I came here because I didn't like god, and ended up looking at pictures of cats.

[–]wjeman 60 points61 points ago

A friend of mine, who was involved with me in church youth when we were younger, heard me doubting god, and referred me to r/atheism, his favorite site... a year later and I absolutely can't stop looking at cats.

[–]MrMastodon 15 points16 points ago

I didn't like god or cats when I came here. I'm just here for the AskReddit stories.

[–]StopReadingMyUser 2 points3 points ago

ALL HAIL THE KITTEN GODS!!!

[–]heiny81 18 points19 points ago

Let he who is without cats cast the first cat. So say we all.

[–]jheald1 26 points27 points ago

ceiling cat is testing her faith...

[–]lavidoth 12 points13 points ago

Damn cats they always make people question their faith.

[–]PlasmaBurns 0 points1 point ago

Cat says, "no, you worship me".

[–]DarthSatoris 48 points49 points ago

I have a feeling Reddit tends to do that...

A lot.

[–]Mflms 29 points30 points ago

It kind of makes me sad. People will give give up life long beliefs regardless of their validity, because cause a grumpy cat told them to.

Edit: Ouch... the wrath of /r/atheism.

[–]StopReadingMyUser 10 points11 points ago

If they're willing to change their beliefs on a whim then they were never strong holders of them in the first place.

[–]Mflms 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. That comment was my attempt at humorously pointing out how trivial statements like, "thanks to Reddit and a few days of looking at funny pictures I have been cured of God." (though this is also a simplified exaggeration)

I just get tired of ignoring comments things like this.

[–]JMP1147 0 points1 point ago

BUUUUUURN!!!!

[–]polarbearrape 26 points27 points ago

You know... That or common sense... I take it back. It's probably the cat.

[–]Mflms 20 points21 points ago

It has to be the cat, because common sense sure as shit ain't common.

[–]polarbearrape 5 points6 points ago

Well played. I know when to admit defeat.

[–]Mflms 5 points6 points ago

HOLY FUCKING FUCK! Did you admit defeat on the internet.

Now I don't feel like a winner. Humility, devious, well played sir. Well fucking played.

[–]polarbearrape 0 points1 point ago

I'm... I'm not sure if i feel good or bad about what just happened... well played to you too?

[–]dublea 1 point2 points ago

common sense sure as shit ain't common

The term everyone keeps forgetting is sensibility. Not everyone is sensible.

[–]PlasmaBurns 2 points3 points ago

My faith in God got a lot stronger thanks to reddit.

[–]DarthSatoris 2 points3 points ago

How?

[–]PlasmaBurns 5 points6 points ago

People asked questions and I had to read the bible to back my responses. I did more thinking and solidified my beliefs. I know why I believe things better.

[–]DarthSatoris 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough...

[–]senor_smooth 125 points126 points ago

And /r/atheism just collectively ejaculated all over themselves.

[–]2Minutes5MinutesAgo 17 points18 points ago

You mean more than usual, right?

[–]awesomechemist 73 points74 points ago

But not because of this post... that's just the modus opperandi over there.

[–]rasputine 56 points57 points ago

...as opposed to what you're doing right now? Stroke to the left babe.

[–]polarbearrape 22 points23 points ago

You get an up vote for making me uncomfortable.

[–]pwnb0t 2 points3 points ago

says polarbearrape

[–]polarbearrape 1 point2 points ago

Says I

[–]cornbread_tp -1 points0 points ago

Everything is le circlejerk, babby!

[–]Surfacetovolume 6 points7 points ago

You're making it seem like a lot more fun than it really is.

[–]dublea 1 point2 points ago

Modus operandi

Got an extra p there bud. Also, ty for getting me to learn something new. Wouldn't have seen the error had I not gone to see what it was =P

[–]porkmaster 0 points1 point ago

skeet skeet skeet, mothafucka.

[–]godlessyosef 28 points29 points ago

Come for that cat pics, stay for the ungodliness.

[–]DebacleRoberts 54 points55 points ago

It took me a year and a half of interaction with purely atheists to make me even consider such. Even then I land on agnosticism, at the worst of times.

