Ray Romano's stand-up was funny, but his family on the show is filled with bile and contempt for one another. Sure, Archie bickered with Edith, too, but there's something about "Everybody Loves Raymond" that comes across as bleak and misanthropic to me. Peter Boyle was always fabulous, though.

It seems to me, like any other show, it is all about target audience. Everybody Loves Raymond is about the interplay of relationships in slightly disfunctional married life . It is about, and therefore relates to, people in their 40's whose main focus in life is their own nuclear family.

I don't care for it myself, but that's understandable. The struggles and triumphs encountered on the show aren't anything like my own.

I enjoyed this show very much, maybe because I am married and the topics/issues in this show are very relatable.

From what I understood they even picked real life events from the cast and used them in the show.

I especially liked Robert. His on/off relationships are funny as hell to me.

I hated Everybody Loves Raymond, and Ray Romano's standup... and pretty much everything I ever saw where he tried to be funny... Then I saw Grilled, which is funny at times but he plays a rather serious character, and I loved him in it.
