Why is his name tag upside down?

[–]jceez 175 points176 points ago

I used to work for that company (ZERO-G). After each flight we did this champagne toast and then everyone would flip their name tags right side up and got this certificate that you "went weightless". If you've done it before you start off with the name tag right side up.

[–]KookyGuy 15 points16 points ago

Out of curiosity how much does it cost?

[–]darya521 26 points27 points ago

Used to be $5000 a ticket if a remember correctly. My mother's company sold Zero G the plane they use. Apparently they do a free fall in order for the zero gravity effect to work O.o

[–]KookyGuy 25 points26 points ago

I decided not to be lazy and I went to their website. You're right. It's $4,950 + 5% tax for yourself and others.

[–]splein23 8 points9 points ago

I'm wondering how many people you can bring along.

[–]KookyGuy 2 points3 points ago

I wondered that too. I'm sure there's a limit.

[–]ExcessiveIrritation 0 points1 point ago

This would be one meetup I would go to.

[–]splein23 -1 points0 points ago

I'm thinking one day of doing this with my family and friends if it allows enough people.

[–]JumpV 14 points15 points ago

So he can read it while he looks down.

[–]CountGrasshopper 1 point2 points ago

In case he forgets?

[–]HittingSmoke 0 points1 point ago

When Stephen Hawking forgets something he just does math until it pops back up as the answer to an equation.

[–]KarstonVT 14 points15 points ago

Because the enemy's gate is down

[–]The_Steampunk 2 points3 points ago

I love you.

[–]Soulshell 0 points1 point ago

I seen that IMBd created a page for a movie for 2013. Hollywood better not fuck this up.

[–]Brewster-Rooster 49 points50 points ago

There is no upside down in space :O

[–]FAILpt 59 points60 points ago

Actually i think they are not in space, they are in a plane that is diving very fast so it can kind of "counter" de gravity efect, so they´ll be in 0G´s for some seconds/minutes.

[–]totalBS 30 points31 points ago

Here's the flight pattern. Just a plane climbing and descending multiple times, but it does it at a rate that counters gravity. Pretty awesome idea

[–]jhc1415 4 points5 points ago

So how long are you actually weightless? I have heard that it's only about 30 seconds of weightlessness, followed by 30 seconds of multiple G's while you are in the bottom of the arc, but I am not sure how accurate that is.

[–]gummychubby 9 points10 points ago

I've been on the vomit comet, NASA's version of the same thing. It is about 30 sec of 'weightlessness' (microgravity) and then about 30 seconds of approx 2g's. There's not a lot of transition between, a few seconds maybe. We did about 30 parabolas this way.

[–]totalBS 5 points6 points ago

I've heard that you're weightless a number of times (not sure how many), each lasting up to 30 seconds. Judging from the photo (assuming it's accurate) a 20 degree decent won't be too rough, certainly nothing that would make people uncomfortable. Here's a CBS report on it. Here's a bunch of ping pong balls floating

[–]traken -1 points0 points ago

A 20 degree descent isn't rough?

You are literally falling out of the sky. According to that graph above, that's a 15,000 feet-per-minute descent. Pilots shit their pants at anything near a 3,000 feet-per-minute descent. The plane would hit the sea-level in ~100 seconds.

Mr. Fighter Pilot here thinks a 20 degree descent isn't a rough ride. Pffft.

[–]randomtroubledmind 4 points5 points ago

It's not countering gravity. The plane pitches up and then begins to pitch down and travel in a parabola. Everything inside the plane not strapped down is essentially in freefall or, more specifically, traveling in a ballistic trajectory. The plane is also traveling this same ballistic trajectory and is just sort of around you as you fall. Eventually, the plane must pitch up again, thus the floor gets in the way of your free fall and you suddenly must brace for the 2 to 3 g pull out of the dive.

[–]zhiggins72 12 points13 points ago

Seems a bit wordy for a joke, no?

[–]GrinningPariah 6 points7 points ago

Fine, there's no upside down in 0G. Pedant.

[–]malenkylizards 7 points8 points ago

Sorry, but it's not 0G either. The acceleration downward due to gravity is still 9.8 meters per second per second. And when you're in orbit, the acceleration downward due to gravity is only a LITTLE bit less than 9.8 m s-2. The reason you feel weightless in orbit is the same reason you feel weightless at the top of a roller coaster, or in a parabolic plane like this. That reason is basically that you're FALLING. All of the forces that are normally there to "counteract" the gravitational pull towards the center of the earth (usually, this is the floor pushing upwards with an equal force, or in the case of an airplane, the plane gaining/maintaining lift) are gone, and all you feel is the downward tug of gravity. That's all you feel when you're falling. This is why the most correct term for this is "freefall."

NOTE: You're in freefall when you jump, too. The only difference is, the environment you're in is NOT falling, but in a parabolic plane, or in an orbiting vehicle, the environment is falling at the same rate.

