A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Thank you, now can this meme please die?

Seriously - this is the "easy" use for the Wii U's controller, any dev that doesn't put at least some of their UI onto this thing is just plain lazy, and should get chastised accordingly.

If you guys really want to unlock the potential of this thing, start posting real ideas, like the one the Penny Arcade guys had about 1 player being a DM and the other 3-4 players being PCs in a D&D game.

Or how about a game like Natural Selection where you're the "Commander" and the touch screen is map interface that allows you to issue commands to squads or teammates, or spawn supplies, build fortifications, etc, while your TV is your FPS view of the action running around blasting aliens?

Or a game where you can lay traps for other players like Spy vs Spy and trigger them using the touch screen?

[–]illuminerdi 692 points693 points ago

Or a game where you're a security guard for a museum and you're trying to catch a master thief, and the gamepad is a video feed of the security cameras and you have to cycle through them and keep an eye on them so you can narrow down which part of the museum the thief is in and then head there on your TV to catch them before they get away? Throw in things like alarm systems and traps that impede the thief's progress to give a more interactive element to the touchscreen then just watching and cycling video feeds.

[–]Knight0fSpades 370 points371 points ago

Or make the thief a second player who plays with a regular wiimote!

[–]DarkLordSchnappi 679 points680 points ago

TIL Reddit could make a kick-ass WiiU game

[–]LyingPylon 291 points292 points ago

I seriously doubt it. Ideas are easy. Development is hard and expensive.

[–]_1x 259 points260 points ago

10 PRINT "HELLO"
20 GOTO 10

[–]MiracleBlue 85 points86 points ago

Quick, patent it before someone else does!

[–]sdgj238423suey2 4 points5 points ago

Seriously, if programming was invented in today's patent environment, loops would be patented.

[–]MethMouthMagoo 3 points4 points ago

As well as inheritance, constructors, and arrays.

[–]jsmayne 11 points12 points ago

[–]jesusapproves 35 points36 points ago

NEVER USE A GOTO!

While that SOB into oblivion.

[–]shutUPandPLAY 25 points26 points ago

Lol, Someone obviously only uses high level languages. Try programming in assembly where jump commands are your only way of controlling branching and loops.

[–]henrymyers 7 points8 points ago

Who the hell would program a WiiU game in assembly?

[–]defenastrator 2 points3 points ago

Someone with incredible talent.

[–]imtoosexyformysock 5 points6 points ago

you sick bastard! how could program in assembly without going completely insane?@!

[–]graphitezeppelin 8 points9 points ago

Its actually pretty fun when you get used to it. More satisfying I guess.

[–]dahud 4 points5 points ago

In many older BASIC dialects, there wasn't much control structure beyond GOTOs inside of conditionals.

[–]cC2Panda 36 points37 points ago

I work on 3D animation and occasionally get people saying they have this great idea, but don't have the artistic or programming talent, but would share profits for the game they want to make. It's hilarious.

[–]LetMeResearchThat4U 48 points49 points ago

Isn't the idea at least a part of the project? Or is it any idea that sounds like it'll do okay is good enough now?

[–]elcapitaine 79 points80 points ago

Of course the idea is part of the project! The thing is....a lot of game devs tend to have a few ideas rolling around in the back of their minds....why work on your idea when they have their own and don't need to share profits?

The 'I have an idea, i just need devs and artists' folk tend to have a few problems as well....since theyre the 'idea guy,' they want to run the team and sometimes even micromanage since its their idea, their baby, and they want it to turn out just how they want it....except they have no idea how to run a dev team, what works and what doesnt, the concept of balanced gameplay, etc (think how many kids would love uber weapons in every level!!!!!! except the game would get boring so fast)

Their ideas also tend to not be so original too...a lot of times the idea tends to be 'X game except this'....yeah i couldve thought of that. And the worst is the 'would share profits'....that means that they have no capital, and they don't plan on paying you until they have profits to share which means that you have no income to feed yourself for the many months or years while they find the rest of the dev team and the idea goes from idea to plans to story to game, and even once it hits the streets you only get paid if it does well.

Ideas are part of the project, yes, but it takes more than just 'I have an idea!' to get a game off the ground.

