I can't help but want to share my umbrella with him.

[–]tcrooks 65 points66 points ago

Yeah, what would happen if you tried to share your umbrella? Are you supposed to stay away from them since they're wild animals, or are they pretty harmless?

[–]weaverster 177 points178 points ago

Well.... They are pretty fucking strong

[–]TwoLives 146 points147 points ago

Yep, I can confirm. I've seen Planet of the Apes.

[–]siksean 63 points64 points ago

I can confirm that he watched Planet of the Apes.

[–]hated_monster 29 points30 points ago

Like that one who ripped that lady's face off :D

[–]Weezy_Ef_Baby 71 points72 points ago

Wasn't that a chimp?

[–]hated_monster 30 points31 points ago

I'm not entirely sure to be honest... To Google! Edit* you're right, it was a chimp. My bad. :P

[–]black27696 62 points63 points ago

Chimps are like super humans on pot, but sometimes speed. So they're kinda relaxed and hang out, until they go nuts and rip your face off.

[–]Let_It_Ride 28 points29 points ago

I'd say that Bonobos are like humans on pot. Literally (almost literally) all they do is hang out, eat, and fuck. Because they all just want to get along. Normal chimps are fucking crazy though.

[–]Maschalismos 2 points3 points ago

One of my former colleagues worked with the apes in the san diego zoo system. He says his least favorite groups of apes are bonobos. "Those guys" he'd say, with a suddenly somber face "are perverts". Apparently the females would, er, molest him whenever he entered their habitat.

[–]kensomniac 14 points15 points ago

This is probably my favorite analogy ever, now.

"I'm on pot, but sometimes speed. You can't tell, but I can pull your arms from their sockets if I wanted.. you want some of this muffin?"

[–]smotherhertoheaven 8 points9 points ago

I'm really hoping you meant D: and got it backwards.

[–]hated_monster 11 points12 points ago

Nope >:)

[–]tasty_bananas 75 points76 points ago

Most of them aren't violent. Unless they are sexually mature males: you may have noticed that older orangutan males have cheek pads (“flanges”) on both sides of their faces. That is one of a few signs that they are sexually mature, and these males will protect their territory aggressively, so they can be potentially dangerous.
Although females and young orangutans aren't particularly violent, they are nevertheless a wild animal, they may or may not be used to humans, and people that approach them may not know what scares them or enrages them. Beware with touching or playing with a young orangutan if his mother is around!

[–]empireminer 49 points50 points ago

Good advice about interacting with primates, tasty bananas.

[–]mikeyk730 35 points36 points ago

That would look a little something like this

[–]SisterRayVU 6 points7 points ago

you win

[–]mikeyk730 2 points3 points ago

i just happened to go to the same place a few months back :)

[–]Weereenseen 33 points34 points ago

This is probably at one of the orangutan rehabilitation centers (Sepilok - http://www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk/about-us/sepilok-rehabilitation-centre and Semenggoh http://www.sarawakforestry.com/htm/snp-nr-semenggoh.html are the ones I know about on the Malaysian side of Borneo).

They try to raise freed captive baby orang utans in such a way that they'll eventually be able to return to the wild.

The human visitors have to stay on the paths, the apes can do as they want. They are of course ridiculously strong, but not aggressive.

[–]IWentToTheWoods 4 points5 points ago

For anyone wanting to see more orangutans, I highly recommend the recent IMAX film Born to be Wild (narrated by Morgan Freeman, even!) about an orangutan rehabilitation center in Borneo and an elephant rehabilitation center in Kenya.

[–]lipsheutz 18 points19 points ago

Perhaps hand it an umbrella in a gorilla costume?

[–]chrissymac95 298 points299 points ago

That's so cute... but why doesn't he hide under a tree or something?

[–]TheLeviathong 865 points866 points ago

It's not the rain he hates. If you look closely you can tell he's actually having an existential crisis.

[–]flopus 423 points424 points ago

"Why did the ape life choose me?"

[–]Cubicle_Surrealist 121 points122 points ago

He's tired of monkeying around

[–]ddigby 46 points47 points ago

OOK!

[–]BottleLamp 18 points19 points ago

I got the Librarian reference, more people play WoW than read Discworld it seems.

[–]Wood_Stock 19 points20 points ago

[–]Beyound_The_Pale 13 points14 points ago

I hate getting ooked in the dooker!

