Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Why do people downvote you?

Some people like the High-Res pics!

[–]QuasarsRcool 2 points3 points ago

It seems like nothing posted in r/pics that makes it to the front page is hi res

[–]7wap 0 points1 point ago

Probably because the MIME-type is broken.

[–]Era_Ojdanic 30 points31 points ago

Is that Moraine Lake?

[–]loopynewt 7 points8 points ago

You're right. I don't know why you got downvoted. I was in the exact same spot that this picture was taken from 2 months ago. I recognize those dirt piles at the base of the mountain. I had an impromptu stone skipping contest with this Chinese guy who didn't speak any English. The lake is also known for those logs that float on the lake. They all come together at the other end and make a big logjam.

Here's a comparison shot from the opposite end of the lake. See the dirt piles on the left.

And finally, this is the closest I could find to a shot from the same spot as the OP. Pretty clear that its the same lake from this angle.

[–]engaffirmative 1 point2 points ago

The dirt piles are moraines.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moraine

I too was just there!

[–]apopheniac1989 2 points3 points ago

Actually, no. Those are scree. They're piles of rock fragments that have broken off of the cliff.

[–]engaffirmative 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps, but the official park rangers stated such. Canadians not know their stuff pssh.

[–]spyxero 2 points3 points ago

Wardens

[–]loopynewt 1 point2 points ago

Haha, that would make sense I guess.

Was the water still blue when you were there? I was there late August, and it was apparently not as blue as it was in July.

[–]engaffirmative 1 point2 points ago

It was more turquoise.

Super dependent on how the light hit it. Unfortunately I didn't have a very good wide angle lens, I was happy enough to see it in person, but I could never capture an image like the image in the OP. Would have loved to :( Good glass someday!

[–]loopynewt 0 points1 point ago

I always thought that the color in the pictures is enhanced with some photography or computer technique, but it really is that color. I was amazed.

[–]engaffirmative 1 point2 points ago

I truly is, it is because of the rock flour. Similar to the Tyndall effect.

[–]crazybusdriver 0 points1 point ago

sure looks like you have the correct guess.

[–]maddecentparty 1 point2 points ago

I thought that looked like home :) Well close enough that i can drive there and back in an afternoon.

[–]yiliu 0 points1 point ago

And the Big Beehive!

[–]WhiteN01se 7 points8 points ago

I misread the title as blue mountain state.

[–]jahusafex 1 point2 points ago

Glad I'm not alone

[–]magicpeanut 10 points11 points ago

"skyrim"

[–]MrMonsterDubEdition -1 points0 points ago

That is what I said...

[–]ZainOnyx 0 points1 point ago

I saw Donkey Kong Country 3.

[–]unabletodecideonname 3 points4 points ago

This is a background from Interfacelift.com I can find the actual link if you would like. As someone else mentioned it's Moraine Lake.

Edit: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2330/moraine_lake_panorama.html

[–]Bennyboy1337 4 points5 points ago

Just some words of advice, when tonemapping HDR scenery always try to cut out the sky and replace with a single exposure; tonemapped skys have tones of Haloing and the clouds look highly contrasted and unreal.

I also wish photographers used fusion instead of tonemapping more often, looks so much better.

Haloing: The white glow you see around the mountains (a result of HDR tonemapping).

[–]MrSparky 1 point2 points ago

I am so dissapoint - thought this would be my Blue Mountain Lake.

Lots of fond memories of summer in the Adirondacks as a youngster...

[–]Rappsy 0 points1 point ago

Aww, I had the same thought. Alas, a different grandeur.

[–]tlarham 0 points1 point ago

I thought the same thing!

[–]slateythree 2 points3 points ago

Looks like a guy coming out of the water, one of the ridges looks like a nose and eyes.

[–]regencyfishfinger 1 point2 points ago

That was my thought too

Looks like Phelps Lake, Grand Teton National Park. Shot from somewhere around, or on top of, a rock that people jump off into the lake.

[–]loopynewt 3 points4 points ago

It's Moraine Lake, 20 minutes into the mountains from Lake Louise in Banff National Park.

[–]jaytheworst 0 points1 point ago

naw. not phelps, looks more like glacier.

[–]chucktuna 0 points1 point ago

Misread that as Blue Mountain State, whatever. Party at the Goat House.

[–]toejam10 0 points1 point ago

I feel like it should be called "Blue Lake Mountain" instead

[–]Zadera 0 points1 point ago

It looks like a face... the nose is on the left....

[–]Cococarbine 0 points1 point ago

There is a 500 piece puzzle of this picture. I never finished it.

