How does someone let it get that bad?

[–]Vitto9 171 points172 points ago

I think I can shed a little light on this.

When I was younger, this would happen to me a lot. We were poor when I was growing up, so we had to make due with what we had for as long as possible. This never happened in the summer because I grew up in the south and almost never wore shoes in the summer. But once shoe season rolled around again, the ingrown toenails came back.

I would wear shoes that were far too small for me because my mom couldn't afford new ones. When the ingrown toenail would start, I would play "bedroom surgeon" with a pair of nail clippers and some needle-nose pliers. I'd clip the nail and peel it back as far as I could, and then rip it out with the pliers. As you can imagine, this was a really bad idea that just resulted in it getting worse the next time. On rare occasions it would work, but most of the time it would just be a temporary relief (accompanied by a lot of bleeding). I would continue my self-removal for months at a time until it eventually just got to be too bad for me to cut out on my own, and we had to go to the doctor's office to spend money that we didn't have (no insurance... poor people, remember?) to remove an ingrown toenail. When the doctor was done, I had a thin bit of nail down the middle of the toe, but nothing on the left or right, due to the removal.

The smell is horrible. I can't describe it, because I've never smelled anything else like it. The toe oozes and bleeds all day, so my socks would stick to it when I got undressed for my bath at night. Even the slightest bump against anything caused excruciating pain and increased bleeding/oozing. Someone stomped on it once and I was in tears for what seemed like an eternity. My calf was throbbing from the pain.

This is why I have absolutely no problem with socialized medicine in America. I know first hand what can happen when you don't have insurance and can't afford a simple toenail removal procedure. I had to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks just to kill the infection so that the doctor could remove mine.

Edit

Looking at the picture again, I remembered something else. You see how the skin is all shiny and pink on the right, but it's dull and flat on the left? The left side is several layers of dead skin. I used to peel the dead skin off in chunks, not unlike peeling a scab. Doing so allowed the infected flesh to expand a bit more, and it was a mild relief to the pain. Unfortunately, peeling it off required touching the toe, which caused little bursts of pain every time I put any pressure on it. I learned to be very, very careful when picking at the dead skin. Eventually I was able to peel it back with minimal pressure on the toe itself.

None of this edit helps explain the toenail, but I figured that being /r/WTF, someone might enjoy a couple more disgusting details.

[–]HurrImaDurr 38 points39 points ago

As someone who has had ingrown toenails as a kid, perhaps not as badly, but still, I applaud you for your ability to perfectly explain those horrors.

[–]Vitto9 13 points14 points ago

Thanks. I enjoy telling stories. Unfortunately I spent so much time remembering my stank-foot that my toes have started hurting. Stupid psychological pain.

[–]JonnyBlazeRSP 9 points10 points ago

Same. I was known to always have bloody socks by my friends. :(

At one point I had missed a piece when removing one and a sliver grew through my tow and came out the bottom. That's when I hit the doctors.

[–]--Heisenberg-- 55 points56 points ago

As a non-American I think it's terrible you don't have UHC, for exactly these reasons. You should only have to worry about your health, not your healthcare.

[–]Vitto9 34 points35 points ago

I agree with you 100%. We spend so much time shouting about how great we are, but when it comes to taking care of our citizens, too many people seem to be content with the "I got mine" mentality.

[–]RowingPanda 23 points24 points ago

Completely agree. My husband was very poor growing up. Once while climbing a tree a branch (at least an inch in diameter) went completely through his hand. His mom poured some hydrogen peroxide on it and wrapped it up. That was all she could afford to do. Absolutely ridiculous. He still has a nasty scar.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 16 points17 points ago

Ah, but at least he had lots of freedom, right? :/

[–]The-Reverend-JT 7 points8 points ago

I agree completely. As much as the NHS can be inefficient to say the least, I dread to think what Britain would be like without the primary and secondary care we have.

[–]CattyMac 2 points3 points ago

Upvoted cause of your very boss name!

[–]mediaG33K 7 points8 points ago

I had a permanently ingrown toenail on my right big toe for years. It got to the point where I had to go to the doctor. Her solution? Rip that fucker off with some needle nose pliers. Never in my life have I felt such pain or such hatred. That was the only time I ever had the overwhelming desire to physically harm a woman.

