One day I hope to be half as badass as this guy.

[–]bigcitycrows 78 points79 points ago

Until you realize he's from The Thailand Tiger Temple and the "benevolent, loving monk caring after poor, orphaned tigers" spiel is total bullshit to cover up an abusive, dirty tourist trap that can't explain where they get their tigers or where their tigers go.

...:C

[–]malfunktionv2 21 points22 points ago

You just ruined so many people's day, including me :(

EDIT: From what I've read so far, the tigers in the temple are displayed in an area without shade, so this picture is probably not from there.

[–]bigcitycrows 11 points12 points ago

[–]malfunktionv2 7 points8 points ago

I would own the fuck out of a tiger.

[–]WrongThreadCommenter 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I am.

[–]malfunktionv2 6 points7 points ago

[–]bigcitycrows 16 points17 points ago

For your edit: It's a picture from the temple, here's the same monk, caption "Thailand Tiger Temple". They use the uniform to impress tourists.

From this picture, it's the same guy and sitting place; it's one tree providing shade over a tree stump, but not shade for all the tigers to be under.

[–]malfunktionv2 14 points15 points ago

A couple of things. First, I'm not just doubting you because "There's no wai blah blah blah that monk is amazing blah."

The pdf explicitly states that the outside area has zero shade for the tigers, this picture fits that description. I imagine the now defunct website tigertempletruths had more concrete evidence and photos.

In the two pictures of the same monk they are clearly in a shaded area.

The photo from ABC is just a post, there is no story linked and could be easily misconstrued as being from the TTT.

The photos of the monk shows the tigers are not chained down at all, whereas in the other photo they all are.

Again, I'm not fighting against you, just pointing out possible flaws. I don't study tiger abuse as you possibly could. If you have more proof then I'll digest it without reserve.

[–]bigcitycrows 9 points10 points ago

The picture of the same monk can be found on the Thailand Tiger Temple's website, uploaded by them, on the first page of the photo gallery, 5 rows over and 6 rows down notice his tattoos are the same as the ones on the man in the submission photo here

There are different holding/display areas, this tree appears to be shading a sitting stump for the monks on the edge. Most of the photos of tourists and tigers have the tigers chained or laying down on the bare ground away from shade, probably in the typical "canyon" area.

[–]malfunktionv2 5 points6 points ago

So in other words they put more effort into looking like they treat the tigers well and knowingly treat them like shit. Back to being sad...

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

Will the person downvoting myself and malfunktion please stand up?

Are you especially sad at the prospect of tigers being abused, or are you a secret Internet agent for the Tiger Temple angry at it being exposedas a terrible place?

[–]partanimal 1 point2 points ago

doing my part to balance it out ... upvoting to increase visibility.

[–]hypotheticalfive 3 points4 points ago

Well, I myself have been to this tiger temple, and probably seen and maybe even touched this same tiger. It was quite obviously a scandalous place, but from what I saw all the tigers were accompanied by a helper, who was providing shade and water constantly to the tigers. They were allowed free roaming when the place was close for tourists. The baby tigers probably weren't treated well at all but fuck me they were cute.

[–]silter 3 points4 points ago

I think my soul just shattered q_q

[–]ohgawwd -2 points-1 points ago

o_O.. These are tigers. Theyre wild animals. If you abuse them they have no problem leaving your face on the ground for you to pick back up. Theres a reason why you cant domesticate them. Sure they probably dont wipe their asses with charmin toilet paper like americans treat cats but theyre not exactly torturing them. Youre acting like they should be taking exceptional care of these animals when these 3rd world people go home to just as shitty housing as these tigers.

[–]bigcitycrows 3 points4 points ago

Yes, yes, all good points on why you shouldn't abuse them and should be very careful in their keeping, and why this place is stupid/cruel to do so.

Sure they probably dont wipe their asses with charmin toilet paper like americans treat cats but theyre not exactly torturing them.

Neglect, abuse, overbreeding, severely lacking nutrition and housing, and trade/exchange that is sketchy at best and black-market criminal at worst is not "not wiping their asses with charmin."

