be the point of this. Just guessing, though.

[–]darklooshkin 19 points20 points ago

"Throw me away. I'm used to it."

Oh good, at least I don't have to feel guilty about it.

[–]Zilvreen 34 points35 points ago

I think you mean Passive Aggressive Marketing.

Actual Aggressive Marketing

[–]youlleatitandlikeit 16 points17 points ago

That's incredibly shitty and exploitative marketing.

The truth is, the entire development charity industry is very problematic. Although it's been shown that relief organizations are often of vital importance in areas that are experiencing famine, drought, etc., it is also the case that many organizations whose purpose is larger development often have less success.

The changes that will keep children in Africa from dying are structural. I remember hearing a few years ago that there was basically no intra-continental transportation in Africa. Like if you wanted to go from the capital of one African country to the capital of another, you would have to take a flight from the first country to London, and then to the other capital -- in other words, there were no direct flights between African countries.

Many countries in Africa are actually growing more rapidly than those in Europe, N. America, or even Asia. Maybe the best thing would be to seek out products manufactured in Africa. Think of how economic conditions have improved (still not close to ideal, but much better than they were) the lives of people in China and India. The same thing can happen in the countries of Africa.

Also, and this is crucial, international poverty is often used as a way of blurring the reality of poverty locally. Which is to say, as unpleasant as it is to think about a child starving to death somewhere in Africa, it's way more comfortable than acknowledging that there may be a child just down the road from you who is also suffering from hunger.

If you have a limited amount to donate (and most people do), the best possible thing you can do is focus on the needs of your local area. They always need money. Not that those in Africa don't, it's just that distracts from the larger issue of global (i.e. everywhere, including here wherever here is) poverty.

[–]mrfantastic97 3 points4 points ago

The only things Africa needs is condoms and atheism.

[–]happybadger 4 points5 points ago

Maybe little pictures of Carl Sagan and a Swedish flag, some literature on LGBT causes, bottles of Mountain Dew: Code Red.

[–]comox 8 points9 points ago

Don't worry son, I recycle...

[–]HarvestMoonfan 20 points21 points ago

I hate those fucking things.

[–]TheUrbanHermit 12 points13 points ago

[–]ChunkBunny 8 points9 points ago

This is pretty crappy, but what ticks me off more than anything are the charities that won't stop sending you free crap to get you to donate.

I've gotten calendars, blankets, t-shirts, personalized stationary, stickers, mailing labels, newsletters on expensive glossy color paper, holiday greeting cards, umbrellas, pens, money (coins), and more. People just keep this stuff and throw the letters away. At least make it a ONE TIME free gift after a donation. These charities send so much crap that there are "frugal" blogs with pages dedicated to getting the most free stuff from charities.

The Humane Society sent me so much needless junk that it helped push my decision to stop donating to them. What a waste.

[–]Sharain 4 points5 points ago

Considering there is may be hundreds of thousand people who have donated money to charity this year, and the years before, I sure as hell can't see much change going on.

I wonder why...

Yes, sure, It might take a long time to get it all up to a good level, but it has been going on for over 22 years (my current age). Even with the local governments taking a lot of the money, you should be able to see some change after so many years, right?

[–]Toastlove 4 points5 points ago

Aid causes problems for Africa, it may help people in the short term but then they just get dependant on it.

[–]jimmytap 43 points44 points ago

Why dont they use the money they spent on this horrible ad to feed the poor children.

[–]Stroudeh 39 points40 points ago

They end up generating more money by sending out letters and doing things like competitions. But most of the money donated to SOME organisations end up paying for administration which is abit of a waste. Caritas is a good organisation which actually sends a majority of its funds straight to the people.

[–]redemit 16 points17 points ago

http://www.charitynavigator.org/ let's you find some relevant statistics for groups.

[–]nope_nic_tesla 13 points14 points ago

tl;dr it takes money to make money.

[–]sship 9 points10 points ago

People might be more inclined to help if they new those who needed it actually got all or at least most of the donations, which isn't the case.

[–]GladiatorBill 5 points6 points ago

This shit pisses me off. I totally understand the need for donations, but it just jades me to see these companies exploit pictures of 3rd world children and whore them out to invoke guilt.

[–]Elejcat 3 points4 points ago

This stuff just makes me want to throw it away even more... It's not okay to guilt people into donating money like that.

[–]Buscat 5 points6 points ago

Kony has a place for you!

[–]rizla7 2 points3 points ago

interesting. reverse psychology. maybe.

[–]Crazyh 4 points5 points ago

Nope, just trying to guilt you into giving money.

[–]rizla7 -1 points0 points ago

personally, i think we should fix the currency imbalances. ie: western currencies are overvalued. then we wouldn't have to gift at all, but until that time... let's just keep robbing the rest of the world blind? yea... how about... fuck that...

[–]Flemtality 2 points3 points ago

That kid is probably 37 years old if he's still alive.

