Krampus is an Austrian tradition, hence the writing "Gruß vom Krampus" which is German and translates to "Greetings from Krampus".

It is an old tradition to send such a card anonymously to a friend pranking him/her or telling him something you wouldn't want to tell in person. Also Krampus is not "evil Santa". He is the companion of St. Nicholas and usually many guys dressed up as Krampus and some older guys dressed up as St. Nicholas' roam the streets on the evening of Dec 5th. Krampus usually frighten kids and girls by looking scary and hitting some of them with a wicker. Kids are being asked by St. Nicholas whether they did behave well in the past year and then receive small gift's in red bags that they can open next day in the morning.

Not sure about the traditions in Croatia. They might be the same but your card is definetly from Austria, probably from the 1950s.

Also, this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus

(Edit: spelling, clarity)

Germany also. :-)

[–]Viking84 6 points7 points ago

Seriously, we have a Krampus? Never heard that word before... One of these Bavarian traditions the average German has never heard of? ;-)

[–]KateNoire 5 points6 points ago

Oh sorry, should have mentioned SOUTH Germany. ;-) Yes we have it here, too. Grias God mitanand.

[–]Viking84 8 points9 points ago

Funny, and I always thought Knecht Ruprecht was Germany's evil mastermind...

[–]KateNoire 2 points3 points ago

Too!

[–]HoneyWine 2 points3 points ago

Knecht Ruprecht is the far more common evil little helper in Germany.

[–]KateNoire 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I know that, but here in the south, were time flies a little slower and tradtions rabblrabble we have a Krampus, too.

[–]Eriklogic 0 points1 point ago

an evil german mastermind, HA!

[–]TheBlackLegend 0 points1 point ago

You're thinking Hitler

[–]cf0ed2aa-bdf5-4ef6-a 4 points5 points ago

Mh, I'm in northern Baden-Württemberg and Krampus isn't very well known around here. We have Knecht Ruprecht.

[–]KateNoire 1 point2 points ago

Hah! We have BOTH! ;)

[–]Wululululu 2 points3 points ago

[–]purplecobra 5 points6 points ago

Croat here. Never heard of Krampus, and as already pointed out that's written in German.

[–]violetjoker 0 points1 point ago

You live in Prussia not Germany.

[–]Viking84 1 point2 points ago

I actually live in Norway.

[–]violetjoker 2 points3 points ago

Like I said.

[–]archibald_tuttle 2 points3 points ago

Background: Bavarians consider everything outside Bavaria as (fucking) Prussia.

[–]tzippy84 2 points3 points ago

Hey even consider Bavaria as not Bavaria (Franken) :-D

[–]Chainblaze 2 points3 points ago

As a Canadian, I have never felt so lost on the Internet

[–]16Aurora 4 points5 points ago

Traditions in Croatia are a bit different. If you haven't behaved well in the past year, you get a twig from Krampus, but they're usually decorated with bows and such to make it less scary. And to get a gift from St. Nicholas you need to clean your boots (not any kind of shoes!) and then and only then you'll get gifts.

[–]Wonk0 3 points4 points ago

well. around were I live we call them "Perchten" and the roaming on the streets of the Perchten was really fucking scary edit: they look something like this

[–]praise_the_almighty 2 points3 points ago

IN Germany he is called "Knecht Ruprecht".

[–]MrTulip 0 points1 point ago

colbert report on krampus - starts at 2:30

[–]parlais[S] 1 point2 points ago

There are several countries who share this tradition.

[–]Klueverbucy 5 points6 points ago

sort of all the countries austria ruled during the monarchy in 19th century :)

[–]TheTwist 8 points9 points ago

I know a certain scientist that should fear this guy.

[–]tquinner 4 points5 points ago

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for when i saw this post.

[–]LOLFreshman 7 points8 points ago

So that's why Krampus gives you coal in The Binding of Isaac!

[–]IsaacJDean 5 points6 points ago

I knew there would be a The Binding of Isaac reference somewhere!

[–]ZQMFGB 0 points1 point ago

Came specifically to find this reference. Now I can go to bed happy.

[–]parlais[S] 7 points8 points ago

I have an American friend who volunteers at a school in Croatia. Her son was delighted when Santa paid a visit to the school, but terrified when he spotted Krampus. My kids are afraid of Santa. They would die of cardiac arrest if they saw Krampus.

[–]JimmytheSaint02 4 points5 points ago

Delicious winter offering from Southern Tier Brewing Co.:

[–]parlais[S] 1 point2 points ago

Awesome! I love quirky bottles. I had to pick up a bottle of wine with Dracula on it during my visit to Romania.

[–]Rsubs33 1 point2 points ago

Awesome beer! It was through buying the beer I learned about the folklore, since the description of him is on the bottle.

[–]arto64 4 points5 points ago

In Slovenia he's called Parkelj. He (or a group of them) accompanies St. Nicholas a.k.a. Miklavž.

[–]sadzora 1 point2 points ago

Just googled around a bit. The legend is similair everywhere but I had no idea in slovenia too. Interesting how yours is mainly dressed white and ours (dutch)mainly red. I wonder if there is a muslim nicholas too. Is miklavz pronounced similar to Nicholas?
Who are all the characters in this image? http://kandela.blog.siol.net/files/2007/12/miklavz.jpg

There is a lot more to old saint nick then i thought.

[–]arto64 1 point2 points ago

Miklavž is pronounced Meek-lau-zh, but it is derived from Nicholas. The characters in the picture are Parkeljs (devils or demons, like Krampus) and angels. I have no idea who the guy in the top-hat is supposed to be though.

[–]kjeltring 0 points1 point ago

This looks really awesome. I grew up there, shame I never got to see this.. maybe I get the chance in a few weeks.