My friend have never spoken a word to me about my beliefs.

Believe what you want, I guess is my point. Don't let motherfuckers tell you what to believe.

Edit: I've avoided a full-on Reddit religious discussion until now, 'cause I'm a bad example. Hearing other civil views is pretty rad.

[–]OneBigBug 5 points6 points ago

Don't believe things because other people tell you to, but you probably shouldn't just believe whatever you want. It'd probably be great if I believed that the world was made out of chocolate until I took my first bite. I want to believe it, though.

Think about stuff critically and poke holes in people's arguments and then make your own with what you know and see if people can poke holes in those. Whether it be with regard to religion or anything else, it's hard to go wrong if you constantly test.

[–]Surfacetovolume 11 points12 points ago

Except about the cats.

[–]bodaciousbilly 26 points27 points ago

No. Fuck you and your cats.

[–]Kitty_McBitty 14 points15 points ago

Don't fuck with cats, seriously don't.

[–]bodaciousbilly 6 points7 points ago

I will fuck every one of your cats, and look you in the eye while doing so.

[–]Kitty_McBitty 7 points8 points ago

FYI cat penises are barbed so... you might have a hard time staring back with tears welling up in your eyes.

[–]elephantechoes 5 points6 points ago

Unless bodaciousbilly is male...

[–]bodaciousbilly 4 points5 points ago

Yes billy is typically a male name.

[–]bodaciousbilly 4 points5 points ago

That's Billie, not Billy. Plus Amy was better.

[–]polarbearrape 1 point2 points ago

Seriously... That's hardly a challenge.

[–]GirlWithThePandaHat 0 points1 point ago

-gasp- that's illegal!

[–]Surfacetovolume -1 points0 points ago

:(

[–]DebacleRoberts 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, no. Cats are great and fuck you if you disagree, basically.

People have been lynched for less.

[–]mattfred 1 point2 points ago

Just to be a bit of a devil's advocate here, if you believe:

Believe what you want, I guess is my point. Don't let motherfuckers tell you what to believe

At what point do you start believing anything? Any religion that you believe started with someone telling you what to believe. There is no way you would ever come to the conclusion that is any organized religion without someone saying you should believe in this.

[–]DebacleRoberts 0 points1 point ago

You're not wrong. While I grew up in a christian household, I was never taught to damn anyone for different beliefs. Nor was I absolutely forced to believe anything in particular. Call it a suggestion.

I guess I mean form your own opinions. Advice coming from someone who can't actually decide for themselves is probably not great, but I still recommend it.

[–]ThunderOrb 0 points1 point ago

I'll probably get downvoted to Hell for this (if anyone reads it), but I think Atheists are just as ignorant as Theists. We don't know there is a God. We don't know there isn't one. To fully make a claim either way is pure ignorance. One can only assume. (And we all know assuming make an ass of u and me.)

Edit: And heeerree they come.

[–]lol_panda 2 points3 points ago

You shouldn't be getting downvoted. If reddit was as knowledgeable about their hero Carl Sagan as they claim to be they'd know that this was exactly his belief.

[–]ThunderOrb 1 point2 points ago

I've met some pretty defensive Atheists when I've said such things. You'd almost think they worship having nothing to worship.

[–]thesweats -1 points0 points ago

So everything imaginable exists until disproven?

[–]ThunderOrb 1 point2 points ago

Does having a little bit of faith in something make someone as ignorant as others like to claim?

[–]DebacleRoberts 0 points1 point ago

I agree, anyhow. That's why I think agnosticism is... viable? For lack of a better word, I suppose. While I may not be heavily affiliated with either side, one side claiming intellectual/moral superiority over the other makes me wanna headbutt a wall.

[–]MrDannyOcean 0 points1 point ago

Atheism does not mean you claim there is 100% no god.

Atheism is simply the lack of a belief in god. I can't claim I'm positive there is no god (because it's hard to disprove something invisible and unknowable), but I don't currently believe in any god/gods, and for that reason I consider myself an atheist.

[–]southdubify 2 points3 points ago

YOU USED THE CORRECT CAPTION! I.....I.....I think I love you.....

