Like the post. For some info though they will most likely sell the brand so even though they went out of business, someone (a corporation) will probably buy it and production will continue. They also are keeping open their distributors till all product is gone. If it moves fast we might not even see Hostess off the shelf at all.

thats not it at all the company was cutting there workers wages for over 8 years and after the recent cut in pay people saw their pay checks and said fuck that. My step dad is the guy that drives the trucks and has worked there for 25 years and lost his job yesterday. the part that pisses me off the most is the CEOS of the company were getting millions of dollars in bonuses while the workers were getting cuts in pay. fucking BS now we will have to sell our house and move fuck this economy.

Yes, but it is entirely likely a corporation will simply buy out hostess and production will continue under new management. Hostess and it's products are iconic, I highly doubt products like twinkies will be gone forever.

Yes, and your step dad's union (I'm asssuming he is a teamster, as that is the primary group handling trucking for Hostess) took the renegotiated offering. The baker's union on the other hand, well they either believed that liquidation was a bluff or they believed the rumors that someone was waiting to swooping and acquire the brands without interruption. Either way, they appear to have been wrong. So you might want to lay some of the blame with them.

What I don't understand is why Hostess can't raise their prices.

Apparently the whole Internet (or at least the US part) is in an uproar over the imminent loss of Twinkies; you'd think people would pay a little more to ensure a steady supply.

Then again, I'm not from the US, so for all I know Twinkies could be selling for $20 per cake. In that case, maybe they should lower the price a bit.

So the company was put out of business because the union rejected the contract and went on strike in order to get better compensation. Only to lose all of their jobs, and the company brands will probably be bought out by non-union corporations. The union might have really fucked itself over on this one.

To be honest workers were to take a 8% cut while high level managers were getting an 80%+ raise. If the company was in trouble everyone should sacrifice to get things moving again. All we read about is "unions bad" but I imagine it is not as clear cut.

Spoken like someone who doesn't have a real job and keeps on blaming the economy on everything. We've been steadily coming out of the economic recession and have almost completely recovered. Of course there had been people fucking up the company. That's why they had to keep hiring new CEO's (7 in the last decade if I remember correctly) to try to get the job done correctly. Nevertheless, if the company was to survive, everyone had to take an 8% cut.

Unions turn what should be a variable cost into a fixed cost. Not only do they inhibit wage fluctuations, but more importantly as output naturally decreases during recessive periods, they insists labor stays the same. I've worked at my current employer (a mid-sized union-free company) for over 6 years. Back in 2009, we all took at temporary 20% pay cut to avoid layoffs. Was I ecstatic, of course not, but I'm still employed. Unions (particularly in the manufacturing industry) had their time and place, when work conditions and hours were atrocious, decades ago. Now, in my opinion, they drive the cost up on US goods and hurt our national economy. Bring on the downvotes as I'm sure I don't share in the popular opinion of Reddit.

You mentioned Little Debbie, but discounted their success. The very successful existence of Little Debbie with competing products for almost every one of Hostess' products argues they do not have a monopoly.

Whether Hostess' products are any more or less healthy than any of the rest, I wouldn't know.

Don't get me wrong, Little Debbies as a company is successful. It's just that Hostess prevents Little Debbies from stepping on their toes for the most part, so if a store (take Safeway for example) sells both brands, Hostess sells their awful twinkies and cupcakes, whereas the Little Debbies will be restricted to honey buns and other sub standard snack fare. If you want a creme filled spongecake Twinkie like treat, you are stuck with the Hostess option, which has fucking lard in it and as someone who does not eat meat this really pisses me off. Little Debbies Golden Creme's do not have lard, and I can eat them. If you want Little Debbies Golden Cremes and not Hostess Twinkies however, you have to order them online, or look very hard to find a store not under Hostess's vast grip... For that, I utterly despise Hostess, not to mention the extra chemicals industrial bullshit they consistently use in the products...

I've never noticed the restriction but I'm not what you'd call a big buyer. The gas station I go to here usually has a hostess and a little debbie section and there are usually competing products.

That said, even if what you're saying is true, is this contractual with the vendor to get the ability to buy hostess products? If so, I'm surprised the vendors agreed to that.

I have no idea. Like most shady business practices, I imagine it's more of a backroom agreement at the top levels of the suppliers though, since vendors basically stock whatever the truck brings while they themselves are not in charge of stocking the truck. The truck comes with zero Golden Cremes, but plenty of Twinkies, so that's what's on the shelf.

I grew up on Twinkies/Hostess. Stopped eating them ~20yrs ago along with all other meat/meat products. Took a while to even find vegetarian alternatives to exist, but even still it is nearly impossible to find them in stores; while there is never ever a shortage of fucking Twinkies. Anywhere. I'm well traveled in USA, and I've not noticed much difference in the ratios around the country, but ultimately my evidence is purely anecdotal.
