The Earth isn't overpopulated. If "conscientious and responsible" people are not breeding because they think that it is, that just means that they're breeding responsible people out of existence. The world is only overpopulated when it's past its carrying capacity at which point increased mortality rates will bring it back down to carrying capacity.

I like how when anyone brings this up, "increased mortality rates" and population decrease get thrown around like they're no big deal. Only an untold millions upon millions of untimely deaths, nothing to see here...

Would it not make sense to be addressing a known problem now, before it becomes utterly critical and that fluffy, world-fixing "population decrease" (read: hideous human suffering) kicks in?

The point is that with that you should be considering humanity, mankind, everyone as a whole. We are sharing this rock and its resources. The overpopulation banhammer could fall on you and everyone you've ever known and held dear, too.

Lineage as a concept doesn't mean much outside of the context and importance that humans give it. Individual contributions can, and do, mean a lot more. From a purely biological perspective -- and this is the only one in which lineage matters -- your theoretical 12 kids will serve to carry your genes around. Hopefully they're good ones?

Also, no matter how self sufficient your pack of offspring is, there's a number of things that could cause massive 'population decrease' in their direction that you will be unable to do anything about. The sort of things which's chances go up exponentially in a shit's-gone-down world. You can survive in that world but you can't thrive in it. We ideally want a world where everyone can do the latter.

I know you likely intended that all in a derogatory fashion, but. Whatever.