[–]insaneacorn 2 points3 points ago

Did you mean passive aggressive marketing?

[–]Gamerhead 4 points5 points ago

But it is a repost.

[–]having_sex_right_now 3 points4 points ago

"I NEED ANOTHER GOATSE FAST!!"

[–]JacobTheHat 0 points1 point ago

These are pretty common in the UK. I tend to get leaflets from a charity for abandoned children every now and again that has a picture of a homeless kid on the front and the caption 'like this leaflet, [child's name] is used to being ignored.'

[–]Thefar 0 points1 point ago

Since it's used to it, why hesitate... ;)

[–]CoughTunt 0 points1 point ago

What fucking litter. If I ever get inspired to start sending my money to a stranger that I'll never meet, it won't be from this shit.

[–]Oed0 1 point2 points ago

[–]NailgunYeah 1 point2 points ago

Who wants some fucking Nesquik??

[–]98thRedBalloon 1 point2 points ago

I hate the idea that they can put any slightly scruffy-looking black child on an advert and call them impoverished to ask for donations.

This kid could be from anywhere in the world, not necessarily a place where poverty, starvation and war are happening.

[–]AaronTheAlright 1 point2 points ago

That kid probably has a lucrative career rating and pillaging by now... Poor Africa and its woes.

[–]IgnatiousReilly 0 points1 point ago

I got one of those. I don't usually bother shredding junk mail from charities, but I kind of felt obligated to shred this one. It was fun.

[–]reddithvmdisretarded 0 points1 point ago

The only thing that would change is that I would laugh while throwing it away instead of just throwing it away.

[–]Calber4 1 point2 points ago

*Passive aggressive

[–]Wingmeister -1 points0 points ago

Send your money and watch 85% get chewed up in admin fees and the other 15% go to the leader of the country they live in so they can buy a seat on the UN sercurity council and watch them plead with the west for money. (change to sarcasm font if you have it). sorry for spelling if it's wrong

[–]tiberiousr 1 point2 points ago

"Take your passive aggressive bullshit somewhere else."

[–]dereistic 0 points1 point ago

"That's the plan."

[–]EmeraldEmpire 1 point2 points ago

I love how they imply the notion that he has personally campaigned and been rejected by thousands of potential donors/foster parents.

[–]iscrew4ners 0 points1 point ago

Looks like they hired my ex-gf for their marketing...

[–]nervycrayfish 0 points1 point ago

In all my time on Reddit, this represents the first time I couldn't tell whether or not this was a repost or I received this in the mail too.

[–]sheravi 0 points1 point ago

It's usually pointless to give to most of these organizations anyway. The money will end up getting into the hands of warlords or corrupt government officials. Even if it gets to the children, most of the time they will end up being soldiers in wars anyway. My mother in law will never donate to things like this in Africa, but she does have a kid she donates to in South America. Different situation entirely.

[–]AgentFlynn 1 point2 points ago

That's why I shredded it, figured I'd give him a new experience.

[–]too_lazy_2_punctuate 0 points1 point ago

More like passive aggressive marketing.

[–]Ketsu 0 points1 point ago

Judging by the kids facial expression it almost looks like he's daring you.

[–]tawattwaffle 0 points1 point ago

And they probably keep mailing this to you every couple of weeks. Kinda like how this gets reposted every few weeks.

[–]CatrickStrayze 0 points1 point ago

How nice of them to exploit that kid.

[–]M_R_Big 0 points1 point ago

They teach those kids English?

[–]GitEmSteveDave 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I burn all my mail. The only person who could recover a burned document is MacGyver, and RDA and I are tight.

[–]wtfwjd014 0 points1 point ago

I doubt that kid speak a lick of english. That's false advertising. I saw we sue them for making us feel guilty. N

[–]maelfyn 1 point2 points ago

They know your white liberal guilt won't let you do it.

[–]MufasaJesus 0 points1 point ago

Think how much money they could save and send to 3rd world countries if they stopped advertising...

[–]Ephaxx 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the people in my local mall who go around asking people to sign up to sponsor kids and saying 'Do you want to give hope?' Makes you feel shit when you have to say no.

[–]Mephistophanes 0 points1 point ago

I think this marketing was the right choice because otherwise you wouldn't put it on reddit and nobody would have not seen it.

[–]TheUrbanHermit 0 points1 point ago

You got it, chief. Dueces!

[–]SirEnvelope 0 points1 point ago

Standard ultraliminal messaging.

[–]alekseykorzun 1 point2 points ago

99% of the time if such marketing is used money is going to line the pockets of VP/CEO/ETC of that 'charity'.

Most of the charities are a huge scam, ever wounder why there are so man damn charities for same cause? Because it's easy money.

They are using that child to get $$$$ and probably in 5 years he will get one meal.

[–]olivortex 0 points1 point ago

Big deal! I've got homeless people to ignore on my street.