[–]BCLaraby 28 points29 points ago

This is true of any artistic field. As a screenwriter I hear this all the time: "I've got a great idea for a movie, you just write it (subtext: and do all the hard work) and I'll share the profits with you."

Uh, yeah, let me go put on my excited hat.

Unless you're a well-known or well-funded or well-connected or up-and-coming Producer/Director (most of such people are not) I'm really not interested. I've got 4 or 5 of my own projects on the go at any one time, plus reading/giving notes on friend's scripts or client's scripts, plus any other number of favours I'm already doing for people I like or hope to be in business with.

To these great 'idea' people I say: Learn to break down story, write a logline, an outline, a treatment (or 20) before you start your first draft -- which will mostly suck -- followed by about 8-10 drafts where you discover what you 'really' wanted to say with your first inkling of an idea, then another 3-4 drafts refining it so that you can breathlessly submit it to your agent/client as a '2nd draft' where they will then proceed to tear apart all the subtext and intriguing characters and plot twists you've spent months concocting because, frankly, they may still suck (in which case you've gotten 'too close' to the project) or because there's not enough space to fit in the giant Tarantula they want your hero to fight in the climactic final battle (in which your touching Romantic comedy is now a balls-to-the-wall Action flick starring, oh... let's say Shia Labeouf) and, congrats, you get to do the re-write -- unless they don't think you have the cojones to make it happen, at which point you're off your own movie and another writer is brought in to make the magic happen.

But yeah, totally, I can't wait to hear your 'idea'.

[–]wjpeacoc12 6 points7 points ago

Great, let me tell you all about it! Haha

Out of curiousity: what's the worst pitch you've heard? Also, do you ever get surprised and hear a good idea (I'd assume not since someone with a well thought out idea would actually write it)?

[–]rostov007 6 points7 points ago

I have no experience with game development so I'm really asking, are there "screenplays" for games? As you said, it's one thing to have an idea for a game, or a movie, but the real contribution is not the IDE but flushing out the characters and story. How does it work on the game side?

[–]phuzle 3 points4 points ago

The point is, why would I put a few thousand hours into art and programming without any promise of profit? Even the best ideas can totally flop.

[–]challengeexcepted 3 points4 points ago

Programmer here. I went to a Startup Weekend and got stuck in a room with a hundred of these hucksters. They all have a "great idea" and want to press you into labor to do it while they split the equity. I went home to work on my own projects.

Just gotta wait for some kinda of homebrew thing so that we could

[–]jimmahdean 3 points4 points ago

[–]RageOverdose 25 points26 points ago

No, no, you'd want the thief to be on the Pad. That way, he has his own personal screen while the guard is using the Wiimote to control what's on the TV.

[–]JewBoySandler 4 points5 points ago

Everybody wins. YAAAAAAAAY!!!

[–]Mikav 13 points14 points ago

But then you'd see him easily.

[–]trenchcoater 4 points5 points ago

Actually the thief should hold the WiiU (where his actual position is shown), and the security guard should use the regular wiimote to change CC cameras on the TV.

Hell. The thief should have one wiiUmote (with his pos). The guard another one (with the traps), and the TV could be used to show the game to spectators - go go party game!

[–]Se7en_speed 3 points4 points ago

only work if they are on another system entirely

[–]atomic1fire 28 points29 points ago

Or a game where the player controls a fireman and the controller doubles as the fire hose for fighting fires.

They could call it Firefighter simulator: WII-U WII-U WII-U (cause the name sounds like a siren)

I'll see my self out now.

Actually a firefighter game could be not horrible if it's not shovelware, and actually has some variety.

[–]alexanderpas 24 points25 points ago

  • TV is overview of 16 video feeds
  • Gamepad is active videofeed. (Zoom, Pan etc.)

[–]Dmitri_Karamazov 22 points23 points ago

You just described "Double Switch" and "Night Trap" for Sega CD.

[–]DoesNotChodeWell 5 points6 points ago

I was about to say, fucking Night Trap 2 man!

[–]Mc-Kryptonite 4 points5 points ago

[–]zaudo 27 points28 points ago

What are you, some kind of nerd or something?

BLACK OPS 3 PLEASE.

[–]PhillipTrauma 9 points10 points ago

I think that was called "Night Trap"

[–]NIARTNAM 5 points6 points ago

But will it blend?