[–]rabbitpantherhybrid 1 point2 points ago

Ha ha, yes. This should definitely be cross-posted on r/venturebros

[–]iamriboflavin 2 points3 points ago

I actually made a Krampus painting for my tattoo artist a few months ago.

[–]ElricG 3 points4 points ago

Another culture! WTF!!!!!! xDDDDDDD

[–]Nickodemus 0 points1 point ago

But... That's what the ACTUAL pagan santa did. :<

[–]iMADEthis2post 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I think I know how he punishes them.

[–]Creature77 0 points1 point ago

I hear quiet few good things about Southern Tier! Wish I could get my hands on that beer!

[–]count_olaf_lucafont 0 points1 point ago

When I was in high school in Germany, the older students put on a Christmas show for the little kiddies and Santa Claus handed out treats. After the show, two of my friends and I broke into the costume closet and stole the Krampus getup, put it on, and terrified the lil' ones into giving us all their cookies and chocolate. We were reprimanded harshly, but that just made the spoils of victory all the sweeter.

[–]Teenage_Handmodel 0 points1 point ago

I wonder what he uses that tongue for...

[–]lil_buddha 0 points1 point ago

We shall gather round the fire and lash the children with yew branches! It's a Krampus miracle!

[–]kelseykeefe 1 point2 points ago

I love this image. It's one of my favorites. I've a pinboard on pinterest for Christmas junk, and it has a lot of pictures of Krampus... I feel like Christmas in america-land is a bit too sugary sweet. We need more Krampus.

[–]ruhbluhbluh 0 points1 point ago

Posted this 8 months ago, no upvotes. For reference

[–]mirthless_smirk 0 points1 point ago

You make it sound like everyone walks around dressed up like that... kind of like saying that everyone dresses like Santa here in North America except it's really just drunks at the mall

[–]yamammiwammi 0 points1 point ago

As a Croatian, I think this is a "thing of the past" much more than it is a practiced tradition. Never in my Croatian upbringing have I heard of this practice; Krampus, yes, but not the dressing up + punishing part.

[–]Floppin 0 points1 point ago

It's more of an Austrian thing, OP just got the country wrong. We still have those sort of parades where people dress up as Krampus (although they are called "Perchten" then) and scare little kids shitless. Nowadays the costumes come with big numbers ob them so it's easier to identify people when they exaggerate the scaring part.

[–]gravion17 0 points1 point ago

By the look of that pic, looks like molestation is part of the punishment regime!

[–]Fierce_Pajamas 0 points1 point ago

I was hoping to see a reference, but since no one brought it up yet, I recommend watching Rare Exports to see more creepy Santa lore...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1401143/

Never before have old men been so terrifying to me.

EDIT: The trailer on IMDB makes it seem rather silly, but the movie is excellent.

[–]photoresistor 0 points1 point ago

Great movie.

[–]HidanSensei 0 points1 point ago

Krampus are also a really awesome folk metal band, check them out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI3H4Moh_jE

[–]Sarlo_Akrobata 0 points1 point ago

Not only in Croatia but the catholic population in the Ex -Yu countries in general. Also, Krampus is not Santa, it's somwthing like the boogieman.

[–]Green_Geno 0 points1 point ago

In America, we drink up Krampus, the tasty Helles lager that punishes bad livers. just as I was doing in this pic

[–]TheActualAWdeV 0 points1 point ago

That's an interesting tidbit on cultural differences. Is this about the image or about "look at those wacky foreigners?"

[–]mablake184 0 points1 point ago

This should have been my Halloween costume.

[–]bluepineapples 0 points1 point ago

Having an anti-santa-type character was actually at one point in time common in many countries. The french at one point in time had "father spanker" who beat the crap out of bad kids with a paddle in the middle of the night. Americans used to give bad kids coal. But no one does any of this now, because kids are too spoiled to be punished on a holiday.

[–]Treborius 1 point2 points ago

In the Netherlands this character (together with Knecht Ruprecht and other folklore) evolved into Zwarte Piet. Also WTF-worthy.

[–]murdocjenkins 0 points1 point ago

I actually have a krampus tattooed on my arm

[–]Mickeymousears 0 points1 point ago

We don't celebrate Xmas- but I'm thinking of picking up krampus--- he seems pretty awesome!!

[–]scroogish 0 points1 point ago

Looks like he's offering a nice tasty basket of fruit. Not too shabby.

[–]themidnightnarwhal2 0 points1 point ago

i didn't know that croatia has german customs. Krampus is scary as hell. if i saw that thing coming at my door id pull out the shotgun.

[–]avon22889 0 points1 point ago

I dress up like brock sampson and whip his ass.

[–]TotalRiot 0 points1 point ago

For the people who are inevitably thinking it, no, krampus does not punish bad children from behind

[–]destroyosaurusrex 0 points1 point ago

... By molesting them on a horse.

[–]iC3xM4n 0 points1 point ago

This "Krampus" is actually two old gods that look like a jolly old couple that love the holidays. They sneak into homes and pull people out of the chimney then lock them in their basement and eat them. They choose their victims using Meadowsweet and can only be killed by an evergreen stake through the heart. There's also some process to the eating that involves blood, fingernails, and teeth, but that's a little morbid for Christmas.

The more you know.

[–]Infiltr4tor 0 points1 point ago

"Gimmy them cookies ya little shit, now cry for me!"

[–]pisstones 0 points1 point ago

God I'm glad to be American.

[–]Gattatok -2 points-1 points ago

Anyone else think that the name "Croatia" means when you visit there you see dinosaurs and shit?

[–]Ouizardus -2 points-1 points ago

This is awesome and should be a part of standard popular culture. Maybe kids would be better behaved, rather than snotty spoilt brats.
