Airport closed reason: under attack by Zeus.

[–]Depops_au 144 points145 points ago

Zeus is punishing Brisbane Airport for charging $5 for transport between international and domestic terminals.

[–]123choji 29 points30 points ago

Hey, here we charge $10.

[–]rat_pnac 57 points58 points ago

Actually, the charge is 1 million volts.

[–]random_fucktuation 56 points57 points ago

Actually, charge is measured in Coulombs.

[–]randomsnark 33 points34 points ago

I was going to say you were being a bit picky over that million volts, but it's potentially a big difference.

[–]Jenji 1 point2 points ago

I see Watt you did there!

[–]TheSheepdog 12 points13 points ago

Lol, Watt?

What is this, an image for ants?

[–]AstroRadio 5 points6 points ago

Why can't we ban this guy? or every name with the word "butthole" in it?

[–]chaosmosis 12 points13 points ago

Then he just replaces his name with "asshole", or whatever. Also, that would kill lots of current users, I expect.

[–]kaizn 17 points18 points ago

WARNING: pic below is of a butthole.

YOU CAN'T RUN FROM HEAVEN

[–]UnnecessaryPhilology 56 points57 points ago

Zeus comes from Proto-Indo-European religion, *Dewos, a father-god of the sky. Dewos simply meant "god," but more literally it meant "shining." Dewos, as it turns out, comes from the root *dyeu- "to shine." It's not entirely certain, but it's believed that the original sense of Dewos was a god who "alights" from the sky. Compare that bad-boy's role with the sun and you get a really vague, but extremely fascinating mystery. Was there an ancient allegory or metaphor? A father-god of the sky who lights up definitely sounds like the sun -- yet Proto-Indo-European religion viewed the sun as a bit of a bitch, often needing rescuing. Not much of a god if you ask me.

EDIT: Actually, it sounds like a Rastafarian god now.

[–]DogPencil 12 points13 points ago

Very interesting!

Does this also relate to the Romance languages word for God? For example, "deus" in Portuguese?

[–]Pileus 19 points20 points ago

Yes. the Latin deus (as well as Jupiter), Greek zeus, and the Sanskrit deva are all derived from PIE *dyeu-. The Romance languages are derived from Latin.

[–]JefeRocha 11 points12 points ago

In school I was taught that the deity was initially called Deus-pater (Sky-father) and through changing pronunciation and other linguistic stuff it gradually started to become called Jupiter

Interesting how that stuff works

[–]UnnecessaryPhilology 2 points3 points ago

That is correct. By the way, a common title of Zeus' is Zeus Pater and a common title in Sanskrit was Dyaus Pita, the former meaning god-daddy and the latter meaning sky-daddy.

EDIT: I accidentally a word.

[–]123choji 3 points4 points ago

TIL...

[–]salmagundii 2 points3 points ago

There is nothing unnecessary about this Philology. The world needs more.

[–]giveuptheghost 6 points7 points ago

Thor just arrived.

[–]VAPossum 10 points11 points ago

I was thinking Thor had to make an emergency landing.

[–]Possibly_bad_grammar 12 points13 points ago

BUTTHOLE GUY BELOW!!!

[–]Skitz_au 45 points46 points ago

You seem a little excited.

[–]Possibly_bad_grammar 13 points14 points ago

Stupidly, I click every time I see one of his posts just to make sure that the one time I don't, I might miss something amazing. So far all I've gotten is a slightly hairy asshole.

[–]Skitz_au 12 points13 points ago

I'm trying to think of what could possibly be so amazing that the chance of staring at his asshole would be worth the risk...

yeah, I click it too.

[–]yesiamthankyou2 10 points11 points ago

One of these days we'll find the Ark of the Covenant in that asshole, one of these days.

[–]aMazingBanannas 181 points182 points ago

Brisbane represent, that was a hell of a storm. It was crazy that it was over in like 45 minutes though

[–]Firetruckin 109 points110 points ago

Never thought i'd see our usually-tame city on the frontpage of reddit... i'm so proud..

[–]shark_eat_your_face 61 points62 points ago

I'm from Townsville and this somehow made me feel so proud for Brisbane. You go girlfriend.

[–]Montros 53 points54 points ago

THE CITY, OF TOWNSVILLE...

[–]Neipsy 12 points13 points ago

True Story; The city was founded by Robert Townsend (Townsend street is right around the corner from me). He and an associate we're herding cattle here ages ago and wanted to build a tannery basically but didn't have any land. The government had made a pitch that if you started to grow either Sugar Cane or Coffee you could claim some land. The deadline for the pitch from the government had arrived and the sugar cane he'd purchased and ordered hadn't arrived on time. He began to complain of his woes to a local Asian grocer. She said she had some coffee beans which he very much wanted. She came back with them and he saw they we're roasted and he scoffed at her to which she responded, "Did they say it had to be fresh coffee beans?". Sure enough, city was founded on growing some Roasted Coffee Beans.