I like how his body is shaped in a perfect hexagon and his head is in the direct center.

[–]melodylikemusic 20 points21 points ago

Divine geometry is everywhere.

[–]mcgaggen 13 points14 points ago

orangutans don't like the rain. If they know it is going to rain soon, they will sometimes try to find shelter, however, if they are stuck in the rain, they have this odd behavior. Even if they are soaking and cold, they will sit in the same place while raining. Gorillas also have this behavior.

[–]just-plain-mean 42 points43 points ago

Because there's no trees on the goddamn bridge. Next question.

[–]scientastic 11 points12 points ago

This is probably at Sepilok or a similar center where they repatriate orphaned orangutans to the wild. This young one probably is probably recently repatriated and still dependent on people.

[–]MamaDaddy 6 points7 points ago

or under the bridge! I guess he hasn't quite figured it out yet. I feel sorry for animals that can't get in out of the rain.

[–]ElScreecho 15 points16 points ago

Don't go under the bridge. That's where all the orangutan junkies go shoot up on their ape-smack and write songs about being alone in the rainforest of angels...

[–]cutemolly22 10 points11 points ago

It's a still from a video. He's actually rolling along.

[–]DustBreakOverlord 3 points4 points ago

It's a trap...that's why.

[–]GoddardMike 4 points5 points ago

Monkey Common Sense... My Hands > Tree

[–]vajenna 21 points22 points ago

Not a monkey

[–]MissVix 474 points475 points ago

Indeed, orangutans hate the rain! They make adorable leaf rain hats to protect themselves: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2002702/Orangutan-mother-invention-seeks-shelter-jungle-downpour.html

[–]Prosopagnosiape 208 points209 points ago

They also are unusual among the apes in that they often make their little tree nests with an upper nest above the one that they sleep in, as a roof to keep the rain off!

[–]Anon_is_a_Meme 242 points243 points ago

Their arm-hair is also adapted to the rain. In humans, arm hair direction is from shoulder to hand. In orangutans, arm hair direction is from shoulder to elbow, and hand to elbow. This mean that when the orangutan stands in the pose demonstrated in the OP, rain-water is channelled to the elbow.

[–]Alot_Hunter 290 points291 points ago

I feel like someone signed me up for ORANGUTAN_FACTS.

[–]Luthos 92 points93 points ago

I'm ok with this. Because orangutans are cool.

[–]Titties 10 points11 points ago

Orangutans and gorillas are the best apes.

[–]Nasdijj 9 points10 points ago

Chimps too. All the great apes are cool

[–]vipersporthp 13 points14 points ago

Fuck Chimps. They like to kill lower apes just for fun and then fuck afterwards. They have no need to eat meat. They only do it as a game. They are assholes. Bonobos are where it is at. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTPkmH4hWCs

[–]vefobitseq 3 points4 points ago

dont humans kill for fun too though?

[–]vidurnaktis 8 points9 points ago

Especially humans. ;D

[–]Forseriousnow 11 points12 points ago

Sorry, when I signed up I didn't realize the cell I entered on the website was a digit off, probably turns out to be your number.

[–]Prosopagnosiape 31 points32 points ago

Didn't know that bit, interesting, thanks for sharing! I wonder how effective a raincoat their hair actually is, since it seems rather sparse compared to anyone but us.

[–]paperlace 37 points38 points ago

So fashion.

[–]goodadvice00 39 points40 points ago

So fetch

[–]tuck5649 38 points39 points ago

Stop trying to make fetch happen, goodadvice00. It's not going to happen!

[–]schunniky 7 points8 points ago

c'mon man, just because he's streets ahead doesn't mean you have to be mean about his mannerisms.

[–]Argi_ 21 points22 points ago

Oh god in the last picture the baby looks soooo fucking sad

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

Seems like the rain forest is a pretty bad place for them to live.

[–]Great_Chairman_Mao 55 points56 points ago

She keeps looking at the sky like "Wtf, why is this leaking?"

[–]lipsheutz 22 points23 points ago

More like "fuck you mother nature"

[–]absolutrocks 18 points19 points ago

Camp Leakey.

[–]iJiggle 5 points6 points ago

Galdikas upvote.

[–]heruskael 11 points12 points ago

Let's give 'em a hammer and nails, i want to see what kind of house they build.

[–]IXIELCHINGONIXI 5 points6 points ago

i wonder if humans could show them how to weave a straw hat?