[–]RenseBenzin 9 points10 points ago

[–]El_Nacho_Cheese 5 points6 points ago

I still believe in God.

[–]Bigcat710 3 points4 points ago

Same

[–]gunluva 3 points4 points ago

Ditto. Been here a little more than a year, and still believe.

[–]El_Nacho_Cheese 2 points3 points ago

To be honest I thought I was going to get downvoted into oblivion but, it seems I was wrong. This just shows that redditors are the nicest people you can meet.....or the cruelest people if you are a dick.

[–]gunluva 1 point2 points ago

Actually, even if you're nice you can get downvoted to Narnia.

[–]GirlWithThePandaHat 0 points1 point ago

Damn that almost makes me want to get down voted. Narnia rocks! I'll finally find my missing socks!

[–]androidcutie 1 point2 points ago

Ah, the good ole' power of knowledge.

[–]PlasmaBurns 0 points1 point ago

I never found cats to be all that knowledgeable.

[–]HoldmysunnyD 6 points7 points ago

Your wife found /r/spacedicks

[–]cooklikenonna 23 points24 points ago

Chalk one up for /r/atheism

[–]BossMojoman 78 points79 points ago

Please, more likely she found r/spacedicks :)

[–]topp3r[S] 31 points32 points ago

o please no

[–]2muffins 2 points3 points ago

Why else could make you loose faith in God faster?

[–]polarbearrape 8 points9 points ago

/r/spacedicks would shake the popes faith....

[–]JMP1147 0 points1 point ago

i wanna click that link, but my brain is telling me "NOPE"

[–]polarbearrape 0 points1 point ago

"NOPE" is the correct reaction. Go with your instincts.

[–]force_edge 7 points8 points ago

much more likely

[–]Cormophyte 1 point2 points ago

There has never been a more fortuitous omission of a /. Ever.

[–]superdillin 4 points5 points ago

Similarly, when I started redditing I was an apathetic, agnostic atheist. The exposure to so many articles/videos/stories/news pieces relating to religion that I previously would never have seen encouraged me to feel a lot more passionate about secular issues.

Also, I started noticing how often I apologized in my daily life for not being religious and how I was walking on eggshells on topics that should be important enough to discuss.

[–]4realthistime 4 points5 points ago

Tell her about gw

[–]topp3r[S] 10 points11 points ago

I suggested that once.

[–]trikillr42 1 point2 points ago

good on you.

[–]codesign 3 points4 points ago

Maybe she is dyslexic and she meant dog.

[–]Choppa790 1 point2 points ago

I am an atheist, but /r/atheism makes me like Christians a lot more.

[–]justscottaustin 3 points4 points ago

What kind and just God would allow Reddit to exist?

[–]GirlWithThePandaHat 10 points11 points ago

The same one who invented the platypus. The one creature both science and religion shrug on.

[–]LePandaMan 1 point2 points ago

One who gave freewill.

[–]holyice7 3 points4 points ago

Two months really isn't quick. It's a fair chunk of time for someone to shift somewhat in their world view, and start getting introspective about what they really think.

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 3 points4 points ago

I agree, but when you're young there's nothing wrong with it. Best way to learn and grow. I'm subscribed to various subs. r/Christianity and r/TrueAtheism are two of my favorites. The defaults seem to have less indepth conversations. (I play devils advocate a lot, regardless of my beliefs/lack of. Usually if I do that in a default, it's common to get only angry responses.) Now I enjoy a lot of /r/atheism but it's not where I would go to build an opinion, I go there for a good hearty laugh at the expense of religion. Now r/Drunk is still the friendliest bar in town.

[–]Audiovore 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if you know, but if you just use /r/subname it will auto link to a sub.

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 1 point2 points ago

I did not know this. Thank you. Formatting help did not help me.

[–]JMP1147 1 point2 points ago

nope, /r/trees seems to be the friendliest

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 0 points1 point ago

We should get them together, I'll bring the whiskey.

[–]JMP1147 1 point2 points ago

go home MoreWhiskeyPls, you're drunk

[–]Kar98_Byf42 0 points1 point ago

[–]ent_higherly_awesome -3 points-2 points ago

If you let a bunch of petulant neck beards alter your perception of religion, you're gonna have a bad time.