[–]X_StreetCred_X 0 points1 point ago

Blue Mountain State?

[–]cauldcuts 1 point2 points ago

Is it unhealthy to drink that bright blue water? I've always wanted to try alpine glacier runoff out curiosity. I want to know what it tastes like.

[–]draqza 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about once it has run down to the lake, but fresh off the glacier it is delicious. At the Ice Field Center along Hwy 93 between Banff and Jasper, you can either take a bus up onto Athabasca Glacier and drink the meltwater from the surface (although they did not tell us this until on our way back), or they have a faucet that pumps straight from the glacier melt.

[–]cauldcuts 0 points1 point ago

Does it taste any different than boring 'ol tapwater or bottled water?

[–]draqza 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember exactly, since it's been a couple years, other than that it was good and we filled up a gallon jug to take with us on the road. Of course, it was also super cold, which is how I prefer it but I guess that's not true for everybody.

[–]wiggen_tree 0 points1 point ago

It tastes like raspberries, as does all blue liquid. You never had a slushie before?

[–]killabee64 1 point2 points ago

I want to go to there

[–]racoonrick -1 points0 points ago

On the hill across the blue lake, that's where I had my first heartbreak!

[–]VaginalViolator -1 points0 points ago

Up on the hill across the blue lake

[–]hamlet9000 -1 points0 points ago

I swear to god I thought that was a Skyrim screenshot.

[–]Anderskp -1 points0 points ago

Not sure if real life or Skyrim

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Can you post the original? Great capture, but the sky is WAY over processed. I'd love to see a non-HDR version.

[–]DullestWall 0 points1 point ago

You just reminded me of Blue Mountain State, made me sad :(

[–]andysmyth 0 points1 point ago

I used to live there in the summers cuz my folks owned Moraine Lake lodge. Beautiful place.

[–]toounfunny 0 points1 point ago

Where is this?

[–]andywade84 0 points1 point ago

how do I get to here on skyrim?

[–]tico_taka 0 points1 point ago

[–]PentathlonJAdumbrate 0 points1 point ago

[–]wahlbanger99 0 points1 point ago

This is yet another place I have to add to my dream future travels list. Absolutely beautiful.

[–]shortbussdonky 0 points1 point ago

they should have named it blue lake mountain

[–]captdoodles[!] -1 points0 points ago

is this Skyrim modded?

[–]ElZarbo 0 points1 point ago

I've lived in Banff for 5 years and this is the most beautiful place ive ever been. About a 2 hour hike is the larch valley and sentinel pass.

[–]willynillyz 0 points1 point ago

MY FRIEND dropped my phone in this lake HAHA.

                   Saturation Level

0 ------------------------------------------------I--- 100

[–]opaeoinadi 1 point2 points ago

And a purple sky.

How does it look without the filters?

[–]Bennyboy1337 7 points8 points ago

Not filters, it's HDR tonemapping and over-saturation that causes that.

[–]otaking 0 points1 point ago

People really need to learn moderation.

[–]spilk 0 points1 point ago

The HDR fairy took a big dump on this one.

[–]darthliki 1 point2 points ago

This is Alberta, Canada isn't it?

[–]TheForrester7k 2 points3 points ago

moraine lake, ~15 minutes drive from lake louise

[–]oliveij -3 points-2 points ago

Is this in Blue Mountain, Ontario?

[–]ryandury 0 points1 point ago

haha, I wish. The closest thing Ontario has to something like this would be the "Barron Canyon' in Algonquin Park.

[–]kenef -1 points0 points ago

Try Tobermory Ontario : http://www.northamericanparks.com/bruce_peninsula_national_park.asp . No high mountains, but the lake is spot on.

[–]ryandury 0 points1 point ago

Truth. Both combined would make them almost like it.

[–]ThatDoesntEven 5 points6 points ago

I will not enjoy it, because it is poorly edited and wrongly titled.

[–]centerD_5 0 points1 point ago

Alberta resident here: This is literally what the lake looks like. Source, I've been there.

[–]wski 1 point2 points ago

You just took it from interfaceLIFT. Give credit where it is due.

[–]Smellyhobo101 0 points1 point ago

What texture pack is this?

[–]Oregonja 0 points1 point ago

10/10: would swim.

[–]yiliu 0 points1 point ago

O ho, you think so?

I jumped in one time, after a long, hot hike in mid-summer. And then I scrambled out as fast as humanly possible. It's like 1°C.

[–]TheBangeranger 0 points1 point ago

That mountain looks like a face peeking out of the water like a Navy Seal ready to do work on some pathetic cunts