[–]juniSMASH 20 points21 points ago

that pic reminds me of my childhood days where i'll be awkwardly turning a page of a national geographic book to find monkey boobs

[–]xiaorobear 25 points26 points ago

what

[–]Untrue_Story 28 points29 points ago

[–]graham6942 4 points5 points ago

I'm actually kinda hoping that statement was supposed to be racist.

[–]crazyxen 182 points183 points ago

As an anthropology major, I can confirm Orangutans hate rain enough to make nests with roofs to cover themselves from the rain.

[–]counterhero 218 points219 points ago

Google expert here. I can confirm.

[–]flopus 79 points80 points ago

Expert Expert I can confirm his credentials

[–]captainmorgan23 46 points47 points ago

Dance Party expert here. He checks out.

[–]Booyeahgames 52 points53 points ago

Dance Party police here. The previous Dance Party expert has been brought under charges that he is too legit to quit.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points ago

MC Hammer here. I believe you meant "2 legit 2 quit".

[–]eamantite 25 points26 points ago

Obscurity here.

LOL What are you doing Hammer?

[–]bulldog_harp 5 points6 points ago

thanks for the expert information.

[–]rolleiflex 7 points8 points ago

Anthropology sure does have a liberal interpretation of anthropology, if your major covers this. Pretty interesting though!

[–]crazyxen 28 points29 points ago

It's pretty broad, anything from linguistics to primate ecology is covered by anthropology.

[–]ooowl 16 points17 points ago

Not really. I took an anthro course that extensively covered primates because it was a course on human evolution.

[–]AdamDaze 98 points99 points ago

I have been on that footpath, that exact place, and seen a small orangutan (About his size), do exactly the same thing when it started raining.

Went with my ex...her and her sister were redheads. little guy came ambling out the jungle and climbed up her. Then rain...he did this. Freaing out if its the same one.

It's an experience. DO IT

EDIT: I'd like to say that the single most depressing thing about this trip was the flight up north. you can see the rainforest DEVESTATION for miles. Just mind numbing expanses of de-nuded landscape. It's fucking terrible

[–]whimpymouse 36 points37 points ago

[–]A_RedditUsername 17 points18 points ago

That link is awesome. The orangutan is so calm the whole time.

[–]smegroll 14 points15 points ago

His johnnies remain unruffled.

[–]travisca 6 points7 points ago

You have rustled my jimmies by saying it that way.

[–]trevdak2 10 points11 points ago

I've heard that their strength comes from more leverage due to where their muscles are attached to the bone.

[–]mirpmirp1 60 points61 points ago

Are you saying that the orangutan thought your ex was an orangutan as well?

[–]AdamDaze 69 points70 points ago

Possibly. They apparently tend to be friendlier/more interested...and occasionally more aggressive or upset by...redheads. In fact they recommend to cover red hair.

[–]theRainChicken 17 points18 points ago

TIL I might be an orangutan.

[–]dpiston 29 points30 points ago

No, he's calling his ex an orangutan

[–]StuartSutcliffe 3 points4 points ago

Is that Sepilok? If so, me too! But he wasn't on the footpath.

[–]I_am_le_tired 3 points4 points ago

Yup, that's definitely Sepilok

[–]MissDez 109 points110 points ago

Poor librarian!!!

[–]Private_hale 17 points18 points ago

If he's lucky he'll turn into a furry red umbrella.

[–]girlfrodo 3 points4 points ago

'Multiple exclamation marks,' he went on, shaking his head, 'are a sure sign of a diseased mind.'

[–]wbeach 0 points1 point ago

This comment made my day

[–]hyphenme 1 point2 points ago

I'm happy I got the reference!

[–]LochNessSasquatch 46 points47 points ago

My up vote will save you adorable primate!!

[–]FtotheLICK 14 points15 points ago

Make sure to like the cause on Facebook. Then we will really get something going.

[–]siamesefightingfish 6 points7 points ago

That's right. There are only 30 to 60 thousand of these guys left on earth and there dwindling fast!

Not purchasing palm oil would solve 90% of the problem.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 110 points111 points ago

I saw an orangutan poke another orangutan in it's asshole once.

[–]rockfireman 36 points37 points ago

watched a grown up orangutan eat some food, then throw it up and then eat it again, your move.