[–]Samdi 0 points1 point ago

How about the opposite, the TV screen is the map, or some other central information thing, while the controller screen offers the main player's view. And personal info.

Like a card game, where a player can see his/her cards, and the TV screen displays table.

[–]KernelKuster 85 points86 points ago

ideas, like the one the Penny Arcade guys had about 1 player being a DM and the other 3-4 players being PCs in a D&D game.

Yep, any couch-multiplayer game that requires some amount of privacy:

  • Card games, board games
  • Madden Football (play selection)
  • Etc...

[–]Mikuro 51 points52 points ago

Pokémon.

[–]tonypotenza 37 points38 points ago

Magic the gathering. commander.

[–]Guesty_ 12 points13 points ago

All of this.

[–]Wubbledaddy 16 points17 points ago

A WiiU TCG with you picking the cards on the gamepad and the battle playing out on the screen would be awesome.

[–]Poliwhirl_Friend 4 points5 points ago

Battle Revolution on Wii sort of did this by allowing you to connect your ds and choose your moves from there.

[–]manbeef 25 points26 points ago

Catan. This would be the absolute best platform for it. No-hassle setup, individual player privacy, yet having everyone in the same room enjoying the game.

Imagine it.

[–]servohahn 20 points21 points ago

If you guys really want to unlock the potential of this thing, start posting real ideas, like the one the Penny Arcade guys had about 1 player being a DM and the other 3-4 players being PCs in a D&D game.

I'd actually be really sad if something like this didn't happen. The Wii U could really revolutionize RPGs and do things with them that other consoles have never been able to do. Like most people, I fear that the new controller will start out as a gimmick but if we give it a couple of years, I'm sure they'll do awesome things with it.

[–]renegadecanuck 27 points28 points ago

That's what I thought about the Wiimote, but the developers never really did anything good with it. The best thing they did was let you turn it sideways and use it as a normal controller for New Super Mario Bros (which was a terrible name, btw).

[–]carlotta4th 13 points14 points ago

I hear that Zelda Skyward Sword actually implemented it interestingly, though. Enemies block from certain directions, and the player has to use strategy to swing their remote (like the sword) in the direction they want to attack.

But I haven't heard of too many other games people enjoy using that stupid remote in.

[–]0011002 2 points3 points ago

My son has a Wii so I got Force unleashed for it. I thought wielding a light saber would be fucking awesome. I was so wrong. It was like Jar Jar was controlling it.

[–]sublevelcaver 3 points4 points ago

The wiimote action in Skyward Sword started out great until you had to defeat an enemy with a stabbing motion. So many fairies were sacrificed because the remote didn't think I was holding it level enough...

[–]boathouse2112 7 points8 points ago

The wiimote didn't really have much application besides swinging and pointing. I think the secret screen/touchscreen could go a lot farther.

[–]The_Drizzle_Returns 6 points7 points ago

Depends on how many they sell. If the Wii U is flying off the shelves in a few months (after the fan base buys it up) then maybe. If its sales are not high then good luck getting any major dev house to do anything non-simplistic on it.

[–]dexmonic 15 points16 points ago

I would buy the wiiu just to play the D&D game.

[–]amerisnob 21 points22 points ago

Give EA credit; they use the screen in FIFA 13 for tactical changes on the fly (instead of pausing the game to do it) and for aiming free kicks.

[–]YeaDudeImOnReddit 50 points51 points ago

I'll just leave this here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMU

[–]DroidDoesnt 22 points23 points ago

I don't know why you are being down voted for this. Dreamcast did exactly this with the VMU. I used to play NFL 2K1 and got to pick my plays in secret. It was a great feature.

[–]reddit111987 2 points3 points ago

i was so fucking good at the Virtual Tennis series, i could beat people despite only looking at the stick-figure representation of the game that was shown on the VMU.

[–]DroidDoesnt 4 points5 points ago

Virtual tennis is the only reason I haven't sold my dreamcast. I have the newest version for PS3. It's good. Just not the same.

[–]misterbrisby 10 points11 points ago

Or a Star Trek game and the touchscreen is your tricorder, when you're on a planet. And when on board the Enterprise it's your control of the ships systems.

[–]bulletbillx 9 points10 points ago

I seem to be one of the few that liked FF: Crystal Chronicles. It was a great game, but ruined by all the additional gameboy crap.