[–]last_airbender_aang 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me alot of facebook

[–]ElCaz 0 points1 point ago

On reddit, we always seem to call openly aggressive things "passive aggressive," yet the one time something truly passive aggressive is posted, it's titled as "aggressive."

[–]jkbucksot 0 points1 point ago

Too bad they don't have paper shredders where ever the fuck that's from.

[–]Wisps -1 points0 points ago

The proper term would be "abandoned".

[–]DeplorableVillainy 0 points1 point ago

I like to burn those.

I didn't throw it away, I shredded it. That has my address on it!

[–]SimilarImage 1 point2 points ago

[–]ScrwdInNC 1 point2 points ago

Got this myself last week.

Tossed, just for being that aggressive. I'm sorry, but when TV commercials do the same thing, I change the channel. I'm not going to be made to part with my hard-earned by means of making feel like an ass-hat.

Want my money? Send me something appropriate, like "99.99% of all money donated goes directly to children in need," THEN I'll donate.

p.s. It'll never happen. Too large of a percentage of donations goes toward people that think up aggressive marketing campaigns.

[–]electricBuddha 0 points1 point ago

I would never throw you away... I'll recycle you so you can have a job picking through the detritus of my western privilege.

[–]MedievalKnieval 0 points1 point ago

I love this new auto-sorting junk mail!

[–]Canucklehead99 1 point2 points ago

I usually put these in a shredder. Then laugh, maniacally.

[–]Paulus81 0 points1 point ago

I remember getting a letter once that had a nickel taped in it. Supposing that since they sent me $ I'd have to send them some back.

[–]GoodStevening 0 points1 point ago

It'd be great to put "throw me away, I'm used to it" on a Boomerang

[–]mooose 1 point2 points ago

This is bullying. I will not support an organization that stoops to this.

[–]ears2theground 0 points1 point ago

nice try third world guy

[–]you_been_mangoed 1 point2 points ago

I donate to a few charities regularly, and some on a yearly basis (every Christmas). What annoys me is that when you do this, you get tagged as somebody who will possibly donate to lots of other charities too. Then marketing kicks in and you get ALL THE FLYERS. Stuffed mailbox all Christmas, and not from cards! Come on, I don't have unlimited funds!

But what bugs me the most is the groups who preemptively send you stuff (ie. a nickel, a sheet of mailing address stickers, christmas present tags) and then try to guilt you into paying for them. It makes me think of squeegee kids.

[–]gifforc 0 points1 point ago

[–]REDinSOXicated 0 points1 point ago

LOL KAY.

[–]GameMisconduct63 -1 points0 points ago

Business/Marketing major here. The specific term is called "guerrilla marketing" , it's very interesting stuff in my opinion.

[–]appleofpine 0 points1 point ago

I burn these, counter aggression with aggression.

[–]GhostintheAshes 1 point2 points ago

Damn, a guilt-tripping envelope. For your information, I was not in fact going to throw you away envelope, until I read that.

[–]Curtymcc -1 points0 points ago

I think you mean Passive Aggressive Market.

[–]NUA-667 0 points1 point ago

At least he had someone hold him before they throw him. :(

[–]Opium_War_victim 0 points1 point ago

I kept all of it and bundle it up. It is sold to recycle for cash. I donate the cash to children's rescue foundation.

[–]Dave_Your_Fave 0 points1 point ago

I work in advertising, and by all accounts, that's brilliant.

[–]chendamoni 0 points1 point ago

I am a strong believer in recycling, thank you very much.

[–]mtux96 0 points1 point ago

Poor children in third world countries...They are being turned into pulp and made into paper. What can we do to solve this problem?

How much is a stamp again? And paper and printing and handling and design and a staff and...

I get incredibly put off by these things. The Amnesty people who stop you in the mall are even worse.

Good, then I will.

And then I shred it, as an extra little fuck you.

Why don't they spend their marketing dollars online, where they can measure its effectiveness and ROI? I bet they are losing so much money on these failed marketing campaigns and have no data to back it up, so instead they start to patronize their direct mail respondents and lower their open rates.

*Passive agressive marketing.

Pretty sure ads like these were specifically designed to be a normally very shocking image, but since you're so used to seeing this shit on tv and ignoring it, you're conditioned to be desensitized to that sorta shit. So when you're seeing the same stuff happen on your way to work or whatever, you just act the same as if it's just something you just saw on tv and ignored.

They're conditioning us to be immune to the pleas of our suffering brethren instead of helping them and rising up to smash the system... or whatever.

Pack your bags, youre going on a guilt trip.

[–]Osiris094 0 points1 point ago

For the amount of money they spent on the envelop and packaging they could have fed that child.

Feed and indoctrinate into the religious mentality that systematically degrades more effective solutions to his plight, while feeling righteous and loving.

That being said, I'm still impressed by the ad and favor doing more to reach out and help.