Youre acting like they should be taking exceptional care of these animals

Their care (or lack thereof) is below what I'd consider minimum standards for a place that claims to be saving them and have so many, yes.

when these 3rd world people go home to just as shitty housing as these tigers.

The place is operated largely by international volunteers who pay to come because they like petting tigers and work for free/pay room&board to the owner. Going by the prices they charge and the number of people they shuffle through, the guys higher up in onwership/business-running most certainly are not barely scraping by or themselves peasants. Regardless, places like this tourist trap should not be supported; it's not like they have to have tigers or there aren't better avenues of responsible ecotourism that don't include animal abuse and trade in endangered animals or straight-up lying to visitors.

[–]ohgawwd -2 points-1 points ago

You should setup an alternative place for the tigers to go. Also, if there are better places already setup how come we're not seeing pics of these wonderful places on reddit instead of this apparent "hell-hole." I like tigers fam, I'd love to see some morally sound monk feeding a happy tiger from a bowl. Especially cuz we wont have to read comments like yours, not that theres anything wrong with exposing "bad people."

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

You should setup an alternative place for the tigers to go.

Or we could sit here while they breed more and more tigers.

Also, if there are better places already setup how come we're not seeing pics of these wonderful places on reddit instead of this apparent "hell-hole."

Because sane, responsible places don't put random people from the street on the backs of 500-pound obligate carnivores. People post pictures of tigers from AZA-accredited zoos all the time, but these get more attention because everyone likes to think people + tigers is a wonderful, magical idea to implement.

I like tigers fam, I'd love to see some morally sound monk feeding a happy tiger from a bowl.

Are we looking at a different picture? Because the "morally sound monks" are kind of assholes all told.

not that theres anything wrong with exposing "bad people."

I'm glad you agree.

[–]ohgawwd 0 points1 point ago

Im saying i want to see a pic of a morally sound monk feeding a tiger from a bowl. I know this isnt one. Not all monks are bad right? I'm only alluding to your claim that there are "better avenues of responsible ecotourism." How come we dont see pics of these places? :(

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

Oh. :( I'm sorry. Now I feel like the humungous asshole.

Alternatives that aren't bad would be things like sustainable hiking, guided "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" tours of national parks, some of the better zoos, canoeing and "oiless" outdoor ecotours, or things like the (good, you have to be careful with these, too) elephant jungle tours. The main attraction of the Tiger Temple of average, untrained people off the street paying to ride/manhandle tigers" is inherently irresponsible, but unfortunately that's what most people want. There's high demand in that one place because it's very hard to find a credible zoo in America or Europe that will agree to do it because of the variety of serious concerns it raises, like the safety of the people and the comfort of the tigers.

Everyone gets attention for posting pictures of themselves wallowing on a chained tiger, but not so much for going on a three-day trek to see a wild tiger in the distance.

[–]tokerdytoke -1 points0 points ago

Exactly..

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure how "these are tigers, they are wild animals capable of ripping faces off in an instant" can be logically followed by "-therefore letting people hug on them while they are abused is fine".

The comment goes from "what a terrible idea!" to "OMG why are you hating on them for doing the terrible idea??"

[–]skaagz 0 points1 point ago

I've always felt the same way about this picture.

[–]Sokonomi 10 points11 points ago

Are you gonna tell it cant have your lunch?

[–]MendoGreen 6 points7 points ago

[–]ohgawwd -1 points0 points ago

[–]1Ender 5 points6 points ago

It's pretty sad they treat the animals really badly at this zoo. Not something exactly cute if you know the back story.

[–]enakj 2 points3 points ago

What is the back story?