Edit: how dare I say anything bad about r/atheism. I must be a blind christian fanatic.

[–]PrimeIntellect 5 points6 points ago

So people that don't believe in a higher power are petulant neckbeards?

[–]bigrob1 0 points1 point ago

David Albert, an atheist professor wrote this in the NY times review of Larence Krauss ' A universe from nothing' and it somes up the experience I have with most annoying atheists.

And I guess it ought to be mentioned, quite apart from the question of whether anything Krauss says turns out to be true or false, that the whole business of approaching the struggle with religion as if it were a card game, or a horse race, or some kind of battle of wits, just feels all wrong — or it does, at any rate, to me. When I was growing up, where I was growing up, there was a critique of religion according to which religion was cruel, and a lie, and a mechanism of enslavement, and something full of loathing and contempt for everything essentially human. Maybe that was true and maybe it wasn’t, but it had to do with important things — it had to do, that is, with history, and with suffering, and with the hope of a better world — and it seems like a pity, and more than a pity, and worse than a pity, with all that in the back of one’s head, to think that all that gets offered to us now, by guys like these, in books like this, is the pale, small, silly, nerdy accusation that religion is, I don’t know, dumb.

[–]PrimeIntellect 0 points1 point ago

Well, I would to if I took all of my personal and spiritual inspiration from the Internet and other people. It all comes back to nature in the end, if you don't find inspiration there, you are looking in all the wrong places.

[–]DarthSatoris 7 points8 points ago

And that made absolutely no sense.

[–]ent_higherly_awesome -2 points-1 points ago

You're right, r/atheism is a completely non bias and well informed place to get all your religious information!

[–]PrimeIntellect 8 points9 points ago

Where, exactly, can someone get nonbiased religious information

[–]ent_higherly_awesome 1 point2 points ago

Because reading r/atheism really explores every side equally.

[–]slick8086 8 points9 points ago

Well you could say the same thing about a church now couldn't you?

[–]ent_higherly_awesome 5 points6 points ago

You absolutely could. Extremism, no matter the side, is no good.

[–]kwood09 0 points1 point ago

But who said anything about extremism? Is simply taking a position now extremism? There are biased churches that are completely non-extremist, just as there are biased atheists who are completely non-extremist.

[–]godlesscitizen 0 points1 point ago

Yeah and those spherical earth extremists are just as bad as the flat-earthers.

[–]SLCamper 0 points1 point ago

Which makes it totally unlike the church where you usually get your religious information... oh wait.

[–]ent_higherly_awesome -1 points0 points ago

You're simply reinforcing my point. r/atheism is, at times, just as blindly close-minded as the majority of churches.

[–]SLCamper 0 points1 point ago

And just as good a source of information too. Just because people have an opinion about something doesn't mean we shouldn't listen to them. In fact, you could argue that people who have a strong opinion are more valuable to listen to because they have the strongest arguments.

[–]Aleitheo 0 points1 point ago

That's because the 100,000 members don't all share the same opinion on everything, even the existence of gods. There are christians who are members there even.

[–]Ozzymandias 0 points1 point ago

dude, the subreddit is literally called r/atheism, you want them to be non-biased? It'd be like the subreddit /r/wehatepuppies being required to promote pictures of puppies...

[–]topp3r[S] 1 point2 points ago

haha probably true, but there was a lot more leading up to this than just reddit.

[–]bende511 1 point2 points ago

you have an awesome username, in addition to an undervalued point.

[–]MICHAELdirector 0 points1 point ago

Story of my life

[–]fappingit2u 0 points1 point ago

Also, she is one o{F} the women on r/gonewild now.

[–]skinsfan55 -1 points0 points ago

Extend the time frame, replace cats with minecraft, and you get me.

[–]religionisaparasite 2 points3 points ago

next step: baby eating.

you bring the barbecue sauce, she brings makes the baby

[–]pateb247 1 point2 points ago

front page material

[–]Sharpedgs 0 points1 point ago

R/spacedicks changes you as a person . . .