[–]grommetik 47 points48 points ago

person from borneo here, who has never recovered from the childhood memory of an orang-utan grabbing a shoe off foot and then EATING it.

[–]empireminer 23 points24 points ago

Must have thought you were carrying around snacks on your hand-feet.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 27 points28 points ago

On the same occasion, I saw an orangutan going from one tree house to another via a rope. It was walking on the rope like a sloth does. About halfway across it fell down (maybe 15 feet or so).

[–]eolson3 23 points24 points ago

That got depressing. I've seen them try to poop on people from those lines.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 26 points27 points ago

Eh, it wasn't depressing. The orangutan was fun. It just looked slightly embarrassed.

[–]Kenitzka 12 points13 points ago

See... Now if you ever get busted for poking other people's buttholes, you can simply explain that it's the natural thing to do.

[–]SanchoDeLaRuse 13 points14 points ago

Kancho.

[–]urbanpsycho 19 points20 points ago

that made me aww.. and im a robotic man.. does that mean that i am developing emotions?

[–]ftardontherun 6 points7 points ago

Was this at Camp Leaky?

EDIT: Nope, in Malay North Borneo

I was in the Indonesian South, and saw these guys.

[–]ygho[S] 16 points17 points ago

She said this was at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan

[–]i_will_touch_ur_nose 24 points25 points ago

Is this for criminal orangutans?

[–]spocksbrain 26 points27 points ago

this is what i look like when i take a shower every morning. depression ftw.

[–]john25414 3 points4 points ago

Read that as Bonnaroo...was wondering how an orangutan got there...

[–]Penola 5 points6 points ago

aww poor little fella

[–]rabidllama 5 points6 points ago

Tomorrow's Headline: Redditors Donate 50,000 Umbrellas to the Apes of Borneo

[–]Boatright 3 points4 points ago

This is the first time a post in this sub actually made me say "awwww" out loud.

[–]frazzledinptc 3 points4 points ago

[–]cece1978 4 points5 points ago

most primates don't like the rain. and also, orangutans can't swim very well.

[–]MyDaddyTaughtMeWell 4 points5 points ago

His tucked in toes make me feel chilled! I wish I could shelter that little buddy.

[–]atharen 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure I've been there! Is this at Sepilok?

[–]TrentKama 2 points3 points ago

Walk over and hold an umbrella over it. IMMEDIATE MOVIE RIGHTS.

[–]matts2 1 point2 points ago

No picture to show but we were caught in a downpour on a hike in Costa Rica (Osa). A troop of howlers were in the top of a nearby tree. And they started howling indeed. It seemed like a bit of it was to make sure the rest of the troop was OK, but they were clearly unhappy. We could see the wet sad faced monkeys huddling in the tree.

[–]wittlewayne 1 point2 points ago

too many feels bro

[–]Michael0609 2 points3 points ago

Damn! I have the sudden urge to go hold an umbrella over the poor guys head!

[–]sarahbellem 2 points3 points ago

My..... Feels.....

[–]jessieh04 2 points3 points ago

someone get this guy an umbrella stat!

[–]MazlowRevolution 0 points1 point ago

This is so sad. They have a shared culture, and should have been taught to make shelters at a young age.

This is like watching an advanced alien species dominate humanity back into the stone age.

I'm not an environmentalist, but I do believe in Simian rights.

[–]FaerieStories 3 points4 points ago

Ha! Try learning how to make fire now!

[–]Orangutan 1 point2 points ago

Good picture.

[–]c0t0d0 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, chimps are the same way. Shame they can't make their living in a desert habitat.

[–]Begerken 1 point2 points ago

Hmm seems like Borneo is a terrible place to live if you don't enjoy the rain.

[–]Professional-Genius 1 point2 points ago

Aaaaand I'm a little girl.

[–]jskahan846 1 point2 points ago

That pic makes me want to go hold an umbrella over it.

[–]MSCALX 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me, or are all orangutans just a bit insane?

[–]fieroturbo 1 point2 points ago

That poor little guy. I want to give him an umbrella.

[–]TattoosNgirlyHearts 1 point2 points ago

Quick! Find it a large leaf and cover it's head and whisper to it sweet nothing's!

[–]thtguyjosh 1 point2 points ago

give him a blanket and snuggle him right now!!

[–]manymilesthatway 0 points1 point ago

Where is this? I think I've been there, can't remember the name off the top of my head.

[–]SociableIntrovert 0 points1 point ago

Is her name Rachel?