About 6 months later, my toenail grew back, ingrown worse than ever (it almost popped out of the bottom/side of my toe). We didn't go back to her, we went to a podiatrist the second time. He actually had to do some reconstruction on my toe so the nail would grow properly again after he fixed it. He cut out the right side of the nail, and I watched the whole time because he shot my whole foot full of some sort of awesome numbing agent. It's so strange seeing your own flesh being sliced and not feeling it. The best way I can describe it is it sends your brain into mental vertigo, you know you should be in pain, your brain is telling you that you should be screaming in agony, yet nothing. The nail was basically back to normal, no more ingrowing at all. Then I accidentally stub my toe on some lumber stacked by our stair case in the house (we were renovating). Nail comes most of the way off, and the only thing I can do is pull it off entirely. I wanted to die. It grew back all funky, now it's roughly a quarter inch thick and shaped exactly like a talon. It's only connected at the point it grows out of my toe now, and any sort of little snag will take it off again. I've snagged it on blankets, the inside of my sock, the inside of my shoe, the last time it came off I was simply running, the pressure from the impact of my toe hitting the ground tore it loose.

I wised up about a year ago and started taking a hack saw blade and cutting that fucker off right at the base. I take a slip of paper and slide it under the nail til I hit the anchor point, mark my cut like you would on lumber, and start cutting. No more snagging and now I can run again.

Edit: spelling.

[–]Vitto9 4 points5 points ago

Now imagine doing the "rip it out" method on yourself. As a kid. For months at a time.

I watched the doctor do my surgery too. He kept telling me that I shouldn't watch, but when he made the initial cuts and it started gushing blood I busted out a classic young-teen "Coooooool!". After that he just shook his head and kept slicing. You're right, it's completely surreal watching someone hack away at your flesh while you feel nothing.

[–]mediaG33K 1 point2 points ago

I never did the rip it out method. I did the rip it off method several times though after it grew back as a fucked up, barely attached talon. My toe will never be normal again, but I'm ok with that now. I used to be self concious about it until I stopped giving a shit.

[–]lindzasaurusrex 2 points3 points ago

Why don't just have a podiatrist burn the shit out of the nail bed? Right where it grows out, that way you don't have to fuck with it at all. Also, the whole talon-shaped toe nail thing, and subsequently getting ripped off multiple times, had me gagging like mad. D:

[–]mediaG33K 0 points1 point ago

It's manageable as it is, and I can't afford the procedure (American health care is fucking expensive...). I cut it back about once every 6-8 months. Remind me in about 3 more months and I can post pictures of it pre and post cutting.

[–]Tigrael 1 point2 points ago

Fascinating. Would you mind posting pics?

[–]mediaG33K 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately I have none of the surgery/aftermath, but I can post some of what it currently looks like. It'll be another couple months before I have to take the hacksaw to it though, I cut it back almost all the way and it takes forever to grow (thankfully).

[–]pmaculate 1 point2 points ago

I actually had an ingrown toenail removed twice, grew back both times.

Third time, they removed it and cauterized the nail so now I no longer have a big toenail on my left foot.

[–]mediaG33K 0 points1 point ago

The podiatrist cauterized the side that ingrew and solved the problem. Until I ripped it off again and it grew back all funky...

[–]No_Please_Continue 4 points5 points ago

My brother had this problem. One day our cat stepped on his toe, he got so mad from the pain he threw a flip flop at me, because I was the one that "scared the cat into running on my toe".

[–]Vitto9 4 points5 points ago

The pain is intense. I understand the irrational anger.

[–]No_Please_Continue 2 points3 points ago

I understand now that I have somewhat of a similar problem (It's nowhere near what his was like, though) but back then I was an 8 year old little girl and that incident made me cry for about an hour straight. Haha

[–]Jimbojib 5 points6 points ago

I have a similar experence but only once did I have a REALLY bad ingrown toe nail and one night I realised it was so bad that my blanket over it was too painful to sleep, so I put a knife down the side of the toe (under the nail) and lifted it up which was probably one of the worst pains in my life and hurt so much that for some reason my mouth started filling with spit, then it finally came out and it was kinda like a long spike at the bottom and around 1cm deep the rest of the way, so I cut off that bit and it was fine in a few days, if a bit disfigured. it returned once but I got rid of it before it got too bad, the only down side is it bleeds a lot, even with next to no touching. For me, a few seconds of extreme pain is better than months of slightly-less-than-extreme.

[–]Chinamerican 2 points3 points ago

I've had this happen to me as a kid and I could barely walk on it. Part of it is the anatomy of the nail; if the beds are curved (like the one in the pic), it makes it more likely to happen since it's harder to cut straight across.

I got the surgery later as an adult where after draining the thing, they just cut the part that curved in and cauterized it so it won't grow back.

It probably helped that I got into ballet later in life and was very diligent about healthy feet. My toenails would just die and fall off sometimes so it wouldn't even be an issue.

[–]Vitto9 4 points5 points ago

I don't mean to offend, but your non-nonchalance about your nails dying and falling off made me do this face http://i.imgur.com/qFBgH.gif

[–]Beastybeast 2 points3 points ago

I submitted this to /r/bestof. Thank you for the awesome comment.