[–]leakycauldron 6 points7 points ago

Usually tame? Have you BEEN to the CBD on Gay Rights parade days? It's worse than the Indy days on the Gold Coast.

[–]frisked 3 points4 points ago

Except for all those drug dealers, addicts and bikies on the Gold Coast.

[–]Aydork 47 points48 points ago

Yeah, I woke up to darkness, rain and thunder and was like "The fuck is happening?" By the time I actually got out of bed and went to have a look, it was pretty much over.

Apparently the Kelvin Grove markets got fucked up and a roof collapsed in a hotel or something? I guess most of it missed the Carina-Carindale area..

[–]Clairebear16 14 points15 points ago

In new farm it was like the apocalypse. The thunder was so loud I thought my eardrums were going to burst. Also, I used to like in carindale :)

[–]bridgeridoos 10 points11 points ago

I was setting up for harvest music festival at the Botanical Gardens and was up on the hill at riverstage when it hit. Lightning was pounding the place and the wind blew the entire metal structure of the drinks stands over, which is where I was sheltering. Very lucky to get out unscathed.

[–]I_am_not_claptrap 13 points14 points ago

Apparently there's more to come tonight and tomorrow, too. Those thunder BOOMS! almost made me shart myself, so much so that I literally yelled FUCK YOU! at it in annoyance.

[–]ryanisreading 11 points12 points ago

Hell yeah, that storm was the balls! I think lightning hit just outside my window. I was playing Res Evil 6 just being cool about the whole thing. Then it hit and I shit you not my fire alarm went off and fan started going without the switch on! Then the windows proceeded to fly open letting torrents of rain in. Good times.

Tl;Dr - lightning turned my fan on and set off my fire alarm.

[–]diamond 26 points27 points ago

Is there anything in Australia that isn't trying to kill everyone?

[–]leakycauldron 29 points30 points ago

Yes. We have a safe zone on the Gold Coast where the plants only exude mass paralysis spores.

[–]Krispykiwi 38 points39 points ago

Its called Movie World.

[–]shark_eat_your_face 3 points4 points ago

The Gold Coast is not a safe zone. Everyone want to stab or kill you. That place is violent. But the animals aren't that bad. Pffft only mass paralysis spores.

[–]muzzratticus 10 points11 points ago

Woolloongabba was insane, sirens everywhere (I'm close to the PA). There were 2 crashes along Logan Rd within 500m of each other. My Sister was on the highway at Ikea, she saw lightning strike the road in front of her. Housemate saw lightning strike the street in front of us too. Also have a friend in Paddington who had their screen door ripped off! I love living in Brisbane.

[–]Tbird555 142 points143 points ago

Mere milliseconds before the plane was sent into the future... Amazing.

[–]account512 113 points114 points ago

Everything is currently getting sent into the future, just very slowly.

[–]PersonalPrefs 100 points101 points ago

At a pretty standard rate of 1 second per second.

[–]account512 74 points75 points ago

Note: Actual rate may vary based on relative speed

[–]igetthatreference 18 points19 points ago

or if you're superman and you fly backwards, like, really fast

[–]Zaboodable 6 points7 points ago

Isn't flying backwards just flying forward backwards?

[–]KallistiEngel 2 points3 points ago

I have no idea what you're talking about.

[–]Zaboodable 4 points5 points ago

1 + 1 = 2
1 - 1 = 0
Therefore 0 is 2 backwards which means that 2 is the speed of light.

Getting hit by lightning while in an aircraft in flight isn't really going to do any damage though.

[–]DrTrouser 11 points12 points ago

I have spent 10 years of my life protecting very large commercial aircraft from lightning strikes. It happens approx once a year to an aircraft, and the fact that people assume it doesn't do any damage is testament to the effort we put in.

Although making aircraft out of stupid bloody carbon fibre has made life very difficult.

[–]shark_eat_your_face 9 points10 points ago

Why?

[–]Forthwrong 24 points25 points ago

Because aircraft are designed to be unaffected by lightning. It's a large piece of metal high in the sky; of course it's going to get struck by lightning, and not that rarely either. Instead of trying to make the lightning rod stop attracting lightning, they just make it unaffected by it.

[–]Axeman20 10 points11 points ago

Isn't that called a Faraday cage?

[–]cultmember 4 points5 points ago

That was pretty funny how the travel agency tried to scare him out of travelling.

[–]Pakayaro 101 points102 points ago

Fair enough.

[–]JoshTay 50 points51 points ago

Fair? I find it shocking.