[–]Icouldbeanyone -1 points0 points ago

Thank you for saying the phrase correctly. I want to buy you a beer.

[–]mhm28 0 points1 point ago

Mwahahaha...It's working!

[–]shaynethecoker 0 points1 point ago

Next she'll be knee deep in /r/spaceclop

[–]PrimeIntellect 0 points1 point ago

reddit has gotten really weird about atheism in the last few years.

[–]wakitri 1 point2 points ago

Come for r/aww

Stay for r/atheism

[–]fishmilk 0 points1 point ago

more like, "boy! that escalated over the course of two months"

[–]ultraviolet329 0 points1 point ago

same thing happened to me, topp3r. ._. One day, I came for the cat pictures and left with truth.

[–]mynamedontfi 0 points1 point ago

I felt the same way when I first started visiting reddit, then I unsubscribed from /r/atheism.

[–]GirlWithThePandaHat 0 points1 point ago

I remember learning how to unsubscribe from subreddits. Althiesm was the first one I got rid of. Seeing posts on the front page ridiculing my beliefs annoyed me. ಠ_ಠ

[–]kammergeek14 0 points1 point ago

If this is causing her to question her faith then she should not do it. God says to not do things that make us question our faith.

[–]evanj88 0 points1 point ago

I came to reddit out of curiosity of what this place is. I find myself doubting kittens and looking at pictures of god now.

[–]i_like_pasta 0 points1 point ago

Thats reddit's evil plan, seduce you with cute cats and end up removing all your believes! I'm kidding, atheist here.

[–]RaymondTerrific 0 points1 point ago

so she found r/spacedicks huh?

[–]DudeNudem 0 points1 point ago

has she posted to r/gonewild yet?

[–]Iainfixie -2 points-1 points ago

Probably for the best, I detest religion but often don't ever bring the fact up. Mainly because no one should really care what I do or do not believe in.

[–]Kar98_Byf42 -2 points-1 points ago

[–]gravitycompels -1 points0 points ago

You just made so many peoples day.

[–]rgeguypic 1 point2 points ago

Come here for our cats. Stay here for our religious de-programming.

[–]tbscotty68 1 point2 points ago

REDDIT: come for the cats, stay for the enlightenment...and gonewild.

[–]xurtian 1 point2 points ago

Reddit: come for the kitty pics, stay for the rampant godlessness!

[–]bigrob1 1 point2 points ago

If your wife now doubts god because of a bunch of angry teenagers who make memes and impose text onto pictures of Dawkins and NDG she is an idiot.

[–]IIIlIII 1 point2 points ago

I'm somewhat curious why /r/atheism is a default subreddit, seems an odd choice all things considered. Besides, it means I need an account to browse, so browsing in foreign places becomes a hassle because I can't remember my username or password.

[–]theRainChicken -1 points0 points ago

It's default because its got a large number of subscribers and the mods didn't opt out of being default.

Therainchicken, solving obvious mysteries as they pop up.

[–]PlasmaBurns 0 points1 point ago

It shouldn't be. All the others are politically/religiously neutral. r/liberal isn't a default subreddit, we have r/politics. Granted r/politics is 99% liberals.

[–]bartlovepuch -5 points-4 points ago

Good job reddit! :)

[–]Bigcat710 3 points4 points ago

Fuck off

[–]CmdrTroll -2 points-1 points ago

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Nice work, boyyyyys!

[–]matters_i_ate -3 points-2 points ago

Regardless of whether you're religious or not, if some obnoxious, mindless posts on the Internet have that great of an effect on you you must be very weak minded.

[–]PrimeIntellect 0 points1 point ago

Are you kidding? Obviously there is a lot more about atheism on the internet than just what people talk about on reddit. Remember this is primarily a site for sharing links to other places on the internet, other documents and literature, and then dissecting them between other people reading them.

[–]matters_i_ate 0 points1 point ago

I was referring to the posts made on Reddit. Which is why I said obnoxious and mindless.

[–]Xandier_101 -3 points-2 points ago

Who upvotes this shit?

[–]dublea 1 point2 points ago