Edit: it seems that since this is a default subreddit, I can't submit your comment to /r/bestof. What a shame.

[–]moonflower 3 points4 points ago

You can submit it to /r/defaultgems instead :)

[–]Vitto9 6 points7 points ago

The first time someone wants to /r/bestof one of my comments and it's in a default subreddit.

OH CRUEL FATE!

[–]zrs42160 2 points3 points ago

Everything you just described was exactly how I my in grown toenails used to be. The smell, the sock sticking, the pain. I now have no big toenail.

[–]Vitto9 1 point2 points ago

Thankfully humans don't really need toenails anymore now that we wear shoes all the time, but I'm willing to bet you get lots of questions about the lack of toenail.

Ugh... the SMELL. It's fine. I didn't want to eat today.

[–]zrs42160 1 point2 points ago

You called it. I cannot count the number of times I have been asked about my toenail-less toe.

The smell...Let's just forget about the smell.

Here's to a ingrown toenail free life (hopefully)!

Cheers!

[–]Lampshading 1 point2 points ago

I used to have the same problem till I could finally afford a doctor. I used to cut the sides out with a knife and nailtrimmers and pick at the skin in my free time. I wear a sandals whenever I can to avoid the problem of squished toes.

[–]mojorisin2592 1 point2 points ago

This may seem like an odd question, but why were you poor? What jobs did your parents have, were they educated, etc etc

[–]Vitto9 4 points5 points ago

My mother was a waitress, and my stepfather was a temp worker. My mother never finished high school and my step father didn't even make it to middle school. He never learned to read and is an alcoholic and got so strung out on drugs a few years ago that he had to have his leg amputated.

My mother has a habit of picking the worst men she can possibly find (my father being the best of the bunch, and he wasn't exactly a winner back in the 80s). Some of the more notable ones:

  • "Big Mike" - A very tall man (He had to remove the T-tops from his IROC to drive comfortably) that said he couldn't be with a woman that had kids. In response to this, my sister and I lived with my grandmother for a few years. Luckily we were too young to know that we were there because dick was more important than children in my mother's eyes.
  • Rob - an abusive, incredibly overweight man that once kicked me in the stomach for mocking him during a water gun war. I was 7.
  • Mike - A man that was living with his alcoholic father when we moved in with him. It wasn't uncommon for his father, "Rabbi", to get so drunk that he thought dancing naked in the cul-de-sac was a good idea. Seriously, it was like a weekly thing with him. Eventually we moved out of his father's house so that we could move in with his mother. I wish I was making that up.
  • Billy - The drug addict/alcoholic I spoke of initially. He got mixed up with drug dealers in my hometown, got arrested, rolled on the dealers, and then moved to a different state leaving my mother and 2 brothers to deal with some very angry drug dealers on their own.

We spent most of my childhood moving around constantly. I was in a different school for every grade until I got to high school. I lacked the social skills to develop meaningful relationships with people, because I always figured that the next move was coming soon so there was no reason to try and make friends. I did learn how to make people laugh, because that seemed like the best way to start my temporary friendships. Unfortunately, my humor wasn't enough to distract people from my old clothes, so after they stopped laughing at my jokes they started laughing at my Wal-Mart shoes and thrift store clothes.

But now that I'm an adult, I wouldn't want any of it to be different. My childhood made me the man that I am today, and if any small part had changed I might not be where I am right now. Diversity and poverty made me appreciate the things I have more than some people, and once I got to "the real world" it wasn't nearly as scary as I had expected it to be.

I hope the story that you didn't ask for answered your question. I should also stop talking so much and go watch Enchanted with my kids.

[–]mojorisin2592 2 points3 points ago

Are you more educated and a harder worker/better decision maker than your parents were? Are you able to pay for health insurance?

[–]Vitto9 6 points7 points ago

My education stopped after high school.

I joined the Marine Corps at 17. I was active duty for 9 years. I now work for Northrop Grumman doing software QA for the Paladin weapon system. I have a decent sized house with a kick-ass man cave. My family has full medical, dental, and vision insurance. My kids always have nice clothes and shoes to wear, and I bought my wife a new car yesterday because I got tired of listening to her bitch about how much she didn't like the one she had.

Considering my background, I think I've done alright.

[–]Less_than_5 1 point2 points ago

Write a book... 10/10 would pay to read.