[–]chewbaka025 5 points6 points ago

I loved this game too. Despite the gameboys making it kinda expensive, each one having it's own item/spell menu was just great.

[–]carlotta4th 5 points6 points ago

I wasn't fond of revisiting the same areas over and over again, but I liked the game in general... I loved the music.

[–]njayhuang 7 points8 points ago

I like the part where he decided to reupload the same picture to imgur instead of using the old url.

[–]Daveed84 7 points8 points ago

I don't think Reddit allows submission of the same URL more than once.

[–]njayhuang 4 points5 points ago

I forgot about that. Makes sense now.

[–]4GAG_vs_9chan_lolol 10 points11 points ago

He had to. You can't submit the same url multiple times to the same subreddit.

[–]Doomsayer189 2 points3 points ago

Why would he still have that url? Sure he could dig through his post history to find it, but it's usually easier to re-upload it than to find the original.

[–]Neebat 3 points4 points ago

"Anyone seeking more info" isn't the same as "Fucking repost". It literally means, "Here's more comments you might find relevant."

[–]HomerJunior 16 points17 points ago

No, it's a "friendly" way of saying "fucking repost".

[–]toomanylizards 2 points3 points ago

[–]BransonKP 25 points26 points ago

[–]bradygilg 2 points3 points ago

Really? Didn't all of this happen already when this system was announced?

[–]Jeffool 16 points17 points ago

Go with ME on THIS.

Dwarf Fortress U.

The left stick moves the cursor on your TV screen (the world). The right stick changes the size of the selected area for selecting squares. The D pad changes your menu options on your gamepad. Also, you can tap them. When you switch your gamepad screen from menu to world view, you can tap squares, long-tap to initiate the creation rectangles, use the face buttons and shoulder buttons for quick-scrolling, changing levels, zoom in/out, etc.

If Nintendo got one programmer and one artist to create a Wii wrapper for the game code, and create a few tileset options for ToadyOne to bring to PC (including a Nintendo exclusive Nintendo-themed one) toss it up on the Wii Store for five or ten bucks, and bam. The argument that Nintendo doesn't care about to the hardcore gets turned on its head. It's the "hardcore" (typically mainstream gamers) that suddenly aren't hardcore enough for Nintendo. Line up a few more titles and things just got awesome.

[–]kkjdroid 5 points6 points ago

You hear this, Nintendo? If you do this, no one can call you casual ever again.

[–]atomic1fire 6 points7 points ago

I'm pretty sure this would redefine nintendo hard.

It's a really good idea though.

[–]4GAG_vs_9chan_lolol 28 points29 points ago

You mean screen looking?

[–]z0mbiassassin 33 points34 points ago

surely you mean screen peeking

[–]strebalicious 15 points16 points ago

Screen gazers.

[–]4GAG_vs_9chan_lolol 25 points26 points ago

I can tolerate screen peeking and screen cheating, but screen gazing is just unacceptable.

[–]z0mbiassassin 3 points4 points ago

at least he isn't a monitor watcher

[–]VayaConDios 5 points6 points ago

Or a monitor monitor?

[–]CotST 2 points3 points ago

who monitors the monitor monitors?

[–]Sir_Von_Tittyfuck 4 points5 points ago

[–]wjpeacoc12 2 points3 points ago

That.......ASSHOLE!!!

[–]Equivocating_Clearly 4 points5 points ago

Seriously, the anti-screen watchers have really destroyed any defence for the subtle art of playing a game while looking at multiple screens by popularising 'screen-cheating' as the accepted terminology.

[–]4GAG_vs_9chan_lolol 36 points37 points ago

That's the joke.

[–]callmelucky 3 points4 points ago

What the fuck is going on here?? Is this entire thread a huge /r/circlejerk leak, or are there really that many people blown away by THE MOST OBVIOUS AND LAZY IDEA EVER FOR THE WII U GAME PAD?? I am genuinely confused, please help...

[–]jack12354 7 points8 points ago

I don't play a lot since I'm terribad at it (and others like it in general), but I'm pretty sure fanboys would wet themselves if the gamepad was used as a pipboy in the fallout series (blah blah blah licensing whatever)

[–]GammaRay96 17 points18 points ago

Please don't try to make terribad happen. It's not going to happen.