[–]PineStraw 5 points6 points ago

my old physics professor always referred to it as "falling around the earth"

[–]Ellipsis 5 points6 points ago

Falling and missing the ground.

[–]malenkylizards 0 points1 point ago

Nice! I hadn't heard that, it's cute. I suppose you could call it "falling sideways", too.

[–]robbomoon 2 points3 points ago

9.81 meters per second per second? I believe you mean 32 FEET per second per second! Go home frenchy! This is 'Merica! I didn't lose my legs in WWII so you can prance around with your metric nonsense!

[–]malenkylizards 13 points14 points ago

Sorry. Actually I meant 71 gigafurlongs per fortnight per fortnight.

[–]Maestro_Average 2 points3 points ago

http://i41.tinypic.com/2yydqx2.jpg relevant as an argument to what you just said by itself

[–]gummychubby 0 points1 point ago

I have used 32 ft/s2 approximately once in my entire undergrad (in the US). I still don't understand why we're on Imperial Units, we're not a colony anymore and they don't even use them in the UK! Metric is so much easier...

[–]IAmBroom 1 point2 points ago

INCORRECT. As Mr. Einstein pointed out, inside of a windowless elevator it's impossible to tell whether you are in zero-G, or simply freefalling.

You don't "feel" the downward tug of gravity while falling. You don't feel any force (aside from air). If you've ever been in freefall you'd know that.

[–]drockers 0 points1 point ago

There is if you build all your technical interfaces with one directionality.

[–]GrinningPariah 0 points1 point ago

So if I tape my entire computer to the underside of my desk, it's not upside down, the ceiling just becomes the new floor?

[–]Ergot25 2 points3 points ago

Something like the Vomit Comet

[–]akallio9000 0 points1 point ago

Any parabolic trajectory would do.

[–]gerryn 1 point2 points ago

That's for sure, unfortunately Stephen could never - or not with current space-faring technologies endure the g-forces required to break into space or even be allowed to try.

[–]jrat1120 0 points1 point ago

The "vomit comet".

[–]engals -1 points0 points ago

You just blew my mind.

[–]imkaneforever -1 points0 points ago

It's all relative.

[–]Gebus -1 points0 points ago

or is there? :O

[–]tevert 5 points6 points ago

I think the better question would be "who in that whole building doesn't recognize him?"

[–]OneHandsomeSheep 0 points1 point ago

Because you touch yourself, Dillon.

[–]Naborino 0 points1 point ago

In case he gets so excited that he forgets who he is.

[–]StayFunky 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure it was a very "cerebral" experience.

[–]PISS_OUT_MY_DICK 0 points1 point ago

Because fuck you, that's why.

[–]teraflux 55 points56 points ago

TIL it's $5,197.50 to book a zero gravity flight and you get to experience it in 20-30 seconds intervals about 12-15 times.

[–]Exaskryz 30 points31 points ago

Sounds totally worth it. I will do this in 10 years.

[–]OoogaOoogaYoink 23 points24 points ago

... and in ten years it just might be ten times less expensive. This is only wishful thinking, of course.

[–]Exaskryz 7 points8 points ago

You may be right, which is just an extra incentive to wait.

[–]aldude3 1 point2 points ago

But I want to do it Nooowwwww!!!

[–]Tyrelxpeioust 0 points1 point ago

Duly noted.

[–]czw 0 points1 point ago

Exaskryz could also be dead in ten years, though...

[–]steezdoug 1 point2 points ago

It's been over an hour, maybe he already died?

[–]bacheror_flog 0 points1 point ago

Just like TI-81 calculators.

[–]LukaCola 9 points10 points ago

This actually means the means to experience weightlessness is affordable to most civilians. Maybe not economically feasible, but affordable.

[–]gemcitytiffany 27 points28 points ago

Here's a really good video with the guy who operated this whole ordeal. That's basically how he felt! They set up an entire ER in the plane. Pretty short video and totally worth a watch.

[–]Isuress 1 point2 points ago

That was brilliant. Thank you for that.

[–]gemcitytiffany 3 points4 points ago

I teared up the first time I watched it!

[–]fievelm 0 points1 point ago

Anything with Peter Diamandis is going to be good. I got to see him at a conference in Vegas a while back and walked away more inspired than I had ever felt. He does some amazing stuff.

[–]Vmaster 25 points26 points ago

[–]ltdan-icecream 19 points20 points ago

It makes me fucking sad. I hate seeing Stephen Hawking.... such a brilliant mind trapped in a broken body. I fucking hate it...

I feel bad for him, but then I feel bad for that because I know that's fucked up.

Shit man.

[–]Viking_Lordbeast 20 points21 points ago

Just be thankful that he's alive in this time where technology is where it needs to be for his mind to be able to communicate.