[–]Randy-Panda 1 point2 points ago

I too have had multiple ingrown toenails on a level as bad as yours and in the photo. It's horrible, I had to start wearing sandals to school and it had to be bandaged every day, I got bullied too, so every now and then people would kick it slightly, knowing that even the smallest bump made me scream with pain and fall to the floor clutching my foot. It used to get stuck to my bed sheets and my socks. And peeling it away from my bed sheets took forever if I wanted to make it painless. I had one of the right side of my left two, we went to the doctor and we dicked around with different medicines for about 4-5 months, and then it finally got so horrific ( the smell, dear god, the smell is like nothing you will ever smell again ) that the doctor asked to perform a wedge resection on my toe. Well that was great, we had medical insurance so that ended up paying for it. The next year I got an ingrown toe nail on the led side of my left foot and the right side of my right foot. We only waited 2 months to see how bad it could get, then we had the operation, another Wedge resection. This time they did the other side of my right toe, to prevent the inevitable happening. My big toes look very messed up now, but I'm glad they are fixed. But you good sir, please take this upvote, and know that there in a man in New Zealand who feels your pain. But can only imagine what it would be like to have to pull it out with pliers. I salute you.

[–]Vitto9 1 point2 points ago

Ripping it out with pliers in my bedroom seemed like a good idea only because I was young. Had I known that I'd end up with a swollen, infected, stench-pumping toe like the one in the OP I never would have done it.

But then I wouldn't have the story, and what good is living to be old and grey if you don't have good stories to tell?

[–]Randy-Panda 1 point2 points ago

Oh I can't wait to tell all my kids and grand kids of the time I got two horribly ingrown toenails. I'm kinda glad I had them though, they raised my pain threshold, I walked around with them so much at school that I ignored the pain and stopped feeling it. But I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.

[–]tessiegamgee 0 points1 point ago

Epsom Salts. Hydrogen Peroxide.

Since my toes looked like yours when I was in middle school, I'll never forget the relationship between these two things again.

[–]xiscenequeenix 1 point2 points ago

My right toe gets like that. Not as bad, but I do enjoy squeezing it :p hurts like a bitch, but its just so satisfying..

[–]Vitto9 1 point2 points ago

Didn't think I'd have to use this gif twice in the same thread. http://i.imgur.com/qFBgH.gif

[–]xiscenequeenix 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha

[–]tuckmyjunksofast 1 point2 points ago

Shoes are cheaper than a doctors visit. If this story is true then your Mom had some issues.

(I too grew up dirt poor in the South, so no inter-class elitism is present here.)

[–]Vitto9 0 points1 point ago

It's true, shoes are cheaper than a doctor's visit. But as I said, we didn't have the money for either one. Nothing I've said is untrue, and you're correct about my mom having issues.

One cold day in winter I had to wear ripped up sweat pants underneath my ripped up jeans because "You'll be fine. The holes are in different places." I had forgotten about that day until just now.

[–]tracaine 0 points1 point ago

I had them this badly at school. I still remember dreading gym class because I was scared people would step on my toes. The toes of my socks were always covered with blood. I eventually had to have mine surgically removed at the roots on both sides of the toenail. They weren't supposed to grow back but did for some reason. My mother had the same thing when she was younger and I was always told it was genetic. To this day I don't know why my parents let them get that bad. We had health insurance and they were well aware that I had the problem. I guess they just didn't care.

[–]CastleOvGower 0 points1 point ago

Sick dude.

[–]Faceless428 0 points1 point ago

I hear ya man. I had the same problem, My family was poor and we were also in the south. Luckily, we live so deep in the south that we could travel to Mexico and have the toenail removed for $40-80. I don't think the doctors in Mexico are as bad as everyone makes them seem, you just have to know who where to look.

[–]one85 36 points37 points ago

I'm guessing this belongs to a morbidly obese bed-ridden person. There's probably some more treats to be found on their body.

[–]Vitto9 24 points25 points ago

Not necessarily. I was a scrawny kid and my toe looked almost exactly like this at one time. Shoes that are too small plus no insurance to get it properly taken care of will result in what you see above.

[–]LDukes 19 points20 points ago

No insurance?

I grew up watching my dad dig these out of his big toe all the time - finger nail file (the kind with the hook on the end), some small clippers and cotton gauze.

Granted, it wasn't exactly a permanent solution, since as I said: I watched this happen all the time...

[–]ANiceChap 11 points12 points ago

My dad's permanent solution: don't cut your your nail on the sides. Cut your toenail so it's square, and the sides go out further than the nail bed.

[–]CmdrCarrot 11 points12 points ago

That doesn't work for everyone. Usually when people have a reoccurring problem with ingrown nails its due to the natural shape of how the nail grows from the nail bed. No amount of proper trimming will fix that.

[–]PR0FiX 3 points4 points ago

Agreed. Mine started out of no where. The end of the nail was square and clearly past the end of the toe.