Assuming you keep your children in small cages and then trade them on the black market when they get old and unruly (not that there is anything wrong with that): http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/06/080620-tiger-temple.html

[–]jonbones 7 points8 points ago

FUCK.

i love tigers, really upsets me that their are like 2,000 left in the WHOLE WORLD.

god damn rural chinese people and their bullshit homeopathic "medicine"

[–]aalluri7 2 points3 points ago

false Homeopathy was created by some stupid German dude

this is just crazy Chinese traditional medicine

[–]ohgawwd 0 points1 point ago

broke ass rural thai people are trading around dangerous tigers to stay alive and stay fed and youre feeling bad for the tigers and not the people having to do it. i agree its definitely sad that this is happening to the tigers, im just surprised people still dont realize people will do ANYTHING for food...you have no idea what kind of conditions the 3rd world lives in...i wouldnt "god damn" them

[–]jonbones 0 points1 point ago

i've been to poor areas in india several times, i have some idea of what conditions the 3rd world lives in.

maybe my priorities are a little off, but i'd hate for one of my favorite animals in the world to go extinct before my kids could see em.

[–]ohgawwd 0 points1 point ago

i feel u fam. i dont wanna see them extinct either. i just think we'll ultimately have to fix the 3rd world problem before we get to saving some tigers. the issue isnt that these 3rd world people love killing tigers...its that theyre broke and have to find an avenue for income. a set number of stable preservations for tigers while we fix the world economy should do. if a couple are corrupt and fuck shit up i dont think it will be the definite end of tigers.

[–]GrumpyOldDreamer 0 points1 point ago

It's not so much fixing the "3rd worlds problems" that is needed, you just have to address the "need" for the tiger products. The whole situation is consumer driven, someone will always supply anything if there is a demand.

[–]lussie -2 points-1 points ago

What gives humans the right to live and not tigers? Just because we're able to?

So when some other dominant species comes along, are they allowed to kill us and treat us like a commodity just because they can?

[–]ohgawwd -1 points0 points ago

no but if a more dominant species is killing us and treating us like shit cuz they themselves are broke and hungry, how do you suppose we fix the situation?

they have to find food and money from alternative places so they can survive.

why do you kill germs and buy anti-biotics when youre sick? what about those poor germ cells just living in your body trying to survive? :(

you kill that shit off..cuz ur a human and ur about that life

[–]Mysanthropy 0 points1 point ago

"Just because we're able to" That is exactly why. The species with the best capabilities will survive and others will die out. I think what you really want to get at though is why we let this happen, and the reason is overpopulation and a government that doesn't give a shit. And yes another dominant species can do what they will with us, maybe they won't or maybe we can fight them off, but we won't know until it happens. Reality isn't always filled with good news, for many people everyday is a fight to stay alive.

[–]lussie 1 point2 points ago

But the problem with that argument is that ecosystems have balances. When we kill off one animal, it affects that ecosystem, and that change may end up being harmful to the earth and us. We have to maintain a balance.

[–]ohgawwd 0 points1 point ago

do u believe in killing cockroaches? not the entire species but just the ones in ur house. what gives us the right to live in our house and not the flies and cockroaches?

[–]HeartofPorcelain 3 points4 points ago

This saddens me. Damn.

[–]orblivion2000 -3 points-2 points ago

So I could gets one?!?!?!?!?!? I has a chance?!?!?!!??!

[–]fIump 0 points1 point ago

No, Luca No..

[–]Captain_Jesus_USA 2 points3 points ago

I really want to domesticate a tiger...

Same here. Or even one of those house cats that look like little tigers.

[–]STEADy_TOKErX 1 point2 points ago

This makes me want to become a monk.

[–]Klapiacus 0 points1 point ago

I was a monk in Thailand over the summer :)

It's a great experience, would highly recommend trying it one day.

[–]vocaltalentz 0 points1 point ago

Did you have to pay to do it or anything? Or donate money?

[–]Klapiacus 0 points1 point ago

I did, but the money was donated to me to give to the temple. I can't remember how much, but it was quite a lot, like ~£1000.

[–]DRitt13 1 point2 points ago

Is there an arm growing out of this guy's back?

Try to follow his tattoos.

[–]BlackRockKitty 1 point2 points ago

I've been to that temple in Thailand!! So amazing. I kissed a tiger :D

[–]libbyjon 1 point2 points ago

But he has 3 arms!

I'm surprised Reddit isn't bitching and pissing about his tattoos. I guess they're okay when they're on a monk and not a white guy just trying to have a coffee somewhere Right, hivemind?