[–]sinsyder- 15 points16 points ago

It's not a bad idea for a word just not as streets ahead as some others. You see what I did there? That's a compliment and an insult, I call it a complisult.

[–]Rekilo 13 points14 points ago

You also sneaked in an explanabrag, nice.

[–]Brad13186 2 points3 points ago

This may be simple and not for everyone but I know I would love Pictionary as an online multi player game. Also, how sweet would a VATS system (Fallout 3) be on the game pad?

[–]DrewP367 0 points1 point ago

This image has been posted just as often as these stupid menu pictures. You're all just awful.

[–]krispwnsu 0 points1 point ago

So brave!

Wait for it...

[–]piclemaniscool 2 points3 points ago

I haven't been on /r/gaming today. I feel like I'm missing something. Can't quite put my finger on it. Something to do with Nintendo?

[–]ziphoward 2 points3 points ago

I think a heard a whisper... just the wind

[–]dwolls62 3 points4 points ago

This isn't helping to reduce clutter. And now I hate you.

[–]lemurstep 5 points6 points ago

One thing that makes me uncomfortable is if the game doesn't pause when you look at that menu. Also, re-orienting your view and focusing on something in the foreground is a lot of work for your eyes if you're playing for a long time.

[–]Unqualified_Opinion 128 points129 points ago

Please never drive an automobile on public roads.

[–]Cloudkid1227 7 points8 points ago

You literally made me shit, luckily I was on the toilet.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

No he didn't.

[–]Thundahcaxzd 19 points20 points ago

i like it when games dont pause to open the inventory, especially survival horror like dead space

[–]TwentySteven 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, that's actually a pretty good mechanic to put more pressure on the player, thus causing more fear/panic. It also increases the immersion factor.

[–]Buksey 7 points8 points ago

I hated this about Skyrim. About to die from a fire? Better open my inventory and eat 20 carrot cupcakes...sweet back at full health and breathe attack is still happening.

[–]Raito1337 1 point2 points ago

Damn, that's ingenious!

[–]Eoje 0 points1 point ago

You're that guy who doesn't like to have fun at parties, aren't you?

[–]plepoide 2 points3 points ago

That is just a picture of Sega Dreamcast..

[–]jb2386 -2 points-1 points ago

I love you.

[–]Zombiii 7 points8 points ago

Welcome to Costco.

[–]GammaRay96 -1 points0 points ago

Just think of the possibilities!

[–]ukittenme -1 points0 points ago

Shhhh!! It's a secret!

[–]tforge13 -1 points0 points ago

The Nintendo DS did this for some games, the first that comes to mind being Pokemon. It has all of the menus on the lower screen, in combat and out. I know that there're some other games that do this as well, depending on whether or not the menu is the part of the game that requires more touch input. *shrug*

[–]tonytroz 3 points4 points ago

Dreamcast VMU did it first!

[–]Marzto 0 points1 point ago

I can imagine that would drain the battery pretty quick, or at least cost substantially more for a controller that had hand-held console quality battery life.

[–]SockPuppetDinosaur -1 points0 points ago

Honestly, I just want the HUD put on that controller. The immersion factor would be amazing.

[–]pinkiepiepie -1 points0 points ago

Assassins creed III does this

[–]deepfunk -1 points0 points ago

im gonna downvote this so hard.

[–]Neskuaxa 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to see more games like FF crystal chronicles and four swords the console has some great potential.

[–]kickin-chicken 0 points1 point ago

What about moving through. Play selection to the handheld when playing Madden.

[–]imaami -1 points0 points ago

Any comment.

[–]Twinkie2012 0 points1 point ago

Nintendo: "Let's add Netflix and everything would be ok."

[–]Barnacules -1 points0 points ago

How about games where you pass around the Wii U master controller and it shows secret information on it that the others have to guess with on screen options. Like a Gameshow where each person gets to be the host each round.

[–]brickt0p 0 points1 point ago

[–]totalpsycho 0 points1 point ago

A game like Skyrim would really be great with all of the menus in your hands. Being able to keep track of all of your stats, inventory, and magic without pausing the game, or taking up the main screen would be great. And then swiping and moving to the map, and quickly swiping back instead of using the controller to slowly scroll through menus. Ah. That would be great.