Most people don't understand that it can happen anywhere along the nail up until the nail matrix and is near impossible to fix yourself.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 0 points1 point ago

mine started when I started wearing steel toe capped boots, the boot would compress the nail and it ended up ingrown, it was as bad as the OPs picture my solution,

  1. drain off the fluid

  2. trim back the excess skin with scalpel(around the infected area)

  3. score the nail at 1/4 of its width both sides

  4. using needle nose pliers twist off the outer edges of the nail

  5. bath the foot in disinfectant twice a day for the next 2 weeks and keep it open to the air as long as poss each day and keep it covered in antiseptic cream etc when I had to wear my boots

[–]rahtin 0 points1 point ago

Mine was about 1/100th as bad as the OP, and I was already starting to limp. The top layers of skin started bursting and I was losing mobility. If I let it get worse, I can't imagine that it would have looked anything like the OP for at least another month or two.

https://si0.twimg.com/profile_images/825658942/sspx0019.jpg

My solution is to just stuff a small piece of paper towel under my nail and force it to grow upwards at the first sign of discomfort. It's been working for a couple years now.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 0 points1 point ago

I have a pretty high pain threshold and I could put up with it, going to the doctors was out as the times I was working and the times they were open collided, I cycled 4 miles to work, did a days work (apprentice mechanic) then cycled home for months until one saturday morning I woke up to my toe being nearly twice the size it should have been

[–]dgx2000 2 points3 points ago

Correct if you go to the podiatrist he is going to do this and tell you to cut your nail square at the end yourself.

[–]eru88 2 points3 points ago

yeah but the guy in the picture does it like that it seems. Maybe it didn't work for him.

[–]2a3 0 points1 point ago

Looks as if to me that he waits months upon months to even cut his toenails.

[–]gilbertsmith 1 point2 points ago

This.

People tend to trim their nails like this:

/---\

This is bad. It encourages the nail to grow out to the sides like you see in OP's pic.

[–]MikeTheInfidel 4 points5 points ago

Nails do not grow that way. They can't. They grow directly straight out from the nail root, not outward from the edge of the current nail. An ingrown nail is caused by something going wrong in the root.

[–]JustRuss79 2 points3 points ago

If you cut the nails wrong on the end and your toe heals over that area or swells, the nail then digs into the skin when it begins growing again.

80% of the time that is the problem (tight shoes during healing don't help either), not something genetic. Another 10% of the time it was stubbed/cracked somehow and grew back wrong, if you take care of it correctly it will eventually fix itself (mine took years after I broke by toe and cracked the nail in half all the way to the root)

I'm not saying they can't "just grow wrong" like you suggest, but that is a small percentage.

[–]CmdrCarrot 8 points9 points ago

Usually when people have a reoccurring problem with ingrown nails its due to the natural shape of how the nail grows from the nail bed. No amount of proper trimming will fix that.

[–]Beastybeast 2 points3 points ago

I promise you: the amount of people who have ever gotten an ingrown toenail due to something they did themselves is a tiny, tiny minority.

[–]Vitto9 0 points1 point ago

Once we went to have it removed by a doctor, it was fine. He ripped it out and cauterized it so I never had to worry about it again (on that toe).

[–]mrjackspade 2 points3 points ago

I'm all for universal health care but I just want to chime in and say that going to the doctor to have mine fixed did nothing, while the permanent solution for me ended up being to STOP trimming it, and just let it grow through the top of my toe. Now I have little grooves the nail grows through!

[–]Vitto9 0 points1 point ago

That sounds both incredibly painful and kind of gross.

And now I want to see these toe grooves.

[–]Chinamerican 0 points1 point ago

I got the surgery where they just cut off the side that digs into the flesh and cauterized it so it wouldn't grow back. Best decision ever.

[–]CmdrCarrot 0 points1 point ago

No. The swelling and whatnot are due to infection. That's really just a normal ingrown nail that is wickedly infected.

I was a small skinny 12yo and got infected ingrown nails that looked like that.

[–]GoGoGadge7 0 points1 point ago

What?

You mean like a chocolate candy?

[–]Priestpwnage 2 points3 points ago

Just go ahead and lop off the toe to save time and effort

[–]phildo54 0 points1 point ago

Or just drop something heavy on it and let the nail fall off!!

[–]FUCKAFISH 7 points8 points ago

I guess they didn't think that a problem was afoot

[–]Smeagol3000 -1 points0 points ago

I toed him to get that thing checked out.

[–]FUCKAFISH -2 points-1 points ago

I guess heel never listen.

[–]Stekpannadeath 0 points1 point ago

He saw himself defeeted.

