Webber reports from VIP dinner (imgur.com)

Being an American, in our defense, I have to say..... I just.... we..... she.....god damn it.

Here's a great story, I moved from Australia to the U.S. (North Carolina) as a 6th grader. Before I started the new school year in the states all the kids in my class had heard they were getting a new student from Australia. They thought that ALL Australians were aborigines and were expecting me to be black and not able to speak English. Turns out I was a huge disappointment for them, because I was a white English speaking Australian. I was continuously asked if I was only one of a few white Australians, as if white Australians were the minority. I never really appreciated this story when I was younger, but looking back it is hilarious.

I've been to the US several times because of my old job at the HR departament of a big multinational corporation. I've met hundreds of americans, and this happened with some frequence:
Some people would start to speak in spanish as soon as they acknowledged I was brazilian. If I said my spanish was pretty bad, they would look confused "but aren't you brazilian?"
[–]Alonsomojaka 8 points9 points10 points 8 hours ago
It's so embarrassing how little most Americans know about the world outside the US.
[–]zdroj 1 point2 points3 points 7 hours ago
this is true of any foreigners. As a Polish-American I have had some funny conversations with foreigners from around the world. For example, in Ireland I met some girls from China. Once they heard I live in America they were thrilled at how much of a badass I was. This suprised me so I asked for an explanation. They said I had to survive all the shootings that happen everywhere. Apparently they think Americans just shoot each other for no good reason. As in, on a daily bases an American participates or witnesses a gunfight.
[–]Alonsomojaka 2 points3 points4 points 7 hours ago
Well, that's understandable because the US has ridiculously high rates of violent crime. That is the image our country projects to the rest of the world.
[–]PerezYoritomo79 1 point2 points3 points 1 hour ago
We're not that violent. You're more likely to be murdered but less likely to be a victim of crime here in the good old US of A.
http://rechten.uvt.nl/icvs/images/Graph03.JPG
[–]Alonsomojaka 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago
Interesting.
[–]Räikkönenthatsnotwhatthatis 0 points1 point2 points 52 minutes ago
ehhm this only shows reported crimes, for several reasons people in the US often don't report crime, unlike most countries in Europe. The big problem about murders is that they are harder to hide than most other crimes.
So usually when you see that the amount of murders in a country is out of proportion to other violent crimes it is an indication that people in that country have little trust in the authorities of that country, rather than an indication of the actual crimes committed.
[–]AbsolutelySmashing 2 points3 points4 points 6 hours ago
What's more surprising is that they weren't amazed at all the Irish standing around them since they survived bombs left, right and centre.
(Hoping you were in the North)
[–]zdroj 0 points1 point2 points 5 hours ago
I was comfortable being in the Republic. You do have a good point. The Irish have seen more violence than your average American
[–]raizhassan 1 point2 points3 points 9 hours ago
Also: in Brazil they speak Portuguese, not Spanish.

I recently had a conversion that went like this:
Where are you from? Austria. Cool, me too. I live in Melbourne. You? ...
[–]Ayrton Sennawhatthefat 14 points15 points16 points 14 hours ago
As an Australian living in America, this has happened to me more than once. :)
[–]HamiltonHeyFlo 0 points1 point2 points 10 hours ago
As an English person who lived in America for many years and was constantly asked if I was French.....I have nuthin'
I do love Americans though, no offence intended.
[–]Ayrton Sennawhatthefat 3 points4 points5 points 10 hours ago
People usually guess that I'm British! It seems most Americans are almost unable to differentiate between English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Australian, Kiwi, and South African. And that's reflected in attempts to mimic the accents! :)
I find it funny, because most Americans have no problem identifying very different American accents, which I struggle to discern. But I guess it's just exposure. In Australia, you get a real mix of foreign accents on TV. Here, it's Americans 90% of the time. I'm not joking when I say that I have seen Australians, Scots, and Brits subtitled on TV here.
[–]HamiltonHeyFlo 1 point2 points3 points 10 hours ago
I think of all the accents you mentioned, Scots are still in my WTF are you saying range. It's just a garbled mess, can't even imagine how it sounds to an American!!
[–]zombiegodzilla 1 point2 points3 points 9 hours ago
i met a scot once in bali took me a couple minutes to figure out he was speaking english but after i tuned in i understood him no probs
[–]merlin3528 0 points1 point2 points 9 hours ago

[–]naturalalchemy 1 point2 points3 points 8 hours ago

[–]YJeezy 1 point2 points3 points 6 hours ago

I will stereotype, please forgive me.
I am pretty sure she was a middle aged (I mean older than 45) white woman. They ask the most stupid things, make the most stupid comments.
I met one, who has been to my country (Turkey). She was in Istanbul. She had a tour of Topkapi Palace, and Harem. She seriously asked me if we still have that Harem system going. And no, she was not asking about simple polygamy (which is also more or less non-existent). She was asking that Harem system as it used to be in Topkapi Palace.