[–]mnahmnah 25 points26 points ago

[–]CollegeTownPUA 31 points32 points ago

I find it rather enlightning.

[–]mark331 7 points8 points ago

[–]Zned 74 points75 points ago

OH GOD OUR ONLY PLANE!! No more plane travel for us New Zealanders :(

[–]empireminer 17 points18 points ago

Maybe Key will give us a turn in the helicopter.

[–]bobwithanx 113 points114 points ago

Looks like an Australian electrical spider. Add it to the list.

[–]GiantSquidd 19 points20 points ago

Seriously, what will it take for you people to realize that that entire continent wants to kill you all?

[–]argv_minus_one 17 points18 points ago

Australians are clearly so badass they willingly tell the continent to piss off and succeed.

[–]oldzealand 161 points162 points ago

Air New Zealand? I thought kiwis were flightless...

[–]M2DaZi 94 points95 points ago

you seriously making THAT joke?

[–]oldzealand 123 points124 points ago

I'm pretty old.

[–]sleepthoughts 78 points79 points ago

The person who originally posted this picture to /r/brisbane should have crossposted it to pics and reaped the karma reward. Apparently his Mum took the picture! She did a great job with it. I always try to get lightning shots but fuck them up.

[–]mongaloid 56 points57 points ago

Thanks buddy. I was going to post it later when I got back from dropping off my Mum and Dad but some people are thieves with no respect.

[–]miles5459 6 points7 points ago

Honestly people you're fighting over internet points. I know it feels good to be appreciated on the internet but seriously don't get annoyed when someone else "reaps" your karma, it's the internet, no one give a fuck.

[–]mongaloid 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, that's why I've done nothing further - I don't really care about the Internet points it is the ethics that bothers me. Even then it only bothers me enough to reply to this.

[–]Isopu 28 points29 points ago

Something from Brisbane at the top of the front page, I feel something akin to what you humans call "Pride"

[–]milz91 27 points28 points ago

what a beautiful 747

[–]MrNiceWatchBro 21 points22 points ago

Agreed, 747-400 if I'm not mistaken. It's a beautiful looking machine.

[–]milz91 10 points11 points ago

There's not a more beautiful plane in the sky, something about those 747's are majestic.

[–]SK737 9 points10 points ago

As a captain of an A330, I have to say the A330

[–]mypantsareonmyhead 12 points13 points ago

That's like saying a Camry is more beautiful than a Miura.

The aesthetic beauty of the 747 is timeless. A330 is boring as batshit.

[–]racoonpeople 2 points3 points ago

I like the curves of the 787 myself.

[–]Mattieohya 2 points3 points ago

757-300 is the best looking narrow body for wide body I would have to say the 777 with raked wingtips.

[–]andrewinmelbourne[S] -3 points-2 points ago

A380

[–]milz91 25 points26 points ago

I guess it's all a matter of opinion, but A380's look like stubby, ugly chodes. But sure, they are quite impressive airplanes, as well.

[–]dudeAwEsome101 11 points12 points ago

Any airplane that can carry hundreds of people and fly is impressive in my book.

[–]MrNiceWatchBro 11 points12 points ago

I think I'm more partial to the 747 because growing up in Seattle and with Boeing having a large presence here. The A380 is a great machine as well. It's truly amazing how anything that large can fly through the air like they do.

[–]thetobester 4 points5 points ago

Yeah - I saw one of these at the airport earlier this year and I was a bit disappointed. The 747 has beautiful curves of old by comparison. And this Air NZ livery frames it in a fresh modern way.

[–]milz91 2 points3 points ago

I love the Air NZ livery on the 747, see it land at LAX pretty often. I think Air China has the most beautiful livery though

[–]kmatika 7 points8 points ago

The A380 is definitely not more beautiful.

[–]andrewinmelbourne[S] -1 points0 points ago

Maybe not aesthetically yet engineering wise I think it is a work of art.

[–]mknutso 6 points7 points ago

This is just plane shocking...

[–]HeyCarpy 10 points11 points ago

I work on the tarmac.

When there is a certain amount of electricity in the air there are sensors that alert everyone to vacate the area and head inside until instructed otherwise. All ground operations come to a halt - for the very reason illustrated by the picture here.

What kills me is the passengers in the terminal who roll their eyes and moan about unionized workers and their coffee breaks, furious because their baggage still hasn't appeared on the arrivals carousels. Every. Single. Time.

[–]Mattieohya 17 points18 points ago

This is one reason why flights get delayed during thunderstorms. I am a baggage handler and whenever there is lightning within a specific distance of the airport we have to go inside and not load planes. The gate agents upstairs will get chewed out by people because they see us walking inside and not loading/offloading their plane. But this is why we go inside you don't golf in a thunderstorm so why would you stand next to a giant piece of mental.