[–]BitterDivorcedDad -2 points-1 points ago

He's the sole person who can take care of himself.

[–]jedcaum 4 points5 points ago

Nailed it.

[–]Uncle_Gus -1 points0 points ago

Probably didn't like it at first, but these things tend to grow on you.

[–]Sallymander 2 points3 points ago

I had the same type of ingrown toe nail. I wasn't the peak of health but I wasn't overtly fat or anything. I would keep it bandaged up and sterilized until I had the money to see the doctor. He went in, trimmed it up, cleaned up the damage, and sent me on my way with a smile. A month later it was right back where it was. I went back, he did it again, and we both joked and he said I'm good to go. A month later it just keeps growing sideways, it wouldn't grow straight out any more. He just shook his head and said he could trim it again or remove it. I now have no big toe nail on my left foot now that he cauterized the nail from growing.

Sometimes it's not, "Let get that bad." Sometimes it's just how it gets.

[–]Sheprd12 -1 points0 points ago

World of Warcraft.

[–]Duskendymion 1 point2 points ago

Well, you and big toe had a good run...

[–]Smeagol3000 34 points35 points ago

Fuck removing the nail, cut that toe the hell off.

[–]Sparkvoltage 21 points22 points ago

As a victim of ingrown nails, I can tell you that the toe will heal fine after removal of the nail. Cutting it off would be the same as amputating an arm because of a broken bone in it.

[–]turncoat_ewok 7 points8 points ago

does the nail grow back after it's surgically removed? One of mine fell off after I banged it and it grew back eventually. My big toe currently has a bruise under it and isn't really attached to the nail bed, I can poke a nail file in there to scrape out the blood. I don't know what I keeping doing to my feet for this to happen.

[–]Sparkvoltage 5 points6 points ago

The nails will always grow back on their own. However, if you're as unfortunate as me, and have chronic in-grown nails (meaning they will always grow inwards even after removing the entire nail) then you can have the doctor apply a chemical to the nail bed and stop the growth of the nail.

[–]CmdrCarrot 3 points4 points ago

Actually, for very severe cases they will do a partial amputation of the toe. Basically they cut it off at the last joint, remove the nail, and refold toe skin to make it look semi-normal.

I had really bad problems with ingrown toenails as a kid because my toenail were naturally very curved. That was one of the solutions brought up. Though we ended up not needing to go that extreme, though I did go through an intense treatment that removing the sides of the nails and chemically burning the nail bed. You think that picture looks gross, you should of seen my big toes after going through that procedure.

[–]wotererio 0 points1 point ago

Ichad surgery on an ingrown toenail, though the wound was still there. Now, about 1 year after it the initial ingrowing, it's still not healed entirely, but the infection is more or less gone. Just a little wound rigth from the nail.

[–]brokenv 4 points5 points ago

I've had necrosis in the foot. That looks more painful.

[–]DerpusOfValues 3 points4 points ago

Mind if I ask why you had it? Accident?

[–]brokenv 7 points8 points ago

Stepped on my dog's half-chewed kangaroo bone in the middle of the night.

[–]DerpusOfValues 14 points15 points ago

Oh, that sounds mighty unpleasant. I, um... Trod on a slug barefoot one time. That was kinda gross.

[–]brokenv 6 points7 points ago

Trodding on a slug has the benefit of knowing you don't need to justify to yourself either salting it or sending your dog to 'play' with it.

Maybe I deserved necrosis...

[–]happybadger 3 points4 points ago

Think of the bright side. You can tell people, in all seriousness, that you lost your foot in battle with a kangaroo.

That's like a voucher to never pay for drinks again.

[–]brokenv 0 points1 point ago

Foots not gone, just my pride

I believe the word you are looking for is 'Stampifying'

From what I know, that's a very bad idea.

[–]fassaction 0 points1 point ago

i used to get ingrown toenails all the time when I was a kid...mostly because I would cut/pick my toenails and make them too short on the corners. You get that nice infected "flap" that grows over the nail and it feels like you have a thousand daggers stabbing you every time a swift breeze catches it.

The last one I had (in high school) fucked my toe up so badly that I was literally walking on the side of my foot for 3 months. I walked like that to the point where it fucked up my back and hips too.

now I dont fuck around, I let my toenails get kinda long and nasty, but it beats having to go through the pain of having an ingrown toenail.

[–]Tomazim 1 point2 points ago

Man, you made my toe hurt again just describing that.

[–]wotererio 0 points1 point ago

I had the exact same thing on my right big toe, 1 tear after, isn't fully healed yet. It was actually a combination of me cutting the side of the nail and by that making a small wound which turned into a infected ingrown toenail. Quit doing sports for a while after that too. Fucked me up.