[–]Epiphany214 1 point2 points ago

Grab him an umbrella! Don't watch him suffer

[–]zoeypantalones 1 point2 points ago

Oh little buddy! I want to give him an umbrella!

[–]aakyl -1 points0 points ago

Won't take long for this to become a meme...

[–]scout-finch 1 point2 points ago

This is such a sad picture!

[–]lilpuddincup 1 point2 points ago

I think I remember reading that orangutans had been observed using banana leaves as little umbrellas.

[–]Davey_Disapproves -1 points0 points ago

Is the orang hiding behind your sister?

[–]inthebreeze711 0 points1 point ago

They are people man....people....

[–]seancolorado[!] 0 points1 point ago

Could you ask your sister where she took this picture? (as in which village/location; which reserve)

[–]2ShakesofaLambsTail 0 points1 point ago

This is me after a hit of LSD

[–]Windingstare 1 point2 points ago

I like this new trend of animals disliking the rain. First the puppy now this. What species next?

[–]Zaxim 0 points1 point ago

My first thought in looking at this picture was, "Don't hit me bro!"

[–]mixed_cocktail 0 points1 point ago

Sepilok Rehab Centre at Sandakan, Sabah? Proud to see this on the front page! My mum used to have two pet orang utans but gave them up to the centre when having pet orang utans became illegal...

[–]katierpillar 1 point2 points ago

Someone get that lil baby an umbrella!

[–]sfdmfcssfd 1 point2 points ago

Aw, little man.

[–]petesmedia 1 point2 points ago

Why did your sister just sit there on the bridge in the rain if she does not like it?

[–]lipsheutz 1 point2 points ago

Give him an umbrella!!

[–]J__CS -1 points0 points ago

I have been there! On that very walkway I saw a mother orangutan punch a man in the face, he was decked.

[–]J__CS -1 points0 points ago

THIS IS SEPILOK!

[–]vinegarstrokes420 0 points1 point ago

I just want to go give the poor guy a hug and then try to keep him from tearing my arms off

[–]classiqueP29 0 points1 point ago

DON'T JUST STAND THERE, GIVE HIM AN UMBRELLA RIGHT NOW

[–]Jarl_Walnut 0 points1 point ago

I find this incredibly sad.

[–]pfftYeahRight 0 points1 point ago

Does any animal enjoy rain?

[–]ademnus 0 points1 point ago

that actually produced an audible, "aww."

[–]theunicorn 0 points1 point ago

My favorite non-human primate!

[–]gabriot 0 points1 point ago

They also like to roll around and shit

[–]littlegreenpanda 0 points1 point ago

I can't believe I'm related to this guy.

[–]420lols 0 points1 point ago

Where is the witty Discworld comment? I'm too stoned to find it.

[–]bv0747 0 points1 point ago

I want to hand that little guy an umbrella.

[–]AngelWoosh -1 points0 points ago

Is that at Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary? I was there a few weeks ago! It rains every day, quite heavily.

[–]traxxes -1 points0 points ago

Is this the sanctuary near sandakan ?

[–]Shibby9386 0 points1 point ago

This makes me sad.

[–]Phredex 0 points1 point ago

Disproving again that Orangutans are as intelligent as humans. We at least know how to get under the bridge to get out of the rain.

[–]rackball22 -1 points0 points ago

shouldn't have jumped off the fuckin bed

[–]thunderrr 0 points1 point ago

awwww :(((((

[–]andyeddy8 0 points1 point ago

[–]CarolineDaae 0 points1 point ago

This actually made me cry a little bit :') So sad...but so cute! :3

[–]Great_SaiyaMan 0 points1 point ago

[–]brussels4breakfast 0 points1 point ago

[–]Nikuro10 0 points1 point ago

[–]clairioes 0 points1 point ago

Part of me feels sorry for the poor little guy, but then I remember they're poo flinging asshats.

[–]Kujen 0 points1 point ago

aww that's a great photo

[–]murarara 0 points1 point ago

If you look at it long enough, you start seeing as if its head came out of its chest... can't unsee...

[–]elmonoenano 0 points1 point ago

This is why we don't have more orangutans in Portland.

[–]cjcraig86 1 point2 points ago

Give that thing an umbrella!

[–]MyBoyfriendIsAFucker 1 point2 points ago

This makes me sad. Someone get them an umbrella!