Please be nice to gate agents they hate the airline more than you do.

[–]DickMoveAdam 7 points8 points ago

In Australia, even the weather is out to kill you.

[–]traal 8 points9 points ago

Can't they just steer around the lightning bolt?

[–]JosiahJohnson 6 points7 points ago

Makes me wonder about current return provisions (grounding) while on ground. Anyone familiar with that end of flight?

[–]wallaceca 11 points12 points ago

Yes. Either A: The cart which powers it while on the ground takes care of that or B: same as in the air, internal ground network. Its pretty beefy.

Source: I'm a wire installation engineer for the 787.

[–]CaravanPony 12 points13 points ago

SPACE BRISBANE...

[–]Skopos 7 points8 points ago

Go Space Broncos!

[–]brubakerp 6 points7 points ago

False, that is lightning and not thunder, thunder cannot be captured by a camera.

[–]PresidentEngineer 0 points1 point ago

You are technically correct.

[–]RuchW 11 points12 points ago

The lightning itself shouldn't be an issue. Planes get hit all the time and it's not a big issue. I was waiting to board an Emirates A380 in Toronto and then it got hit by lightning. They delayed it while they ran a quick system diagnostic (you're on the ground, why not?) and everything was good to go after about 30 minutes.

The precipitation must have been horrendous though.

[–]mypantsareonmyhead 4 points5 points ago

I've been in a jet airliner struck by lightning and I can assure you, it was a fucking big issue.

The sound of the explosion and the blinding flash were like we'd been hit by a missile.

We did not make it to our destination.

[–]wynden 3 points4 points ago

That sounds like a story. AMA?

[–]igolightly 9 points10 points ago

You should post this in /r/perfecttiming.

[–]PorgledTwert 5 points6 points ago

Zeus doesn't want people going to New Zealand.

[–]pringle_8642 4 points5 points ago

What did we ever do you Australia? Picking on our Air New Zealand.

[–]katierpillar 4 points5 points ago

Poor Brisbane just can't catch a break! Floods, cyclones, massive storms.

[–]dreamingtree 5 points6 points ago

This is just the start of storm season for us, big summer ahead!

[–]deftlydexterous 5 points6 points ago

Planes are getting hit by lightning and we still can't use our cell phones onboard...

Nikola Tesla came back from the dead and took vengeance on this airport?

[–]Frenetic77 3 points4 points ago

Im in brisbane, I live next to a park and a single tree was struck twice within 10 mintues. That was the craziest storm I have ever seen, shit was getting hit by lightning before I saw rain

[–]Docthedestroyer 3 points4 points ago

Yea Air New Zealand! They'll get to where you need to go, or die trying.

[–]onlyonecookie 5 points6 points ago

well are you in brisbane or melbourne? make up your mind...

[–]andrewinmelbourne[S] 5 points6 points ago

Believe it or not, Sydney right now.

[–]onlyonecookie 15 points16 points ago

well...that just makes you a big fat liar, now doesn't it?

[–]Ohellmotel 5 points6 points ago

Australia REPRESENT

[–]70000 3 points4 points ago

Oh wow my grandparents are flying here from new Zealand in a few hours. Don't want to put up with the drama if they can't get on the plane.

[–]ubad 5 points6 points ago

This may not have occurred to you, but I suspect you will thank me for pointing it out. If they can't get on the plane and fly to where you are from New Zealand, then you won't have to put up with the drama, since they will not be able to arrive where you are.

[–]MrNiceWatchBro 1 point2 points ago

I always heard that during a lightning storm one of the safest places to be is inside an airplane.

[–]_zoso_ 0 points1 point ago

IF you are up above the storm. I don't think coming in to land would be quite the same thing.

[–]shadowfish 1 point2 points ago

Fantastic photo. Did you take it?

[–]mongaloid 7 points8 points ago

My mum did. R/Brisbane for the original.

[–]imkaneforever 1 point2 points ago

Can someone explain to me where the electricity goes after we see the point where the lightening is striking? I mean, all that energy is discharged from the sky to earth, but I don't recall ever seeing the location where it touches the ground after the object ever.

[–]therealprotonk 3 points4 points ago

this is about as good an explanation as you're going to get in short order. If you need more follow the links in the post.

[–]venerablegaucho 1 point2 points ago

Probably for the best.

[–]DMercenary 1 point2 points ago

"I didnt want to fly anyways."

[–]victoryoria -1 points0 points ago

how the heck did you take this picture??

[–]Whiterthanjew 1 point2 points ago

I work at a manufacturing plant for airplane parts. There's a whole center that is researching how to diffuse lightning strikes.

Help is on the way....