[–]_pafy_ 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to throw up

[–]JustRuss79 0 points1 point ago

Wonderful side story, when it gets that infected and you DO go to the doctor; they can't numb the area because the puss is the exact PH opposite of the anesthetic and they cancel each other out.

So you deal with the pain, they might have to tie you down or knock you out if you can't.

[–]bluequail 0 points1 point ago

Actually it looks like an ingrown that has had surgery and a bit of infection going on.

My mom had the most ingrown I had ever seen, and one of her smaller toenails had grown shut in a circle, and the quick was like a tube of meat in the middle of it.

[–]LaMermaid -1 points0 points ago

[–]Cyphixthegreat 0 points1 point ago

As someone whose had bad ingrown toe nails too I can tell you that these toes would be a 3 doctor visits. First Antibiotics and episone salt soakings, Second would be to have the nail completely removed(It'll grow back) probably with a bit of acid treatment and the Third visit would be laser removal of dead/scarred tissue(horrible smell, burning flesh and painful when the litocain wears off). I only know this because i had to go through all this when i had them that bad.

Extraordinarily relevant post, just three links below this one: http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/13eajd/that_moment_when_youre_browsing_the_front_page/

[–]hdadeathly 0 points1 point ago

I used to get these all the time but they don't come back anymore because my doc poisoned the nail or whatever. Anyways, he once told me a kid had one but just kept ignoring it. His mom then finds one of the kids socks and there's blood. She goes and looks at his feet and the toenail grew through the bottom of the toe. Now THAT is bad.

[–]noluit 0 points1 point ago

Grab the chips, we've got the dip.

[–]Braude 0 points1 point ago

Shit, I have a minor ingrown toenail and I'm waiting for my health insurance to kick in before I go get it looked at.

It's not even CLOSE to this bad though, so I've got time. Mine's at this stage but it's 100x cleaner than the one pictured there.

That's what happens after you rip your toenail completely off in a freak pallet jack accident... It took 5 months to regrow, and it ends up regrowing INCORRECTLY. Back to square fucking one.

[–]wotererio 0 points1 point ago

Since it's not that bad, just try using dettol or another desinfecting thing, and put a bandage on it AND DON'T TOUCH IT. that's where I went wrong. I just made the wound worse and worse by trying to fix it.

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

The doctor can fix it properly. If you mess up you can end up with a staph infection.

[–]sirius89 0 points1 point ago

Jesus Christ that is disgusting. Are you even able to walk when your toe is fucked up like this? This must hurt really bad.

[–]wikkedwhite 0 points1 point ago

That toe nail needs to be removed.

[–]Zcypot 1 point2 points ago

wtf... you can just go to the doctor and they refer you to nearest place they can take that shit out.... I have had it done 4 times... what hurts the most is when they spray it to numb it. after that you dont feel shit at all.

[–]deanj4 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure why I clicked it, and was surprised to what I saw.

[–]klaymen01 0 points1 point ago

my toe looked like that earlier this year (not as bad but bad enough). My toe was only slightly ingrown and it usually sorts itself out after a few days but this time it swelled up and dug the nail in deeper. Slightest touch would hurt really bad and when i had it removed the relief was amazing. Removing the nail didnt hurt but the needle was the most painful ive ever had. A week later i was out running three times a week.

[–]TheLadyEve 0 points1 point ago

The title said it all, yet I still looked. And then I tasted my own vomit.

[–]fakelife2 0 points1 point ago

Seriously man..get to the ER.

[–]jbh007 0 points1 point ago

This person needs surgery. I've seen images of it on here before, and it's pretty gruesome, but apparently has an almost 100% success rate.

Place the person under anesthesia (not sure if general or just local), and basically just slice off the sides of the toes. For a while, the toe is just a nail with two giant chunks missing, but once scar tissue grows in, it looks really normal. And you never get another ingrown toenail.

[–]Korona123 1 point2 points ago

I just had a doctor remove one from my foot two days ago. It was the first one I ever had; I was completely amazed how huge the nail that was growing inside the toe was. I was thinking it will probably be about 3/8ths of an inch or like 1/4th of an inch perhaps.

The doctor pulled out about an 1/2th long nail I was in complete shock.

[–]Roflkopt3r 0 points1 point ago

Oh god how much I imagine scraping along the edges of that with a knife...

[–]fairwayks -1 points0 points ago

"Butt pucker" sensation.

