This gif is of refreshingly high definition

[–]cuddlyogre 38 points39 points ago

An not even 1MB in size. I am impressed.

[–]asshatnowhere 12 points13 points ago

might be because its short and only the head moves and nothing else. does that work for gifs? it works when compressing movies

[–]Hinook 10 points11 points ago

I'm confused. Is it naturally like that, or was this done in some program (I'm referring to the everything-but-the-head-moves thing)? Because even if it was shot with a tripod and stuff, there would be super slight fluctuations, because of the change of light amount, caused by the bird blocking it, in my opinion. Also, how does this matter when it comes to gif-size? Or better yet... how do gifs work exactly? I'm sorry, I expect to be downvoted now, but I'm just curious, is all.

[–]asshatnowhere 1 point2 points ago

well I can't say much as I don't know a lot about the subject but the way compression works is you get the basic film, as in all the frames, and then a computer determines what is moving and what is stationary. It keeps the stationary things almost as a single frame. so think about it this way. this is just a gif of a bird moving its head, the tree and backround are just a picture. also compression can be made differently to either have picture quality or more memory saved. better quality usually mean less image compression while the entire movie or gif takes up more memory and vise versa. I hope I explained that correctly. gifs are usually just actual movies at first and then you select the part you want or frames and just loop them over and over.

I'm pretty sure that gifs are simply a collection of complete images, while most videos you watch are encoded in a more efficient way. Most video codecs contain all the information for the first frame, and then information for how to change that frame to the next one. (Every once in a while an entire frame is loaded.)

As far as what makes gifs large or small, I think it depends on the format of the individual frames and the framerate. Basically if you have unoptimized images going at a high frame rate, it will take some time to load them all. Ideally you want to optimize the images and choose a conservative but acceptable framerate.

EDIT: Reading below, I realize I'm wrong about gifs, they do use a compression algorithm that prevents loading every single frame independently.

[–]jaken55 2 points3 points ago

Yes, gifs use the Lempel-Ziv-Welch lossless data compression algorithm, so they don't have to load the entire image each frame, just the parts of it that change. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lempel-Ziv-Welch

Very interesting stuff

[–]taco_tuesdays 0 points1 point ago

The only part that animates is within the frame of the knot hole

[–]cuddlyogre 0 points1 point ago

With gifs, (in gimp anyway) the first frame is a full detail frame, and everything after that that uses the same color is transparent. The principle sounds the same.

[–]zulu90 1 point2 points ago

I am Compressed.

[–]White_Luigi 0 points1 point ago

I read that like this

[–]inFeathers 1 point2 points ago

You sure? Looks like a juvenile Harris to me.

[–]verywittywilde 0 points1 point ago

I thought the same thing initially, because of behaviour. But the eyes are too big for a Harris.

[–]jessi_wee 0 points1 point ago

It's a Swainson's Hawk. I work with a couple of these guys. They migrate to Argentina each winter (the greatest migration distance of any North American Raptor) and live almost exclusively on crickets while down there.

[–]AsDevilsRun 0 points1 point ago

Tobias.

[–]Ketrel 0 points1 point ago

No, it's a Swainson's Hawk. So the wild hawk Tobias used to distract Visser Three while helping Ket Halpak escape with Jara Hamee.

[–]jessi_wee 0 points1 point ago

Swainson's Hawk

[–]OlSlendy 3 points4 points ago

Well this is, Hawkward...

[–]tigolbittiez 0 points1 point ago

Owls? Don't you mean waffles? HAHAHAHA

[–]ArgonWolf 0 points1 point ago

i hereby submit an official request to combine this and the "ring wraith looking for frodo" gif

[–]mattwilliamsmusicuk 0 points1 point ago

The fact that I was on the toilet while viewing this made it more awkward

[–]olivortex 1 point2 points ago

Like some sort of jurassic hawk peeking

[–]A_RedditUsername 0 points1 point ago

The real question is why were they taking a video of that hole to begin with

[–]freakinidiot 0 points1 point ago

[–]bettorworse 0 points1 point ago

The whole "planking" thing is over, seal.

[–]Pretentious_Douche 1 point2 points ago

I expected the Encino Man guys to pop out.

[–]kaijunexus 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only who imagined a human body underneath that head?

[–]bettorworse 1 point2 points ago

Yes, yes, you are.

[–]Doesnt_Get_Irony 0 points1 point ago

It would be a perfect .gif if it did a classic surprised eagle look with its mouth agape.

[–]ericplaysbass 0 points1 point ago

Why I actually expected Dyrus outside of the LoL subreddit I'm not sure...

[–]JimBroNeal 0 points1 point ago

Wow, this gif reminded me so much of the scene in The Dark Knight where, after Joker escapes from his cell and blows up the place, he walks slowly to Lau's cell, peering in and saying, "Hello there".

[–]apteryx_274 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of the time when I was a kid, I had climbed a tree to look at a birds nest. Little did I know, it was a Raptor nest of some kind, and when I got to the top, I saw blood, severed bird legs and a head from it's previous meal, I was lucky the Hawk or whatever had gone out hunting, or i would have gotten my eyes pecked out!

[–]cipion -1 points0 points ago

[–]CallDaAmberlamps 0 points1 point ago

It's eagle man!...."I'VE GOT SOMETHING FOR YOUUUUUU"....Wow! Look at those low rates!

[–]l_RAPE_GRAPES 0 points1 point ago

Anyone hear this bird saying "Hello there!" in Sean Connery's voice?

Just curious.

[–]Yorik__brown 0 points1 point ago

The tiny humans don't stand a chance.

[–]d310 1 point2 points ago

I just a need a minute of your time, to spread the word of the Lord.

[–]CircumcisedSpine 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Chris Hansen. I expect the hawk to tell a chicken hawk to have a perch over here.

[–]LongInternetPenis -2 points-1 points ago

This makes me think of those camera close-ups on gaping orifices in porn. It just seems so awkward.