For a lot of (stupid) people Australia is the long version of Austria
[–]VettelBelsher 52 points53 points54 points 17 hours ago
As an Austrian, I cannot tell you how many times I've had to correct American's. Worst was probably when I was on semester abroad in the US at a pretty decent university (was the winter semester), and my marketing professor casually asked me about my home country. (He knew I was from Austria)
He asked me if I didn't miss being home in the summer, since I'd miss out on going to the beach and the nice weather. I was a bit unsure on how I should correct him, so I just said that it was ok, since right now there was too much snow anyway and I could always go skiing the next winter. He gave me a very confused look.
I mean our tourist shops here sell T-shirts saying "No kangaroo's in Austria". That should tell you something about how many get the two confused.
[–]Bhima 25 points26 points27 points 17 hours ago
There are kangaroos Austria! One got out from the Zoo in Wien and went walk about.
Having lived in both Austria and Australia (and having owned the Australian version of that shirt) I find this ridiculously satisfying.
[–]VettelBelsher 9 points10 points11 points 16 hours ago
Haha I must have missed that. I bet there were some very confused japanese tourists in the city that day...
[–]FridayNightHoops 10 points11 points12 points 16 hours ago

For a lot of other people, some accents are very thick and unless you know the accent, it's very easy to hear Austria when someone says Australia. Especially coming from someone like Webber who doesn't enunciate his words all the time.
Edit: Looks like I upset some people by not joining the circle jerk. Still worth it.
[–]ayedfy 11 points12 points13 points 15 hours ago
An Australian family member of mine once received the same compliment. She responded with "yeah, we had to learn it at school".

[–]Gilles Villeneuvejonnyjm 12 points13 points14 points 17 hours ago*
I had quite a lot of respect for him when he spoke about Bahrain and remained one of the only (or even the only) drivers to do so.
[–]rquinn100 0 points1 point2 points 16 hours ago
What did he say about Bahrain?
[–]Gilles Villeneuvejonnyjm 8 points9 points10 points 16 hours ago
I can't find the exact quote but he essentially said we shouldn't be going and how it shouldn't be about driver safety and more morals and the people of Bahrain.

[–]Räikkönengsrt 26 points27 points28 points 16 hours ago*
Stop downvoting him, what he says is true. The south is known for many things, but their education system is not one of them.
Edit: as I typed that, his comment was at -1.
[–]Ayrton SennaPorco_Rosso 41 points42 points43 points 16 hours ago
It's worse than that. The Texas school board drags down education standards for the entire fucking country because the textbook industry is forced to cater to their idiotic ideas.
[–]Räikkönengsrt 18 points19 points20 points 16 hours ago
Okay, so maybe they are known for their education system, but in a negative context..? Well that's depressing.
[–]Ayrton SennaPorco_Rosso 14 points15 points16 points 15 hours ago
Incredibly depressing.
[–]Ayrton SennaW00ster -2 points-1 points0 points 13 hours ago
You say this as if it is something unique to the south - it isn't, it is a US problem not a South problem!

Time for a story!
So I was in Cincinnati hanging out with a friend who was doing his MBA (International MBA). For 6 weeks they send you to some random country in Asia or Europe for the int'l bit. So this chick, who was in the class, asks if they speak English in England. Of course, everybody thought it was a joke, but she asked again. Anyway, she got the answer and then she goes ahead and writes it in her notebook. The next question was whether they speak Belgian in Belgium. But for that she can be excused. Although I was surprised she know Belgian was the adjective for Belgium and that Belgium is in Europe (might've read in the manual though).
[–]csh8428 75 points76 points77 points 17 hours ago
Well they are in Texas.

Happened to me too. The conversation went "your English is very good, where are you from?" "Britain"
[–]Vettelc3judge 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago
To be fair, Scots speak a whole different English than the rest of the world. My grandfather has lived in Canada since the 50s and some people still have trouble understanding his accent
[–]DaisyDoodles 3 points4 points5 points 14 hours ago
It was written English, through email. I don't even have a very think accent, and I only use a few words that are specific to Scots.

I can top that, I moved to Kentucky from England and a guy asked "where are you from?" I said "The UK" he said "you speak pretty good English" I said "I am English" this got a look of complete puzzlement, I tried to explain that England was part of the UK in the British Isles but he looked like he was going to have a brain aneurysm so I gave up. Texan here, I just have to say one thing. This woman being at a VIP dinner probably was just some rich American woman and not a Texan (Most people at these races are just rich folks). This isn't a problem with just Texans, sadly we've a lot of idiots in our country and in all states.. Most of the people at these races are very rich, a guy from Dubai bought out one of the most expensive hotels in Austin and a few rich folks tried to purchase the downtown hotels.