[–]bLa07 0 points1 point ago

Oh my... that has to be so painful. I had a much smaller one after I'd slammed my left foot into a goal post playing soccer. It hurt like a b$%#h! I got it checked out and the doctor told me that they would have to wait for it to grow a little more to see if I needed surgery. Needless to say, I couldn't wait. About a week after that, I put a belt in my mouth and dug out the excess nail with a pocket knife. Totally worth it. Was originally painful, KILLED taking it out, but felt instantly better once it was removed. I wrapped it up, did routine maintenance, and it's still fine to this day.

[–]wotererio 0 points1 point ago

Tried doing that too when I had a fucked up toenail, but it just kept coming back... The wound was so bad then it just couldn't fix itself anymore.

[–]thisispannkaka 0 points1 point ago

That must hurt so fucking bad.

[–]tronn4 0 points1 point ago

[–]TwoHands 0 points1 point ago

Ingrown toenails are one of those problems that make themselves worse. They cause swelling and inflamation which causes more irritation and more inflamation. Once the skin breaks, it's infection time.

Why would anyone let this happen to them? even if you could not get to a doctor he could have done a simple online search to Fix this. Before Obamacare people of low income COULD and DID receive free healthcare. There is no excuse.

[–]LazyNarwhal 0 points1 point ago

Looks like spaghetti sauce.

[–]robgough -1 points0 points ago

I had one like this for years. I'm petrified of needles, and how much pain the surgery would be, that I'd figure I'd just make do.

As other people have described though, it's something you are constantly aware of all day. The slightest touch is agonising pain, constant oozing and bleeding (so many ruined socks) and it led to me significantly reducing what I did. Long walks hurt, so theme parks/shopping trips etc. all became something to avoid. Not to mention I'd not want anyone to see it.

One day I got drunk with a few mates, and eventually we admitted during conversation that we all had some level of in growing toenails. Well, as various people had theirs fixed it inspired me to grow some balls and get it seem too.

My GP was great, understanding of my nerves etc and helped put me at ease. He reckoned it would take 20 mins after injecting the toe area with local anaesthetic before he could start. 45 minutes, and 7 injections later, it was finally ready to be fixed.

I swear that from the moment of that second injection though, it has never hurt once. I didn't truly realise how much constant pain it gave me, as I just got used to it. Thanks to that, if there was any healing pain it completely escaped me.

There's almost certainly someone reading this with a toe just like this, and definitely a few of you with it not this bad. The surgery doesn't hurt, you'll feel so much better after - and when the swelling goes down (almost immediately) you toe will start to look much more normal again. Good luck!

[–]xbl00dl0verx 0 points1 point ago

Got my two big toenails removed because of this shit. Never got this bad though because I removed quite a bit myself. Fucking surgery hurts like a bitch but its so worth it. I live in Canada so I dont have to deal with the whole insurance crap... but yeah if you have ingrown toenails you should get them removed the moment you get the money it's a huge relief.

[–]slurpme 0 points1 point ago

Mine got like that, on both feet, finally had them done properly... rather than going to the hospital where the Dr gave me an ineffective anaesthetic then shoved a pair of scissors under my nail and the nail out...

[–]level1biscuit 0 points1 point ago

I want to lance it soooo bad..

[–]greyjacket586 0 points1 point ago

i had to get surgery on my toe for an ingrown toenail... and it wasn't even close to half this bad. i feel horrible for whoever has this. when you get an ingrown toenail, you don't know until its too late. then you try to fix it, and it works sometimes. unless you miss a part. then that little part grows deeper. when you think it is ingrown again on a different occasion, you try to fix it the same way and you irritate it even more which causes something that looks like a miniature version of this. when i had the procedure done on my toe, the doctor pulled out an inch of toenail from inside my toe. it was a very strange yet interesting thing to watch (my foot had been injected with a numbing agent five times) because he just cut througheasily, and then it got gross because pus started gushing out. not bloody pus, just PUS! i felt like vomiting. i still get ingrown toenails from time to time .i can not even begin to imagine what this much ingrown toenail is like though.

[–]ANomofpie 0 points1 point ago

[–]vanteal 0 points1 point ago

I use to have infection ingrown big toenail's growing up every summer. Not quite as bad as that..But close..I did go to the doctor, Who obviously suggested having the nails removed. I was a teenager at the time. And the methods seemed barbaric to me. And quite frighting. After a couple years I became so good at digging up the portion of the nail and removing it myself. Giving me about 6-8 months of infection free relief. But as a chronic nail biter/ripper the hangnails and infections would return. It wasn't until a few months ago I finally had one of the nails removed. Wished I would of done it years ago! And yet. I almost miss the pain and enjoyment of digging the nail out while it was infected. The instant relief after digging and enduring the pain. A twisted sense of accomplishment when that little bastard of a sliver peeked it's sharp little head out, And I was able to snatch it with a tweezers and rip it off!...