[–]ryan62187 8 points9 points ago

In all seriousness, can he actually feel the feeling of weightlessness? Either way, pretty awesome.

[–]lacewingfly 17 points18 points ago

Hawkings has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or motor neuron disease). It causes progressive destruction of the upper and lower motor neurons. Essentially the brain can't communicate with the muscles anymore. So he still has feeling in the sense that all his receptors still work - he just can't tell his body to do anything.

[–]ophello 3 points4 points ago

He will feel pressure and pain just like you do. He just can't control his muscles.

[–]gummychubby 1 point2 points ago

To be honest, for me there wasn't a lot of "feeling" of weightlessness. It was just kind of you were touching the ground and then you weren't. But that's just me, I agree it's awesome :)

[–]wisdom_of_pancakes 7 points8 points ago

On my phone, but I know there is a shooped version of this pic with two miniature Paula Deans riding him. I'll post when I get home if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

Here's a really great TED Talk video with the owner of the "Vomit Comet," as it's called. The first time I saw this, when they start showing how insanely happy Stephen was up there I actually cried tears of joy for him.

Totally worth a watch.

[–]ophello 9 points10 points ago

I made some audio to accompany this photo:

I'm Steven Hawking...

[–]klanus 11 points12 points ago

I wonder, if he was not paralyzed would he be using all his time for science?

[–]markidle 39 points40 points ago

Pretty sure he did before he was paralyzed.

[–]velouria123 13 points14 points ago

Actually, he was not a distinguished student during his undergraduate years and an oral examination was required to determine if he was suitable for a phd program at Trinity. I am uncertain if there is a real correlation, but he only began doing noticeable work after developing symptoms of ALS, and then getting married.

[–]thyhorrorcosmic 10 points11 points ago

he was still sciencing pre-ALS

[–]velouria123 15 points16 points ago

Hell yeah he was sciencing.

[–]erikx213 0 points1 point ago

TIL I need to spend more time sciencing. Fucks yea sciencing!

[–]Relayer2112 2 points3 points ago

Yes, he needed to have an oral examination. However, apparently "the examiners then were intelligent enough to realize they were talking to someone far more clever than most of themselves".

[–]eacxxxz 1 point2 points ago

Raw intelligence is somewhat irrelevant in most cases.

I'd wager that being paralyzed meant that all he could do was study and focus on his field, which meant that he spent more time and effort than just about anyone else contributing to his apparent intellectual superiority.

[–]pl213 1 point2 points ago

Not many people do noteworthy work during their undergrad career, even noted scientists. He was diagnosed with ALS just as he was finishing undergrad, and I imagine that he didn't see much purpose in a doctorate seeing that most people that get ALS an average of 10 years after diagnosis. I imagine there was also a lot of adapting required by the symptoms of his disease, which couldn't have made graduate study any easier.

[–]klanus 2 points3 points ago

Wait he was not paralyzed . I am dumb. I am off to google now.

[–]suace 14 points15 points ago

I just finished reading his wiki, this part blew my mind.

Given the deterioration of Hawking's facial nerves continues and there is a risk of him acquiring locked-in syndrome, Hawking is collaborating with neuroscientists on a brain–computer interface that could translate Hawking's thoughts into words.[47][48]

[–]klanus 6 points7 points ago

Well he is a big Science obsessed person. I don't think I had to read a wiki to know he was trying to do that. I would if I was paralyzed like him.

[–]suace 6 points7 points ago

For me, the surprise came in two parts: I didn't realize he could very well lose even the tiny bit of movement he still has left one day, and secondly....mind reading tool! That's...absolutely amazing. It would be a huge technological break through, and it would change...everything, and not all in a positive way.

[–]greywizard77 0 points1 point ago

I have always wanted to do this and saw the website in the back of the picture. It is over $5,000! A little piece of me died.

[–]Tarblz 4 points5 points ago

What's more important, food or flight?

[–]abstract_misuse 3 points4 points ago

Getting cheaper every year, though. In a decade you'll be able to afford it.

[–]gummychubby 0 points1 point ago

If you do an Undergraduate Research Project with NASA you just have to pay for a ticket to Houston!

[–]Teh_Smell 1 point2 points ago

[–]Iamstu 0 points1 point ago

That's all sorts of awesome.

[–]1gabbo 0 points1 point ago

Javier Bardem?

[–]VGiselleH 1 point2 points ago

What a happy image, I just started grinning with joy the moment I recognized him, so great! I do hope the upwards part of the flight doesn't hurt him though, but looking at his face I suspect he'll think it's worth it if that's the case.

[–]hippiehendrix 1 point2 points ago

I think that might be the look of fear. For moments before this photo was taken they had spun him in like a million circles. You try sitting stationary for most of your life then bein tossed around in zero geez, I think it might be a bit unnerving.
